@Pirouette: mine was adult onset, and my brother developed symptoms at almost the same time. Crazy. I guess there are some theories about viral exposure triggering the onset of it when you are genetically predisposed? We've talked about Doing some genetic screening for my daughter, but haven't decided yet. We still wouldn't restrict her diet until she developed symptoms anyway, and given the family history I suspect she'd be tested quickly anyway.

@Silva: I found out I had celiac while I was pregnant with my first. Apparently my body didn't know what to do so it triggered the disease. My oldest son is celiac with EoE complications. My youngest has the same genes and is gluten free by default because we all eat gluten free for myself and my oldest. Plus my youngest already has enough feeding issues without complicating things.

@MrsRcCar: it's funny, the initial theory was that pregnancy had changed my immune system too....but then my brother tested positive. And the timing of the development/course of our symptoms was nearly identical. So the viral Theory makes some sense. But obviously a genetic component. My daughter is growing fine and has no health issues, so Her doctor has recommended not restricting her diet. The gene might get turned on, it might not.
Sounds like your family has some complications with it all. I can't imagine helping little kids navigate this diet and the sensitivity!

@Silva: my diagnosis was triggered by a bad bout of food poisoning, so not all that different from a viral infection. But I had symptoms my entire childhood (I was in and out of a GI's office my whole childhood but no one ever suspected celiac until I came in with the same symptoms at 23!) We tested lo early because she's so small we were worried about anything that would further stunt her growth.

@MrsRcCar: yea I think if lo had tested positive, we would have pretty much kept a gf household. It's not that hard if everyone is doing it!

  5. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Pirouette: I definitely didn't have it before I had my daughter. But I had been having IBS symptoms on and off for several years prior. I'd tested negative for it on a couple occasions in the past. So weird.

@Silva: oh wow, that's crazy! And has your ibs been better since then as well?

    grapefruit / 4712 posts

@Silva: @Pirouette: honestly we have been eating this way for about 3 years. It's not bad. My boys don't understand yet that they are restricted. My oldest will be 4 in October and my youngest just turned 2 this past Feb. My family struggles way harder then we do. I love to cook so I have spent the last three years tweaking my favorite recipes. DH isn't big into gluten free but at home he eats and prepares gluten free, when we go out or when he is at school/work I don't care what he eats. He does have other food restrictions. We are hard party guests. 😳

  8. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@MrsRcCar: haha yes parties are the hardest. I have been gf so long I don't find it difficult, and I think it would be pretty easy for me to transition our house to fully gf, but I have to say it's nice that lo can eat whatever she wants when we go out and at parties and that I don't have to watch her like a hawk!

  9. MrsRcCar

    grapefruit / 4712 posts

@Pirouette: My extended family and my In laws cook gluten free for us (seperate cooking utensils, pans, what have you) when we visit. They always hate that I bring food everywhere. I never expected it but it's nice not to worry. Parties are so easy for us that way. Plus my friends around here (local to me) usually just serve real whole foods so I don't generally stress about food and parties. 😊

I have been keeps up with you guys. Can't wait (ok well I can because everyone needs to come when they are healthy) to meet all the babies.

    @Silva: that's awesome!

@MrsRcCar: yea, our families have been amazing at accommodating me, even though I'm the only celiac in the family. I'm so happy that you will be just a few short months behind us so we still get to all go through it together

Goodness, I'm so behind on here! It moves so fast! Bit of a lull here so nothing new but we're excited to see the baby again on Wednesday for our follow up anatomy scan

Oh! Lol, baby is definately DH's kid! Moves around like crazy after eating Taco Bell and I only felt him/her tonight when he was playing his video games (fighting noises)! BUT, baby won't let DH feel any movement yet, always hides when he feels my stomach!

@MrsRcCar: it's so great to see you on here! I'm so happy that you are not far behind us and we can all share the journey

  13. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@mrschickpea: haha that's hilarious! i remember getting such a kick (no pun intended) out of the things that seemed to trigger lo's movement - it was like every time DH walked in the room, as if she was responding to his voice. and she loved classical music - a future ballerina obviously! This movement isn't consistent enough yet so no real patterns, although he does seem to like it when i ride the train to work in the morning - coincidence that that's when i drink my coffee?

    pomelo / 5257 posts

Been feeling a lot more movement lately -- it's so much fun! DH has felt it a little bit as well, despite the fact that he seems to stop moving as soon as I say, "Hey, feel this!" haha. Although it's still sporadic, so of course now I've gone from, "I haven't felt him move yet, is everything ok?" to "He was moving a lot earlier, but not at all now, is everything ok?"

