Ladies, I just want to put out there that one of our fellow April mamas, babybeemcd, is pregnant with a little girl that will not make it. Baby girl has a severe spinal defect among other issues. We have been emotionally supporting her over at the Wedding Bee boards (hence why she hasn't been here). She had come to us asking for frequent flyer miles and hotel points, but many of us couldn't donate to her that way so we asked she set up a fund. If you are interested in helping her out by donating so she can help cover medical expenses and travel costs to get her parents to be with her and her husband for support, please seek me out on the Wedding Bee, and I can provide you with the link.

@megz06: oh my goodness, that is so sad. I'm so sorry for her. I don't know if I will be able to help, but I can talk to DH. Poor babybee Send her our love!

Sorry I've been so behind on this thread-I feel like I finally have my energy back, but there's just so, so much to do! The end of the semester is kicking my butt-I am so glad that classes are over this week. I've been pulling 10+ hour days away from home every day, and it's catching up with me. Need to try to take it easy the rest of this week!
I'm so jealous of everyone who has already gotten strollers and gear! We've looked, but we didn't buy anything yet. The Black Friday deals were tempting, though! We were gifted a dresser from my aunt over the weekend, though. It used to be in her nursery, and we are going to refinish it for little one. I'm very excited about it!

I'm finally done with the semester! I can know start thinking about other things, lol.
I already have the big gear I need, minus a car seat, since I bought all the big stuff for S in gender neutral themes. So, next week I'm going to be really shopping for clothing for LO.

@Dandelion: YAY, congrats! I have one more day of classes, then a paper to go. I cannot wait-there is so much to do! I don't have much done for Christmas, I have NOTHING done for baby, and my house is a mess. It's going to be a busy December!

@megz06: Terrible news... I'm not on WeddingBee either, but please let her know my thoughts and prayers are with her. That is heartbreaking...

@LovelyPlum: We have four outfits (only one newborn, others 6-9 months) and four board books...so you are not alone Haven't cleared out the guest room, figured out furniture, or anything.

So I started our registry last night It was a little stressful, but also lots of fun. The one conclusion that I came to is that I seriously cannot stand infant seats. We tried a few out in our car, and they all just seem so big and bulky and HEAVY, even the Maxi Cosi. I just cannot foresee myself using them on a regular basis. So, I think we are going convertible from birth. I realize it's against the norm, but honestly, I think it will be better for us.
What are you ladies using?
apricot / 344 posts
@LovelyPlum: We plan on doing the convertible from birth too! I'm too short and clumsy to worry about getting the whole seat in and out! But when we bought the stroller it came with a free Britax B Safe infant seat... so we MIGHT try it. I have a feeling I'm right and will think it's annoying. But we have it just in case it's even more annoying to carry the baby on our bodies everywhere and transfer him in an out of the seat when we go places. Some babies just don't like it... and what if we don't want to wake him up?! So I dunno!
coconut / 8079 posts
@LovelyPlum: @PEAPIE: we are thinking about a convertible from the start also. DH likes the idea of 1 seat that could last a long time
persimmon / 1273 posts
I think we're leaning toward an infant seat because we'll be splitting pick up/drop off daily, and would like to use one bucket and two bases to do so. I don't really see myself carrying the bucket around much though. I'm hoping to either snap it right into the stroller or baby wear if that's not possible.

Oh my gosh, I'm so frustrated! So baby boy has started giving some pretty good kicks. I've been able to feel them from the outside and started seeing them from the outside too! Hubs was out of town all week on business so he's missed this new development. But we layed in bed forever this morning waiting for the little booger to wake up with no luck. Just now, hubs left to get a haircut, and this kid is kicking through my yoga pants! What the heck!? Haha! Stubborn little thing!
Have a good weekend ladies!

