@Grace: @MrsB2012: @Mrs D: @.twist.: @Alivoo01: Thank you all! My mother stopped by to talk with me (we work in the same building) and I feel a bit better now. Apparently it was other peoples' desire to keep it a surprise shower and she had a feeling that might not be my cup of tea. This weekend was the only one that worked with various schedules. It isn't at her house, so I will have a little bit of time (45 min?) to decompress from the morning craziness. She will go and let the dogs out before our class is done. I will be allowed to get changed into something better than a tshirt and shorts. I don't know where it is, but I have a better idea of what it is, which helps me feel better prepared and not so shaky.

Part of my crazy is that we do it all again on Sunday: class again from 9am to 2pm. No clue what the plan is as far as what we're doing with the kids that day.

Oh, and I had my dr appointment yesterday. Gained 4 lbs in 2 weeks. Yay? On the (major) plus side, baby is still measuring 'perfectly'.

I haven't been allowed to carry our bins of files for months now, but they ARE heavy and the few times I've tried to shuffle them around I've felt twinges, so honestly I'm happy with calling one of the guys over to move them into the conference room for me :). No more of that until I get back from maternity leave!

@StrawberryBee: Yay! So glad to hear your Mom eased some of your concerns. It's nice to know she knows you well enough to realize that isn't really your cup of tea and prepped you for the coming event! You must be so relieved!

Haha - so the invites to my shower just went out yesterday and I started registry stalking today - as if 1) anyone had received them and 2) anyone had actually bought a gift already! haha....crazy preggo lady over here!

@StrawberryBee: Glad you feel a little more at ease with the shower situation. I bet after it's all said and done it will have been a wonderful day!

@Mrs D: Haha I did the exact same thing when my shower invites went out! Aaaand I'm guilty of registry stalking twice/day. I was good and never peaked at my wedding registry, but this is just way too exciting not to!

Ugh, I'm such a slacker - haven't kept up with you ladies in a few days!

Starting childbirth classes tonight - kind of excited, but dreading it a little. Small class - just two other couples, so that should be good.

Found out that a lady from the church I attended growing up wants to throw a baby shower for me, with all of the ladies I know from that church. I wasn't gonna turn it down, but I feel a little strange that so many acquaintances are going to have a party for me.

Everyone keeps telling me I'm crazy to stay at work until July 26 (due Aug 8). I'm wondering if maybe I should change to July 19 instead? But then I'll be sitting at home, and what if she's late? Seems like a long time to wait around for baby. What do you think?

@redsmarties: Oh man, I wonder what people think of me? My planned last day is July 31!!! (Due Aug 7)

@StrawberryBee: So glad you are feeling better about this. Its nice your Mother filled you in and was able to calm your nerves a bit!

@skipper2010: @Alivoo01: So glad I am not alone! I was SO bad with my wedding one - I know I am going to be bad with this one!

@redsmarties: I am working until I cant. I am due Aug 28th(ish) - at least this is what work thinks. My manager and I discussed that my deadline to wrap everything will be Aug 16 and at that point I wont get any new projects that take more than a day or a half a day to complete. I had a stern talk with him the other day about still being CC'd on important emails during my leave - I'm kind of psycho about work and couldn't go 3 months not knowing what was going on. I have issues!

I will come back and reply to everyone tomorrow, I am so bad at this, you girls rock!

I wanted to share what I picked up today, I had so much fun playing with it! I also included my new diaper bag and cribset, pretty much all we have so far. Can you say BEHIND!!! Oh well, we'll get there pretty soon! I hope baby girl likes her Mamaroo as much as her big sister!

@StbHisMrs: Oooohhh love the loot! Where is the crib set from? It looks like a similar style to what we got for LO's nursery! And I love the Mamaroo...I got that for my sister and my nephew was obsessed! What a chic diaper bag - I love the pattern!

@StbHisMrs: So jealous of that Mamaroo! I want one but I just can't justify it. Esp now that my mom has bought us another swing. And awesome swing but not as awesome as the Mamaroo!

