August 2013 Mamas

@StbHisMrs: I had an appt yesterday, and my OB mentioned starting at my next appointment, she's going to do a cervical check to see if I've dilated or not. All I thought about was you! And the fact that we're close enough to start checking!! Eek! I'm keeping my fingers crossed you're more than OK!

@.twist.: I haven't checked out the July board, as I can barely keep up with the rest of you August mamas as is! haha! Crazy to think we're in the final stretch of the 3rd trimester. As I was telling StbHisMrs, I'm starting cervical checks at my next appointment to see if I've started dilating or not. Say what?!

And holy cow, your office is empty! Go your hubby! My office still has 3 bookshelves and big ole couch with baby stuff tossed in here and there ala @Delight's nursery. I try not to look in there because it overwhelms me a little. LOL!

@skipper2010: I think @sarbear: is the one with the scheduled c-section at the beginning of August. Our board is hopping so often, I lose track all the time!!

@Sapphiresun: Ours is still an office also so don't feel bad! We have the crib setup, but that's about it. All baby clothes are still in bags and all baby related items are still in their boxes in the closet or somewhere in the office. I really want to at least have the office cleared out by the beginning of July. My original "deadline" was June, but the place we're putting everything isn't quite ready yet.

@MrsB2012: I think pregnancy hormones are starting to kick in for me a little. I get so irritated easily lately, it's bad. Especially when it comes to work because it makes me a grumpy bear, and I didn't hide it too well a few weeks ago. My boss told me if I needed to go home, I could because I looked upset. Oops!

@delight: haha! Honestly, you can't see the other side of the room! LOL. It's way more of a disaster area. I took a picture of the best corner. There are a TON of holes in the walls from roommates over the years that need to be filled and then we need to paint. Also, my husband has a very "dirty" job so the carpet is so gross. You can actually see outlines from the desk mats and the carpet are two different shades. ew. Needs to be shampooed ASAP!

@Sapphiresun: Oh, I hear ya, my energy lately has totally plummeted! I'm also super excited to see those July ladies go into labour. Excited and... totally freaked out a lot a bit.

@Mrs D: Totally scares me too!! It's coming up way too fast!

@Alivoo01: OMG! You're starting cervical checks? That's insane!!! I wonder if she'll do one at my next appointment? That just brings everything to a whole new reality. woah. And yea, as I mentioned to delight, I took a pic of the best corner, the other side of the room doesn't look as nice. haha!

@Alivoo01: cervical checks scare me! I don't even know what's going on down there anymore it's been so long since I could see down that way. I'm embarrassed to have anyone look, but I guess I have to get used to it

I'm excited to have my DH come to my appointment next week because he hasn't met our OB yet. He's taking the day off work because we have our pre admit at the hospital.

I'm off to Michigan for the weekend for a scrap booking retreat with my MIL and SILs. We are taking two cars just in case anything should happen to me. Don't want to have to birth a baby on the Yankee side of the border

@delight: lol! I did a "blind" trim the other day and DH laughed at the.. uh.. results. hahaha I'm really scared of anyone looking down there too but I'm TOO scared to get waxed! Don't know what to do!

@Mrs D: Lynn is my middle name, too As far as deadlines, I'd like all of that stuff to be done by mid or late July. And thanks for all those lists! They are amazing and also very intimidating!

@JamieLee: So sweet of your DH to paint the nursery! And I really like that glider!!

@Modern Daisy: What is the deal with people and blankets?! I really don't understand!

@.twist.: Glad everything went well at your prenatal appointment the other day! The thought of weekly visits really scares me! We are so close! Oh, and I am always convinced I am squishing her head when I sleep on my side. I breathe a huge sigh of relief every morning when I feel her move! And yay for nursery progress! That's so awesome that your DH cleared out so much stuff!

@Alivoo01: Ok, the cervical check comment really made me freak out! I want to meet our little girl so badly, but I have become increasingly more panicked by the thought of delivering her. I guess it's just a fear of the unknown, but I feel so scared & unprepared!

I had an appointment this morning and all is well! Baby's heartbeat was strong. My BP and weight are good, and my belly is measuring right on track. The appointment lasted all of 5 minutes! My OB gave me a prescription for the tdap vaccine and recommended I get it before my next appointment in two weeks, so I am going to get that done ASAP. DH and my mom are going to get one, too. Other than that not much else to report...hope everyone is doing well!

@Mrs D: near Ann Arbor! Going to a scrap booking bed and breakfast. Can't wait! Only about 3 hours from our place in Ontario.

@.twist.: oh man I really need to do a blind trim but scared of cutting myself. But I will have to soon before all these cervical checks (and delivery!) takes place!

