@Silva: I send Lil B with a lunch everyday to daycare (he is at a home place too) he has his lunchbag- and there are basic stuff that I make sure is it in everyday (like goldfish, applesauce pouch, teddy grahams, mandarin oranges- I just leave them in there and if she uses them I replace them) Then I add daily stuff- string cheese, yogurt, a fresh fruit (some days), veggies (somedays), and his lunch item (today it was a peanut butter sandwich on wheat bread) some days it leftovers, some days I make something for him in the morning, or sometimes I send a annies easy mac. Depends on the day and what my AM looks like before its time to leave. I also send whole milk- but she tells me not too and she can just give him the milk she has at her house. He nevers eats everything I pack- I just want to make sure there is variety and enough. He goes from 10 am- 6pm. He eats dinner at home with DH (I work nights)

@Mrs. Blue: thank you! it was a big surprise!! I tend to worry about Lil B's speech as well- he has said mama, dada, yiayia, up- but he gets stuck on a word and its like he forgets the rest. Right now he is in a mama stage- but for like 3 weeks all he said was up. I am going to bring it up at his 14 months appt- which is in a month, so maybe the pedi can give me some insight.

@Smurfette: Lil B was trying to climb in the tub last night! Thanks goodness he cant yet- although he did climb a whole flight of stairs yesterday- scary!! Lucky I was right behind him- now that I know he can go up- I need to make sure our bottom of the stairs gate is always closed!

@Mrs. Blue: @keepcalmcarrie: Xander's very similar in the language department. He babbles a TON and I'm pretty sure he knows Mama and Dada, but sometimes he says Nana instead, and I'm not sure if he's referring to me or something else. And otherwise, it's just a whole bunch of dadadada and uh!. Mama, Dada, and Uh-oh are definitely his only concrete words.

@Mrs. Blue: Oh no, you guys have a lot on your plates right now! I know you and Mr. Blue are very pragmatic and I'm confident you'll find a way to work it all out, but I'm sorry you have to deal with it everything at once. I hope you are able to catch a break from your landlord! So stressful!

@smurfette: No crib climbing here yet but I think that's because Pete is a shorty and he knows that his little legs don't stand a chance climbing over the rail. Plus, he is usually in a sleep sack so his mobility is limited.

On the topic of toddler beds, however, I have been thinking about future LO #2 and whether or not we would need a second crib. I know it depends on when this nonexistent baby is born but if it's around Pete's 2nd birthday, would I move him into toddler bed to use crib? I can't imagine my little man in a bed yet!

@Mrs. Blue: @keepcalmcarrie: @CHEERT16: Definitely add me to the list of moms concerned about language development. Pete is extremely social, interactive, and communicative but still says zero words and doesn't seem all that interested in trying. He babbles a lot now (finally!) but he never mimics us. I'm not sure how great his receptive language is either. For example, I can say to him, "Pete, give mama the ball" and maybe 1/10 times he will actually do it. No idea if he's ignoring me or doesn't understand the request. The only word I'm 100% sure he knows is "head." If I say, "head!" he will immediately touch his head.

My daycare teacher says he seems normal for his age and my mom thinks I'm crazy for being concerned. I'm going to ask ped about an eval at the 15 month appointment if he still hasn't said one word, and I'm eagerly awaiting Mrs. Deer's next post about speech development on the blog!

@QueensBee: DH and I said that since they will be minimum 2 years apart, we will move R into a bed at that point. And a full, we aren't buying a twin. We don't want to buy another crib for less then a year. Then #2, will use it as a toddler bed.

    blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts

@QueensBee: yes! They don't milo mic either and I'm not sure if the few times they've said a "word" they actually were saying it with meaning or that's just how the babble came out this time! Same thing on the receptive language: every now and then they'll pick up the right thing, go to the door, etc., but it's so rare I don't know if they actually know or are just lucky that time. I guess if so may of us are in the same boat, it must be pretty normal.

@Mrs. Blue: wow that's a ton of stuff you have going on there. Hope it all works out! Sorry about the biting. B does bite me in my shoulder occasionally - ouch. I just tell him to stop and say it hurts. Hope they stop that soon.

@Smurfette: B has tried climbing in the big tub. And he has made mad dashes for his filling up baby tub. Luckily so far we've always caught him before he got there.

@QueensBee: glad to hear about the sleep! We're just having those thoughts now about the crib. We have a hand-me-down crib from my parents (so basically my crib). There are two because my sis and I are only 25m apart too. But one of the cribs doesn't have the screws anymore so we'd have to see whether we'll be able to find replacements.

