@Jenn23: Typically it's a radiologist, but it could have been a perinatologist as well. I'm sure whoever it was was very experienced and I'm glad they're communicating well with your OB.
@ineebee: Just finished getting over my second nasty cold. With a lo that goes to daycare I swear I'm always catching something.
@PawPrints: We did a traditional birth class at our hospital which I thought was really great and it was very helpful if you had a vaginal labor (which I didn't end up with) because they walked through lots of pain coping mechanisms and such. I missed the breastfeeding class but met up with the trainer personally and she was pretty helpful. I don't think there's a lot of preparation you can do for breastfeeding though - it's kind of a learn as you go thing. For first time moms I definitely recommend the classes!
@sunshinemcc: I really enjoyed the hospital tour because it's nice to see where you'll be, understand what is there and what you'd need to bring, etc. As we get closer I'm sure all of us second time moms can tell you what you'll need in the hospital though!

@SunshineMcC: I still have my list from ds and I just wrote a big pregnancy book for our health system, so I have the one I used for that too. No lack of resources for you ladies!

@Jenn23: shit I have an anterior placenta and had a c-section - am I at risk for it too?
persimmon / 1085 posts
@marionberry: It wasn't a radiologist, so I believe it is a perinatologist. Yes, she already forwarded everything to my OB because I talked to the nurse on the phone yesterday about scheduling to go back for another ultrasound in one month. That visit can't come fast enough!!
@Rockies11: I think 1 C-section is pretty low-risk...the more you have the higher your chances. I've had two major surgeries, plus a d&c from my miscarriage in 2010, so basically the more surgeries, the higher the risk. Plus, I also did IVF twice and I read yesterday that for some reason that, too, causes a higher chance of placenta accreta. I'm sure you are fine!
persimmon / 1363 posts
@Jenn23: I will be sure and ask my OB about it at my appointment tomorrow! Thanks for the tip. I don't know that much about it other than that there was a recent episode of Grey's Anatomy about it that was particularly terrifying, so yikes! We are also mid move with a toddler. It has been terrible.
persimmon / 1085 posts
@Rockies11: You can ask tomorrow, but I'm sure you are fine. I don't think with one C-section it is likely at all. I'm so scared I will develop this problem. I dreamt the other night that I was told I would die during childbirth. I'm really having a tough time with the fact that I could have this problem. I'm super scared and can't talk to anybody because my husband just doesn't want to hear it (why talk about what you don't have? Which does make sense-he is the more rational one) and my mom doesn't want to hear it either. So I just feel alone with worry.
persimmon / 1363 posts
@Jenn23: Yeah, it's totally scary even if you don't FOR SURE have it. Childbirth is scary as shit anyway, even without major life threatening potential problems. I would worry my little head off if I were in your shoes too.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@Jenn23: oh this breaks my heart. Worry won't change the outcome, I know you know that. This board is here so you can vent! "Fear is a liar." Don't let it consume you. You will be in my prayers & know that our ears are always open when you need to talk.
persimmon / 1386 posts
@Jenn23: agree with others, feel free to vent your concerns here! That is scary to even consider that the problem could develop. It's great that they are monitoring you so if you do end up experiencing it they should be prepared to take care of you and keep you and baby safe and sound!
kiwi / 563 posts
@Jenn23: you are definitely not alone. We are all here for you, so vent away all you need. We're in this journey together and I'll be praying for you. Focus on that amazing baby in there!

Thanks so much!! I'm a worrier by nature, but I know it isn't good to worry right now, especially when I don't even have a diagnosis and hopefully won't! I'll try not to think about it, though it is hard. I made my follow-up appt. (ultrasound) for January 6th, so now I wait until that day to see how everything is going. Thanks for the support!!

@Jenn23: oh my goodness, i'm a worrier too so i totally understand and if i were you, i would not be able to be calm about it! i know that doesn't help much, but just know you're not alone and you're not being irrational. as others have mentioned, we are all here for you and you can come to us with your worries and we will totally commiserate. your appointment isn't that far away so i'll be keeping you in my thoughts and hoping for a really great outcome!

