@gilmoregirl: yay for snow days! we got one too. i'm hoping for another tomorrow. hope you got some good rest today.

@Dandelion: ouch that restless leg does not sound like fun. i keep waking up with crazy pain in my calf muscles. are you feeling any better? bad sleep + being sick can't be good!

@LovelyPlum: sorry you are not feeling well either. i hope it passes quickly! and fingers crossed you have found the perfect place and it all comes together smoothly.

    @Dandelion: Good luck!

My uncle and dad are coming to pain the nursery this Friday while I am at work and then finishing up Saturday morning. I am SO excited, which is crazy because I wasn't even going to redo the nursery. We are taking it from peppermint patty green to white and doing a Dr. Seuss theme. Plus with having a crib I think that is why I am so excited...I can finally put it up.

Just have to keep my fingers crossed that the weather stays decent. We have been having decent days and we have been having very cold, windy days. Icky weather.

@megz06: how exciting! getting the nursery together will be fun! we still have to pick a crib.

@Dandelion: yuck! I always hate long appointments but now I wish I had one to catch up on some reading in my kindle lol

    @jhd: thanks lady!

Ugh, acid reflux has started. I didn't have it with DD so I had no clue what I was in for. Woke up last night with a mouthful of reflux! I had to sleep sitting upright and my throat is BURNING. This is terrible.

The appointment wasn't too bad. More Do's than Don'ts. Just a lot about learning to balance carbs with proteins and learning which carb choices are better.

I go back in a week, to see if I have been managing my sugar levels ok with just diet, or if I'll need some medicine to help counter act it.

  12. Dandelion

    watermelon / 14206 posts

Over the course of 24 hours, following the meal plan and checking my sugar when I'm supposed to, I can't seem to keep a normal level. I know that it means that when I go back in a week they'll put me on insulin. I'm ok with it, but a little mad at my body for being so hormonal during pregnancy.

  13. Dandelion

    watermelon / 14206 posts

@luckypenny: Hows your reflux going? I had that little bout with it a few weeks ago, but so far it's been ok since then. Such a relief, since with S, it was 24/7 from 22 weeks on.

If Tums doesn't work (it didn't for me) get Zantac. It works great.

  14. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@Dandelion: I'm really glad that the appointment went well, but I'm sorry that your levels have been all over the place. Would they jump straight to insulin, or go with Metformin first?

@luckypenny: I second Zantac. I actually have GERD, and I am usually on Zantac. Around Christmas, though, I had to switch to Prilosec, because the Zantac wasn't cutting it anymore. But if you don't have a prior history, it should be enough. Take the drugs-they help a LOT.

    @megz06: yay! Very exciting

So we have our application in for the apartment. It's on hold for us, but we still have to officially apply. If all goes well, we could be there by February 15! Eek!

Question: are you ladies going to do maternity and/or newborn pictures? We were going to do both, but I think at this point, I just want to have newborns taken. Have you looked for a photographer yet? I want to get this figured out now, since you're supposed to do them pretty quickly after delivery. But I'm totally a newbie-I've only ever hired a photographer once before, and it was for my wedding. Any tips?

  15. Dandelion

    watermelon / 14206 posts

    @LovelyPlum: I have no idea.

  16. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@Dandelion: OK-I was just curious. I have no idea what the relationship between GD and "regular" diabetes is-ie, if you treat some with pills, some with insulin, etc. I was on Metformin for PCOS for about 2 years. It's not so bad once you get used to it, but if you cheat and eat something you shouldn't, it makes you (or it made me) hella sick. So it's nice that it's kind of self-regulating. But the side effects do take some time to get used to.

  17. Dandelion

    watermelon / 14206 posts

@LovelyPlum: the way the nutritionist told me, GD is caused by all the crazy hormones my body is putting out because of the pregnancy. Which is why it goes away after birth. But, it acts the same as diabetes, in that the hormones aren't allowing the insulin to knock out the glucose. it just makes tons of extra sugar for me and the baby, which results in a big baby whose body is producing tons of insulin to keep up with it. The result is low blood sugar in the baby at birth, because once the cord is cut, the insulin is still going rampant, but he's not getting the glucose.

I'm pretty sure she said insulin, because she was talking about injections when talking about medicine.

  18. megz06

    apricot / 335 posts

@Dandelion: Darn. I hope that things get figured out for you!

@LovelyPlum: I passed on pro maternity pics just because I have a nice camera and can do them myself since they aren't totally important to me (my MIL is also amateur, so she could take them too since she did our engagement pics). Plus I figure once the baby is born I am not going to care about them as much as I will about having baby pics up.

As far as newborn pics, we did hire someone already. This particular photographer likes to photograph newborns within the first 6 days of life because that is when they are sleepiest. She has a heating blanket that she places them on to make sure they are always warm. For $200 she is giving me unlimited poses and time. She basically goes by baby's time, lol. I also get all the rights to the pics to print them out and post them. She says it takes about 3 hours to do the photos.

Since I obviously won't know the exact date of the birth, she keeps a few open spots around my original due date open just for me, so when baby is born, I will send her a message and she will tell me what days and time slots are open.

