@pregnantbee: I didn't do NT blood work last time because I did the MT21. I was expecting not to do it again, does it add value over the Panorama testing?

@ShootingStar: Honestly, it's probably redundant. But insurance pays for both and I liked the idea that we could get a scan, see the folds and development of other organs, too.

@MrsSCB: YAYYYY!!! So glad to hear this
@mrschickpea: things are moving around to make room great that you are 15 weeks already! is this when you go back for the second try for Panorama?
clementine / 928 posts
@LCTBQE: we are still discussing whether we will try it again next week at my 16w. The NT looked great and I'm low risk so we were debating doing it again so close to the 20 week A/S. Anyone have any suggestions? Did anyone just do the NT scan and not the Harmony or Panorama?
pomelo / 5257 posts
@mrschickpea: I did just the NT scan -- the NIPT tests were very expensive OOP at my doc's. We were prepared to do the other test if there were any concerns but both the nuchal measurement and blood test came out normal.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@mrschickpea: Last time, the NIPT didn't exist, and I was just fine only doing the NT. If the NT results were questionable or negative, then I would have gone on to do an amnio. So I wouldn't worry too much if you can only do the NT and not NIPT.
pear / 1718 posts
@mrschickpea: For me. it's the same as @pregnantbee: discussed. For my first pregnancy, the early blood tests didn't exist/weren't available. There were blood screens, but nothing as accurate as the Materni21/ Harmony/ Panorama extravaganza we currently have going on. For my first pregnancy, I did the quad screen blood test, the NT scan, and also opted to have an Amnio. Although my risks of a chromosomal disorder were low based on the blood screen, I wanted to be absolutely sure that everything was okay. (And it was!)
As an aside, now that I've had both an Amnio and a CVS, and in light of the current testing options, I would do a NIPT blood test and confirm with an early Amnio at approx 14 weeks (which I didn't even know was an option until I spoke with the Doc performing the CVS). But, this is absolutely my last pregnancy, so I won't need to make those decisions ever again!

I've got a ton of kicking today!! So exciting, since last time I didn't identify baby kicks until almost 20 weeks.
pomegranate / 3331 posts
@mrschickpea: with my 1st, i didn't have panorama testing, but i found out the sex at a 16 week ultrasound. is your appt next week an u/s? if so, it's possible you might be able to tell. If my panorama test comes back with insufficient fetal dna, I'll wait for the anatomy scan to find out the sex, given that the NT scan went great.
In other news, the NT scan went great!! I just got back, baby is doing really well in there, caught up from 5 days behind to 1 day ahead! guess stuffing my face is helping absolutely no concerns raised, waiting on the blood work to confirm of course. only bummer is so far I have an anterior placenta, so no movement for a while. but she did say it often flips this early, so we'll see. I'm SO relieved ladies!!
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@ShootingStar: So exciting! And crazy because I was just coming to say that I'm 99.9% positive I felt baby in bed this morning - it was completely recognizable! Not a kick but definitely a movement - felt like a fish swimming in water for a second. so fun!
@Pirouette: Happy to hear your great NT scan results! You must be relieved.
I am craving a root beer today! Wth!!! I never drink root beer. It's all I can think about though so I think after grocery shopping this morning the kids and I will have to run through the Sonic drive thru, I'm embarrassed to say.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@ShootingStar: That is awesome, can't wait to feel those kicks!
@Pirouette: yay, congrats on a good scan!
@coopsmama: that is so funny because I've also been drinking a ton of root beer. Yum!
Hello, second trimester! 14 weeks today -- feels like it's gone by fast! I have a one-on-one meeting this afternoon that I think is going to be about changes in my department with my boss leaving. I'm nervous, I hope it's good news...
ETA: OH, also, I'm having dinner with three friends tonight and will tell them I'm pregnant. They're the first friends I'm telling so I'm pretty excited! One had a baby in October, one at the end of January and one is due in June. Baby central over here, haha.

@coopsmama: thanks, i am!!! and seriously, go get that root beer!
@MrsSCB: thanks, i hope the meeting goes well! your friends are going to be so excited for you! and you'll all have babies so close in age!