I try not to worry too much about language development. He mimics us a lot and has impressive receptive language skills so I guess he'll start talking sooner rather than later. Also I read and sometimes talk to him in English so he's hearing two language which can slow down language development.

@Mrs. Blue: @keepcalmcarrie: @CHEERT16: @QueensBee: @Adira: We are in the same boat for words. He babbles and screeches a lot. Says mama, dada and nana for banana but no other words. I try to get him to mimic anything with no luck. He is pretty good at following instructions like go get the ball. I'm hoping soon he'll pick up some more words.

@Mrs. Blue: That is so much going on all at once. I hope that everything will fall into place and go smoothly.

@Smurfette: I hope that she doesn't start climbing out of the crib. She seems too young for that.

@Silva: I pack lunches and they are pretty boring. I always send a pouch, yogurt, cheerios/puffs. I send a meat and veggies most of the time for lunch and usually three types of fruit for snacks. Hard boiled egg, french toast (this freezes well to make ahead), chicken nuggets are all things I find easy to have and send. If we have leftovers I will send that. He doesn't usually eat everything, but I like to send a variety.

@Adira: I hope you enjoy your break from nursing. It is nice that it ended so nicely and congrats on making it so long!

@Pumuckl: I hope that the markers go down at the next blood draw. I'm glad that they are going to wait and do more blood tests and go from there.

@QueensBee: What a great sleep. Lets cross our fingers he does it again. Hopefully he is feeling better tomorrow.

@blackbird: I think a floor bed sounds like a good idea, least dangerous anyways. I hope ditching the crib is a long ways away.

And now I'm sick again. I've had a sore throat on and off for almost a week and yesterday it started to get way worse. So tonight I got Isaac into bed and went to the walk in clinic. It is definitely infected and I have to take amoxy. But I'd rather it be me than Isaac, it is so nice for him to not be sick or teething for a change.

@ALV91711: Oh no, get well soon! Hope the antibiotics help get you better soon.

Are there actually other non-walkers here or are all kids walking by now except mine?

Oh and I'm calling it but B is starting to say "yes" (well the German "ja"). I keep asking him whether he wants more milk and he says "yes" and reaches for his sippy. So cool!

@Pumuckl: Isaac isn't walkig either. That is so awesome that he has a new word and can use it properly.

Today is going to suck. Isaac woke up at 3:30 and took overan hour to get back to sleep. My alarm going off at 5:15 was not pleasant.

@ALV91711: Hope you feel better soon!

I can't believe toddler beds are already a discussion! Yikes!
We will just put her in a twin bed at some point. I'd go straight to a full, but her bedroom is way too tiny for that. I have started working on a quilt for her twin bed!

T totally learns a new word and says it all the time. I'm kind of assuming its normal. Especially if it gets her what she wants! She has a few words, but for awhile she would only say "dat!" (that- either to ask what something is, or because she wants it). She still doesn't say mama- but we've been working really hard to teach it to her this week!
She says dog, dada, nana (banana), and nunu (nurse). She has said more (sounds like "muh") with consistency, but stopped doing that once she learned "dat!" which I think is easier for her to say?
Just in the past few days she has started babbling with way more intonation and new sounds- it sounds like this little alien language. I think those jumps can happen suddenly. Our doc was a little concerned that she doesn't say "mama" yet- that sound seems to be harder for her than "d" or "n" but I'm not worried given that she has other words and quite frankly, what does she need to say mama for, anyway? I'm ALWAYS HERE.

I think there is a huge spectrum to "normal" language development, but its always a good idea to ask if you are concerned. T was a late babbler- she didn't start stringing consonants together until a little after 8 months (or was it 10? whatever the end of the normal range is, she was a week after that!). We talked to our Ped. because we were concerned and he gave us some great tips. Probably the best one was to read her the same book every day. So we started reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear every night before bed and before every nap. I'm so sick of that book. But she pretty quickly started to recognize the words, and then was able to do some generalizing- for example, she totally gets what a "bird" is, and can identify birds in other contexts. I think that in some ways limiting the language she was being inundated with helped her. She might have been a little overwhelmed.

That was long winded. Sorry. I think we always worry about something! T is walking all over the place. I can't believe its only been 2 1/2 weeks since her first intentional, real steps. Its her preferred method of travel now! Crazy.

  11. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Pumuckl: I would love for T to learn "yes" (and even "no" but I'll probably regret that one). She doesn't shake her head yes/no either, but we've never really taught her that. I should probably try, it would make communication a lot easier!