I just got back from my 5-month appointment (I think...I'm 23 weeks), and it was the most useless appointment ever! My OB is having me meet two other doctors for my 5-month and 6-month appointments, so I was disappointed that she had me in and out in less than 5 minutes. "How are you doing? Baby moving? Any concerns?" and then she showed me the door! (Okay, so I might be dramatizing a little!)
One thing I was pretty surprised about is that she basically told me to stop my regular exercise routine (I've been going 50-60% at CrossFit). Her explanation made sense - you don't want to strain the core muscles, which is basically the same motion as pushing when you're in labor. But isn't the golden rule "whatever you were doing before you got pregnant"? Anyway, I'll have my glucose test at my next appointment at the beginning of January, so that should at least be a little more interesting!
Any other appointments coming up for anyone?
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@ineebee: I have an appointment in Christmas Eve! I also think it's strange that you were told to stop exercising, especially since you're "taking it easy". I've been told that working your obliques & transverse abdominus (sp?) are okay but not your "6 - pack" ab muscles as that can cause separation that may be painful & you will have to correct after birth....which makes perfect sense to me. You want to surrounding muscles to be and stay strong, just not the ones that are getting entirely stretched out. But what do I know?

@ineebee: I did crossfit my entire first pregnancy. The big thing is to listen to your body. There are some other considerations such as not lying on your back or going upside down. With that, I know a women who was 8 months pregnant who did every event in the last open (as prescribed). So it is possible.
I am so sorry the appointment was not what you hoped for. I had an appointment with my midwife last week (22 weeks) and it was pretty easy as well. Not quite in and out but nothing much to discuss. She said the next two are that way and then things get busy again.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@ineebee: My appointments are often short and sweet, but I have few questions or concerns this time around. My OB told me typically I should move to visits every 2 weeks but since I'm doing well she'll keep me at 3 weeks for now. I do my glucose test then on the 30th.
nectarine / 2317 posts
@ineebee: my midwife appointments have been pretty useless the last few times. Std checks, listen to the baby and any questions kinda thing. But only two appointments left before we move to biweekly which seems crazy.
kiwi / 563 posts
@ineebee: sorry your appointment wasn't what you hoped for! I have my 24 week on Monday if next week. They didn't mention the glucose test last time, so not sure if it's this appointment or at 28 weeks.
When do appointments go to every 2 weeks? I'm guessing with twins earlier. I just want another ultrasound to see the little guy but I don't think that's part of next weeks appointment.
So the shower craze is starting! We have one planned and my best girls just reached out to see if they can plan one, plus my mom wants to either help or host too. How many people is too many to invite to a shower? Trying to decide on one big friend/family or two? The one already planned is separate as DH is a coach and a group of past parents of the sport are doing a couples shower/evening party for us. So fun! Have you guys registered yet? When do you think that's necessary? And any thoughts on the shower timing? We're thinking late February/early March. Baby is due 4/7 so that would be when I'm 34-36 weeks. Is that too late?
Thanks in advance for your input!!
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@SunshineMcC: appointments are usually every 2 weeks starting at 30 weeks & weekly at 35....I had just one shower with LO on the last Sunday in July & she was due at the end of September! lol i wanted to be ready "in case" she came early. I was crazy & had all our bags packed for the hospital by 30 weeks lol that level of crazy never went away for me.
I registered when the shower started getting planned. You definitely want to have most of it rounded out by the time you start inviting people to the shower so if you're asked (or if you want to put the info on the card) people have something to look at!

