I just booked my NT too, so I am adding it. Even though they say it can be done between 11 and 14 weeks, they just will only book it in your 12 week. So annoying. I am so big. Our receptionist at work yesterday said "you're pregnant" when I walked by her yesterday. We had our first regular prenatal this morning, which was nice and boring. Glad we're getting back to that!

@loki: What a beautiful picture! So happy for you!
Ladies, I have been off the boards for a while, but I'm back to ask you guys a question... What rules have you broken so far?
I'm so bad... 10w in, I've already broken the deli meat rule and today... the sushi rule. So so bad...I was feeling pretty under the weather, and the only thing I could imagine stomaching was sushi! So I got one California roll (no raw fish!) but also a spicy salmon roll...
The deli meat was because of lunch they offered us at a teacher training. What was I supposed to do, take it out? Maybe...
Have any of you broken any sacred rules?

@ineebee: thanks! i had a couple sips of champagne at a wedding so i'm not too concerned about it. i promised myself i wouldn't drink any pop buuuut i've had quite a bit. i don't drink coffee sooooo... i'm not beating myself up about it. i had a bath the other day and didn't even THINK about it until i got out! oopsies. and i haven't done it yet but i'll get my hair dyed whenever i need to!
persimmon / 1363 posts
@ineebee: I am like, only into rules that really have a scientific basis. They sushi one doesn't except mercury in tuna, so I limit that. But I had sashimi yesterday. And on Friday. And I had deli meat yesterday too. Motherisk is my go-to source for rules, and they say sushi, soft cheese, and deli meats are fine: http://www.motherisk.org/prof/updatesDetail.jsp?content_id=925
The only things I really avoid are too much mercury, uncooked sprouts and alcohol.

@ineebee: welcome back! I had a MC a year ago, so have been super vigilant about not breaking any of the rules, though have taken baths and gotten my hair colored...I'm a decaf latte drinker, but haven't even had one of those since we found out (in 6 weeks!). However, once I hit 12 weeks, I'm booking a massage appointment and treating myself to a coffee!
How are other people handling caffeine? I've read that one cup of caffeinated coffee per day is acceptable, but have gone completely off it for now. I'm curious how you guys are with caffeine?
pear / 1580 posts
@loki: I like your attitude! I feel the same way. A teeny bit here and there is probably gonna be okay. As for the sushi, I can't even imagine all the pregnant women in Japan foregoing sushi for 9 months. That's what I keep telling myself anyway.
I have an appointment tomorrow (yay!) so maybe I'll just mention it to see what she says.
persimmon / 1363 posts
@SunshineMcC: I follow the 250 mgs of caffeine a day rule - but really I only ever had that much anyway!
kiwi / 563 posts
@Rockies11: what's the deal with uncooked sprouts? I don't normally eat those, but hadn't heard to stay away from those.
pear / 1580 posts
@SunshineMcC: Thanks!! I love the taste of coffee but can't handle the caffeine very well (gives me jitters). So I've been pretty happy with my super fancy water-processed decaf. I feel like the sugar I need in my coffee is probably more damaging than the caffeine!

@ineebee: My personal philosophy is that if it is really not a good idea for a non pregnant person then it isn't a good idea for a pregnant person. Really alcohol isn't all that good for anyone, mercury/tuna in large quantities isn't good, and raw food is not necessarily good for anyone.
I have had a touch too much tuna lately. I had a foot long subway tuna melt (because the guy working didn't make it a 6 inch like I asked...) and then two other 6 inches within the last week. But it was the only thing that sounded yummy.

@SunshineMcC: They're like literally the only thing besides alcohol that Health Canada tells pregnant people to avoid. I am obsessed with them - I eat them all the time normally. They have a really high salmonella and e. coli potential: http://healthycanadians.gc.ca/eating-nutrition/safety-salubrite/sprouts-germes-eng.php. I just get them cooked instead and pick them off salads.
pear / 1580 posts
@SunshineMcC: I've heard about the sprouts thing too. Surprising! I haven't eaten them since the BFP, but when (not if!) I do, I think I'm just gonna soak them in a water-vinegar solution to get rid of any bad stuff.
pear / 1580 posts
@Rockies11: Whoa, I must've skipped your post with the motherisk.org link. THAT IS GREAT NEWS!!! I think I'll stick with my gut, which is telling me to limit the deli meats and sushi, but that having a little bit here and there (from a reputable source) is probably going to be okay.
Weeeeeeeeeeee!

@Rockies11: ah, thanks for sharing. You have some awesome links today - really helpful stuff!
persimmon / 1363 posts
@SunshineMcC: The Canadian or UK stuff I always use because there's less concern about liability there and more concern about what makes pregnant people actually sick! I find that with a lot of American sources, the list of things to avoid eating and doing is so long (and so conflicting from source to source) that it's hard to assess the risk of what you're doing and it's hard to comply with it because there are so many restrictions that eventually you just kind of throw up your hands.

