Happy Friday!
We had a great appointment last night. I was so nervous but felt great and so relieved after! The baby measured a few days past where I'm at, but we're still keeping the due date the same. We got to see the little one move it's arm, and I was sure it was waving at us! We also got to hear the heartbeat, which was amazing. It was pretty high again, at 170, so my sister is convinced its a girl! After the appointment, DH asked me what it felt like to know there was a baby growing inside of me. So cute! I can't believe we'll be at 12 weeks in a week and a half. Hooray!!

@SunshineMcC: aw such a great appointment! so exciting. and ya getting to 12 weeks will be soooo great, you're super close!
hey, that reminds me... i know there's a lot of debate about what the "second tri" actually is. and i just found this out. i thought after 12 weeks it was considered second trimester but i've heard some people say 13 and some say 14! will you still go public at 12 weeks even if you dont consider it second trimester? and does that mean i'm gonna keep throwing up until FOURTEEN WEEKS?!?!?!?
kiwi / 563 posts
@loki: thanks!! Oh man, I thought once you hit 12 weeks you were into the second tri. Our doc told us last night that once you see/hear the heart rate the risk for miscarriage drops, then once you hit 12 weeks, it drops even more. So we're planning to start telling after 12 weeks, though I might hold off on telling my boss and people at work until a bit later. I hope you start to feel better soon. My nausea has started to let up significantly this week, so hoping yours will soon too!
pear / 1787 posts
@SunshineMcC: i know i thought that too until recently! i was devastated haha. we'll definitely tell people at 12 weeks regardless. i was just hoping this miracle of the second trimester everyone keeps promising me would hit!
i'm okay when i take my medication but i'm noticing it starts to wear off in the evening. last night i took it and then instantly threw up so had to retake it. i feel okay today though, i just need to make sure i take it early enough in the evening.

Hi everyone, I haven't been around much (honestly, I think just trying to stay detached until the first tri passes) but I've caught up on everyone's posts and am happy to see so many great updates. I finally had my first appointment yesterday and we got to hear the heartbeat, which was amazing--I couldn't stop laughing! The midwife said it was nice and fast (though she didn't give me a number), so we're feeling good now. I've been getting sick on and off and had a terrible day this week when I had a migraine too and couldn't keep even a sip of water down. I threw up nine times...it was awful and scary, but I've felt much better since then so hopefully it was a fluke. I can't believe we are so close to the second tri!

@windswept: @SunshineMcC: YAY for great appointments!!!
I had a great appointment this morning, too! At 10w2d, everything looked good, and we were able to hear the heartbeat! I've been pretty proud that I've been able to keep up my workout regimen, but it turned out that my "tight abs" were getting in the way of the doppler! But we heard the heartbeat in the end, so that's good!
She said it was healthy but I forgot to ask for the number.
BUT HERE'S THE THING. There's this new blood test called the Harmony test that detects for chromosomal abnormalities (Trisomy 13, etc.), BUT... IT ALSO DETECTS X AND Y CHROMOSOMES. The earliest the Harmony test can be given is at 10 weeks, and you can get the results within a week.
Which means... we will find out the gender at 11 weeks. SCIENCE!!! Has anyone else's doctor told you about this? Anyone else doing it? Sorry for all the caps and bold -- I just can't believe this!!!!

@ineebee: That's fantastic! My lofty workout goals have been pretty unfulfilled haha. Crazy and amazing you are finding out the sex so early!!
kiwi / 563 posts
@ineebee: yes, we're doing a similar one, called MaternitT21 in a couple weeks, along with the NT scan. Can't believe we get to find out what we're having so early - I love it! Glad to hear the appointment went well! What have you been doing workout wise? I was doing my 10K steps per day, but got SO tired, so have cut back and am only getting 6K in per day now, but am hoping I'll have energy for more exercise soon!
@windswept: congrats on a great appointment! So sorry you had a rough day in terms of feeling lousy - hopefully that's the only one!

@ineebee: that's amazing! I didn't know that. I've been doing my best to workout but last week we were on vacation & this week I've been prepping for LO'S first birthday party tomorrow so I've been slacking the past two weeks. Hopefully I can get back on track next week!

