@Sharpie: Congrats on finding out you are having a boy! Sorry to hear you are still sick. I still have daily nausea and for me it gets worse as the day goes on. With my daughter it mostly went away by now and I'm terrified it will last all pregnancy with this baby.

@T.H.O.U.: Yep, I definitely am going to. Although last time she said throwing up once a day is "acceptable" as long as I keep everything else down. Ick. I am concerned about the numbing in my hands though

@Mrs. M: Ugh, I hope we both feel better soon!

@sharpie: Congrats on your boy! I still have some nausea at 15w but it is getting better. I'm sorry you are feeling so sick.

    Just curious:

Those that are having boys were you (or are you) pretty sick or more sick than your last pregnancy?

Those that are having girls, how's this pregnancy going?

@ Kodybear: I'm going to give my sister LO's clothes since she has a 4-month old. I'm probably going to keep a few items at each size and ship the rest out. Still trying to get over the fact that my daughter won't have a sister! I really think it only worries me because I only have sisters and were/are close. I'm thrilled to have a boy though and experience one of each.

@T.H.O.U: I have been sick with both pregnancies starting before I even got a positive pregnancy test. I'm definitely a little bit sicker with this little guy (compared to my daughter) and it's lasting longer. Funny because everyone always told me girls make you have worse morning sickness...apparently not in my case!

@T.H.O.U.: I didn't get very sick with either pregnancy. About a week of nausea for both. Which is why I was so sure this one was a girl too!

@Mrs. M, @sharpie and @chibee: congrats on the little boys you will be welcoming!

My anatomy scan on Monday yielded no sex news (team green!) but we did get to see the little bugger and see that everything is on track for growth. The little head and belly were measuring nearly a week ahead, which the OBGYN (who I had to see for this scan, rather than my normal midwife) said it's because I'm gaining so much weight. Super fun. Then he launched into a twenty minute discussion about how I should give up carbs and starchy vegetables - his exact words "I"m not saying Atkins exactly, but, pretty close..." - which my dear husband has now taken as gospel and so I am doing my best to cut out all the fruit that I dearly want to eat and focus on protein heavy meals. Sort of frustrating but mostly slightly disheartening- it felt like he was telling me to eat a GD diet with zero evidence of GD in my system. Boo.

    Sending everyone good thoughts!

@yellowskates: Is it bad I want to go punch that doctor in the face? For some reason the desire to punch people when they mess with pregnant ladies has become very strong in my life. Everyone just seems to have an opinion.

You are doing your best - you are growing a human. I don't see your doctor growing any humans. Obviously don't go overboard (I don't think you are), but don't let him bully you into not eating fruit. Yes, fruit has sugar in it, but it also has vitamins! It's not like you are saying you dearly want to eat twinkies.

    end rant.

  12. T.H.O.U.

@yellowskates: Wow that is crazy for him to say! I would talk to your midwife about it.

  13. swurlygurl

    honeydew / 7091 posts

@yellowskates: Woah - that's a pretty big change to make to your diet without an actual reason. Some women just gain a lot of weight and are totally fine! Maybe your due date is off by a week? Do you think you've gained a lot of weight?
I'd be a little upset and ask for some testing to rule out GD before making such sacrifices - giving up all that stuff while pregnant is torture!!

@sharpie: Congrats on your boy!!! Sorry you're feeling sick. I was sick all first tri and just started feeling better a couple of weeks ago at around 15/16 weeks. I'm still having the occasional bout of throwing up. But that's been like only once a week.

@kodybear: thank you for keeping the list updated!

@T.H.O.U.: #1 was a boy and I was really sick but it was gone by 14 weeks. This one is a girl and I'm even sicker this time and it's lasted longer.

@yellowskates: Ugh! I would also talk to your midwife about it.

  15. Mrs. M

    kiwi / 645 posts

@yellowskates: I had a similar issue during my first pregnancy. My OB office has several doctors and during an appointment (well into my pregnancy) one of the doctors (who I saw for the first and only time on that visit) gave me a hard time about my weight. He told me he "didn't want me to be unrecognizable at the end of the process." I was really embarrassed and cried after the appointment. I didn't change my diet due to this chat since at that point my morning sickness was gone and I was eating pretty well. I found it weird to be going on basically an Atkins diet while pregnant as he hinted towards. When all was said and done I gained almost 40 lbs and within a week was down 20. I was told I had quite a bit more amniotic fluid than average and this obviously added to my weight gain as LO was under 8 lbs. Don't be too hard on yourself and if that diet doesn't seem right for you, you may want a second opinion.

    blogger / apricot / 310 posts

@mrskc and @T.H.O.U.: I think I probably should reach out to my midwife; you guys are right!

@swurlygurl: That's what's crazy- I'd say I've gained more than I'd like to at about 19 weeks (about 17 pounds), and the baby was measuring a few days ahead at my 10 week appointment as well! I feel like it might just be that the date is a bit off. I feel like he looked at my chart, saw the weight gain and decided he was going to find a way to talk to me about it. I've been trying to follow the mantra "my body knows what it's doing!" and not going crazy overboard on eating any one thing in particular. Hell, I've basically stopped eating ice cream because I don't really want it and I LOVED ice cream before.

@BakerBee: Your rant is EXACTLY the reaction I had, and am still having, truth be told. I guess I feel like moderation has to be the name of the game, no? Boo.

@Mrs. M: Thanks for this perspective! I do feel like I'm on track for about 40 pounds to gain, which I know is at the top range of 'normal/recommended' but I also really, honestly believe my body is doing what it wants and needs to do. If you didn't follow the diet as he suggested, did you change anything? I'm trying to take it with a grain of salt, and I feel like I'm disappointing my (loving, understanding, completely on my side to make decisions but fears what the doctor said) husband when I eat a bread.

