@AprilFool: It is so fascinating what is considered standard and how it varies country to country and practice to practice! I wasn't saying that I thought you shouldn't have it btw - I hope my comment didn't come across that way. I was just sharing my own experience. This is my third and I've yet to experience the actual test so I can't commiserate much!!

I'm so glad you made it through and I agree - get some chocolate.

@coopsmama: I screen shot your explanation of your blood test and am going to bring it up to my midwives. I failed the 1 hour last time, and had to do the three hour and they wrecked me! @AprilFool: glad you made it through and hope you get good results soon!

@AprilFool: I hope you get great results.

It's standard to do a 2-hr test at my practice. Can't believe they already gave me the paperwork for it and said I could go from 24-28w. Um. I think I'll wait until closer to 28

@AprilFool: If by organized you mean I hung the clothes up, thanks . I should probably organize it a little more, or at least group the sleepers and the onesies separately. And there's stuff hanging that still needs to get washed, but I put it away so it wasn't hanging around.

Talking about storage: What is everyone planning?

    - In our nursery we have a changing table with 2 shelves below. We will probably keep a few bins on those shelves with blankets, burp cloths (babies spit up often when you lay them down for a change), PJs and socks.
    - Then we have a taller dresser with 5 drawers where we keep the things like onesies and pants/shorts. The bottom drawer is for misc. stuff like swim suits and hats. I could probably consolidate this down to just 3 drawers but I have the space so I'm not worried.
    - Then in the closet we try to only really hang the nicer outfits (dresses or pieces we want to keep together). I also hang jackets and anything that is in the next size or for the next season (this helps me remember/see what I have so I dont over buy!)

  12. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@T.H.O.U.: since LO is moving into a big girl room, we're not planning on changing anything in the nursery. the changing table is a dresser, 2 smaller drawers on top (fit diapers, wipes, etc.) and then one drawer for bottoms (and onesies - LO doesn't wear them but for baby, they will fit in the same drawer as the bottoms) and one drawer for miscellaneous. then in the closet i hang all shirts and dresses (he won't have dresses, so i'll just hang shirts i guess!) the closet has built in shelves where i put pjs and things like bathing suits and shoes. then socks are in a little hanging bin off the crib/bed.

sounds scattered when i type it out, but it's really not!

  13. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

First we have to measure the room to see if what I want to get will fit!

    -crib
    -8-cube kallax from IKEA
-wide dresser to act as changing table from IKEA
    -hang the nicer clothing items
-possibly a large tote or basket for stuffed animals

Good idea about hanging future items, too, so we can see what we have. I've almost missed using some items in the current size bc they were tucked away in bags!

  14. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

oh i hang the next size (or for pants, put them on one side of the drawer). but past the next size, I put on the built-in shelves in the closet that are on the opposite side of the opening (so out of the way, but still easily accessible).

  15. T.H.O.U.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

Another tip for FTM, have a bin/bucket/spot for clothes that your kid outgrows. Sizes are so hard to tell, and if you try something on that doesn't fit, its nice to have a spot where you can throw all the outgrown stuff and then pack it up later.

@T.H.O.U.: Closet cubes sound great! I really like wicker-looking baskets that I have seen, too, to possibly put in the closet. I decided this morning that baby girl will only get 2/3 of the closet. The other 1/3 will have to remain storage.

@pregnantbee: Do you fold up any clothes and put them in drawers?

    @T.H.O.U.: "Double Rescheduled f/u"

    For storage, I will have

    - changing table that is like a wide nightstand with a few drawers under it. I assume I will at least have some diapers and functional clothes in there.

    - closet is length of the wall and baby girl will get 2/3. In the middle is a tall dresser with five wide drawers. Baby girl will get those. Fun pretty stuff on top of the dresser.

    - she has her own bathroom and luckily the vanity cabinets are empty already. Phew!

    - I plan to get a wicker hamper that looks like an elephant! Maybe some other little baskets in the closet or wherever.

    I'm hoping that is enough!

  17. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

The baby will be in our room for the first year- we have a first floor master and I'm not moving it upstairs until he/she sleeps through the night (plus, the upstairs room isn't finished- I think we are adding a skylight and it needs to be at least repainted but really needs new dry wall. Fun old house.).
So, storage is limited in our room. We do have a good sized closet in the upstairs room where I'm keeping all the clothing in bigger sizes for now. But the baby will have a dresser and maybe some under-crib storage containers. Oh, and a shelf above the changing table (dresser top) for diaper changing stuff.
Somehow this worked pretty well for us with our daughter, and we have a lot more room/space now (we were in a tiny apartment with her until she was two).

