@AprilFool: yea, i'm still very early. but LO was such a crazy mover, i felt her constantly starting from around 16 weeks (and DH probably a week later). just bummed i won't have that experience this time around with the location of the placenta.

@pwnstar: exactly! she is my whole heart, and that's a great point about worrying about how DD's life will be impacted more than about the baby. i think it's time for us to start talking about names - i think it may help the bonding experience.

@Silva: my first used to do this constantly! it would happen every time i sat in a car and I always thought i was going to pee my pants. long trips were the worst!!!

So I had my anatomy ultrasound today and I think it went fine. Baby girl was moving so very much and I saw a heart beat, two arms and two legs. The head looked whole. I was told that baby girl is breach but that its absolutely totally normal since the baby is flipping all around all the time. I also saw the baby kick her leg on the screen and simultaneously felt it myself so now I know for sure that what I've been feeling lately are the baby's kicks. No pictures were printed out for me - they were put on a disc. Umm.. now what will I do with a disc?

The ultrasound wasn't done by my doctor - or a doctor. It was maybe some girl with an ultrasound certificate or something. She said she couldn't tell me anything, which I understand once I wrapped my head around the fact that this wasn't being done by my doctor. But I thought I was supposed to come out of there with all sorts of information and I left with only what I could surmise from what I saw with my own eyes. I asked "is there bright bowel syndrome" and the tech just looked at me with blank eyes. I asked "does the umbilical cord look right?" again, no response. So how does everyone else leave the anatomy scan with so much information? I feel like stomping my foot right now, but I'm actually really just so very relieved to see the baby moving around so much and having a good heart beat.

@agold: We had our anatomy scan done my by an ultrasound tech too, she also wouldn't tell us anything beyond boy or girl (I am sure for legal reasons). We had our 20 week appt a few days later, and thats when we got the full report. Basically the ultrasound tech takes images, her boss reviews them, then your doctor reviews them, then you get the full update. Promise you will get an update sooner or later though!

@Silva: I feel the same way, so much easier to love and connect with the LO in your belly the second time around, so well put!

@MrsBeluga: Thanks! I do have my appointment with my doctor in exactly 2 weeks. I'm just amazed that some people come out with great info! I told my husband that we would find out about the suspected placenta previa and he was super stoked about getting a go-ahead for sex! Poor guy has to wait two more weeks!

@agold: at the ultrasound center i go to, a tech does the ultrasound and then a doctor (not my doctor) reviews the pictures and comes in and gives me a brief report, then forwards all of the results to my doctor. but when it was bad news, they would come in and ask when i was seeing my doctor, and if not that day, they'd call my doctor on the spot to discuss how she wanted to handle. I'd sit there and wait while he had a long talk with my doctor, and then he'd come back and say "your doctor will call you in 20 minutes." So while it was helpful having a doctor on hand to give me the all clear, since it wasn't my doctor, he often refused to interpret anything remotely negative for me. so i'm not sure how useful it was to have him there. and when he did give me mixed news, it was often later disputed by my doctor, who was monitoring my care and knew more about my situation. so all it did was get me worked up!

of course, in my case, the issue was growth, so i just watched the top of the screen during all the measurements to see how far behind baby was measuring and already knew what to expect. towards the end, i just closed my eyes during the u/s and listened to DH's reactions to the measurements!

that said, the results will be forwarded to your doctor, and if there's any concern at all, I would bet she will get in touch with you before your next appt. you can always give her a call next week just to make sure things looked ok!

@agold: I can't believe you have to wait two weeks! That would drive me nuts! My doctor did mine in the office, and then at the high risk place the tech told us a little bit as she went and then the doc came in to confirm that everything looked good (and double checked a couple things)

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@Pirouette: Thanks for all that info. Interesting that you had a doctor come in and talk to you. I can see how that caused you to get worked up. I didn't even get measurements told to me and was too dumb to think on my own to look for them on the screen. I'm going to try to rest in blissful ignorance at this point!

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@Silva: neither can i! So okay. Now I'm going to call to see if I can get in sooner. Sounds like you had a good experience and its what I was sort of thinking would be the way that this all would go down.

@agold: That's bizarre she didn't comment on anything! At all three of my anatomy scans (with 3 different techs) they have commented like "oh, there's a three vessel umbilical cord, that's perfect" or "gorgeous cerebellum" and what have you. Very reassuring along the way - and then afterwards my midwife always comes in and says that things look great so far but that the radiologist will get back to us with a full report. I would be annoyed if they didn't mention things about the basics that are just visually obvious - whether they are there or not! Sorry you had a bad experience.

@agold: Thats frustrating! Our tech was really good and it was reviewed while we were there with a doctor.