@lawbee11: sounds like a good appointment! Mine are only ever 5 minutes too.

@delight: yay for Michigan! Enjoy our fine state...lol!

I've been wondering when cervical checks would start...I imagine that's coming soon for me too.

@delight: Oh sounds super fun! If you need a sweet treat while here go to Zingermanns bakery and get a brownie (or really anything from there - its all incredible!). Their brownies are TO DIE FOR!

@lawbee11: Glad your appointment went well - I had the tdap vaccine 2 years ago (one of the joys of going to India is that I am now vaccinated against basically everything) so I am set - but I wonder if I should have DH and my parents?! Did the Dr recommend DH and your mom get it. And seriously...you have the coolest name ever

  10. lawbee11

    GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts

@Mrs D: She definitely recommended that my DH get it. My mom actually brought it up on her own and said she wanted to get one. My OB gave me an info sheet from the CDC and it says adults who expect to have close contact with a baby younger than 12 months should get it, so I guess it depends how much your parents will be around the baby?

@Alivoo01: Cervical checks already?? YIKES! How many weeks will you be once they start them? My OB hasn't mentioned anything about them yet.

At 34 weeks I'm starting to feel the pressure now! lol It's hard to believe that in just a couple weeks he could theoretically come at any time! Better start working on that hospital bag. Of course I keep reminding myself that I could have up to 8 weeks left if he's stubborn and late, but it's just crazy to think that soon we'll all be on high alert for baby! Eeeek!!!!

So, I am at home today because our city has literally flooded. There is one road entering into the core that is not under water, half the core housing has been evacuated and our city has declared a state of emergency. All fresh water in stores is gone, this is kinda weird. There are zoo animals in the jail because they were also evacuated....

@lawbee11: I don't understand about the vaccine. Did you not get the TDAP as an infant? Is this a difference between the US and Canada? My doctor never mentioned the vacc to me. I know I was vaccinated as an infant so that means I don't have to do it now right?! Help me!

@.twist.: wow that is so scary! I hope you and your family are safe!

@delight: thank you! We are safe, as far as I know and my husband and I live on a hill in the subs so we're actually offering out house up for anyone who's been evacuated! Here's a couple pics. That is the one bridge not covered in water!

Eta: or, at least the exits and entrances to the bridges are not flooded on that bridge.

hope all you ladies are doing well! nearing the end!!!! everything is looking good with the baby over here. I have my next appointment in 3 weeks and i'll have my group B strep taken. I was really hoping to get out of it, since i'm having a csection, but he said they still have to do it, incase there is something wrong with the baby, they need to know the results. plus he'll do one cervical check, after that, no checks for me! one perk of having a scheduled csection i'm guessing.

hope everyone is hanging in there :o) you'll be meeting your babies so soon!!!!

    wonderful olive / 19353 posts

@skipper2010: I'll be 35 weeks when I get my first cervical check.

@delight: You're supposed to get a booster for every 10 years.

@Mrs D: Like @lawbee11:, my OB said anyone that will be in close contact with LO should get the shot. I'm having the hubby and my mom get it since they'll be spending extended amount of time with DS.

@.twist.: OMG! It rained that much?! Animals in the jail??? Craziness!

@sarbear: I can't believe we'll be meeting our LOs soon!!

@.twist.: Holy crap! That is scary! Glad you are ok!!

@delight: Ok, I am definitely no expert, but I've done some research and here's what I've found. "DTaP is a vaccine that helps children younger than age 7 develop immunity to three deadly diseases caused by bacteria: diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis). Tdap is a booster immunization given at age 11 that offers continued protection from those diseases for adolescents and adults." I have no idea if I had the booster when I was 11 (I also have no idea if it's this way in Canada). My OB also mentioned that getting the vaccine during the third trimester provides some immunity to the baby (versus getting the vaccine in the hospital after the baby is born which is the way it used to be done). Here's a link to the handout she gave me: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-td-tdap.pdf. I don't know what the Canadian equivalent to the CDC is, but you may be able to find more info on their website. Hope that helps!

ETA: There have also been recent outbreaks of whooping cough in the US which is why this may be a bigger deal here than in Canada.

  19. Mrs D

    grapefruit / 4545 posts

@lawbee11: Thanks for that link. I am doing some research today on what vaccines I want people to get. Can you get the TDap at like walgreens or is it a Dr only thing?

@delight: the infant shot is your first - most are only good for 10 years...hence why I had to have like 8 shots before I went to India 10 years ago. In the US (and I am guessing Canada) these types of diseases are only really dangerous for infants with low immune systems - the older population is not normally susceptible however I am guessing the older population can be a carrier which is why those who will be coming into close contact with newborns need to get them again...