@redsmarties: My original plan was to wait until I actually went into labor. I am thinking of taking some comp time I have to start my leave a week before the DD and two weeks after just incase she is early or late, that way I don't have to use my Mat leave time while she isn't here and I can extend it so that I don't have to try to get vacation time after for Hanukkah. People still think I am crazy for that! So, you aren't alone. lol

@StbHisMrs: Awesome buys!!! I love the mamaroo!!! That thing looks so cool!

Also, my mom totally has one of those ceramic jug things in the background. Random, but it reminded me of her. lol.

@redsmarties: @.twist.: Um. I plan on working up until I give birth...

@StbHisMrs: Great loot! I'm also coveting the mamaroo. We registered for one so we'll see if someone picks it up for us. If not, we plan on getting one any way.

@Alivoo01: I was going to work up until labour, but a couple of the other ladies who've been pregnant here said that they had the same plan and it never ended up working out because they were just so exhausted. So HR kind of pushed me a little to at least leave a week early.

    @.twist.: @skipper2010: @Alivoo01: @Mrs D: Thank you!!

@redsmarties: I'm planning on working up until my duedate? That's probably wishful thinking, but the more time I spend at work before baby the more time I can spend later with her :). Plus I'm closer to the hospital at work by thirty minutes lol.

I would hate to just be sitting at home WAITING. It would drive me batty. I hope we're like most women and contractions/water breaking starts safely at night.

@StbHisMrs: so cute!! I don't know much about Mamaroos, but it looks comfy

@Mrs Hedgehog: FYI, for my state/company it was explained to me that I couldn't take more than 12 weeks FMLA, regardless of how much personal time I had accrued. I could come back and then go back out again, but I couldn't be gone for more than 12 weeks consecutively.

  18. Mrs D

    grapefruit / 4545 posts

@StrawberryBee: I agree on the waiting at home thing - I'd go insane!!!

@Mrs Hedgehog: I was also told the same thing as @StrawberryBee: about FMLA...to take more than 12 weeks consecutively I would need to come back and work a day before taking my PTO

@StrawberryBee: Don't feel bad at all about being so stressed! Just be thankful someone told you in advance so now you can actually pick out a nice outfit ahead of time. Are you sure it's not going to be at your house? Maybe you should change at the childbirth class before you leave and apply makeup in the car on the way there just in case.

Before we even announced my pregnancy, I made DH swear up and down there would be NO surprise showers - or surprise anything. I figured people would have to go through him in order to surprise me. I think it's cruel to throw a surprise baby shower for a pregnant lady, when she's clearly at her most exhausted and frumpy feeling. We actually took charge in planning both of the showers, picking the dates and asking the hosts to plan it (which they would have done anyway so it's not like we were being greedy). I did this JUST to avoid any surprises.

    grapefruit / 4187 posts

@StbHisMrs: Wow, that's awesome!! I saw those at bbbaby and was mesmerized. I definitely would have considered getting one if we didn't live in such a small apartment, I am keeping our gear to a minimum for now, we'll buy more if nothing works and we're desperate after the baby comes lol!

  21. Alivoo01

    wonderful olive / 19353 posts

@.twist.: I have a meeting scheduled with HR to discuss everything in 2 weeks. Guess we'll see what they say then! I also plan on working from home the last 2 weeks, if possible since the hospital is about an hour away from work SANS traffic.

@StrawberryBee: @Mrs D: My work makes me use my PTO to help cover the unpaid portion of FMLA, so it's used in conjunction WITH FMLA. Totally sucks!!

  22. StrawberryBee

    nectarine / 2530 posts

@Modern Daisy: I know, they did the same surprise shower thing for my wedding and I found out in advance (because nobody can seem to come up with a plausible excuse for why I'm going over my mother's house.) This time it was, DH: "your mom wants me to go over her house after class so I can take a look at her radon fan. Also, we'll be going twenty minutes out of our way to drop the kids off at her house just for the heck of it." You know, because the kids want to spend six hours at my mother's house and then look at a radon fan.

My mother told me that the shower's at a nice place that she thinks I'll really like, and that she's a bit concerned about the heat projected for this weekend and is going to be absolutely sure that the a/c is working there. Class ends at 2pm and the shower invites said everyone should gather at 3pm, so we'll probably make our entrance at 3:20. I have a personal guess as to the location. I'm not sure what the original plan was for getting me from my mother's house to the shower location (I originally assumed the shower was at my mother's house, like my wedding shower was). Pretty sure I'd pick up on the fact that we weren't heading home! Beat me over the head unconscious?