@LovelyPlum: Starting a registry is so fun! I liked having a travel system for about 4 months but after that DD was too heavy to carry back and forth so I think a convertible could work, especially if you get a bassinet for stroller or plan to baby wear a lot.
@Dandelion: Hooray for last day of classes! Now you can enjoy winter break
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@LovelyPlum: eeek so exciting to start the registry!! we haven't yet but soon I think!
I'd love to just get a convertible since we don't even have a car--I hate having to buy 2 seats we'll barely use--but I think the convertible will be such a pain to install quickly in a taxi during those times that we do need it, like early pediatrician visits. When baby is older we'll probably rely more on public transportation, so maybe we can put off the convertible seat...I'm totally flustered by car seat research though, I might give up soon/delegate making a decision about it to dh, haha
@PEAPIE: that is SO fun that baby is kicking up such a storm! I'm sure you're dh will see/feel it soon this little lady still has been pretty subtle in her kicks, I feel little flutters every once in awhile but nothing too big yet
apricot / 344 posts
@nana87: I think Grizz shared this on another thread the other day and I thought it was helpful for narrowing the decisions down a little bit/weighing options... http://www.babble.com/baby/babble-blogger-favorites-the-best-car-seats-of-2013/
eggplant / 11408 posts
@gilmoregirl: that's fair. We only have one car, so it's a moot point for us. But if we would be splitting drop offs/pick ups, I think an infant seat makes the most sense!
@PEAPIE: @jhd: I'm glad to see that I'm not the only weirdo who is thinking about this. Honestly, I just couldn't deal with the infant seats. I kept hitting it on the top of the car door when we tried it out in the car. If not waking the sleeping baby is the point of the infant seat, I think smacking the handle on the door every time probably defeats the purpose
Because I'm a worrywart, though, now I'm conflicted. I REALLY liked the Peg Perego Convertible, but I've read reviews that for tall little ones, the rear-facing doesn't last as long (around 15-16 months) because you can't use all of the harness slots when it's rear-facing. At all of my ultrasounds, the docs have said baby has long legs, so it makes me wonder if I'll have this issue. On the other hand, how can I possibly know this far in advance if we *might* have a tall baby who *might* not fit rear-facing until they're two in this seat? Also, while I'm going to aim to R/F until 2, I'm not completely wedded to the idea of absolutely doing it no matter what until 24 months. DH actually didn't know this was the recommendation now, so he thinks this worry is me just trying to find something to worry about. He's probably right
@PEAPIE: silly babies I'm only now just feeling baby consistently, and DH hasn't been able to feel yet. Soon, I hope!
@luckypenny: I think we're going to try to baby wear, but I am also getting the infant insert for the Cruz, so we can use that when we're out. I admit that there are situations where it might be more convenient to have the infant seat. I thought I read, though, that you're really not supposed to leave them in the seat for long periods of time anyways, so maybe I'm not missing out on that much? I hope!
@nana87: I started because I was starting to panic that I'm 22 weeks and have done exactly nothing. And because I needed a break from finals stress It was a really good experience, though! I'm feeling a lot better about having my thoughts about what we need all in one place.
Also, if I were in your situation, I don't know what I'd do. Have you looked into the Combi Coccoro? That's a small convertible that might not be so bad to lug around. I just can't imagine having to lug a convertible in taxis on a regular basis. Yuck. And as you can see from my earlier rant, carseat research stresses me out, too. And there's no delegating here-DH does not have a preference. I think I have to just make a decision and go with it!
@luckypenny: beyond2 posted on the boards a few days ago, but I haven't heard from her lately, and I haven't heard from the other ladies, either. Thanks for keeping up with the list!
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@LovelyPlum: I have thought about the Combi Coccoro, but ugh I just don't know, I need to figure out how these things actually buckle into the seat in a taxi! I do really like the idea of being about to hook one onto the Cruz frame, and once baby is older I'll be more comfortable relying primarily on public transit so maybe we really will be able to put off a convertible option until we move out of the city and get our own car... For infant seat options, I've read good things on here and elsewhere online about the Cybex Aton--it's supposedly really light plus easy to install in cabs, but it hasn't been sold in store in 3 different stores I've gone to look in, so I feel like that's a bad sign. I don't want to decide until I give up on seeing it in person! I'm really torn on other options--the Maxi Cosi is sooo light, but the Chicco Keyfit also has really great reviews and we'd be able to use it longer since the Maxi Cosi has a lighter weight limit...And then there's the Mesa...so many options!
@PEAPIE: I did see that! It is helpful, but I think I really need to talk to someone knowledgeable at a store specifically about which options are best to use in taxis