@windswept: @SunshineMcC: As we speak,, I'm on the phone with my insurance company to make sure the [$800] test is covered! I've made some pretty big insurance boo-boos in the past, so I'm trying to make it right! I really hope this is covered! =\
A@SunshineMcC: 6K steps is A LOT! That's great! Especially since that's something you can keep up until the day you deliver! As for my workouts, I've been doing CrossFit since the beginning of the year. I'm totally not a fitness nut, but my coach is awesome, the workouts always change, and it's something DH and I can do together (with me scaling down EVERYTHING, of course). *Not* something I can keep up until the end, but maybe I'll transition to swimming in the 3rd tri? We'll see!
kiwi / 563 posts
@ineebee: Wow, good for you! I've heard that's an amazing workout! I actually need to call my insurance as well, to make sure the test is covered - thanks for the reminder!

Just an update that we got sad news yesterday that one of our twins passed since last week's ultrasound. Luckily, our other 'lil one had a strong heartbeat of 150 and is measuring a perfect size. We are so, so happy about that. But at the same time we are sad we lost one baby.
It's been rough.
Lots of tears and so many mixed emotions.

@SunshineMcC: Crap. Just found out that the Harmony Test is NOT covered. I'm on hold with my nurse so I can cancel it! I hope it's not too late! I guess I'm not finding out the gender at 11w. Womp-womp.
kiwi / 563 posts
@ineebee: Oh bummer, so sorry to hear it. Are you older than 35? My doc said that's the point where most insurances will cover it, in terms of advanced maternal age. I am, so am hoping it'll cover! Sorry you'll have to wait on the gender until 20w!
kiwi / 563 posts
@Jenn23: oh my gosh, I'm so, so sorry to hear this. I wish I could give you a big hug right now. I can only imagine all the mixed emotions. I'll be sending up prayers for you and your family.

@Jenn23: oh I'm so sorry about the one baby, that is so sad. Hope you are doing ok.
I'm having a hard time myself, and am keeping a bit of a distance here until I know more. I have had some bleeding the last few days. I saw my doctor yesterday who went over my scan results from last week. The radiologist said the sac measured 15mm which put me at 5w3d except I was 6w3d so I was freaking out. After googling though, I'm pretty sure that a 15mm sac correlates with a 6w1d pregnancy which makes me feel better. I'm booked for a TV scan on Monday so I'll know by then if this is viable.
In the meantime I'm hoping everything is going well for you April ladies. So many great scan results so far!! It's crazy some of you are getting close to second trimester and your NT scans!

@Jenn23: i'm so so sorry to hear this... my heart is with you! i'm so glad one baby is right on track and looking healthy.

@Jenn23: Sorry for your loss. Glad to hear there's a strong heartbeat with the other. I lost twins in april, so i totally get the mixed emotions.

@delight: Oh, you must be so anxious! So sorry that things aren't going quite as expected, but I'm hopeful that things will get back on track ASAP! Will you be able to do something fun over the weekend to help the time to pass?
@SunshineMcC: I feel like my head is in three places at once. I'm not over 35, but I finally got in touch with my nurse and she said that if insurance doesn't cover it, their practice has a contract with the Harmony folks and it would be free! I LOVE my OB's office. Gender reveal, here we come!

@Marionberry: thanks, I will have to look into that. I have my seriously craving mayo, or rather, food prepared with mayo (ie. broccoli salad, macaroni salad, turkey sandwiches (Canadian Thanksgiving is only a month away!), etc. I will ask my doctor a out it when I see him on Wed. He amazing and doesn't BS me at all. Sadly, it will probably be the last time I see him until after the baby is born, as he will be referring me to the GP who deals with pre-natal within the practice. I'm not considered high risk, so no need for an OB.
A friend of my has seen then same doc for two pregnancies and she said she is amazing. Apparently, she gave birth to her own three days before my friend went into labour, but stopped into the hospital to see how she was doing, and ended up delivering her anyway. Her newborn slept in the next room under the supervision of a nurse!!!