  19. jhd

    coconut / 8079 posts

@megz06: that photographer sounds perfect! our wedding photographer did our engagement & wedding pics and we got all the pics on a CD so we could print as many as we wanted. she has moved several hours away but i would love to find someone else like that. i don't want a package that includes prints!!

  20. jhd

    coconut / 8079 posts

@LovelyPlum: I'm interested in newborn pics & always said I would take pics (not necessarily pro) while pregnant since I was always sad my mom had no pics of herself pregnant with me. But now that it's my turn I feel a little self conscious and don't want any pics. But I know that is probably silly!

So had a checkup w the doc today. Said by belly and heart rate (164) are both great but he's worried about my weight I was barely gaining anything for so long and then a ton all at once. So now I'm waiting at the lab downstairs for my blood work (I have to get the shot for having rh neg blood and DH has pos) and just feeling so guilty and terrible.

Apparently eating a lot of fruit is not the way to go. And I've been eating a ton thinking its a low cal way to satisfy my sweet cravings.

Oh wow, I've gotten so, so behind! Things have been pretty nuts lately, we've gotten set up in Boston so I can do research here, but had to go back to NYC last weekend (we were supposed to finally get our changing table delivered but that was cancelled--I have a whole other thread about that ongoing fiasco!), and this weekend too I'll be back home for my appointment on Monday to re-check baby's kidney. I love the work I'm doing here (the library where I'm doing my research has the absolute nicest staff ever!) but I'm not as much of a fan of our temporary living situation. We're staying with a friend of dh's from college, and while he's a really nice guy, it's really bizarre for me to be living with a roomate again (first one, not including dh, since college, ie 8 years!!). Both this friend and another friend who lives within walking distance are single guys, so they just have a very different lifestyle than us and I feel a little like I'm living in a frat house. Super awkward!

@LovelyPlum: yay for new apartment, my fingers are crossed for your application! is it similar to your current one (minus the crazy landlord)? also, I haven't even thought about photography...

@Dandelion: I hope your levels even out!

@luckypenny: sorry about the reflux! I've had some too, especially in the evenings, but nowhere near as bad as a year ago when it was keeping me up all night--I had a terrible bout for about 4 months in between having stomach flu and then the stress of prepping for my phd qualifying exams. I thought I was getting an ulcer or something it was so bad, and Zantac and tums weren't working, but it cleared up a bit with Prilosec, and then only really for real after I took my exams! When I get it now, sometimes drinking a glass of milk really does wonders.

  24. luckypenny

    grapefruit / 4582 posts

@Dandelion: bummer about your levels!! I haven tried any mess yet for reflux. So far just sleeping with an extra pillow helps and my big belly even feels more comfortable that way too.

@LovelyPlum: yay for getting the hold on the apartment. I really hope it works out and that still gives you plenty of time to get settled before baby's arrival.

We did newborn pictures for DD (http://www.ontobaby.com/2012/06/beautiful-newborn-photography-session-with-baby-edith/) and I'm pretty sure we will do them for this one too. But who knows. I liked having them done at our house but if we're in the middle of packing up everything I don't know where we will do it or if ill even be in the mood.

@nana87: how far away is Boston from NYC? Ya living in a frat house would not be my ideal lol but at least you love the work ill try the glass of milk before bed. I actually hate milk but crave it like crazy during pregnancy lol

  25. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@HazelEyes: No reason to feel guilty, Mama-you didn't do anything wrong!! I eat a ton of fruit, too. Sometimes, our bodies just gain in wacky ways. But if your doctor is concerned about it, better to get it checked out now, so that both you AND baby can be healthy. This is not your fault, lady-we're all learning as we go. Keep us updated!!

  26. luckypenny

@luckypenny: your pictures are so gorgeous!!!! The travel time for Boston-NYC depends if we're driving or taking the train, but it's about 3-4 hours. Not exactly close, but doable for all these weekend trips back and forth...I'm not sure we're going to make it the whole 2 months we're supposed to be here though, it might get to be too much!

  28. LovelyPlum

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@Dandelion: gotcha. So insulin it is. That's kind of a bummer, but if it will keep you and baby healthy, sounds like the way to go. How are you with needles?

@megz06: that sounds like a great package! I'm sure the heated blanket helps a ton, and what a great deal!

@jhd: yeah, I really don't want them now, either. Not that I don't want to see me pregnant, but if we only have so much money to spend on pictures, I'd rather them be of baby. I think we're going to go with a team that will do some family pictures for a small fee, as well. That seems like a better way to go than just DH and I for maternity pics.

@nana87: frat house, huh? Because *that's* exactly what you need while 7 months pregnant I'm sorry, that sounds super frustrating. When do you get to go home? I will say, though, I do love Boston. Are you going to be able to do anything fun while you are there, or will you be stuck in the archives all day? // Also, the (hopefully) new place is a similar size, but much better layout. It's close to where we live now, but I like the street a little better. It's quieter, though there is less parking. The bedroom and living room have a nice lay out, and there is a DISHWASHER!!!!!!! (DH is a huge fan). The biggest issue is that we will have to get rid of our satellite TV, which we do really like, because the building doesn't allow it. But whatever, I'm willing to forego that for a better place!