Going on a much-needed vacation next weekend. What are your thoughts or plans for bathing suits? Can't decide if I should just wear my current bathing suits (if they fit...) and let the bump hang free? Or cover it with a new one-piece or tankini? I like the idea of not buying a new suit just yet, but I don't know if I'm brave enough to wear a bikini!

  15. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@MrsSCB: i plan to wear bikinis again this summer. BUT, I would try them on before you go - i had to buy new tops last time because my boobs got huge! i've never been a tankini person.

  16. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@MrsSCB: I would just wear your current bathing suit. There are so many things we need to buy for this baby and ourselves that if you can manage to wear what you have, then why buy a new one? And I highly doubt you look hideous in your bikini. Who cares if your belly hangs out?

  17. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@Pirouette: Yes, I definitely need to try on, because I think I could have the same problem. My boobs have gotten huge. Might need a new top at the very least.. I think I would be more comfortable in a bikini, physically at least. Just have to get used to the bump being out there, haha. At least I wouldn't have to worry about sucking anything in!

  18. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@agold: seriously, I've been buying so much baby and maternity clothing that I'd love to be able to save wherever I can. I'm sure people on the beach in San Diego have seen weirder things than a pale pregnant belly. It's funny because I think about how people on beaches in other countries are out there topless or in thongs without a care in the world. I'm sure they'd think, "Why is this even a question?"

  19. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@MrsSCB: haha yea, it's weird getting used to the belly hanging out in public! i bought a bikini from VS last time because they do cup sizes. it worked great for pregnancy and nursing.

Random aside, I showed my LO the bump for the first time yesterday and she was blown away - she was like "wow, my baby brother is really in there!" then she kissed my belly and said to him "I love you! I'm going to see you in a few weeks" it was super cute (more than a few weeks there though, kiddo, sorry!)

@Pirouette: yes, I love VS swimsuits! And your daughter's reaction is so sweet! I bet she'll be an amazing big sister

@MrsSCB: she will, i think! she'll just have to get used to not being quite as spoiled

@agold: @Pirouette: @MrsSCB: I wore my regular bikinis on my babymoon with DD, and would do it again in a heartbeat this time too! And I love that with VS suits you can do a cute mix-and-match set (working with bottoms you already have, and getting just a new top to accommodate the boobs!) without spending a ton (a larger top also comes in handy for post-p too!).

@Pirouette: That's so sweet! I love when LO puts her hands on/kisses my belly and says something to her baby brother. Sometimes she even looks down my shirt toward my belly and asks "do you still have a baby in there?"

I think I would go ahead and invest in a tankini if you think your going to get one. Why not get more use out of it!

@MrsSCB: Hooray for vacation. I love San Diego I was just on vacation and needed to wear a bathing suit. I just wore one of my non-maternity tankinis....and let the bottom of the bump hang out. haha! Just didn't care. Last time, I wore a bikini. Best part is not having to suck in or worry about flab. Own the bump! It's very liberating.

PS this totally reminds me we leave Wednesday for vacation (3 pool days and 2 theme park days) and I will need a suit! Hopefully I can find and dig out something because I dont have time to shop.

@pwnstar: haha! that's so sweet we've been trying not to talk up the baby too much since i don't want her to feel like it's going to take over her life and it's still so far away. but we were at a baby shower this weekend for someone due in June and seeing someone that far along was crazy for her! she came home and showed her DH her belly and was like "it's smaller because there's no baby in there"

@MrsSCB: If I ever am not sure if I look good in something, my husband tells me, "well you aren't trying to make new friends tonight." Ha! So I try to think that basically all the time and it helps me with a "f*ck it" attitude about how I look.

Speaking of babymoons and vacations... what is the latest you girls would take a babymoon to a beach that is a 5-hour flight away???? Please give your opinion! This is a hot topic in my house right now.

  28. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@agold: I'm doing a 5 hour drive to vacation in July. I think I will be 35 weeks along or so. I'm slightly nervous about it, but I'm sure it will be fine. My doctors don't recommend any far away travel after 36 weeks. I don't know how late I'd fly. I hate flying normally, and avoid it at all costs.