I would call and see if your OB could even look at the results and let yo know everything is ok over the phone.

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@agold: not dumb at all! but we were there every week last time so we knew the drill! and knew what the target growth was to be able to stay pregnant a few more weeks. i certainly didn't know to look at my anatomy scan (when everything was normal). Definitely call her early next week and at least ask about the placenta if that was a concern going in.

  13. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@coopsmama: Oh, how I would have LOVED for the tech to say anything like that!!!! "Gorgeous cerebellum" would have been a dream. I'm trying to just be happy with the heart beat and an obviously bigger baby. And yes, I asked about the three vessel cord!! (I didn't say it quite as precise as that because I forget the word "vessel"). It was like so tough for her to confirm that the three things necessary in the cord were present but I did get her to tell me that. Ugh.

@agold: That is strange to not get any information day of! My US was done by a tech, who sort of talked about what she was looking at but didn't evaluate (like, "there's the heart, there's xyz artery" but not anything about whether they were normal). But afterward a doctor came in who was not my normal doctor, and she basically just said, "Everything looks good -- he weighs about 13 oz." So not a lot of detail, but we didn't really ask follow up questions, just kind of took "looks good" as enough info. It would have driven me crazy if I got nothing evaluative, though!

  15. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@MrsSCB: I'm clearing going crazy! I called my doctor's office and they said that they will receive the ultrasound results in about 2 business days and then if anything looks bad, the doctor will call me immediately. So whatevs. I'm not going to stress over it anymore. I really just wanted a heart beat. So moving baby, two arms and two legs and a head that looked whole is really so great for me.

This week has been crazy at work, I feel like I've missed a lot! Re: work -- I'm the digital news editor for a large medical center, and I do a bit of everything. Manage a couple writers and our company website, write for and help edit our monthly magazine, various PR-related things. I love my job!

@pwnstar: @Silva: my guy is breech as well (according to the US). I forgot to ask my doctor, does this have any bearing on what his position might be later? I imagine there's still plenty of time and room for him to move (and he's moving a lot!) but just wondering. And I had my first calf Charley horse last night -- omg, ouch! I jumped out of bed and tried to walk and it went away, but not cool.

I've also been noticing that my left ankle is swelling and getting achey while the right one isn't. I sprained it many years ago, but it's been a bit off since then. I wonder if the relaxin is messing with the damaged ligaments? That was also the leg I had the Charley horse in. Pregnancy is weird.

@agold: what a sweet profile And I feel similar to you regarding connecting with the baby. I'm so happy and excited, but it's hard to imagine what it'll really be LIKE, you know? Like the day to day caring for my own baby. I've cared for a lot of other people's babies, but I know it's going to be so different. I just can't quite picture it.

  18. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@MrsSCB: it's unrelated, they are so small right now that they will just keep flipping. I think my daughter was usually head up until I was about 30 weeks. At that point, or even a little later, their heads get heavier and they can't move as much so they usually flip and settle into a more consistent position.

  19. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@Silva: ok good! Of course this was right after we were visiting dh's fanily and his cousin told some horror story about his son being breech (why do people do that?!) When the tech mentioned it, my husband was like, "uh oh!"

  20. Silva

@MrsSCB: I remember being nervous about it last time, too! People love to tell pregnant women horror stories!

  21. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@MrsSCB: Thank you!! And sorry to hear about your crazy work week and your swollen ankle. And gees! What kind of horror story about a breech baby? Doesn't breech just mean baby is feet first so you have to have a c-section?

  22. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@Silva: @agold: a nurse at my very first appointment told me, "people like to tell pregnant women all kinds of crazy stories. Don't listen to them, some people just like drama." Good advice, ha. This one was just waaaay too much detail about his wife's labor and delivery. TMI, man. 😳

Thinking of this for a going home outfit http://www.burtsbeesbaby.com/Tree-Coverall-Hat-Set/LY23514-SBL-3M,en_US,pd.html?start=2&cgid=Coveralls

But does long-sleeved/footed make sense? I know it'll be hot outside, but it's not like we'll actually be spending time outside. We typically keep our apartment pretty cool. I guess it's 100 percent cotton, so relatively lightweight. Also newborn size or 0-3 months? I'm such a noob...

  24. T.H.O.U.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

@MrsSCB: I think it makes sense! Hospitals are chilly, your husband can have the car cooled off and then you'll go inside!

Also for the coming home outfits I would say definitely NB. Even my 9lb kids needed NB for that first week or so.