@Pirouette: Wonderful, wonderful news!!!
@coopsmama: There is no shame in Sonic!
@MrsSCB: Good luck this afternoon! *fx* for you! And how much fun to tell your friends . . . they are going to be so ecstatic for you!
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@MrsSCB: Whhhhy is soda so yummy while pregnant?! I had heard before that cravings are a result of a nutritional deficit or something but there is literally nothing nutritional about soda so I'm starting to not believe that theory. Oh well - I won't complain because it tastes so yummy!
Have so much fun telling your friends! I'm sure they will be thrilled to hear your happy news.
@Pirouette: I'm thinking about it! Just need to get my crew ready and out the door and we will be on our way to satisfy that craving!
And ladies...I haven't been physically sick in six days! That's huge for me. Still some nausea but nothing like it was. It's the little things!
coconut / 8472 posts
@coopsmama: I know it's so amazing :). She was kicking for a while this morning behind my belly button.
@MrsSCB: This is your first right? The toughest thing about the first time for me was that my stomach was in constant turmoil so I attributed a lot of stuff to just stomach grumblings. Once I finally figured it out I was like "ohhhh" lol. So if you feel some weird feelings in your stomach like jumping beans or twitches, that might be it :).
pear / 1718 posts
@coopsmama: What an awesome six days - so glad you are feeling better! And seriously, enjoy the root beer! Yum!
@ShootingStar: That's so awesome that you're feeling movement! And you're so right about recognizing kicks/movement . . . when you finally realize that that's what you're feeling, you realize that have felt it before (but just weren't sure what it was!).
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@ShootingStar: What!?! Lucky! I still don't feel anything. That was by far my favorite part. Congrats!
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@Pirouette: Hooray! Congratulations on a great scan. What a relief.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@coopsmama: Yay for feeling movement. I went through maybe 2w this pregnancy of craving root beer constantly. I usually have root beer cravings from time to time, but it was getting ridiculous!
pomelo / 5257 posts
@pwnstar: @Pirouette: Thank you! It's so fun now that we can share
@coopsmama: for me, I think it's because I can't have alcohol or caffeine (at least aside from the one coffee I have a day), so root beer and ginger ale feel like some of the few "fun" drinks that are OK!
@ShootingStar: That's good to know -- it is my first so I could definitely see myself confusing it with indigestion at first, lol.

@MrsSCB: Eek! Yay 14w! Good luck at the meeting. I hope it goes great.

@agold: I came from an RE last pregnancy and it was SO weird. I felt like everything with the RE was so smooth and efficient and the OB was more...chaotic? Even just things like blood work. I was used to going in the morning, having it take 5 minutes and getting results by the afternoon. My OB would send me over to the hospital wing and it would take like an hour, and then be days for the result! It took a lot of getting used to that things just weren't as efficient.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@ShootingStar: Yes, I feel like it is chaotic! Perfect word. I read something about a two week wait for blood results. It made my blood pressure spike! I just need to be calm, though. Because I'm generally not high maintenance so no need to be now.
pomelo / 5257 posts
For those that did (or have done in previous pregnancies) the NT scan and associated bloodwork -- is it covered by your insurance if you're not AMA or high-risk in another way? I was under the impression that it was covered, but I've been reading that it's not necessarily, and now I'm concerned I'm going to get a big bill. My doc's office didn't say it wouldn't be covered....but maybe it's my responsibility to check first? I guess I just thought my doc would say something if I asked for a service that's not covered. Ugh, I hate insurance!

grapefruit / 4717 posts
@dcw6411: Pssst. Haven't heard from you in awhile. How are you doing?
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@MrsSCB: I was told not covered unless I was AMA or if the NT showed an issue first.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@MrsSCB: Hmmm....I was still 34 when pregnant with DS -- turned 35 a week before his birth. Not sure if I was treated as AMA the whole time or not. It was all covered for me -- my insurance is also great, so I don't know if it would be the same for everyone. May be worth a call to your insurance company?
pomelo / 5257 posts
@T.H.O.U.: Hmm, well the NT scan basically came with a blood test. The doc didn't really give me an option to just do the US part of the NT. It was either, "You can do nothing, or you can do the NT scan, which is an US combined with a blood test." It's different than the NIPT blood tests (like Panorama, Harmony, etc.), though. Less sensitive and can't tell the gender or anything. I'm assuming at least the US part is covered because all US are supposedly 100 percent covered by my insurance. The blood test...now I'm not so sure
@pregnantbee: OK, my insurance is pretty good (relative to others I've heard about)...I guess all I can do is cross my fingers and wait and see if I get a bill. I hope if I do get billed for the blood test it's at least less than $350. That's how much the NIPT would have been, and I obviously would have done that if I knew I'd have to pay for either since it's more sensitive.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@MrsSCB: I thought that some of the point of the NT scan is that it HAS to go with 2 rounds of accompanying blood work? One round toward the end of the first tri and the other round anytime bet. 15-20 weeks? Then they use the stats from the blood work combined with the results and measurements from the NT scan to give you the most accurate odds of any potential problems. I didn't think you could just do the NT scan with no blood work....
ETA: Obviously I'm no doctor, but that's been my experience with both pregnancies. Just went for round 2 bloods today.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@MrsSCB: Oh, you're talking about that part of the blood test, thats just part of the NT and thats covered.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@pregnantbee: @T.H.O.U.: ok I thought the same, that you need the combo. Hopefully I'm good then. I just started hearing from people who said their insurance didn't cover the NT stuff either and I started to worry since I didn't specifically check.