@luckypenny: first of all, I didn't know that was your baby's name. LOVE! Packing would make things a little crazy. Could you find someone to go to a local park with? (I guess I'm assuming SF weather is nice enough for that in April). And thanks. In a way, it's really nice that we don't have anything done for this kid yet. That way, we can concentrate on getting everything done when we get to the new place. Though, if you had told me in July that I would have to move when I was 32 weeks pregnant, I would. have. lost. it. Now, I'm getting excited to start somewhere new with baby. My, how things change

@LovelyPlum: the new apt sounds great!! dishwasher makes life so much easier my grant to be here in Boston is for 2 months, so we're saying we'll be here through March 10 or so, but we'll see, I'm not sure we'll make it that long! We haven't done anything fun yet besides check out some restaurants near our house. Actually, I haven't even been to Boston proper yet: we're living in Brighton and I'm in Cambridge during the day. If I'm ever here for a weekend though, we def will have to explore a bit!

@nana87: thanks Is the train comfortable? One of the things I'm looking forward to about NYC is that my sister is in DC & I was thinking I could take the kids on the train to visit.

@LovelyPlum: a dishwasher is the best thing ever! Having a fresh start with baby sounds nice I had a friend move at 38 weeks! DH's new job is flexible on when we move so I'm thinking we may stay for most of summer. It'll give DD time to adjust to new baby and have MIL here to help me adjust and then we can pack up slowly. But part of me is just excited and wants to get out there. And thanks about pictures/name! I love her name so much that its making naming this baby difficult. DH and I had no clue on girl names and then E came to us an it just seemed like she had chosen it. It fits her. We still have no idea what to name this one!

@HazelEyes: don't stress!! i have been eating lots of fruit, plenty of veggies, and very little junk food since the holidays and i'm still gaining just as steadily as i did over the holidays and over our move where we ate out a lot. it's frustrating, but it seems my body will just keep gaining now matter what i do. i'm trying to make good choices and not worry about the scale. easier said than done i know, but don't let it get you stressed.

@luckypenny: the train is pretty comfy, especially the Acela (slightly faster but more $--makes a difference in timing for Boston but not really for DC). We used to live in DC and dh's family is there so we do that trip a lot as well, and it is also really easy! I absolutely hate Penn Station, but the secret is to use their Red Cap service: for a small tip (I usually give like $4 if it's just me but I'd give more if I was with kids), a porter carries your bags and puts you on the train before the train platform is announced to everyone else, so you don't have to push your way through the long lines that form to get onto the train. They're super nice too--last time I went, the porter was all excited about my bump and showed me pics of his kids

oh I forgot to mention a fun update! Our shower invites went out about a week ago and it's been exciting to watch the RSVPs roll in (it's a Paperless Post invite, and I have access to the tracking info ) and also watching items get bought off our registries! The shower isn't until Feb 23 but we've already been gifted some huge items, I'm really surprised, and so humbled!

    eggplant / 11408 posts

@Dandelion: I forgot about the progesterone shots. So maybe it wouldn't be so bad. A pain in the butt, but if it will keep you sane and LO healthy, sounds like a good thing. Would your dietary restrictions be eased a bit if you had help from insulin?

@nana87: wow, that is a long time (in real world terms, not research terms). I wouldn't blame you in the least if you didn't make it that long! You've been a total rock star for getting as much done as you have. My brain feels fried on a regular basis, and I'm not even researching yet. Mad props, mama. // Also, exciting about your shower! Even though we weren't planning on having one, I've found myself getting excited about it. You're right-it is SO humbling!

@luckypenny: that sounds like a good plan. I can understand needing some transition time, especially with 2 and with such a big change! I know we need a little bit, too, but at this point, I just want to be there and be done with it. If we don't get this place, we'll keep looking for another March 1 opening. If that doesn't work out, though, we'll definitely be gone by June. I'd rather move before baby, but either way, I know it's coming soon!

@jhd: thanks! Not going to lie, that is DH's biggest excitement about the new place. He's currently our live-in dishwasher, and I think he'd like to retire, or at least hire some backup

@HazelEyes: when will you know your results? Were they looking for anything in particular?

Oh, I don't know if I mentioned it earlier or not, but I found out on Sunday that baby is breech. I'm trying not to let it get me down, since so many babies flip between now and 39 weeks. And in the end, I know that the goal is a healthy baby, so if I need a C-section, it's not the end of the world. In my rational mind, I know this.

But, I'm ashamed to say, I'm disappointed and worried. Surgery scares me, and anesthesia makes me sick. Now, when I feel kicks, I'm thinking, "is it higher than before?" when really, I should just be glad that baby is moving. I know that if baby doesn't flip, I'll feel like I've failed somehow. And I hate that I feel this way. C-sections are there for a reason, and I know we have to do what is best for me and for baby. If that's surgery, it doesn't mean that I gave birth to him or her any less. But right now...I just don't know. Sigh.