@Mrs D: You can get it at Walgreens/CVS/grocery store pharmacies. I would just call ahead to make sure they have it in stock. I called our grocery store pharmacy last night and they have it but it's $59.99. I am going to call my GP and see if she'll give it to me then I'll only have to pay the $20 copay.

@Alivoo01: it did rain a lot, however we have two major rivers running right through our city core and they both connect to the mountains which is where a lot of the water is coming from.

@greenebee: least we can do since we have beds and room and the rec centres are getting full.

@sarbear: can't believe how close you are to meeting your LO!

Thanks for all your thoughts ladies. It's supposed to keep raining so we'll be stuck in this for a few days I think since the rivers are still rising.

  23. Alivoo01

    wonderful olive / 19353 posts

@lawbee11: @Mrs D: My OB administered the shot for me during my office visit. I didn't even know I was getting it, but when I walked into the room, the nurse came in with a shot and explained to me what it was, etc.

I would definitely call your GP so that the cost isn't so high! That's how the hubby and my mom will be getting theirs.

@.twist.: More rain?! Craziness! Tell it to come on down South to Texas. We need it.

@Alivoo01: @lawbee11: @MrsD: ok I definitely have to look into this then! I'll ask at my appointment next week. Thanks for all the info! I didn't realize it was an immunization we get as an adult. I very well could have had it done as a teenager and I don't remember. I never can seem to find my little card that shows what vaccinations I've received....ooops

    @.twist.: Yikes, stay safe!

@lawbee11: Depends what province you're in and how old you are. Supposedly in BC it's done in grade 1 or 2 and then not again if you're older than grad class of 2006 (which my nurse that discussed it with me asked if I was and I was VERY flattered, haha) and if you're younger than that you got a booster I think they said grade 11, at least for whooping cough. I just had some bloodwork done last week to check my immunities, but it was for some doctor's "study" on pregnant women/pertussis immunities, so I don't think that's standard.

@.twist.: I saw that on the news last night and thought of you. Glad to see that you are above water! And I loled at the animals in the jail. I'm picturing them in the striped suits. How much rain did you get? We had 2 inches last night and it seemed like so much. You must be getting crazy amounts there!

I've stalked the July boards. It's crazy that one of them has had the baby already. That means some of you might be ready to go in July already. Wild!

@delight: Aren't those labour videos awful? I felt sick after them and I am now going to block them out. I don't need the visuals. As for the DTap in Canada, my guess is that there hasn't been the pertussis outbreaks here like in the US (like Lawbee said)? I know they aren't worried about it in Manitoba. But I'd ask my doctor to be safe.

@lawbee11: Someone once told me that you can never have enough blankets. So my guess is that lots of people think that way and that's why everyone gets blankets. They're cute and they figure they are safe.

  27. chanzi

    cherry / 233 posts

@.twist.: Wow! I hope the flooding goes down soon.

@lawbee11: I returned a few different blankets! I actually wouldn't mind having them, but I was worried that the ones I was given would be cat hair magnets.

I had an appointment today and got to talk to my OB more about my low platlets--she thinks it just a minor pregnancy thing and they're not low enough to be problematic for bleeding at this point. They'll keep and eye on it and can give me a transfusion when I go into labor if they get really low by then. However! I'm already quite close to the point at which an anesthesiologist might refuse to give me an epidural, so I guess it's a good thing that I already wanted to avoid one if I could do if I could… It might not even be an option! Haha, even thinking I'd try to avoid it I did like having the choice in case I felt like I needed one…

I had my first baby shower today, and it was great! Baby Kennedy was spoiled, and I got some nice things too! My mom's friend made the cake, which turned out super cute! After my other shower on Monday night, I'll have a pretty good idea of what's left to buy - can't believe how quickly this is all coming!

I had my shower yesterday...it was SO hot and humid (for Michigan) so I was a big ole sweaty mess! I had a great time and got so much amazing stuff - I am feeling overwhelmingly blessed - I'll post some pictures separately. The best gift ever was that my sister announced (tactfully after the shower and everyone but my mom and other sister was left) that she is 14 weeks and due on Christmas day. It is her first and I am so excited we get to be pregnant together and go through a lot of this stage together! I love that our kids (and my other sisters son who is 2) will be so close in age!

As for us, we had our child birth class yesterday. There wasn't too much that I hadn't already read, but I think it was good for DH, and they brought in pictures of various labour positions and massage tools and stuff to try so that was kind of useful I guess.

We did a wishes for baby card that everyone filled out and I can't wait to read what everyone wrote. I will post some pictures from my phone.