@SunshineMcC: My mother in law is hosting a baby shower for me on the 21st of this month because we will be traveling to our hometown for the holidays. Both my mom and MIL will be able to go to that one instead of having to travel to where we live to attend. My MIL is inviting 25 people, 20 of which I don't even know! I'm only inviting a handful of people to that shower.
My other shower will be thrown by my sister and close friends in the city we live in. I think I'll be inviting 20-25 people to that too. Work is also throwing me one. I feel badly about having 3, but I don't want to be rude and turn any down and everyone is excited so I'm just going with it!
I've already registered because of the first shower is this month. If it weren't for this shower I probably wouldn't have registered until February. I think my other two baby showers will be in February or March.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@SunshineMcC: My showers last time were in late July and early August with a mid-September baby. I had two showers because I have two families (mom's side, dad's side) but you can have as many as you want and make them as big as you want. Both of mine were about 20 people each. I'd really aim to get your showers held close to 30 weeks. You never know what might happen as you get closer (IUGR, pre-e, etc.) so better to have all of the items sooner rather than later. I posted my "what to register for" previously, but am happy to give suggestions or advice on anything you have questions about!

@SunshineMcC: i'm having two - a friends shower and a family shower. my MIL is hosting the family shower and i think it is going to be pretty big... we're probably inviting about 40 people. it's going to be the first week of march so i imagine a lot of people won't be able to travel for it etc so probably end up with about 20-25 in attendance? my friend's shower is the last week of february so i think that's good timing!
i registered so long ago because i'm a stress case if i don't feel prepared... and i wanted to know which things i felt like i needed to purchase right away and which things i felt i could wait for showers. if anyone wants to critique my registry, feel free! okihiro at babiesrus.ca... keep in mind between me and my mom... we have already purchased lots! haha

@loki: What happened with your US travel system/car seat thing? Did you manage to get it or just pick something else?
pear / 1787 posts
@Banana330: oh man huge debacle. so we were trying to get the refund done before it shipped but that couldn't happen. so it shipped to the brokerage.... i have to go down this sunday to pick it up and then i'm going to take it to the store to return it. the problem is my MIL put it on her credit card because it's a US card and she gets a better exchange. so she gave me the card and a letter of permission to refund it back on there... so i'm hoping that's sufficient. if it's not i'm going to have to find somewhere locally that's open on a sunday where i can mail (!!!!) it back for a refund. #nightmare

@Ineebee: I have an appt next Tuesday. I also found that my last appt seemed really rushed. DH has been going with me so far but won't next week since he'll be out of town. But I don't really have anything to compare it to.
So it turns out that I won't be having a shower, and I'm a little bummed. My mom wanted to throw me one, but my family lives halfway across the country, and we're not going home for Christmas this year because I have to be on-call for work during the holidays. January doesn't work either due to work, and I don't want to travel too late in the pregnancy especially during a Canadian winter. I had thrown two weekend options at mom (last weekend or this) over a month ago, so she could plan and I could get a cheap ticket, but she procrastinated and then gave all these excuses why those weekends didn't work: my dad was working those weekends and my aunt was planning to visit my cousin. Now I've been hearing how much she wants to have a shower (it's her first grandchild), but she hasn't done anything to make it happen, so it probably won't. I suggested a virtual one over skype, but that got shot down super quick.
My in-laws only live 2 hours away, but there's been some bad feelings in the family (ETA: just between them and the extended family; I get along great with my in-laws) since DH's grandmother passed last year, so I don't expect one there, either. I also won't be asking my friends to throw me one, since a couple of them have been dealing with IF.

