@char54: I would love a housekeeper! I promised myself I would hold out until I had two kids, but being pregnant and exhausted with a baby crawling all over the filthy floor is making me want to get one now! I just can't keep the house clean and poor LO tries to eat dust bunnies.

Ok have to give a little background to this comment. I work for a health system and see a Family Practice doctor of theirs but he doesn't deliver babies (super bummer). Since we'd had fertility issues, so far my doctor has been my RE but he said I needed to pick out my OB so that I can transition to him/her after our appointment on the 20th. Well the one OB I actually like that works for our health system was supposedly winding down his OB practice and going to focus primarily on GYN surgeries. I was super bummed again. So we looked at other hospitals and other doctors but they all had negatives (too far, too expensive, out of network, etc.). Well since I work with this OB on a committee of the hospital, I just decided to email him and he said he's accepting new patients and would be happy to have me as a patient. I am SO excited! This had been stressing me out for quite awhile.
How did all of you pick your OBs? Did you already have them or did some of you have to pick one once you found out you were pregnant? What factored into your decision?

@marionberry: yes it was amazing!
@char54: we have a housekeeper, I can't keep up with it working fulltime.
@marionberry: We moved last year and I started seeing my midwife for yearly appt, shes been through all the fertility struggles with us so I knew we'd keep her as my pregnancy doc. I love her and actually she came in the room cheering today because I was finally pregnant.

@jetsa: Congratulations on a great appointment!
@marionberry: My general practitioner referred me to my OBGYN when I had an abnormal pap (which ended up being nothing) so I just continued to see him for my future paps, and now he's going to be my OB, I've heard nothing but wonderful things about him though from hospital staff and friends who have had him as their Dr.

@jetsa: @mrsstormy: I'm glad you both found great providers who worked for you! I had tried out a different OB in the area while we were TTC and she was horrible. Totally devoid of emotion and never called us with results..we always had to call her. So glad to have gotten a good one!
@jetsa: Don't you just love when providers get excited with you?! That's the best kind.

@marionberry: I was seeing a GYN who was awesome and very proactive. I wish she was OB too. I took your advice and called the local hospital where I want to deliver. They set me up with a nurse practitioner for the first prenatal appointment. Not sure how the doctor selection will go down. I went on the hospital website and they had a doctor selector option and there were several OB's that matched my preferences (e.g. female, younger, etc). So as for me, it's still up in the air.

@MapleMoose: Some providers will do meet and greets with possible new patients (usually about 10 mins) for free if you want to see if that OB fits your personality. Also, I'd google that doctor and see if you find any local blogs or forums that mention them (either how great or bad they are). Do you have any friends or coworkers in the area that could recommend an OB from the list the website gave you?

@marionberry: Good ideas. I'll ask around and continue the google search. Thanks lady!

I hate my city's way of dealing with pregnancy - there is one "OBS" clinic at the hospital and every single pregnant lady goes there for appointments, etc. You never know which doctor is going to see you - you could have a different one every time - and who knows who will show up the day of delivery.
I think I will try and have my appointments scheduled with the same doctor so at least there's some consistency but it's highly unlikely she/he will actually deliver our baby.

@char54: I think this is pretty usual. I know I'll rotate toward the end of pregnancy. Also this fatigue is killing me I'm done at 6:30, like completely wiped out. I'm supposed to drive to my Grampas Friday night and thank goodness my sisters coming with me bc otherwise I have no idea how I'd do it.
Thanks everyone for the well wishes on the appt.

@char54: How many OBs are in the practice? Maybe it won't be so bad if there aren't too many of them. My OB's practice at Northwestern is somewhat similar. While I'll be seeing my OB pretty consistently throughout the pregnancy, they encourage patients to start seeing some of the other 7 OBs in the practice around weeks 20-36. This is because deliveries are done by whichever OB is on call that day/night and they want patients to know them on some level.

@marionberry: I just went with my gyn since she's an OB as well. She's smart, funny and doesn't sugar coat anything. The other OBs in the practice seem great too so I'm looking forward to meeting them. My primary wish was to deliver at Northwestern's Prentice Women's Hospital where all of the OBs in the practice are on faculty.

@jetsa: @NBLChicago: I'm not sure how many doctors are in the practice - maybe 10? I just hate how there's no consistency whatsoever - especially in the beginning when I have so many questions. It's very laissez-faire and I had to practically beg them for a 9 week appointment instead of the usual first one at 12 (okay, I told a little white lie that I was going out of town then lol).
When I called about the spotting it felt odd because I don't even know the doctors names so I felt like a faker. They told me to go to the ER... whereas if I knew the doctor, or could keep going to my family doctor, I could schedule an appointment to go in and at least talk about things first.
I also hate how there's no choice - if I wanted to go to a more personal experience, I couldn't - it's our one and only option. Oh well - the joys of living in a small town!
On another note, DH and I decided to accept the job offer to stay in our current town. HOORAY!! I am so relieved, happy, thrilled, etcetcetc. This decision has been looming over our heads for the past 2 years (we knew it was coming but didn't know when) so our lives have been on hold since then. I was floored when DH said this fall that he wanted to start a family since we have been so cautious with the potential move (I think it might have had something to do with me losing my maternity leave if the baby wasn't born before we moved!). Regardless it's true that everything always works out as it should.
Our families are thrilled that they are going to be close to the baby, I get to keep my job, and we can start looking to buy a bigger place to accommodate baby! It's like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
@runnerd - Thinking of you...keep us posted!

