@ShootingStar: I love Jack and Janie! I haven't even really started to purchase clothes yet, but I just realized that most everything I have (new and hand-me-downs) are all long sleeved. Is there any need for long sleeves when baby will be born in the summer?

  3. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@agold: I keep having the sleeves vs. no sleeves dilemma. DS was born in November so it was a no brainer. But with an August baby it's more complicated. It could be 90+ here, but on the other hand if we're inside the AC will be on. And newborns can't regulate their temperatures so in general you want to dress them in one layer more than what you're comfortable in. So I guess if you're going to stay in with AC, long sleeves are fine. But we tend to go outside a lot to play in the yard or shop, and I don't want her to over heat either.

I actually decided on that particular outfit vs. a different one because it had a couple of layers and we'll be inside mostly when we come home. I'll also put a thin A&A type of blanket over her.

This is the outfit we almost got, but I wouldn't recommend it to a new mom as a going home outfit, because it's not super easy to get baby into with the back snaps - http://www.janieandjack.com/shop/dept_item.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443481583&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374303731259&bmUID=ldEwZFl&productSizeSelected=0&fit_type=.

@agold: I love the fabric of the 2nd one - I almost got it in curtains, but DH shot me down!

The first one is super cute too, I saw it in store yesterday. It looks slightly easier to put on than the pink I linked because there's only one button in the back and you won't have to deal with putting anything over baby's head, which makes a lot of FTM's nervous (and I'm sure I will be too because I'm out of practice!) I'd put baby's arms in the sleeves and then pick her up and hold her against your chest and have DH close the button. Or vice versa if he's not good with tiny buttons . And know that no matter what you put her in, she'll probably cry while getting dressed.

@ShootingStar: So funny that you recognize the fabric!! And wow. I just can't imagine the difficulty of doing things like dressing a one day old baby! What an adventure this will be!

So I actually just paid for a 30 minute photo session to be scheduled for October 16! Yikes! Cue clothes panic.

    coconut / 8472 posts

@agold: Yeah, dressing them can be kind of nerve wracking at first. Their necks are so fragile and the moment you try to change them they start crying. I was thinking of getting a snap up romper, but DH convinced me we should get something different. For DS we had a nice J&J outfit so I felt weird about not doing the same, plus we have done this rodeo before so he thought we'd be fine.

But I was going to get something more like this - you just have to open it up, lay it down, put baby on top, and snap it up. http://www.carters.com/carters-baby-girl-one-pieces/V_118G342.html?dwvar_V__118G342_size=12M&cgid=carters-baby-girl-one-pieces&dwvar_V__118G342_color=Color#navID=header&start=24&cgid=carters-baby-girl-one-pieces

@agold: These are the curtains I considered but Dh shot down: http://cadenlane.com/curtain-panels-coral-and-aqua-gold-sparkle-set-of-2/. I almost got these, but they weren't blackout and the baby's room is super bright - http://cadenlane.com/curtain-panels-bentleys-butterfly-set-of-2/.

@ShootingStar: OMG that is adorable! I just got my first baby clothes order from Old Navy...found an adorable onsie that says "my dad is my anchor" in coral with an image of a boat anchor in the text. My hubs and I are big boat people and his bday is this weekend so I will be giving him this as a little gift.

@ShootingStar: What an adorable and sweet outfit, and name too!

You are way more ready for this LO than I am, and your posts help me remember all of the important things I need to get done before August, so thank you!

@MrsBeluga: yes! So much to do!

  12. MrsBeluga

@agold: We are in Sacramento, it will be 100-110 in August, and we are still planning on thin cotton long sleeves and long pants for when baby is inside in the A/C. When we do venture out I will opt for short sleeves and thin cotton pants. They are so tiny at first that I worry about them being cold since they have no body fat at all for a few months.

  13. MrsBeluga

Our LO will be coming home wearing an easy to put on sleep and play! Super exciting, I know!! When we had DD I brought 3 outfits per day for her to the hospital, she ended up never getting dressed until we headed home, and I remember being so frazzled with the delicate baby and detailed clothes, that this time around baby gets a boring but cute zip up sleep and play :).

  14. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@MrsBeluga: I get really anxious when there's stuff to do! DH too, he has a running to-do list in google docs. We're weird . Also, to some extent I'm kind of worried I won't be able to do anything at all at the end of pregnancy. I was pretty useless at the end of my first pregnancy, and since your body doesn't hold up as well for subsequent pregnancies, I'm afraid it'll happen much earlier this time.

    @ShootingStar: adorable outfit!

@agold: love that J&J outfit - too cute!

@MrsBeluga: sign me up for baby going home in the sleep n play! That's all LO wore for the first few months, and i have zero regrets about that so we'll be doing the same this time around. This baby will be born end of august, but the weather starts to turn pretty quickly up here after that, so he'll be in long sleeves pretty much all the time. the only difference from my first is that we'll get cotton sleepers instead of fleece (she was a winter baby).

    pear / 1718 posts

@MrsBeluga: @Pirouette: We had several NB sleep-n-play type outfits for LO to go home in . . . but she was so tiny that they were all way too big for her to wear (she was barely 6lbs when we finally checked out). We ended up putting her in a plain white kimono top, a cute hat, and wrapped/covered her in an A+A swaddle.

  17. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@MrsBeluga: Oh I am starting to get worried about things I need to do. I can't decide between two cribs and I'm dying. Or like the one crib I like seems to not go with the style of a little table lamp my mom got me that I love. Just like random unimportant things freaking me out. But actual things a baby might really need. Yikes!