  18. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@agold: Yup, we fold the clothes in the drawers. For the dresser that's the changing table, we'll reserve the top drawer for supplies like diapers, wipes, creams, thermometer, gas drops, nosefrida, etc. Then a drawer or part of one for shirts/onesies, another for pants/shorts, another for blankets, burp cloths, etc. The length of dresser and number of drawers will totally depend on whether we can fit it. For our son, we got a dresser that was just the length of the changing pad on top. That worked ok except that there was no place to put a dirty diaper or change of clothes on top during a change. If we double that length, it would be much more practical. That would also give us double the storage.

  19. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@agold: Oh! We have the wicker hamper elephant! We've ended up using it to store stuffed animals in it because the lining isn't waterproof and so much of baby's stuff had spit up on it or pee accidents.

  20. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@pregnantbee: I thought about that re: the length of the changing table. I still just got one that is only the length of the actual changer. I know I'm going to run in to that problem but I couldn't find a larger one I liked that I could afford! I'm going to have to make do.

  21. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@pregnantbee: Oh thanks for letting me know about that [the elephant hamper]. Did you get the one from amazon? Its so cute. But gross about pee and poo clothes. Makes sense though. Is it not practical to wash those types of clothes right away? I really can't imagine putting pee/poo clothes in a hamper to sit. But then again, there's so much about babies that I can't imagine and that I know I'm going to have to adjust to. Is having pee/poo clothes in a hamper one of those things?

  22. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@agold: Yeah, totally didn't think about the practicality of the length of the dresser the first time around. We ended up putting the diaper genie on the floor next to it, and if we were careful, we could balance the dirty diaper on it while putting on a new diaper from the top drawer.

We would wash out the pee/pooped clothes right away, rather than let them sit in a hamper. Air dried them until we were ready to do a full load. We ended up finding it was just easier to bring the baby's clothes into our room and put them into the main laundry basket, as we were doing laundry once a day for awhile anyway. Didn't make sense to put them in his room, then move them every day into ours. If you do want to use the elephant hamper as laundry hamper, I'd consider getting 1 or 2 reusable large waterproof diaper bags or maybe disposable plastic bags for the inside so that the wet of any baby clothes doesn't soak through the canvas fabric into the wicker.

Here's what I'd suggest (I have no idea how you'd secure it to the inside of the elephant, though):

Here's the elephant hamper we got (honestly can't remember which size, though) Also, the knob on the lid broke, so now ours is tied on with cable ties:

@pregnantbee: Yes, I love that one! And it sounds like I'm going to have to be creative and flexible with the changing situation!

People with two stories and an upstairs nursery - is it impractical to think I can change diapers solely upstairs on the changing table? Or will I/do you find it necessary to change diapers downstairs also?

  24. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@agold: We don't have 2 stories, but from what I understand, plan to have a 2nd changing area downstairs. Can just be on the floor on a pad. At 14+ diapers a day in the beginning, you won't want to walk up and down the stairs every time for a change.

  25. T.H.O.U.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

@Silva: Yes I probably need to think about what we will have for storage in our room. That arrangement is what we have in the "nursery" but thats going to stay DS's for a while. I guess I need to go in and split up the drawers and hanging space.

@agold: We have a shelf in the closet at normal hanging shelf height. Since we have 8 ft ceilings that still left a good 3ft above that shelf. We split the difference and actually added a second shelf above that (same just cheap wire shelf). From the door frame of the closet you can barely see it. Its not the easiest to get things in and out of (its high and you have to maneuver up around the door frame of the closet) but its great for things like storage, extra presents, etc.

  26. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@T.H.O.U.: A second shelf sounds perfect! I'm going to take a look at my closet situation and see if that would work for me.

I read somewhere that after 20 weeks, 1 pound a week is expected. Is that true and was second+ time mamas have experienced? I really don't think I want to gain an additional 20 pounds since I started off a tad on the heavy side.

  27. Umberto

    grape / 75 posts

@agold: I hope not!! I'm overweight and the thought of 1lb a week makes me want to cry!

I'm amazed (and jealous) of how organised everyone sounds already! I can't wait to see some pics of baby rooms as they come together. Our house is tiny so I'm really hoping I can squeeze everything into a wardrobe, a small desk we're repurposing into a change table, and a few baskets. I can dream, right?
AFM, I feel like everything's happening now. Had a big talk with the OB re my high BP. She'd like me delivered at 38-39 weeks because the last couple weeks are too risky that it will spike up crazy high and all the complications that come with that. I'm bummed I probably won't labour at home but healthy baby and mum are most important, I know. Feels much more real now that we're talking about the end already. I haven't even told work yet, whoops! Better get on to that
Plus DH and I are shopping for another car, my old 2-door Hyundai buzz box just isn't going to cut it anymore!

@Umberto: sorry about the high BP. with an induction at least you know exactly when it will all happen. There is a part of that that really appeals to the planner in me! What kind of car are you getting?
We drive our cars into the ground, and one of them (a Toyota matrix- great car!) is done in June (it won't pass inspection another year due to rust- our winters are hard on cars). We are planning to buy a sienna, probably a couple years old. I think we will likely do that in July and I can't wait! Never thought I'd be excited about a minivan!