@LovelyPlum: Yay for registering. I'm trying to put it off until after the first of the year, but people keep asking us where we're registered.
I was really overwhelmed by car seat options so I delegated. He was more than willing to research. We are going to do infant and convertible. We bought the Britax Advocate when Amazon had lightening deal.
I have cabin fever from being iced in since Friday. It's not looking good for work tomorrow either. The bad part us my office doesn't close and I have to my limited vacay days to be off. TX weather is so unpredictable it was 75 degrees last Wednesday.
watermelon / 14206 posts
As far as registering, I'm not doing anything public, but since we need a carseat, I'm gonna throw one on an Amazon registry and wait for the 20% completion coupon.

we got a registry started yesterday. i needed to do something baby related after a long & hectic week at work!
how was everyone's weekend?
eggplant / 11408 posts
@nana87: seriously! So, so many options. I think in your position, I might lean towards the infant seat, but I understand your reservations about ordering the Aton without seeing it. Amazon has a good return policy, though-have you considered getting then returning it?
@tbuzz: oh my gosh, that's a lot of ice! We're supposed to get some ice, but not that much. I wasn't going to do many baby things before the holidays, but I was starting to get antsy. I decided I'd rather have a list of things I need, then I can work on actually getting them in January. Glad you got your carseat!
@Dandelion: good plan.
@jhd: exciting! My weekend was good! We got our tree yesterday, and we decorated it today. I haven't felt great this weekend, but I'm trying to take it easy. It's hard not to be able to go full speed, though!

@LovelyPlum: I understand! I have been fighting a cold + the nausea is back in the evenings. It is hard not to be able to do things, or not be able to do them at the pace I used to before. Oh well! Try to rest & take it easy when you can. I will try to take my own advice! That's fun you got your tree up & decorated!

I haven't been active on this thread, but I realized that since I'm due on March 30th, there's a really good chance I could end up w/ an April baby. I figured I might as well say hi and get to know the all the April mommas, so..... HI!
persimmon / 1141 posts
that is so funny, i was JUST having a conversation with a close mommy friend about car seats and the topic of the transition seat came up. i asked the same question - can i just skip the regular / newborn one and go straight to the transition seat?? and she mentioned you could totally do that, but for her, she found it convenient to use the traditional newborn car seat to carry and click into her stroller those first few months. so many decisions!
i hope everyone has been doing well. i haven't been on the boards too much because of recent work travel (last intl trip, thank God), was sick for a bit, and the holidays and generally just trying to live life before things get crazy next april! i have been suffering from insane constipation these last two weeks though. i took milk of magnesia the other day and basically, had all the symptoms of going to the bathroom (extreme bloating and cramping, i literally looked like i was 8 months suddenly) only to NOT even go in the end. a couple of days later i'm a little bitter but i am definitely going to look into some acupuncture for the constipation. it's gotten so bad in the 2nd tri...