@Alivoo01: I have to use two weeks of my own time for my short term disability (6 weeks total STD if vag, 8 weeks if C). I'm not sure if work forces me to use my PTO for FMLA since I was planning on doing so anyway (need to be paid! My paycheck covers mortgage, bills, etc). I expect to have 14 days of vacation time and 48 days of sick time accrued when I go on mat leave, which equates to over 12 weeks, so I should still have 4 weeks left over when I come back from leave. This is what happens when you accumulate sick time for ten years lol.

  23. Alivoo01

    wonderful olive / 19353 posts

@StrawberryBee: LOL at your hubby's non-chalant "just because" explanation.

And that's awesome you accumulate sick leave!! Sick leave is the same as PTO at my company so you use PTO for any time you want to take off, regardless if it's due to illness or not. Boo!

  24. StrawberryBee

    nectarine / 2530 posts

@Alivoo01: Yeah, it's pretty nice! The caveat is you can't apply sick time if you leave the company; it's a use it or lose it policy.

Even nicer; since I'll have been 12 years with the company this fall, I will start accumulating 4 weeks of vacation time each year, starting in 2014 :).

@StbHisMrs: I LOVE that diaper bag! Seriously - have some PPB envy going on! So beautiful.
@.twist.: @Alivoo01: I think its a little different too, because I have a year of leave. So its less of a panic for me to 'waste' one of my weeks sitting at home. But I'm SURE I can make it until July 26!
@Modern Daisy: I hate surprise parties too. Luckily, people know me well enough, so I know about my showers.

Picked up the glider from Walmart tonight (and DH hauled it up the stairs by himself 0_o). I love it, so comfy!!

Also ordered the rock n play and car seat base from no better deal. Whoop whoop!

  30. MrsB2012

    nectarine / 2466 posts

@StrawberryBee: i was looking at the gliders from Wal Mart as well but wasn't sure what quality they'd be. Glad to hear you like it, I might have to grab one from there then.

I'm a little nervous, I feel like babe might have flipped into breech position today. I could completely feel her flip or twist or something this morning. All day I've been extremely uncomfortable, with sooo much pressure in on my upper right side below my ribs. It's quite painful, and my back suddenly got very sore today as well. My mom couldn't believe how 'high' my belly looked today. Anyone have a breech baby? Is this what it's like?

  31. Mrs D

    grapefruit / 4545 posts

@StrawberryBee: color me jealous also!!! Our time off is all considered PTO (no separation for sick/vacation whatnot!). I just learned last night that I have to use the STD immdietely following the birth (per the Dr's notice) then before FMLA kicks in I can take a week or two of vacay before going unpaid. Someone told me last night at a work event that the first two weeks of STD are full pay (then drop to 60%) so I will be pretty stoked if that is the case!

Also - I decided I was going to get DH a Keurig for Fathers day. He has been eyeing them for a while and a few people on here have commented that their ease of use is totally worth it when LO comes. Its definitely a partially self-serving gift...oh well!

AFM - registry stalking in full effect over here! So far our convertible car seat, rock n play, snug a bunny gym and bath tub/bathing accessories have all been purchased! Its like I get to open the gift twice (once when I registry stalk and once at the shower!) My sister also keeps telling me all the RSVPs - so I get daily little surprises from her which is awesome.

Tomorrow the rest of our furniture arrives. By then we'll have the rocker, crib, changing table and book shelf in the room - I'll post a pic of it "pre-decorating". My mom is coming to taking me shopping (belated bday gift) and will be helping me get the decorating underway! So excited!

@MrsB2012: I'm always curious to see what position the baby is in since he's been moving so much lately. I have a sonogram scheduled for when I'm 36 weeks to see which way he is facing. I think I had sciatica pain on my left side yesterday because I woke up with excruciating pain in my lower left back that affected my hip/leg joint. So painful that I could barely walked and contemplated about telling my boss I was going to work from home!

