Spring 2013 Mamas & Toddlers

    pomelo / 5258 posts

Hello Ladies, I must have missed this thread before. Feb counts as Spring-ish, right?

    LO's name: Z
    Age: 13 months
    Weight: 22lbs?
Length:85% percentile, I forget. Bah - too lazy to look up records

Number of Teeth: four with two more on their way

    Clothing Size: 12-18 months

Cruising, Crawling, or Walking: She finally stood for the first time this weekend. She zooms around the house with her walker but no first steps yet.

How many ounces of formula/BM/milk per day: She nurses 2-3x per day. She started 2-3x 5oz bottles of cows milk a couple weeks ago when I stopped pumping. I'm trying to get LO to take sippy cups now. My plan to introduce cows milk in sippy cups failed completely. That was an awful week.

How many solid meals a day (and how much):3 meals and a snack. She's a good eater. We had trouble with some food reactions early on but things are looking up.

Any Words: Hi, Bye, Daddy, Dog, Woof, Cat, Up, Door, Light, Mama, day care lady's name, "that?" (for "what is that?"), "got it" (means "mine"), and of course her favorite - no.

Milestone you're most looking forward to: Walking. She's wants to explore EVERYTHING and be more independent. I look forward to walking so I can take her more places outside. Plus she's heavy.

How's sleep going: Good, she sleeps 7:45-5:30 in the crib. One or two naps in the crib per day. Sometimes as little as 30 minutes total but that's 30 more minutes of productive/relax time than I got for 12 months!

Any plans for TTC: I just had my IUD removed in preparation to start TTC. Shhh - I haven't told anyone IRL except DH (yes, my OB asked me if I told him).

@Corduroy: @cmomma17: Glad to see you ladies join us! Welcome!!!

@ALV91711: Yeah for easier drop offs! Sorry about the rough nights though! Hope Isaac soon gets the memo that night time sleep is just awesome!

@Adira: I guess the newborn period will not be quite as lonley, you'll have Xander to interact with! (And still get the newborn snuggles)

@Smurfette: Oh no, I really hope that daycare gets the noisy toddler problem solved. How did your talk with the teacher turn out? Poor R

We were at our 12m pedi visit today so I got new stats. B is still a really big boy:

    Age: 12 months
    Weight: 25.5 lbs (11,5kg)
    Length: 32 in (81cm)

Luckily for us the pedi is not concerned at all with B not crawling. He said the way he is moving and doing all the other things like pulling up, sitting and sitting in a knee stand he is likely one of the 15% of kids who will not crawl at all and move straight to walking.
On the flip side B had to have another blood draw to check for his liver markers again… Poor baby. They still have to draw the blood from his head because he’s just still to chunky for any veins to be visible elsewhere. So it was 3 adults pinning him down and it took 2 tries today to get the amount of blood they needed
Annnnddd we have to come next week for the vaccination because his current cold is in full bloom right now and the vaccination would've likely make him really sick

  3. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Pumuckl: I'm sorry about the blood draw- that sounds terrible hopefully the vaccines will be less eventful.

THanks for all the support yesterday guys! We survived. SHe only took an hour afternoon nap (a car honking + a poop woke her up) but I was able to sneak in about 40 minutes or so of sleep myself which helped make the afternoon far more tolerable. We did some unnecessary shopping at TJ Maxx, which helped too!

AND she slept really well last night. Woke up at 11, but I sent my husband in. She kept crying when he picked her up, so he just put her down and walked out. She was asleep within like 2 minutes (I literally got up to go pee before nursing, and she was out by the time I left the bathroom). Clearly we just need to give her a minute at night! She nursed once at around 4:30 and had a little trouble going back to sleep (wouldn't transfer), but I left her and she was out within a couple minutes again. And she slept until 6:40! I actually woke up out of a dead sleep at 6:30 afraid I'd missed her crying, so I even had 10 minutes to myself before she got up. Glorious.