@Pumuckl: Z took a few steps on Sunday but nothing since. She's 14.5 months. I thought she was going to take off running when she finally took steps (like my nephew at 16 mo) but it doesn't look like that will be the case.

This thread moves so fast. I am so behind. LO made her final (for the foreseeable future) daycare transition yesterday. She's been to three now and we just put her back in the second one. I'm so happy the transition seems to be going well. I had no idea moving would cause 7 months of daycare transitions and stress.

@Pumuckl: Lil B walks- but is so cautious about it- he sits down before he gets somewhere. Its like he gets scared 1/2 way through and will sit a crawl or deviate from his original course to find something to hold onto. He walks fine though holding 1 of my fingers. I think he is just nervous.

@cheert16: sounds like B'll be a pro once he decides to let go. You'll be chasing him all over in no time

@Mrs. Blue: I don't have a biter but I do have a pincher! She gets me all the time and it really hurts. I just say ouch loudly and look stern. Sometimes she doesn't care and sometimes she laughs but I am not sure what else to do.

@Pumuckl: Fingers crossed those markers keep going down.

@QueensBee: Our plan for #2 is the crib and a bed for H. H will be at least 2.5 by then so not much point getting a second crib. I already have her bed girl bed picked out.

@Silva: H shakes her head no for everything. You ask her if she wants something, she shakes her head so I put it away and cue meltdown. I can't wait for yes! Haha

Add me to the list of mums who worry about their baby talking. H is just starting to get a few words but I worry more about her receptive language. She's not very good at following instructions and doesn't point or anything. She has, however, discovered how to yell. Luckily it is usually Dada she is yelling for in the morning

H has also figured out how to open the ensuite door (it slides) and I am constantly having to shoo her away from the toilet. I was too late yesterday and her bath washer went for a dunk and today I found a dummy in there. Whhhhy do they like the toilet so much??

@QueensBee: We'll probably buy another crib because I want to keep Xander contained for as long as possible, haha. Plus his crib converts to a toddler bed, so we'll just get another one that's the same so both kids can grow with them as they get older.

R got bit yesterday at day care. I didn't see it till I got home, and I called up there. The teachers didn't know anything about it, but talking to the teacher this morning, she changed R's diaper and outfit due to leak, and put sunscreen on her before she left for the day. So the afternoon teachers somehow missed her crying and/or didn't investigate it. I knew it was going to happen, so I am not pissed about that. I am pissed cause how did two teachers miss it?

I got a sweet note from one of R's friend's Mom. I have never met her but she went on to say how much she has enjoyed seeing R grow up, how she is the little "walmart" greeter when she drops of her son, she is going to miss seeing R grow, and she knows that she is going to rule the world one day. I thought it was really nice. Little does she know, her son not napping is part of the reason we are moving her! Getting sad about moving her.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Yikes! Where was the bite?? Do you think maybe it just took a while to show up and that's why they didn't see it?? That seems kind of strange that they wouldn't catch something like that!

And that's so sweet about the note! But funny that it's one of the moms who's kids are messing up R's napping! I really hope R is able to nap better at the new daycare. When do you switch? June, right?

  19. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: It was right on her knee. So some one bit her cause she couldn't bend there. I tried it last night. Even the teacher said no, someone bit her, she didn't do that to herself. I would think it would show up right away. It was still there at 630 after her bath, but was gone this morning. Her teacher just called and said that another teacher (not the ones in her room) did see R crying. Maybe it was on the playground or they were walking by? I don't know.
She starts the new center June 2nd. I am going to take her next Friday, since her current has a teacher work day, and let her play for a couple hours with me there so she sees the teacher and classroom. I really am hoping her teacher will be there are 715 when I drop her off, so I don't have to worry about her transferring.

I went out with a friend last night, so T didn't nurse before bed. My husband gave her a little warmed up cow's milk. She slept from 7:00-6:00. 11 hours!
And was thrilled to see me when she woke up. Her whole body gets into it now- she hops and squeals- it kills me.

We're going to try to go out for dinner on Saturday (I say try because its college grad. weekend, so we can't get a reservation anywhere and are going to try our luck walking in), and my parents are coming to babysit. We haven't had anyone else put her to sleep yet, so....we'll see how it goes. Hopefully alright, because they are coming again for our overnight in a few weeks.

@Smurfette: Yikes! Thankfully, Elliot hasn't bitten anyone at daycare, and the one time Finn bit someone at daycare it was Elliot! I would feel sooooo bad if they bit someone else. Hope the mystery biter ceases and desists!