@Mrs D: I started registry stalking when our invites were mailed out, but so far, only a handful of items have been picked up; but I totally understand your feeling of opening the presents twice!

And yay for remaining furniture arriving today and the nursery being underway! Hubby and I are planning on cleaning out the office this weekend so we can start setting it up as a nursery.

  33. StrawberryBee

    nectarine / 2530 posts

@MrsB2012: I'll try to take a picture of the glider later today (I want to see it in the sunlight myself! Ran out of the house this morning without peeking into the room). I will say that the seat is a bit short (I feel like my knees hang off it slightly), but I'm also short so I don't think it's going to bother me.

First baby here so I have no experience with breech babies, sorry :(. I do believe it's still possible for the baby to shift into head down position.

I feel really uncomfortable lower down today.

@Mrs D: Can't wait to see the pictures of the room! We would not survive if I was missing paychecks for three months. Totally broke that rule of having a reserve in place; if I get laid off we are officially screwed.

  34. Mrs D

@StrawberryBee: Ditto - 3 months without pay is not an option for us.

Ladies...any thoughts on where to get nailpolish in bulk for cheap? I'm shopping for my shower favors and trying to find the best price! I scoping out all the pharmacy stores for deals now - but figured I'd ask here too!

  36. Sapphiresun

    nectarine / 2220 posts

@redsmarties: that was my initial declared end date as well (due aug 12) and I'm rethinking a bit for the same reasons. I don't want to be sitting at home for 5 weeks waiting for something to happen. But in my case there's a lot of discussion of early induction due to the GD (which is a whole other stream of anxiety and questions) anytime after July 22 now so I'm almost definitely moving it back a bit as information comes more solid.
Obviously the Canadian system is a bit different and I feel like there's no benefit to "being a hero" for us. I've accrued over 150 paid sick days over the 10 years I've been here (we get 18, I rarely use more than 3) so my dr is pretty much like "as soon as you're ready I'll write you a note to be off until baby comes" and then 1 year mat leave will start on the actual due date so no real penalty to going of early besides thinking I'd be bored at home for 7 weeks.

@StrawberryBee: hahahaha that kit is hilarious and cute!!! If you do it, take pics!

@MrsB2012: ah yea, I have no idea which way he is half the time. I *think* he's head down, because I get most kicks in the right side of my ribs. Otherwise, I have no idea...

@Mrs D: Yay for furniture!! I also have no idea where you can get bulk nail polish. Although, a dollar store might have some real cheap stuff!

  38. Alivoo01

    wonderful olive / 19353 posts

@Mrs D: What about Sally's Beauty supply or vendors that supply wholesalers, but are also open to the public?

@Sapphiresun: Again, totally jealous of you Canadian bees and your one year leave! And you get to start taking leave PRIOR to birth and it doesn't affect your maternity leave - totally jealous!!!

  39. Sapphiresun

    nectarine / 2220 posts

@Alivoo01: there's a combination of leaves available. So, in my year off my employer pays me nothing but has to hold my position or provide me with a comparable position upon my return. Employment insurance will pay me $485/week to be at home with baby for a year (my husbands company tops this up to 93% of his salary but mine has no top up benefit) But I also have sick days that accrue every year that I could use, and I still have the balance of my pro-rated vacation time to use before I go. If I didn't have sick leave accrued and required a medical leave anytime prior to 6 weeks before the due date EI pays the same $485/week and then maternity leave would have to start 6 weeks before baby is actually born so that would eat into it a bit.
So yeah, my best bet is to take work funded sick leave in the weeks prior to the birth and then commence mat leave on the actual day (17 weeks) and then parental leave for whatever portion of the 35 weeks were given to split how we see fit between me and DH.

@Mrs D: @StrawberryBee: That's crazy! I would be so angry if they told me that! I work for the city and since my job doesn't get the luxury of getting holidays off we are given 80 hours of holiday time to use when we like throughout the year. We also have the option to receive overtime pay or comp time when we work overtime (which happens a TON) so I have been stocking up on Comp Time. Even though my job is full time, it is still considered hourly to allow for that option. Yay public service! But because of that, they can't deny me the ability to use my earned time. Luckily that means I can use it to extend FMLA.