@agold: I have been meaning to get out my journal from my first pregnancy- I kept track of that stuff! This time....not so much. I don't even know what I weigh anymore. But I think that sounds about right....

  31. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@agold: honestly, it's just a guideline, and every single pregnancy is different! You might gain more or less at different times, but i think some of how much you gain is outside your control, assuming you're not using pregnancy as an excuse to eat like crap or starving yourself or something! Just remember it's all temporary

  32. Umberto

    grape / 75 posts

@Silva: I think getting excited about family cars is a sign of being a grown up, right?? You go from parties and drinking to minivans and visits to the hardware store
I had to google both of those cars you mentioned to figure out what they are! Haha damn different names here in Aus! I'd love an SUV of some sort but DH already has a decked out Navara for towing the boat, 4wd-ing, etc, and we're trying to save money where possible, so probably a small-med hatch of some sort like a Corolla or Impreza. My Hyundai is still my first car from when I got my license, I'll miss the old girl!

  33. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Umberto: I can also vouch for the Corolla! We just retired one that was 12 years old and replaced it with a 2012. Great car and we had no issues with the car seat. We have a maxi cosi pria and when it was rear facing it was a bit tight behind the drivers seat, but ultimately there was enough room for my 5' 10" husband to drive it.

@Silva: Thanks, that's handy to know because I'm actually 5'10 too, and we're looking at 2012/2013 models!

@agold: That's about what I put on last time in the last 20 weeks. Hoping to put a lot less on this time. Although I weighed myself this morning and in the last two weeks have put on the same as the entire pregnancy so far.

@AprilFool: Congrats on the glucose test!!

FWIW I'm a bit of a data hoarder, so I have been using the Ovia Pregnancy app to track my weight, activity level, sleep and general notes. I love it. It runs trends on those data points for me! Another 20 lbs sounds pretty scary to me though. My biggest struggle lately has been stairs. One flight and I have to slow WAAAAAYY down. Also noticed that I hold my breath to tie my shoes now. How is everyone else doing?

    @AprilFool: Congratulations on passing!

    @agold: With baby #1 - From week 13 - 40 I gained 33 lbs (I didn't gain in the first tri).

    - From weeks 13 - 20 I gained 12lbs
    - From week 20-30 I gained 16lbs
    - From week 30-40 I gained another four or five pounds.

With baby #2 - Similarly I gained mostly between weeks 14 and 40 for a total weight gain of 32 lbs
    - From week 14-25 I gained 16 lbs
    - From week 25-35 I gained 12 lbs
    - From week 35-40 I gained about another 4-5 lbs.

    pear / 1718 posts

@agold: With weight gain, your options are: (1) to make good choices most of the time and accept that there are some things outside of your control; or (2) to drive yourself crazy about something which really and truly you have little control over. I'm sure you can guess which option I went with the first time . . . and yeah, it added a ton of stress and pressure (just myself putting pressure on myself because I didn't look like I thought I was *supposed* to), and at times it really took away from being able to enjoy the pregnancy. I'm not saying to just throw your hands up, but, be careful with setting expectations for yourself. As a caveat I will add I gained a lot--a lot!!!--of weight. BUT. It all came off. All of my pre-pg clothes fit again (even my *skinny* jeans), and for some unknown reason, I didn't get a single stretch mark. So. It's not all bad, even when you're not where you expected to be numbers wise.

Eta: I was small when I got pregnant (almost 5'8" and a 2/4 . . . and I worked very hard to stay in shape pre-pregnancy), so the weight gain was really hard for me emotionally. So I get it. I really do. But it is temporary. And it will come off. Don't let it steal any of your joy!

  39. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@agold: So I didn't ever gain all that much weight. I lost a ton in the beginning - about 20 pounds. Then it slowly crept up to where I was about 5 pounds below where I started. I was on the GD diet though.

I belive your body will do what it's going to do. But also to not let pregnancy give you an excuse to go crazy with sugar. If you eat reasonably and only indulge when you're really craving stuff, you should be fine. Remember, baby's got another 6-7 pounds to gain probably before you're done. So that with fluid gets you close to another 10 pounds and that all goes away right after birth.

  40. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@pwnstar: thanks, your story make me feel better I've definitely started to gain more recently, and it's hard to not stress. I feel bad about it, like I'm being really vain, but I lost 10 pounds several months before getting pregnant and I was really proud of that. Seeing the scale go back up and my clothes get tighter again is tough even though it's for an amazing cause. I'm glad to know you were able to get back to yourself, because it IS so out of our control in a lot of ways!

As a side note, I'm having an emotional day because I just dropped my sweet kitty at the vet to get some teeth pulled I know he's in good hands but the general anesthesia makes me SO nervous.
