so being the crazy pregnant lady that i am, i called the my RE's office yesterday and requested another scan. (basically had a meltdown over the phone)
i got the scan this morning with a NP at the office, who is just awesome, and i measured 7 weeks exactly! according to my lmp i'm suppose to be 7w5d, but i'm going with my ovulation date which puts me at 7w4d. so the baby is only measuring 4 days behind, instead of the 8 that we were told at our first scan! that is totally in the normal range! i'm so happy! and the heartbeat was even a little higher, 141 two days ago, 150 today, which i think is also a good sign!

@jmarionsmith: Yay, such great news!! I'm so glad you called and got another scan!

Anyone else agonizing over whether to have a NT scan? My doctor told me to go ahead and make the appointment and then if I opted not to do it it would be easy to cancel. I'm leaning towards doing it because otherwise I won't have another ultrasound until 20 weeks and that makes me panicky. But now I'm really worried about getting a false positive or having a child with downs. I'm 30 with no family history, so I think my risk probably isn't that high but I'm still freaked out. I am quickly realizing that as soon as I relax about one thing, I immediately have something else to worry about.

@jmarionsmith: yay!! thats awesome!! i can't believe that other dr made such a big mistake like that. did the NP say anything about it?

@mrs. 64: @Mrs.Someone: thank you!!
@kodybear: thank you! she only said that it's so easy to get a bad measurement because the baby is so small and also that baby is hugging my uterus wall, which makes it even harder to get an accurate measurement. but honestly she took soooo much more time to measure, and even measured other things like my uterus, ovaries, and cysts. the doctor didn't do any of that! i think he was rushed, for whatever reason.
i'm just so glad i went with my gut, even though i felt super crazy!

@mrs. 64: i'm doing the nt scan mostly just to take another peek at baby. i think for me, it would also be good to be prepared if anything did come up. my dr would do a maternit21 test if the screening came back positive so i would know for sure if anything was wrong before the baby was here. for me, i'd rather know sooner to prepare if anything was to come up

@jmarionsmith: glad to hear everything is ok!
@mrs. 64: i'm really only opting to do it so i can get another look at the baby, really. i will be 30 also, at the time of the NT scan (ahhh turning 30 in 11 days!) but i'm not too worried about it since i have no family history and you shouldn't worry either! But like you, if i don't opt for this scan, i won't have another ultrasound until 20 weeks, either!
@kodybear: can you change my due date to 8/21? I was mistaken at the ob's office and while i was making my nt appt i was notified my due date is actually 8/21, not 8/20 like i thought! thank you!

@jmarionsmith: Glad you got remeasured!
@mrs. 64: We opted out of the NT scan with our first because even 20% out of pocket cost would have been almost $200. Now we have better insurance and after two losses we want to know if something is up right away.
Also - I posted a new GTKY thread of the day for us on the August board. Trying to find ways to get to know you all more besides just talking about appointments and symptoms!

@msmug: GTKY stands for "Getting to know you". I think some want it gold because some post personal information in to those threads.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@msmug: Yea sorry. If we want to start another more general GTKY thread that isn't gold please go ahead. These just have some more personal stuff I didn't want out there just yet.

Is anyone considering elective scans? I'm considering one for 10 weeks and also at around 16 weeks. I feel like there's such a gap in between my appointments and it gives me so much anxiety.
bananas / 9899 posts
@chibee: Yeah I don't like the gaps either so I am going to be asking my doctor at my next appointment what scans/tests are covered so that I can hopefully see/get evidence that baby is OK more often. As it is now I'm not supposed to have another ultrasound until 20 weeks!!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@chibee: I did with M. But it was much later on. Early on I got to see her at 8 weeks for dating, 12/13 weeks for NT, then again at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan. We opted for one at 30 weeks because we didn't want to go half the pregnancy without seeing her! Surprisingly the elective scan was the cheapest one!
I would be leery too of doing *too* many unnecessary scans. Inconclusive studies as to if it's safe for baby.
pear / 1974 posts
@pui: yeah so i'm a little crazy and in between posting that earlier and just now, i booked my 10 week scan at this elective ultrasound place. It's called a gummy bear package (how cute is that??) and i get to see the baby in 2D/3D/4D for $75! I can shell out $75 for peace of mind. Plus they give us printed color photos! Super excited and nervous for this. are there any places like that around you that you can go for? i didn't wanna deal with the dr's office and insurance hassle - my dr would only do extra scans if i had a problem, like bleeding etc.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@chibee: my elective scan at my OB was like $30ish??? I would save for the more expensive 4D for later on when there's more to see!

We're doing the NT scan. DH wants to know as much as possible, and I just don't want to go too long without an ultrasound Also, since I'm on Lovenox, it sounds like my doctor might do a few extra on top of the NT and 20w scan. I'll know more when I see her in a few weeks.
And I found out something crazy last night. I told my best friend about the pregnancy (didn't really mean to, but she knows our struggle and asked me about IVF). Anyway, not long after I told her, she got a text from another close friend of ours who is due on the same day as me! Crazy. This friend is awful at keeping in touch, so I haven't talked to her in a while. I'm not ready to tell her yet, but its going to be funny when I do

@locavore_mama: i'll be honest - i'm a little scared of the 4D images so i honestly would choose not to do it if i could for this scan lol

@chibee: HAHAHA Dh thinks they're ugly and alien like so we never did it with M!