@MrsSCB: During my first pregnancy, I swelled a lot (and will leave it at that--no horror stories!). My left ankle/leg always swelled faster than my right, although they evened out at some point in the early afternoon. I'm not really sure why . . . although I did have a really nasty sprain to my left in my late 20's. Relaxin is crazy stuff, yo. But then again, pretty much everything with pregnancy is totally a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride kind of experience!

    Cute outfit! Definitely NB.

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@pwnstar: "a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" - haha so so true!

had a quick checkup this morning- all looks good. baby was moving around like crazy - he's taking after his big sis in that way so far, even though i can't feel it as much. I did feel some light little love taps on my way to the appt though, which made me smile second anatomy scan next tues and then i think we'll set my tentative schedule for future ultrasounds.

  27. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@T.H.O.U.: @pwnstar: Newborn it is! The little newborn outfits look so tiny -- my friend sent us a onesie and my husband looked at it and said, "he's really going to fit in that?!"

@pwnstar: Lol wild ride is right! I learned this weekend that I really need to get up and walk more while at work, too. Pretty much all swelling went away while I was much more active over the weekend.

  28. pwnstar

    pear / 1718 posts

@MrsSCB: I am finding that I generally feel much better when I get some kind of activity in! (I am also hoping it helps with swelling too!) I had a pretty tough (body) weekend, but I think it wouldn't have been as bad if I had moved more (and also maybe eaten just a little less junk!) So. Lesson learned.

@OldpuebloJenn: @T.H.O.U.: How were your appointments today?

@Pirouette: So great to hear you had a good appointment. And its awesome that you get so many ultrasounds!

@MrsSCB: I have to walk around frequently, too. Even before I was pregnant, I would find sometimes that when I sat at my desk for like 8 hours straight, my legs would be really swollen. It always makes me nervous. And I've found my legs to be swollen a few different times during this pregnancy but thankfully the swelling goes down after a bit.

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@T.H.O.U.: Bummer. I hope you can reschedule it quickly. Was it an anatomy scan, a regular ultrasound or just a doc appt w/ doppler? (Although.. even just a doppler is so important to me at this point.)

  34. T.H.O.U.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

@agold: It was a follow up from our A/S. The MFM already told us everything looks good, but it would be nice to check via doppler on the baby. Its just an appointment with the nurse practitioner so not many questions to be answered. Oops. I mostly worried that I hope they dont charge me for this appointment.

  35. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@agold: haha awesome and not awesome! the ultrasounds are great because I get to see baby so much, but at the same time, i'm really hoping they tell me that i'm not really at risk and they don't need to see me as much as they originally said they would. I mean, if there's any issue with his growth, obviously I want to know, but I really wouldn't mind a nice normal pregnancy yielding a nice normal sized baby!!

  36. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@T.H.O.U.: Ugh. I'd hate to be charged too!!!

@Pirouette: Doh! I forgot what was going on. Someone on here has multiple routine ultrasounds just as a general OB practice so I got confused. It is so nice to see the baby as often as you can but I will also be hoping for just a nice normal size baby for you! At least everything looked good today!

@agold: thanks for asking! It was good. I kept thinking of you, cause our tech was super chatty and I felt bad you didn't get that.
Baby hid it's sex from us and the tech (which is fine by me!), and I was doing acrobatics to get it to move so we could get pics of all the necessary parts. I'm still waiting a call back from the doctor to see if we need to go back, they never got a good profile shot, and the tech was uncertain as to if it was necessary. We only got two pics today, a foot and a hand, because baby was hiding and all rolled up. I praise the tech for getting all she needed cause this kiddo wasn't giving it up. My daughter was yelling at my belly "roll over baby"!

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@agold: haha oh yea that's me too! I thought you meant regarding my future ultrasound schedule. but yea, my ob does do regular u/s - super quick ones. my appt today start to finish was 15 minutes, and that included my tons of questions on what to do if i catch my daughter and husband's horrible bouts of coxsackie she doesn't use a doppler - she instead measures the h/b by ultrasound at each appt.

  39. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@OldpuebloJenn: haha that's adorable that your daughter came! it sounds like she was really into it I am kinda bummed that it would be a total pain to bring my daughter to one of my appts, because i'd love to see her reaction!

So my sister freaked me out explaining that I needed "safe places" to put the new baby in that the toddler wouldn't be able to access (pack and play, etc.) She mentioned that the other day she went to the bathroom, left her toddler in her play room and her infant on a floor mat, and when she came back the toddler was full on holding the infant. Another time she explained that the toddler was able to move the infant that was strapped to her bouncer across the room so she could play with her better. My sister said she was gone for 60 seconds each time. This had not even occurred to me, I just assumed our toddler would ignore the baby. I guess this means we are adding a pack and play to our list of purchases... Any other recommendations besides taking the baby with you to every bathroom trip?