  24. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: I wouldn't think that R (or any kid) would bite themselves enough to leave a mark anyway! I was just asking where it was to see if MAYBE there was a good reason no one saw it! But anywhere on the legs, and you'd think they'd see it during a diaper change! Ugh, so frustrating! Poor R!!!

Hopefully the transition to the new daycare goes okay! I'm sure there will be an adjustment period while R gets used to it, but in the long run, I think it will be better for her!

@Silva: Yay for good sleep! And have fun on Saturday!!! Hopefully you'll be able to get in somewhere!

  25. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: She did get changed into some capri pants, so when she was sitting they could have ridden up and bare skin was exposed. Then when she was standing they would have covered the knee. But she had a diaper change at 430, so maybe they just pulled the pants down and didn't see it. I don't know.
@Mrs. Blue: I hope your boys stop their biting. So hard cause at this age they can't talk to get out their frustration. Hopefully R and no one else gets bit!

  26. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Still, I'm just surprised they didn't see it! But I'm not experienced enough to change a diaper without taking the pants all the way off, so what do I know? I would've thought they'd have to lower them over her knees though to get to the diaper... ugh.

@Mrs. Blue: Bummer to hear about your boys biting! As far as I know, Xander doesn't bite... I hope he doesn't pick it up!

@Smurfette: @Adira: I think it might have to do with teething right now, because they never bite when they're mad. They're always happy and just trying to "chew" on my hand, except it's a bite now that they have teeth.

First steps tonight!! It was amazing. He did it when I was getting him at daycare. He was standing while I put his coat on and then I just let go of him and he took a couple steps, held on and then did it again.

@Smurfette: Poor girl getting bit at daycare, I can't believe they didn't notice it. Such a sweat not from the other mom. I really hope the transition of daycare goes smoothly.

@Silva: 11 hours of sleep is awesome!! I hope you have a great date night.

@Adira: Poor X, hopefully he is feeling better soon. What a cute little baby. You must feel better getting to see the baby.

In crappy news myself and Isaac were exposed to the measles the night I took him to the ER. There is an outbreak where we live and on the news last night the latest confirmed case was in the same ER as us on the same night for a majority of the same time. Hopefully we'll be ok being immunized but it still worries me. It can take 21 days for it to appear, so that means we have 11 more days until we are in the clear for sure.

@Adira: yay! I still remember my first ultrasound so clearly! I'm sorry your poor boy has another ear infection. You guys can't catch a break with his health lately!

I got what I deserved for bragging about sleep. We had our first very warm, humid night last night and T slept horribly. Her room finally cooled down by about 11, with the two windows open and the fan going, and then I got her to sleep by turning on the lights and doing the whole bedtime routine again, book to finish! But she was very restless, and up every 20-40 minutes before that. And then. She got up at 5:40! She is so tired (and so am I!)
Fortunately my husband is here today, so I can take some naps.

We've decided to get a baby video monitor, because once we put in the AC units we won't be able to hear her (and during one of huge wake ups last night her leg was between two bars in her crib). I don't want to spend a ton, and was looking at doing a fosccam camera but it seems complicated. The 2 one amazon in my price range then are the foscam baby monitor (120) and the baby optics (ETa: this one is on no better deal for 56.00 so unless someone talks me out of it I'm just going to get it) . Does anyone have either of these?
I remember being so excited about doing gear research while I was pregnant. Now I have to buy this and summer shoes and cotton sleep sacks and more summer pjs and I just want to cry....

@Silva: Yikes - humid nights are so rough! I remember last summer, Xander's room would get up to 80+ some nights and I was freaking out that he'd overheat and die!! I'm so paranoid. Thankfully we have A/C and a fan in the room, so we were able to keep him cool. Hopefully you guys don't have too many more nights like that!

@Adira: yay!! Was the heartbeat lower or higher then Xander's? Hope he feels better soon!
@ALV91711: YAY!!!!! So exciting. I think it is much easier with them walking.
Oh no about the measles! Fingers crossed.
@Silva: Sorry for the rough night. We have a Summer Infant monitor, sorry! But I hear ya it seems like we always have to get something else for R. Now some 12 month clothes aren't fitting her, so I have to buy more. And she really needs some toys. Seems bored at home.

well R's teacher said they figured out the biter. He tried to bite one of the teachers after I called in that night. She can't tell me who, just that he is a lot bigger and was acting out of aggression. So that makes me think it one of the two boys that always wakes up R from a nap. Although this week, she is waking her self up, stinker!