ANyway, too long/ no one cares about my kids sleep- I really appreciate the support. It was really nice to be able to vent a little. Staying home all day on the rough days is so lonely and isolating!

@ALV91711: So glad that drop offs have gotten better!!
@Corduroy: Welcome!! Lots of words! I am getting my IUD removed in a couple weeks, not for TTC, but other reasons. Did you get your period right away?
@Pumuckl: Big boy!! Poor guy! That sounds awful getting that blood drawn.
@Silva: Glad that you got a nap in yesterday!! Even more that you got sleep last night!!!! You can vent here anytime!!! I get lonely with DH gone and I work. So I can only imagine how it is for you since you are at home all day and your DH works such long hours.

R's teacher told me this morning that when the two kids that don't want to nap, come in late, won't go down, or wake up super early, are going to go back in the infant room and see how that goes. She did say that Director said if putting them in the room makes the ratios (teacher:student) then they can't but most days it shouldn't be a problem since the infant room isn't full right now.

Hopefully that will help! I am going to give it a week or two and if it doesn't get better then I will call the Director. But I am glad that they see it as an issue.

@Smurfette: thank you I'm glad they are trying to solve the issue with those kids. Hope R gets some better sleep today!

Smurfette: I had a few days of spotting/light bleeding following removal but I don't think it was my period. My doctor told me to expect a pretty heavy period since it will be my first pp and first post IUD period. Removal was a piece of cake even though they had to search for the string (I had it re-trimmed too short apparently). I hope it goes smoothly for you!

  8. Pumuckl

    pomegranate / 3601 posts

@Silva: Thank you for the well wishes! So glad your day and especially your night went well!

@Smurfette: So glad that daycare sees the problem and is trying to find a solution. Fingers crossed that R has nice long nap at daycare today!

B was so worn out from the screaming fest at the pedi's today that he fell asleep on the way from the dr. office to daycare (it's a 15min drive) and stayed asleep when I got him out of his seat, while I took him to his class room and even when I took the hat of him he still continued sleeping even though I was talking to him. So we decided to put him in his bed and just let him sleep. I sure hope he napped around noon again for the poor teachers. Since their playrooms and the room they sleep in are completely separate he at least wouldn't have disturbed the other kids if he hadn't slept.

@ALV91711: Glad to hear that Isaac is getting used to daycare and liking it now!!! Yay!!!

@Corduroy: February totally counts - mine's a February baby too! Welcome!! Also - WTF with all the words??? Xander still only says "Mama," "Dada," and "uh-oh!!"

@Smurfette: What a great update!!!! Although those parents really just need to get those kids on a schedule - they can't stay in the infant room forever!

I'm wondering if Xander is moving to one nap. He's only taken one nap the last two days at daycare, though he still does a solid two on the weekends. I'm guessing there's so much going on at daycare, he just doesn't want to sleep?

  10. Smurfette

@Adira: R is still on two naps at home.

@Corduroy: Welcome! J is a february baby too! That's amazing that she talks so much already!

@Pumuckl: Aww poor baby. I hope everything checks out ok!

@Silva: Unnecessary shopping is always a good way to turn a day around! I'm glad she slept well last night, and that you got to catch up on sleep too!

@Smurfette: Glad to hear that they're at least doing something to remedy the situation, and trying to work with you on this. I hope it works out well, and R gets more restful naps at daycare soon. I also got my IUD removed - best decision ever because I hated it.

  13. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Yeah, they are just much more stimulated at day care so they can stay up longer. Last Sat she was up at 515 so her nap was at 830!

  14. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

So I FINALLY ordered a babygate for the bottom of our stairs. I actually already have one, but when we went to install it, we realized that with our banister, it won't open well. Bleh! Hopefully this new one will work better (though it's uglier....).

  15. ALV91711

    pomelo / 5621 posts

@Adira: We haven't put a gate at the bottom of the stairs yet. Once he starts really going at them then we'll do it.

@Corduroy: Glad your joining in. What a lot of words. We only have a couple over here.

@Pumuckl: What a big guy. That sucks about having to take blood.