@Rockies11: it is so annoying that they give you a 'date range' for the screening tests/scans but then ONLY book you in during a specific week! I also could only have my NT scan in week 12, and yesterday I went in for my first trimester blood draw and they said I was too early even though I was within the date range that they printed out and gave to me the last time I visited! So annoying! Why give a 3 week range if there is only 1 week that they will do it in!?

It's interesting hearing about all the different rules. I have not broken too many. I have had Vietnamese food a few times and although I try to pick out the bean sprouts I think I end up eating some most times...
I agree that the rules in the USA are quite strict although I was reading the Australian guidelines and wow, they are even worse - no pre-prepared salads or eating from salad bars if you are pregnant in Australia! I read that and felt really bad about eating Subway (the veggie delight was the only thing that would break my vegetable aversion!) and people talk about cross contamination (raw sushi touching the cooked sushi you eat, deli meats touching your non-deli meat sandwich...) but then you think, REALLY? There comes a point where paranoia can rule out pretty much anything.
I think I might take a look at the Canadian and UK guidelines!

@lulu22: I KNOW RIGHT? I was so stoked on the way back from the doctor that I only had 2 more weeks of this ridiculous thing where I look super pregnant while pretending to not be pregnant, and now I am looking at two days short of a month to keep this up! I am also obsessed with Vietnamese food, which is why the bean sprout thing is such a downer. I have then do a quick fry up for me of the sprouts to kill the e. coli. But I far prefer their crunchy little raw selves!

Finally had my appointment! Baby is measuring right on track and has a strong heartbeat, but my dr didn't tell me what the hb is. Baby is measuring one day ahead but my dr is going to keep my due date as April 1. So relieved that everything looks good in there. I was so surprised how much baby was moving around in there!
My NT appt is 9/22 and then I have my next appt after that on 10/9 if it doesn't interfere with anything at work.
Can't wait to see more sonograms from everyone!

@Boopers: congrats! so glad the appointment went well - hoping ours will too! So cool that you got to see baby moving around! Was your u/s abdominal or tv?

With my first pregnancy I didn't break many rules - I didn't drink a single ounce of caffeine until my third trimester. But with this pregnancy I've thrown most of that out the window. Most caffeine rules allow for 2-8oz cups of coffee a day or up to (I think it's about) 4 sodas. I try to limit my caffeine intake to about 1-8oz cup or half of a soda. I ate a hot dog just days into my pregnancy, crave deli sandwiches all the time (although kids in my area have died recently from e.coli from a turkey sandwich so I'm skipping that for now), and even have taken a couple sips of beer from my husband's glass on occasion. I think that in moderation almost anything is fine. As my mom says, 20-30 years ago they weren't told any of this and everyone broke the rules and we all turned out just fine. So I'm way more laid back this time, but totally understand how with your first you feel like it's important to follow the rules.
Tonight, btw, is oktoberfest in the neighboring town and I am sure I will be eating sausage, elephant ears, and a sip or two of beer, so I will be continuing the rule breaking.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@marionberry: I'm just not a worrier. I didn't obsess about rules with my first or this time. The only reason I won't be having an occasional drink is because DH isn't comfortable with it & this is his baby too. Also, what's an elephant ear? lol

This week at my conference they had prepared sandwiches and salads for lunch. They also had lots of choices for snacks during the breaks and plenty of breakfast food. I tried to stick with the fruits and veggies for snacks but options were limited for lunch - deli meats and egg salad sandwiches, which contain mayo. Apparently you are not supposed to eat that because of the raw egg preparation. I wasn't about to starve myself so had the egg one day and the deli meats the other. They had some form of chicken thing today, so went with that. So aside from this week, I've been mostly good, but have had a sip of DH's beer a couple of times. Also the week before I found out I was pregnant, I was on another business trip and had about 5-7 beers that week (at 5w).

@SunshineMcC: @Mrs. Sunshine: Yes fried dough covered in cinnamon and sugar. It was divine! I only ate about 1/3 of it because it's huge but it was well worth every calorie.
Get this, I have to fast for 12 hours (7pm tonight until 7am tomorrow) so that I can take a blood and urine test to get life insurance. I'm not sure how I'm gonna make it with these twins. I always wake up in the middle of the night starving.
@Astro Bee: My understanding about mayo and things like caesar dressing is that if it's coming from a bottle (like made by Kraft) you're ok - it has been pasteurized. However, if they're making it themselves (like in a restaurant) you want to abstain. The same thing goes for some raw cookie dough. The kind you get at Papa Murphy's (if you have that where you are) has eggs that have been dried and pasteurized in it, so you can eat all you want.
