@Pirouette: Please remind me, how old is your first? Mine is 3.5, and this fancy genetic testing was juuuust coming out and wasn't an option at all.

@pwnstar: Exciting, congrats on a good apppointment!

@Pirouette: seriously, and I'm totally jealous! What's with this having to wait until the anatomy scan thing?

@LCTBQE: sorry you are sick my toddler and I both have a bad cold right now. It's rough.

@pregnantbee: she's only 2! I'm guessing these tests were mostly limited to high risk then though, and I was only 32 then. even now, my doc said if i didn't want the panorama test done, I didn't have to have it, since she's requiring the NT scan anyway and i won't quite be 35 when I deliver, but she very highly recommended it, which was all my husband needed to hear.

@MrsSCB: I know, so old fashioned, right?! although I will say, there was something pretty awesome about finding out the sex at the u/s while looking at baby

@Pirouette: I had blood taken for a test yesterday. I was called "recombine" but I think its sort of the same thing as the panorama. I also had blood taken for a chromosome-type test that is offered by the state of california. I really couldn't quite tell what the difference was between the two but my doctor said the "recombine" tests for additional things that the state test doesn't check for. The "recombine" will also tell the gender. I think the appointment I have on February 18th is one during which we will go over the results of these tests. Its really all so weird, especially since I didn't initially plan to get any tests.

@Pirouette: @pregnantbee: Mine was born May 2013, and I got MaterniT21 when I was pregnant with her! But it was definitely new at the time (I think had been approved by the FDA 6 months before). I felt so lucky to have had the option.

@agold: Oh, I'm in CA, too. Northern. What part are you in?

  8. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@JoJoGirl: Cool! My currently pregnant coworker (due in April) told me about the existence of these tests. I had no idea before that!

@Pirouette: That does sound exciting, I'm really looking forward to that!

I'm using the Ovia app and (if you haven't used it yourself!) it sends you a baby development fact every day. Well, today's is "your baby is already building up the waste that will help make up its first poop." Yay! possibly a fact I did not really need to know...lol!

  10. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@pregnantbee: Yeah, it also depends on your age, of course I was 35 with my first so I had the chance to get it!

  11. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@MrsSCB: Haha. I find it fascinating my baby already has his/her reproductive organs! Like, the world's SMALLEST little testes may be growing inside me NUTSO!

  12. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@JoJoGirl: hahaha yeah, my husband said, "So you might have a teeeeeny tiny penis growing inside of you!" I was like, "that's a nice way of thinking about it, thank you."

Oh and side note, I did the baking soda gender "test" for the hell of it, and it did say boy....Not that it actually has any merit, ha. But it'll be fun to compare when we actually know.

@JoJoGirl: AMA over here. Barely under for #1.

@MrsSCB: Haha, I said that to one of my friends when she had a boy. Then I had one and I had the same thought!

@pregnantbee: I'm in Southern. Did you take the state-type test? Maybe I'm not explaining it right.

  16. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@agold: I think that is the NT scan and 2 blood draws.

  17. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@pregnantbee: Woot! Are you doing the genetic testing this time around?

  18. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@JoJoGirl: yea i think I had heard of materniT21 when i was pregnant with LO, but it was not recommended to me since i was under the cutoff. This time, i'm as close as you can be to AMA without officially being AMA, so she wants the additional testing but it likely won't be covered by insurance. yay?

I woke up this morning 100% convinced I'm carrying a girl, and thinking how i hope DH isn't disappointed we're never going to have a boy. I know he'll be ecstatic as long as baby is healthy, but the idea of being outnumbered 3-1 in the house is scary for him

  19. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

    @pregnantbee: Yep. That's what I did/am doing.

  20. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@JoJoGirl: I already did Counsyl awhile back and got "low risk" and girl. I also did blood draw #1, the NT scan (which was good in conjunction with the first blood draw), and will do blood draw #2 in a couple weeks. I had my own genetic testing before TTC #1, so that looked good, and I didn't feel the need to do it again. Eagerly awaiting the A/S and confirmation that it is, in fact, a girl Not planning to do any invasive testing unless there is reason. I hope not! You?

  21. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@pregnantbee: Is Counsyl like Panorama/Harmony etc?