@Silva: I'm glad you had a good night last night, I hope that it continues. Talk about sleep all you want, that is what we are here for.

@Smurfette: I hope that solution works and the babies get the naps they need. That is one thing I like about our daycare, all the rooms have nap time at the same time. If they need an earlier or later nap when they are younger they will put them down then too.

@Adira: We are on a week and a half now of just one nap. Even this last weekend he only took one each day. I hope that he keeps it up, it will make doing things on the weekend a lot easier.

  16. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@ALV91711: Yeah, we need that gate because Xander will go over to the stairs, look at us, we'll say "No Xander, no stairs without Mama or Dada" and then he'll laugh and start climbing!

So this Saturday, Hubs and I are going to PAX East (a gaming convention because we're big nerds) and my mom is coming over to babysit! It'll be the first time we've left Xander for this long and I won't need to pump!!! I'm excited! I'm a little nervous about how it will go. Mostly for my mom, haha. I think she might get overwhelmed (when Xander's being rambunctious) or bored (when he's napping) because she'll be at our house and alone (my dad works weekends). I hope it goes well!

  17. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Adira: Have fun! SO nice for you guys to get out and connect over something you loved pre-baby!
My parents are babysitting overnight in June, and we're going to stay out overnight- its jazz fest in our city, so we'll go to drinks, dinner, etc. and get to see live music all night. I'm excited and already super anxious about leaving her that long.
I think they do better when we're not around though Hopefully. I'm telling myself that anyway.

So Thea woke up once (at about 4:45) but slept from 7 to 7. She's been waking up by 6:30 at the latest (and usually wakes up a ton more than that, too). This was the first time since we stopped co-sleeping that she woke up without crying in the morning. I mean, she let me know she was up (and tossed her buddies Bussy and Hootie overboard), but she wasn't crying like she usually is. Sleep is good!

    Two questions re: milestones:
What counts as "first steps?" For a few days now, if I stand her up a couple feet away from me she will walk toward me. Its kind of stumbling, and she'd fall by the time she got to me but she's definitely intentionally taking steps. Yesterday at the library she took like 3 or 4, and everyone was super excited about it. Does that count? SHe's still working on her balance standing, so she can't step, stand, step.

And, when do you count words? She definitely says dada, dat? (for "what's that" and for "give me that", coupled with pointing), and noo noo (for nurse). She is also saying "nana" for banana (short vowel as opposed to the long vowel for nurse).
So do the later two count as words? I mean, I know what she's saying, she says it consistently, but nobody else would know what she was saying out of context.
Oh, and, she has definitely said "more" (sounds kind of like "moe") both when she wants more food and to get us to read a book again. But she doesn't say it all the time- she prefers to say "dat" over and over while pointing.

  18. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Silva: Don't worry!!! Your overnight in June will be soooooo much fun! We've left Xander a couple times overnight and he was totally FINE! It was just hard on me because I was still nursing so I had to pump, which sucked! And now I'm pregnant, so even though I'm not nursing, I still can't drink! WTF world.

That sleep is awesome!!! Yay!!! And hello - her name is Thea?? I LOVE that. Is it short for anything?

As far as milestones, I definitely think those 3-4 intentional steps count! And "dat" and "nana" are definitely words if she's using them in a consistent way that has meaning and it's not just babbling!!!

@Adira: Fun! It will be great. It will be great Grandma-Xander bonding time! Prep for when you have #2, someone is going to have to watch him while you are in the hospital. Enjoy some couple time!
@Silva: Awesome sleep!! I counted her first steps when she took a step or two by herself. So it sounds like to me that she did it! It took R another month till the steps were every day and like 10 in a row before she would fall. I think those counts as words too!!!
She is talking much better then R is, who apparently thinks she just needs to talk at day care. Stinker!