Hi All,!
Work has been crazy lately so I have been MIA in posting but I have been following all of your posts. My 2nd appointment is 1/20.
Has anyone told their employers they are pregnant yet? I am only 9 weeks so I haven't yet but I am unsure as to when to tell them. Agh...so terrible at decision making. It is sad but it will probably have a negative effect on my career as my job this year is moving towards a position that will require more travel. Boo

@locavore_mama: it really freaks me out!!! I don't wanna be freaked out by my baby!!!
@beckysue: hi! i haven't told my employer yet, and i don't plan on doing it for quite some time - maybe like after 16 weeks or so? And that's only to get the maternity leave paper work started early, otherwise I would just hold on until they asked! lol

@beckysue: Sorry work has been crazy. I haven't told work yet and I don't plan to any time soon. Maybe once out of the first tri.

@beckysue: I actually ended up telling my boss right after we found out, partly because I wanted the doctor info that him and his wife used with their recent baby. My boss and I have what I would call a closer than normal boss/employee relationship though - he cried for me because he was so excited. It's been great for me to have his support, and it helps that he knows why I'm not feeling great or up to my usual standard. But I realize that this type of response is not necessarily the norm.
I hope it goes well for you and doesn't have a huge negative impact. One piece of advice I read somewhere (maybe HB) was to tell them right after a major accomplishment at work, so its clear your work won't suffer...
pear / 1616 posts
@beckysue: i haven't told yet. i will probably tell my boss after 12 weeks. maybe after the nt scan at 13 weeks. just want to make sure everything is good and out of the first trimester first.
i just tried the doppler for the first time and found the heartbeat! abt 160bpm at 9w5d.

I'm self employed and I don't see my clients often, so I probably won't mention it until I have to warn them that I'll be out for a while.

I told my boss the very moment I got my BFP, but he's also my husband.
I probably won't make it public at work until 12 weeks.

I am going to wait until after the NT scan to tell work. I am 36 and will be 37 when I deliver so I want to wait as long as possible before I go public with the news. I can't wait to have it be out there though. I am such a terrible secret keeper!

@kodybear: So cool that the doppler worked for you. Yay! Makes me think maybe I should have gotten one

@beckysue: I told my boss and closest colleagues last week after my 8 week scan. My morning sickness has been horrendous, so I felt like I needed to explain why I have been coming in late and why my productivity has dropped (I'm normally something of a workaholic). I felt so much better being out in the open with it and they have all been so supportive--and are so excited for me and my husband. They're all men, but all have young kids, and are so happy I'm "joining the club" at last (I'm 35 and I think they've been waiting for this day for years).
I work at a large company though and haven't told anyone beyond our small department, and don't plan to until after CVS testing results are back in a few weeks. Then I'll probably speak to HR about maternity leave and my boss will then speak with senior management about how to cover my absence during maternity leave.
If I didn't have awful morning sickness I probably would have waited to tell anyone at work until ~`12 weeks, when I expect to have testing results and will be basically in the 2nd trimester.

@beckysue: I am actually the head of Human Resources for my company and plan to tell my boss (one of the chief officers) after we get the NT scan results. Personally, I want to have the reassurance of seeing baby again before going public.
From an HR perspective I think it is best to tell your boss before it becomes visably obvious. It's always great to share your news on the heels of a successful project or performance, but if that isn't an option, I would go in there with the news, but also a game plan for your leave. It's encouraging for managers to hear that you are not only excited about your growing family, but are also thinking ahead and willing to plan with them as much as possible to make a smooth transition.
In most companies the Maternity Leave policy is available to you in the handbook. This policy will lay out whatever paid timeoff you may be eligible for in addition to your protected unpaid 12 weeks under the federal FMLA (if your company and employment tenure qualifies).
Hope that helps!

@beckysue: I'm a horrible secret keeper, and a lot of my close female coworkers knew that i'd been going through ivf, so they wanted to know how my beta appointment went... I was able to hold off telling them for about a week since we found out the week of Christmas. But they know now! I actually just told my boss (I'm 8 weeks today). His reaction was "Oh $hit!! That's Awesome!"

@kodybear: i'm so jealous!! my doppler is lost in the mail the expected delivery was yesterday and the tracking info hasn't been updated since wednesday 5am!!!!

@MrsT927: I bought the sonoline b from fetaldoppler.net - it was free shipping through USPS (2 day priority) and it's been 3! I'm too impatient for this.

Ideally I would like to wait until 12-13 weeks to tell work, but I'm really worried that I will not make it that long. I am already trying hard to camouflage a little bump at 7w5d and while I don't think anyone is suspicious at the moment, I think it will be hard to go another month without someone noticing. My boss is terrible with confidentiality and not exactly tactful either. If something bad happened and I had already told... it would be awful.

@mrs. 64: when i told my boss at 8.5wk bc of having several doctor appts coming up, she was like "i had a feeling". so guess i wasn't good at hiding things?