I ought to just call the midwives! It just seems to dumb to call and say "is the OBGYN mean and crazy, or am I?"

Thank you all for your immediate support! Feeling pretty lucky to be a part of the August mama group

@Yellowskates: I tried to be mindful of what I was eating, and not go as carb crazy as I while I was dealing with morning sickness. Overall, I just ate everything in moderation and listened to my body. I refused to cut carbs as it just didn't seem right to me. Your weight gain doesn't seem excessive at all. I've gained 20lbs (with my current pregnancy at 19-weeks) and baby is measuring about 5 days ahead. No concerns with this were mentioned at all. I stressed way too much about my weight the first time and knowing how it played out I'm refusing to get worked up this time over the number on the scale! Try not to feel like you're disappointing your husband. Being pregnant alone can be stressful enough!

Just got back from my anatomy scan and everything looks good. We found out that its a...... BOY!! Yay! That's what I had thought in the beginning and what both DH and I kind of wanted so I'm just feeling so blessed. He was moving and wriggling like crazy, which was neat to see. I also realized that I think a lot of what I assumed was digestion is actually baby arms. And maybe what I thought was baby is baby kicks. I also asked about the fish thing, and she suggested I just not eat any more tuna the rest of the pregnancy, since its one of the bad ones.

@yellowskates: Your weight gain sounds identical to mine. I got some feedback from the dr at my last appointment that it was too quick and cut my carbs and juice. I've been being careful, but nothing drastic. They didn't mention anything today, so I wonder if there was just a huge increase between my previous appointments...

@Mrs. M: Such great advice and SO ridiculously comforting to hear from an experienced mama that I really ought to keep trying to be non-stressed about it. Your current pregnancy sounds so similar to mine in terms of weight and baby's size. Deep breaths now happening on my end- thank you!

@JennyPenny: Maybe that was it?! I gained 'too much too quickly' between the appointments... I didn't watch the scale this time because I was trying to be all chill about it all. HA. Good insight- thank you! Also, congrats on your LITTLE BOY! Woot!

On another note, any other anterior placenta gals out there? I have felt what I'd call one definite punch, but other than that, just little flutters. Eep!

  20. kodybear

    pear / 1616 posts

@JennyPenny: congrats on your baby boy!!! just curious, was your dr talking about canned tuna or just regular tuna or both?

@yellowskates: i had an anterior placenta last time. i think i felt kicks around the normal time but they just weren't as hard. but she was also a sleepy baby and didn't move as much in general. yay for feeling the baby!! i love feeling the little flutters.

@sharpie: I've had a rough time with nausea since days before I even got my BFP at 10 DPO...and it continues! I'm 17 weeks now and still on Diclegis (which has helped soooo much toward making me functional and vomit less) and even so I threw up yesterday morning. I'm waiting for it to stop any day now!

Before I turned to medicine to help control the nausea/vomiting I tried EVERYthing under the sun and spent hours scouring the internet for every possible trick or tradition to lessen the nausea. Sea bands also helped me a bit with taking the edge off (though I still vomited, the nausea wasn't *quite* as bad when I wore them) but I wore them so constantly--including overnight or else I'd wake up and vomit--that I got tendonitis in my wrists from them! So I feel your pain! I hope you start to feel better soon!!

@T.H.O.U.: I'm having a girl and have had ROUGH nausea/vomiting. But this is my first so I have no comparison!

@kodybear: she suggested I stay away from all tuna for the remainder. She said the mercury levels in tuna vary so much from variety to variety and even where they come from that it's easiest to just avoid, especially since some of them can have pretty high levels. I'd guess if you hadn't goofed like I did, it wouldn't matter too much, but for me I guess she wants to put them in the same category as swordfish, since I've already had quite a bit. Just to be safe.

@yellowskates: I've had anterior placenta both times. First pregnancy I didn't feel anything until about 21-22 weeks but by that point they were definite 'thumps'. This time I've been feeling light thumps and pops much earlier - about 16-17 weeks?

Wow! Lots of boys!! Congrats ladies!!

I've had a nasty cold the past few days. I rarely get sick so it's always extra fun when you get sick while pregnant and caring for a toddler.

In think I'm starting to feel movement but I'm still not 100% sure. I hope I start feeling it soon. I have an anterior placenta too.

We're having a baby GIRL! We're over the moon and completely shocked, as the tech at the NT scan had guessed boy based on nub theory. We still don't 100% believe it, but had them check twice.

I can't believe I'm having a little GIRL! Definitely waiting to buy anything until after 20 week scan though, I need some more confirmation!

@pui: Same here... My belly is a little harder up top where all my organs are moving around, but that's it. I had felt small flutters a couple weeks ago, but those stopped. I can tell I'm getting a little bigger though, because it's starting to get more awkward to sleep flat on my stomach. I can't tell during the day though

@pui: @swurlygurl: I can finally feel confirmed movement. It feels like the baby is a fish swimming in its bowl and hitting me on the stomach with its fin. I can definitely still sleep on my stomach, although last night I was questioning whether I was supposed to be? I figure if I still can and it doesn't hurt, it has to be fine?

@ Sera_87: Congratulations! So many boys this week!

The last few days I've been really sick again. I'm 19-weeks along and it's really getting old. Wondering if weaning my daughter completely (as of Monday) has something to do with it. I'm sure my hormones are a hot mess between that and pregnancy.