@Mrs. Sunshine: @Boopers: @marionberry: @loki: thanks so much for your input, ladies! Our goal will be to get the registry done by early January, so I still have some breathing room. I think there might be 30 people or so on the invite list and j was wondering if that was too many, but doesn't sound like it, so thanks!
@loki: @marionberry: I'm definitely going to take a look at your registry info/advice as I ststt to build mine!
@Astro Bee: oh no! Do you think your mom could ask one if your friends about hosting a shower for you? I ask, as my mom is partnering with a couple of my local best friends in planning and throwing the shower. Perhaps someone will speak up and ask to throw you one! I can totally understand not wanting to ask someone though. Keep us posted.
In non-shower news, this under the rib, wrap around to my back pain is getting worse. I have an appt on Monday so going to see what else they suggest. All of the tests on infection, gall bladder, liver and kidney came back negative so I can't imagine what it is, maybe muscular? But I can't imagine dealing with it another 4 months. I also think I'm having round ligament pain. If it feels like when you get a stitch in your side when running, then that's it! But it's much lower on just one side. Oh joy! Thanks for letting me complain!
pear / 1548 posts
@SunshineMcC: I am having the same pain under my ribs! I called the weekend service line after Thanksgiving because I was afraid it was my gallbladder. My dr thinks it's muscular and my body making room for baby. I feel your pain and I hope you get answers soon!!
My round ligament pain is still my biggest complaint. It hurts all day and all night even while sleeping. I'm wearing my belly band folded in half over my maternity jeans to offer more support and it's helped a bit with the pain. As I get bigger I might get a real support band.

@SunshineMcC: today I've been having killer stabbing pains in my right lower belly. I didn't have these last time so they scare me. Sometimes I can barely walk. My dr said relax and lots of water or head to the birth center. I'm attempting the former now.

@Boopers: isn't it awful?! Ugh. I can't even sleep on my right side regularly anymore. Good idea on the extra support for the RLP. Hope it helps!
@marionberry: so sorry to hear it. Good idea on upping the water intake. I've yet to try any Tylenol so might take one tonight to see if it takes the edge off. Sending you pain free thoughts!

@SunshineMcC: Thank you! The pain seems to have gone away for now. Praying it stays that way and yours feels better with Tylenol too!

@marionberry: I've had those pains in my right lower belly. I chalked it up to stretching ligaments. They tend to feel better with heat.
How is everyone's nursery's coming along? We finally got the new light fixture up, new dimmer switch put in and painted the walls! I'm so exicted to clear all the baby crap that's accumluated in our dining room out and up to the nursery this weekend!
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@Banana330: hahaha we still haven't decided if we are moving LO 1 or making the bigger room for the baby. I think we're going to move her but we need to get a storage building to put behind our house first, we have seriously limited space and a huge chair and holiday decor and stuff that we have no where else to put!
pear / 1787 posts
@Astro Bee: aw i'm so sad you won't be having a shower hopefully someone steps up and does something for you!
@Banana330: ugh i have so much to do on the nursery it is stressing me out. i started cleaning it out a few weekends ago but haven't made any progress since. it is a disaster. i need to have it cleaned before our trip in january because my dad is going to come up and paint it while we're away! yay! good idea about the dimmer switch, i'm gonna make my dad install one
nectarine / 2317 posts
@Mrs. Sunshine: @loki: Ya we started early because we had a lot of work to do in the that room in the first place, and I wanted to make sure I had the energy to do it. I still have to build shelves/rail for the closet, then we can worry about smaller touches etc. If it wasn't taking over our dining room I don't think we would have pushed quite as hard to get it done.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@Banana330: We haven't really done anything yet. I think I'd like to paint one of the walls but I need to finally decide on cribs and fabric first. I'm running out of time so I gotta get moving!!

@marionberry: It's so true. Twins are so unpredictable. Two women at my office have had/are having twins. The first worked right up until 38 weeks, the other was so big/uncomfortable she went off on sick leave at 30 weeks. you never know!

@Banana330: haven't done much in the past few weeks but hoping to do lots over Christmas break. DH is a teacher and has 2 weeks off, and I only work 2 days/week the weeks of Christmas and New Years, so we should be able to make a lot of progress then!!

I'm pretty sure I have a sinus infection I've never had one before but my ears, throat & sinuses are bothering me, have been for almost 2 weeks & it's getting (mildly) worse. And all the sinus pressure makes me feel extra tired. Anyone have any advice to help me make it until I see my doc again?