@NBLChicago: I'm wondering if we have the same OB practice. I'm also at Northwestern and all the OBs are on the faculty of the medical school there too.
coffee bean / 39 posts
@NBLChicago: ahhh, nope. Northwestern Faculty Foundation. I was at the Physicians Group (Dr. Auger) but switched over because I had seen a doctor at the Faculty Foundation before too and they got me in for an appt quicker. I'm fickle like that Excited to deliver at Prentice though. Are you going to take any of their classes beforehand? There are lots of options!
grape / 77 posts
@Bisou7585: Oh nice! My endocrinologist is at NMFF. I haven't even looked into the classes that Prentice offers. Which ones are you thinking of taking??
coffee bean / 39 posts
@NBLChicago: My doctor recommended a couple. I think we are definitely going to do the Great Expections one and maybe the breastfeeding one? I'd like to try them all but they are kinda pricey. We should probably do the one about baby and dog too since our dog is terrible. She mentioned they fill up fast so to start thinking about registering around 20 weeks.

@Bisou7585: Oh nice! Thanks so much for the heads up on these. All three of those sound really interesting. I'll see whether DH is interested in them. Unfortunately I'll probably need the Bowser & the Baby class too... Frenchies are so stubborn! Can't wait to see how he adjusts to having a baby around. Thanks again!

Okay ladies I had a bit of a scary night/morning, I woke up at like 2:30 this morning and had some really bad cramps, they felt like pretty bad period cramps, I'm not sure if they woke me up or if they came after I woke up but they lasted for like a half an hour. I didn't have any spotting or bleeding thought... I thought at first I would call the Dr. right away this morning but I'm feeling okay now (but my uterus feels maybe a little tight, or like clenched sort of like a fist or something). I also remembered that I had cramps sort of like this the night before my BFP. I'm thinking I might just let it be unless they come back and just bring them up at my appointment in a weekish. They weren't localized to one side or the other. What do you think?
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@MrsStormy: several ladies had very similar experience on here, so I think it is normal!
clementine / 818 posts
@runnerd: Yeah your right, I think its just scary since I'm almost 7 weeks and most people don't seem to have continued cramping at this point, but everyone is different, so I just have to remind myself of that. Good luck to you today at your appointment.

@littlegbee: I will try your rice cakes with peanut butter You can get Nut Thins pretty much anywhere; I like the plain ones as my taste buds are on full alert lately! Although, I'm finding it hard to choke anything down, even a little, because I'm literally feeling queasy all.day.long. Bleh. I had to travel for work yesterday and threw up at the airport
@marionberry: I have a friend who lives in my town, who has a young son and LOT of mommy friends, and asked her if there was a good OB in town and she said without a doubt there is one who is supposedly the best (even all the doctors and nurses who work in the hospital go to him when they're pregnant). I was really lucky to get my appointment with him, though I'll first be seen by a nurse practitioner.
@runnerd: thinking of you today! I'm sure all will be well

@mrsstormy: I will be 7 weeks tomorrow and recently had a bout of strong cramps, too. It gave me pause, but when I didn't experience any spotting, I stopped worrying about it. I think we are ok, but it I know it's kind of scary!

I started cramping yesterday morning at work (I work night shifts). I called my dr and went in for an US. They baby no longer had a heartbeat. I haven't started spotting or anything yet. I guess my body wants to hold onto this baby as long as possible, just like my heart does.
Good luck to you all in your pregnancies. Enjoy every minute of it. I'm sorry but its too hard to see this so I probably won't be checking back throughout the months.

@rosie girl: I am SO sorry! I completely understand why you wouldn't check back in. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
@mrsstormy: I'm one of those with the really intense cramps and baby is perfectly healthy. Mine are due to some cysts on my ovaries and my doctor said they're completely normal and will eventually go away. As long as there's no blood I wouldn't worry.

@MrsStormy: That's totally me - I had pretty severe cramps (last week? the week before? can't remember) that woke me up and lasted about 1/2 hour then disappeared completely. Since then I've had only mild cramps and no spotting so I'm thinking everything is okay!
@Rosie Girl: I am so so sorry - I can't imagine the sadness you must be feeling right now. I'll be thinking of you and your family.

@marionberry: just heard back a little bit ago. I posted separate thread about it last night, so in just copying what I put on it:
Thanks for the support! Got call from doctor - HCG went from 4000 to 7600. She said anything over 60% was good sign and that was 88%, and technically it was only 44 hours between. I feel much much better, but still the worries over the ultrasound. I am going back next week, for follow up ultrasound - she offered for my peace of mind more than anything. Of course she gave the disclaimers of still possible that miscarriage could occur, but I'm choosing to believe in the power of prayer and that it was still too early for accurate u/s reading.