@Silva: Thanks. I don't mind flying. We'd be going to Maui. Its possible to go earlier, but my parents and my husband's best golf buddy will be out there when DH wants to go. I'm hesitant for a couple of reasons. Alternative to Maui would be east coast (also 5 hour flight) or Scottsdale (5 hour drive). Or nothing! Ha! Seriously considering nothing at this point. Still have to have an okay-to-travel from my OB who I will be seeing on the 14th.

Yay! A topic of conversation I have something to add!! We plan on going away to a nice hotel 2ish hours away April 22-24. 2 nights away. This will be the first time both of us will be away from the boys over night. I am so excited to get some alone relaxing time with the husband.

I just got a bathing suit for this trip. We will just be using the pool at the hotel but I hope I'm still brave enough to wear it in the summer. It's maternity black high waisted bottoms and just a regular bikini top from target. They have d/dd size in some of the bathing suit tops that worked really well for me. This will be my third time pregnant in the summer but I never got bottoms before so I'm excited to have something fit. If all else fails I have my old (still very new because I didn't wear it much) tankini too from my last pregnancies.

Here's the stock photos of the new one!

@agold: I think you're not supposed to fly after 27 or 28 weeks? Or maybe that's an airline restriction, IDK. I'd ask your OB and check the rules for the carrier you want to fly with. What week are you thinking of going?

  32. pwnstar

    pear / 1718 posts

@agold: It is pretty much unrestricted during the first and second tri, but for the third tri it varies by airline; some airlines require that you have an "okay to fly" letter from your OB, while others require nothing at all. My doc said absolutely not after 36 weeks (and that included the return flight, not just the flight out). I had LO at 38 weeks last time, so I personally wouldn't fly anywhere after, say, 32 weeks, unless there was an emergency or something like that.

  33. T.H.O.U.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

@ShootingStar: I have never heard restrictions that early. I think Cruise lines are that early but airlines let you go much later than that. I flew last time to Chicago around Memorial day (so 28 weeks?). That was a great trip.

ETA - I'm actually contemplating a work trip for 32w3d this time around. But for my first two kids I had to be induced so I really think it would be a fluke thing for me to go into labor that early.

  34. T.H.O.U.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

@pwnstar: Yes I flew with a letter just in case. You can also ask your OB to print off your records for you to travel with. Just in case you did go into labor or needed to be seen while you were away.

  35. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@ShootingStar: I'd be 32/33 weeks. I know my OB only recommends up travel only up to something like 28 weeks. I will see her on Thursday and check. But even if that's all she recommends, I think I can still go if I wanted to. But I'm starting to lean towards "no".

@pwnstar: There isn't a restriction on the airline we would be flying with. As for emergency deliveries, I do worry about that, too. But I also worry about it starting now, even. Since I'm 21 weeks, baby would have a good fighting chance of surviving if proper medical facilities are available. I'm pretty positive Maui doesn't have those preemie capabilities.

@T.H.O.U.: How was Chicago at 28 weeks? Have you ever been before? How long was your flight?

    @Aandmklover: Cute bathing suit!!!

  36. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@T.H.O.U.: So I had to look it up, lol. ACOG says the best time fair air travel is 14-28 weeks, and not to do so after 32. I found some airlines want a doctor's note if you're traveling between 28 and 32 weeks and after that they won't allow you to fly.

I probably wouldn't plan a trip after 29 weeks, just to be safe. And last pregnancy I started feeling the physical limitations right at 32 weeks. After that it got really tough. I'm currently debating whether I want to attend my high school reunion, which is 3 hours away and will happen when I'm 35 weeks.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

@agold: Chicago was great. We have family up there so we went to visit. I did a day trip in the city (walking around) and I think clocked almost 10 miles of walking but honestly felt pretty great.

  38. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

I am planning on going to chicago (2.5 hour flight) at 29 weeks, and my doc said it was ok already. It is a large city with good hospitals so I'm not concerned. I probably would have said no any later than that, just because of the hassle!

  39. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@Pirouette: I'll be a little later than that. And I'm not sure if Maui has hospitals to accommodate preemie babies.

  40. Pirouette

@agold: i think it's a very personal decision! I honestly am not worried about preterm labor, i hadnt even started dilating when i had my c section with my first. But my 3rd tri was very very stressful and I'd be worried about that happening again and travel adding more stress rather than being relaxing for me. At 29 weeks with my first, i felt fantastic and hadnt been diagnosed with iugr so it was stress free for me. Plus it's for a wedding i dont want to miss! I also always book with amex so no cost to cancel.