@SupernovaJ: Thanks!
As far as the car seat goes.... I found it so much easier to have DD in the infant carrier for the first 12 (yes, 12!) months. She is a notoriously light sleeper, and if she actually managed to fall asleep in the car, I could just pull the carrier out without having to disturb her.
We moved her to a convertible car seat around 14 months. I do enjoy not having to lug that heavy carrier around, but now, if she falls asleep in it, I find myself sitting in the car until she finally wakes up because I don't dare try to get her out of the car and risk waking her from the only nap she'll get that day. hahaha

@BabyBoecksMom: hi!!! it's my 2nd LO and I'm due April 4 so maybe ill get lucky this time and deliver a few days early. Although not likely since DD made me wait 11 DAYS!
@SupernovaJ: seriously, the constipation is killing me. I easily go 4 days between and I'm soooo uncomfortable. Coffee doesn't help either. I'm going to pick up Colace today.
watermelon / 14206 posts
@BabyBoecksMom: I'm on both boards, too, since I'm due April 6, but my Drs won't let me go past March 29... Welcome to the April board!
@luckypenny: It's more than Winter break, since I'm not going back next semester, and really, I'm not sure WHEN I'll be going back...so it's a really long break!
As far as car seats, I'm going straight to a convertible. Those infant carriers are just too heavy for me. I prefer to just wear LO while out and about. I'm in SC, so I won't need to worry about cold weather too often, so it'll be fine to get in and out of the car ok.

@BabyBoecksMom: Welcome and hello!
DH still can't feel baby kicking, but last night he got a really special treat. He was finally able to SEE him kick my belly. I was watching our little guy kick my stomach and DH rushed in from the entry to see if he could see it, and he did. He thought it was so weird but so cool. Then last night he said, "I am so ready. If the baby was due tomorrow, I would be absolutely prepared."
I said, "Aww that's sweet" but I was thinking, "Yeah, well that's because you don't have to sanitize all the bottle, pacifiers, wash all the clothes, worry about the items we don't get from the registry, set up the nursery, AND go through agonizing pain for hours to get this kid out..." Lol. I let him have his moment.
coconut / 8079 posts
@megz06: how cool! and lol at your reaction to DH. there is a lot to be done before the babies arrive...and the labor part still freaks me out some!
eggplant / 11408 posts
@BabyBoecksMom: hi lovely lady
@SupernovaJ: ugh, I'm sorry about the constipation. I was super, super constipated for pretty much the first 15 weeks, and it was awful. I'm finally going normally, and it is such a relief. Hoping you can find some relief soon. And congrats on being done with international travel! Honestly, I don't know how you did it. That sounds super rough.
@Dandelion: did you enjoy your courses this semester?
@megz06: DH still can't feel baby kick me, either, but I've really only been able to feel it for about a week. And LOL at letting him have his moment. I've recently started freaking about everything that needs to get done, and I'm not sure DH is 100% sure what I'm so worried about. Nothing, babe, just...everything
@jhd: yeah, labor...about that. I had a total freak-out last week about it, but for the moment I'm feeling better. Or rather, I'm thinking: I need to get my butt in gear and start toning if I have any chance of getting this baby out of me!
watermelon / 14206 posts
@LovelyPlum: Meh...most of them were ok, just a lot of brain work. I had one internet course that kicked my butt, but I managed to get through it alive, lol.
@megz06: I feel the same as your DH, lol. If it was going to be tomorrow, I'd be good. But, we'll let LO incubate for a few more months.
I feel LO kicking all the time. He also likes to push a limb out and poke me.
apricot / 335 posts
@jhd: Labor freaks me out too, and until this weekend I have tried to convince myself I don't have to go through it, lol. I'm sure after birthing classes this weekend, I am going to have to accept it and not fear it as much anymore.
@LovelyPlum: I don't think they get it, no matter if it is the first, third, or fifth kid. DH just sees himself holding his son and that's all he thinks about when he thinks about this child coming into the world, so I let him have his moment because he will have reality smacked into his head when he gets up at 2a on a worknight with a baby that won't stop crying, lol.
@Dandelion: It's great you are so ready! I wish I could feel the same. I'm just obsessing over every little thing that hasn't be done. Time is flying by, and I think I convinced myself that time would go slow, but I was dead wrong.