  18. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@pwnstar: Haha I brought 2 sleepers - one in preemie and one in NB. The preemie was too small and the NB was MASSIVE. so she didn't exactly look so cute, but whatever...our goal at the time was actually getting her home, not getting cute pics I'm ok with not having that perfect going home pic. Are you planning for another small baby btw? I have no idea whether I should be stocking up on tons of NB stuff again. I'm hoping this baby is bigger, but we'll see. I guess I just won't buy stuff till the 3rd tri.

  19. pwnstar

    pear / 1718 posts

@Pirouette: I hope this baby is a little bigger! LO was 6.14 at birth (but lost quite a bit early on . . . my milk didn't come in until day 5 due to a massive hemorrhage). She was also 2 weeks early . . . I am hoping for at least 7-ish pounds? Which I don't think is outside the realm of possibility!

  20. Pirouette

    pomegranate / 3331 posts

@pwnstar: yea, my LO was 5.5 pounds, so 7 would be amazing! there was so much stress involved with having such a small baby. I know it will be a little easier this time around because it won't be the first time, but man, 7 lbs would make life a whole lot easier!

@Pirouette: I didn't pack a going home out fit at all. (Bad mom alert). Maybe I should consider that this time?!

Both of my kids were over 9 lbs but still fit great in NB clothes. I'm not sure what we will do for this little girl. DD has said she wants her sister to wear her same coming home outfit but I also think it would be fun to pick something new out.

I will say that the first coming home outfit we had was just a dress with bloomers. I didn't account for the rough straps of the car seat that cross over the tops of their legs. We ended up having my mom run home and find a pair of matching white knit pants to put under the dress so the straps of the car seat wouldn't rub.

Also, yes both of my August babies have worn long sleeve/pants even in summer. Mostly because in FL they were indoors most of the time and it offered protection for their skin against irritants from other visitors clothes etc. But some babies run hot and get sweaty really easily. In my mind its better to have some clothes and then strip down to a diaper versus not have warm clothes.

@T.H.O.U.: Great tips! I didn't think about the rough car seat strap.

Well, I'm an idiot and got the time wrong. They were able to reschedule me for Friday, which is a really tough day for me but obviously I will make it work. I am really upset about it. I just want it to be over. And it doesn't help that I'm seeing it as a metaphor for my total inability to get my shit together about this pregnancy.

@OldpuebloJenn: haha! sounds like your LO is just fine though, imagine that

@Silva: oh man, that sucks. Seriously, I can't get my shit together this pregnancy either. I'm glad you were able to reschedule for this week.

    pear / 1718 posts

@Pirouette: I can't imagine 5.5 . . . 6 was tiny enough! She was so small that DH was afraid to hold her because he felt like he was going to hurt her with his giant hands (they're not that giant, but he felt like they were when I would ask him to hold her).

  29. pwnstar

    pear / 1718 posts

@Silva: Oh man, that really sucks! I know it's disappointing, but don't let it rent space in your head, and it is not indicative of any underlying message! It's still early, and there is plenty of time to do, well, everything. No worries. ((hugs))

@ShootingStar: it's super easy to make curtains blackout! Even no sew of you need. I have a south facing bedroom in the desert, with 4 windows- blackouts are a necessity, but I never found some I liked. Instead I bought blackout liner and sewed it on.

  33. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@OldpuebloJenn: They were so expensive, I was afraid I was going to ruin them! I'm not a great sewer, even though I have a machine. Plus there was a several week wait on getting them, so I bought some that came with the blackout fabric.

@OldpuebloJenn: I added black out to a set of curtains too. I cheated even more and found vinyl lined painters drop cloths at Home Depot and sewed them into the top hem of premade curtains that I found on target clearance!

I have yet to pick out a going home outfit but I have a feeling it's going to be something like a cotton sleeper with a zipper. I never dressed either of my other two while in the hospital. We dressed them once we knew we were just a little bit from being discharged. Maybe it's because we have boys or because those kimono tops and blankets are a super easy way to change diapers. Lol

@MrsKerch: I've used a black painters drop as a blackout in my boys room too. Although I just taped it to the window. Classy, I know.

@OldpuebloJenn: I have to know what the baby came home in. Or did your SO have to run home before everyone could leave? Naked? I only packed out outfit and never even considered the baby could have a blow out or something else messy could have gotten on it.

Mental note to self pack more than one outfit for "just in case"Lol

Gripe of the day: I wish people wouldn't comment on pregnant women's bodies. I have one coworker (who has three kids herself) who says every time I see her, "You're so small, you can't even tell you're pregnant!" etc. etc. I'm sure she means well, but it kind of makes me self-conscious and is making me really nervous for my anatomy scan next week, like maybe he's not growing enough or correctly. That, combined with the fact that I'm feeling things I THINK are movement, but not much yet that's like BAM he's moving, is making me anxious.

  39. pregnantbee

    grapefruit / 4717 posts

@MrsSCB: I'd imagine you're just fine. Welcome to what it's like to be pregnant. If you were larger, people would comment on you being larger -- I speak from experience. Being pregnant seems to make some people feel like they have free reign to make all sorts of comments on the pregnant body. I've already gotten a lot of "WOAH" after they ask how far along I am. They don't realize that for me, 2nd baby = bigger sooner. So, yeah. I'm with you.

ETA: I think I've finally started feeling minor movement, but still nothing to knock me over or that can be felt on the outside. I bet you are feeling movement Which is the best part, in my opinion

  40. T.H.O.U.

    wonderful clementine / 24134 posts

@MrsSCB: Yes! But I think if she has three maybe she's comparing to her last pregnancy. I am SOO much larger this time around then with my second or even my first.

You'll get movement I'm sure. Even being the third time, its only been since like 18 weeks that I have felt little pops that I know is the baby. Still nothing like a BAM and nothing on the outside for sure.