So R got a 2 hour nap yesterday!! One kid did wake up, but their was 2 teachers in there so she was able to keep him quiet and engaged so he didn't wake up anyone else. Her teacher said R started to wake up and did her normal gunting, so she ran over and patted her back and she went back to sleep. She went to bed at 645 and slept till 615!! Granted she woke up at midnight, and grunted for about 10-15 mins, but still that was the best night we have had in a while. She was in a great mood when I went to get her.
Seriously bottom molar let's get this over with already. It feels like it is through the gum but I can't see when looking in her mouth.

  22. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Good point! And hopefully it will be my mom who watches Xander when I'm in the hospital!

I'm jealous that R actually says stuff at daycare. Based on what you said, I was thinking that maybe Xander spoke more at daycare too, but I asked and NOPE! Still just "Dada" "Mama" and "uh-oh." I hope he says more stuff soon! I'm getting worried!

YAY 2 hour nap!!!! That's exactly what Xander did yesterday too! And that's awesome how well she slept last night too!!!! Good naps can make ALL the difference!!!! Hopefully it continues!!

@Adira: We already out up a gate on our stairs- lil B is obcessed with climbing them!
We haven't left B for an overnight yet (I know I know- I am so nervous) but we have a wedding to go to in July so I am thinking we should do a trial run before then!

@Silva: We haven't counted first steps yet- but Lil B will "walk" take 3-5 steps from me to DH. Maybe those are first steps!

@Smurfette: YAY! Sounds like that nap at daycare helps her sleep at night too! She was probably just so overtired- glad you all got some good rest! Hope daycare keeps it up!

Lil B's birthday party is this weekend! So excited- but at the same time... my lil baby is going to be 1!!!

  24. Pumuckl

@cheert16: We haven't left B overnight either. Is it weird that I'd miss him although he sleeps from 7-7 and I don't see him except when I peek in through the door before I go to bed?

@Adira: sounds like fun! You guys enjoy yourselves! And I can totally see B doing the stair thing too. Whenever we say no he just puts the wryest smile on looks at us and proceeds to do what he was doing. Luckily we don't have stairs though.

@Smurfette: wow, sounds like a great day! Now R repeat for mama! As a side note: I found the molars at the side of the gum first. How many have broken through now? B is working on his 3rd canine. I have no idea why he is in such a hurry with his teeth. But I guess it also means we'll be done with teething soon

@Silva: what a great night! And I second @Adira love the name! And those a words, you guys have your own secret language

  25. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@cheert16: A trial run would probably you relax and have fun at the wedding!
@Pumuckl: I miss R when she is sleeping and home with us!! Only one molar for sure now. The top ones are just really swollen so not sure when they are going to pop through. The left bottom should be out by this weekend.

  26. Pumuckl

@Smurfette: so glad I'm not the only one missing my baby while simultaneously being so happy he is sleeping!

@Adira: That will be so much fun to do something with your hubby. I'm sure X and your mom will have a great time.

@Silva: I hope she continues with the good sleep! I think I'd count those all as words.

@Smurfette: Good to hear that she had a 2 hour nap, I hope that this will be able to continue. What a good nights sleep too.

@Adira: Isaac only says mama, dada and mom. He babbles a lot, but no other words. Today on the way home in the car I was trying to get him to copy me but he wouldn't even try to say anything.

@cheert16: @Pumuckl: We haven't left Isaac overnight yet either. I'm not sure when we will be either as we don't have anyone close by that we trust to watch him overnight. And that is not us just being crazy first time parents. Plus he is a crappy sleeper and I don't think I'd want to put that on anyone else.

@cheert16: A trial run for a night away is a very good idea.

@Pumuckl: It is probably horrible getting all those teeth but it is nice that you are close to being done.

I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday. The last two mornings Isaac has woken up at 4:30 and not gone back to sleep. He nurses and then wants to get up. I'm hoping it is nice enough this weekend that we can take him to the park. He has never been and I really want to try the swings. They are calling for snow tomorrow though so I'm not getting my hopes up.

  28. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@ALV91711: Thanks for letting me know about Isaac and words!!! I was starting to get worried, but Xander and Isaac sound exactly the same! We try to get Xander to copy us and he just ignores us! Maybe they're just stubborn?