My insurance doesn't pay for the NT scan AND the genetic testing, so I thought you get one or the other. I had my blood drawn for Panorama last week, so don't get an NT scan or any of the blood tests associated with it.

  22. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@JoJoGirl: My insurance didn't cover the private genetic testing for the baby so I paid out of pocket. My insurance then covers the NT scan and genetic testing that is associated with that. Its basically free for me and I sort of thought it was something covered through the state.

  23. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@agold: Are you AMA? I think insurance covers it if you are. The state doesn't cover anything for us. Because I'm AMA, the genetic testing for the baby is covered, but the NT is not because it doesn't test for anything additional to Panorama.

  24. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@JoJoGirl: No, I'm not AMA. And really.. I'm basically clueless as to what is even happening at any of my appointments. And I'm generally a smart girl, but these appointments have me in a whirwind! The doctor on Monday was like 'so, do you have any questions??" And I just sat there, like, "umm.. no." Ha. Soooo lame.

  25. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@agold: Hahaha. yeah that's why insurance didn't cover it, you aren't considered "high risk"

  26. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@JoJoGirl: Yup! Mine pays for both that and the NT scan. I have no problem doing both, especially since it's paid by insurance

  27. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@pregnantbee: Oh I would too! Insurance paid for both with my first, don't know why they're being all stingy now

My OB/midwives practice doesn't mention any of those additional tests. They do mention NT but that's it. The midwife even agreed with my assessment that at my age the NT test was unnecessary so I haven't had any testing.

  29. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

@coopsmama: I think it's just age, not even type of practice. I had all the tests with a midwife with my first and again with this midwife this time around.

  30. coopsmama

    cantaloupe / 6059 posts

@JoJoGirl: Well, they gave me a huuuuuuge packet this time around that they give all their patients and it had all sorts of info that didn't apply to me either (stuff for AMA moms, high risk, etc.) and it mentioned NT testing of course but no other tests were mentioned and there were no other fliers provided.

@JoJoGirl: same for me. I'm doing harmony, so no NT scan.

@JoJoGirl: @coopsmama: I'm AMA and with a midwife practice, and no additional testing is offered by them besides NT. We are going to see how the NT comes back before we see about any other additional tests that we may want to have. But I'm pretty clueless!

Anyone have recommendations for maternity clothing? I'm feeling uninspired. I have a pair of home jeans and a nicer pair- but the nicer pair are a little big, so I may buy one more pair (I can wear nice jeans to work). Also have a couple pairs of cords and a denim skirt- so I'm pretty set on bottoms for now.

My issue is tops. I have a lot of t shirts and some sweaters- but I'm looking for maybe a couple nicer blouses? Slightly casual, but a little nicer for the office, and something that will extend into the spring and early summer?

I'm basically planning to get a couple swing tank tops to wear with cardigans, and some maxi dresses for the summer time when I'm huge. I'm more worried about the next few months.

Rambling, sorry. Last time I mostly got stuff at the gap but their selection seems really small now! I hated motherhood maternity- I swear everything was polyester and fell apart almost immediately. We have no local maternity stores, so I have to shop online.

@Silva: I'm looking for the same thing. Stuff that isn't cheap cotton because I will wear to work and wash frequently. Gap doesn't have much right now. Old navy is a joke for work stuff. Not sure where to go.

I actually signed up for a Stitch Fix maternity box this month. We will see what I get.

@Silva: how about loft maternity? I think it's online only but they have lots of tops and stuff. I was really surprised to see how limited gap's selection is - I think it used to be a lot bigger?

  38. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Pirouette: oh, I forgot about loft. I will check there. And yeah, I think gap must be scaling back their maternity stuff. I did get a bunch of the gap body t shirts, which were my absolute favorite last time. And I normally wear their simple pull over bra (tiny boobs over here), so I just size up for later in pregnancy.

  39. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@Silva: I noticed because I used to love wearing their shelf bra camis under my clothes last time instead of having to wear a bra sometimes. But I somehow managed to lose almost all my camis! And they don't sell them anymore, and I noticed a much smaller selection. I remember reading they weren't doing well so who knows? I have a few gap body shirts in a size larger than I normally wear and I loooove them!