@Ineebee: I will have to ask my doc about the Harmony test next week. We have the NT US the following day, but I'm a little leery of the fact that it's probability/statistics based. I'm a scientist and very familiar with false-positives and false-negatives. My husband and I have had the discussion about how we would handle bad news, but have tabled the discussion until if and when it becomes necessary. We haven't even seen/heard the baby yet! Because of that, I try to keep myself positive, even though there's the chance for a missed mc. But enough about that!!!
I would love to know the sex of our baby early. Does anyone know of it's offered yet in Canada?

@loki: @Banana330: @SunshineMcC: @ineebee: @windswept: thanks so much ladies for positive thoughts. It does make me feel better. I am sick with a cold so I'm just going to rest this weekend and drink lots of water and pray for good results on Monday!
@Astro Bee: I haven't heard of anyone having those early tests in Canada before. I thought it was just something available in the US. Good luck at your NT scan!

Normally the Harmony or MaterniT21 tests are only covered for moms over 35 or those at risk for genetic disorders. I'd LOVE to get it! But we'll have to wait until the normal anatomy scan to find out the sex.
I've been drinking a big cup of coffee every morning which has been crucial since I've been so tired. I don't get worked up over the occasional diet soda either, though those are pretty rare for me. I've also had quite a few tiny sips of beer. As far as all the "rules" go, mercury and other toxic chemicals that have bioaccumulated in the fish we eat is by far the most real threat to our babies. Listeriosis is real too, but the chances are pretty low, whereas eating tuna (high levels of mercury) or fish caught in freshwater streams such as catfish (PCBs) have real serious known health effects. We still go to the sushi truck but I'm sticking to avocado rolls and cooked crab kind of things.
Exciting to hear all the good news from everyone's appointments! I can't believe it's going to be time to start sharing the news soon.

@Delight: Thanks! Good luck with yours, too. I'm sure we (and babies!) will be just fine. I hope you get over your cold. My went 1 1/2 weeks, probably due to the travel in the middle, which convinced caused a relapse. Finally home now, and feeling better (as of this morning) and also plan on taking it easy this weekend, and letting DH pamper me!
On another note, did manage to almost make myself carsick driving last night and this afternoon. Only short city/highway driving, about 30 mins each. My husband laughed at me (I sometimes get carsick with him driving, if traffic is crazy), and said he'd pick up dinner. I do love him!

@Astro Bee: I read on baby centre it is now covered by OHIP but only if you screen high risk during your NT scan. It only started ring covered in July 2014

@Pawprints: Have you had any sips of beer in front of people who know about your pregnancy? I've had a few sips myself (beer and wine) at home from DH's glass/bottle, which I feel no guilt over, the total amount being so insignificant. Our family and very close friends know, but I haven't drank at all in front of them, and aren't sure of what kind of response they would give if they saw. I'm definitely my own person, but don't want to deal with any lecture, if any.
Has anyone dealt with disapproval from friends/relatives either this time around or previous pregnancies for the choices you've made during your pregnancy?
pomegranate / 3658 posts
@Astro Bee: No, my situation is more the opposite - the main reason I'm taking tiny sips of beer is to avoid suspicion from people. (They can't tell that I'm not taking normal size sips). We've only told immediate family so far and I haven't happened to have had any alcohol around them.
I guess I'll take it as it comes, but I am not yet certain how I'll handle judgment if anybody gets their nose in my business about alcohol after they know I'm pregnant. Maybe I'll prepare a few snide responses so I have them at the ready. Or something like "Well I've done my research and made my decision, so the topic is closed."

@Banana330: That is good news! Hoping that my NT scan will show such a low probability of any potential abnormalities that it's a non-issue for additional screening. That being said, my mind won't be completely at ease until I hold my LO in my arms.
Unfortunately, OHIP doesn't cover me, being in the military. I get my us done and deliver at the civilian hospital, but all the work is ordered by military doctor. So who knows! I'll ask next week and see what the policy is.

@Pawprints: Ah, I see! For those around me that don't know and I'm not ready to tell yet, I've been lucky that I'm still recovering from my cold, and have had an excuse not to drink. my husband wasn's arount to sip off of! I know they're suspicious. My co-worker this week has brought it up multiple times that he had been suspicious, but then said, but I can hear in your voice that you're still sick. Lol!

My BIL is getting married next weekend and I have been thinking that I may want to have a sip of champagne to celebrate. We'll see.