You're supposed to get snow???? What!!! It's supposed to be in the 60s here (New England) and I'm sooooo thankful for the warm weather!!

So tonight was our first good morning in a LONG time I feel like! Xander woke up early AGAIN, but after I nursed him, he actually fell back asleep! And he didn't fuss at the boobs as much as he has been, so either he's getting used to the smaller amount or maybe my supply is finally adjusting to this once a day session. Either way, I'm thankful!

@ALV91711: Winter needs to stop now!! It is going to be high 70s here so we are taking R to the park this weekend. Only for a little bit cause the pollen is so bad. But I can't wait to put some shorts on her!
@Adira: Yay! How long are you going to nurse in the am for?

The last couple nights, R new thing is to pick up acorns outside and put them in her mouth. Gross!

I am so behind on this thread but DH has been home and my computer time has been limited. We have been having some great family time though

@Smurfette: You are excited to put R in shorts and I am waiting impatiently to get out all of H's beautiful winter clothes. For a warm climate I sure went a little crazy buying coats

@Adira: 18 months was my maximum but luckily I didn't have to worry about that.

@cheert16: Hope B enjoys his party! We haven't left H overnight yet and I can't see us doing it for a while.

H walked today!!!!! Sooooo exciting!!! Both Dh and I were there to see it which made me even happier. She's been toddling around a few steps at a time all afternoon.

And what is with the poop since she turned one? Seriously 3/4 times a day.

    @AprilFool: wow steps! So exciting!

@AprilFool: @Smurfette: awww teething, we're still missing one canine here and then we're done until the 2yr. molars! so NOT gonna miss teething pain cries!

@Adira: yeah for Xander being less fussy at the boob. Maybe the taste of the milk was/is also different in the pregnancy and took some time getting used too.

We've had some wonderful spring weather here and went for a long walk today with B in the backcarrier. In the afternoon B WOULD NOT nap. So DH went for another 2h walk with him in the stroller. I got to nap

As a side note concerning eating: we've started B on a strict family dinner and its working beautifully. It was some complaining/wailing for the first 2-3 days while prepping the food but since then he quietly plays or watches until dinner is ready and we then enjoy it together.

We JUST left E for a sleepover at MIL's last night and it was freakish fantastic. Felt like a damned vacation! I highly recommend it

@aprilfool, our daycare lady said that lots of poop every day is super common when babies hit 1 and lasts about 6 months. Says it's their GI system regulating. E's also going A LOT. 4 times today and it's only 330pm lol

@blackbird: 6 months?? I am not sure I or her little bum can take that! It was sooo red tonight. But at least there is a reason, I did think it may be adjusting to no breast milk but that makes sense.

@Smurfette: Is R getting her top or bottom molars? H is getting a new tooth but it appears to be a bottom molar or canine but seems too far back for a canine. But she only has the middle 2 on the bottom so it's a bit weird.

@Pumuckl: I love family dinner and we try to do it together every night. Luckily DH's early home time means we can do it on her timetable. I like eating early but DH not so much

@AprilFool: Yay for steps!! so exciting!!!
J has been all over the place with poop as well and literally so last night haha!! He goes 3 times a day and then other days its once a day and some constipation. He is now fully transitioned to cow's milk and I think his system is adjusting. I still have some frozen BM but its from May last year. I feel so bad wasting it and going to ask DH to throw it away. Can't bring myself to do it
@Pumuckl: Thatz really nice you have your LO eating family dinner. I keep trying that with J every night but he just wants milk!!
Talking about feeding, we fed J some peanut butter sandwich the last week and he seems ok with it. The first time I was a bit nervous watching for any reactions but he did fine. He just needs to eat the food now and not play with it!!
@blackbird: Oh ya sleepover sounds amazing!! I think I might be able to do overnight in May and can't wait!!
@Smurfette: Thatz rough on R hope the molars come in soon and you are all set until 2!!
