@KayKay: That makes sense! I think I have a fairly quick letdown too because Logan rarely eats longer than 15 minutes as well, although at night he tends to take both sides and during the day he doesn't. Though when he was clusterfeeding, it felt like he'd eat for an hour at a time, take an hour break, and then go back to it!

@ChiCalGoBee: I hope that today was a better day for you and baby and that the Zantac ends up helping!

@BandDmommy: Thanks so much to you and @MrsF: for checking in! Today was definitely better. Way less screaming! He took an amazing 2.5 hour nap today which meant I got a lot done. Of course he hasn't slept since and is now overtired, but that's okay! He is still spitting up some but it is way less-I already think the Zantac is making a difference. He also went 3.5 hours between feeds last night (up from 3), which made a difference. I hope that is the beginning of longer sleep for us all at night!
I pump once a day and usually get 3 oz, but today it was less than one total . Hoping it was a fluke, because I need a full feed for my husband to be able to give him a bottle at 5 AM!

@BandDmommy: today was my longest stretch alone with two kids so far (my mom came over at 4 and stayed through dinner and bedtime since DH was going to be gone from 9a-10p. It was a huge help to have my mom, but also nice to see that I could handle most of the day by myself. I'm lucky to have been able to work myself up to a full day. J is still nursing at least 30 minutes at a time (he would go forever, honestly) at least 10x in 24h (growth spurt?) so it's a lot to ask M to be patient for!

@ChiCalGoBee: glad you are having a better day!
@MrsF: sounds like things went well! DH didn't take leave right away so I've solo parented 2 as well. For me, it goes fine until about 6 pm. Doing 2 bedtimes alone is a little intimidating.

@ChiCalGoBee: I'm so glad that he seems to be feeling better! For both you and him!
@BandDmommy: She still fits in NB clothes, but she's also not swimming in the couple of 0-3's I've put her in. We switched to size 1 diapers today too! It's bittersweet.
@MrsF: Solo parenting two is tough for sure. DH went back to work after Thanksgiving, and I've been solo during the day since then. I have a hard time keeping L entertained while I nurse C. She's getting more screen time than I'd like or is usual, but hopefully that's temporary. I'm glad you've had help easing into things! Hopefully you can hit a groove and get out of the growth spurt before being alone too long!

@BandDmommy: I am feeling so much better, thanks for asking. I actually got out of the house today. We hit the grocery for a few things and then picked C up from daycare. I solo'd for about an hour and cooked dinner. I felt like a hero.

@MamaG: you should feel like a hero! That's amazing, never mind being sick! I hope you feel better soon.

@MamaG: yay for feeling like a hero! I've been really trying to acknowledge every little accomplishment. These things are not easy!

Here's a clip from Oprah with the 5 different cries a baby makes to communicate. This has probably been shared on Hellobee before, but as I'm attempting to parse my own son's different cries, I found it really helpful to watch the following segment. I couldn't find a YouTube with only the babies making the different cries, but found Oprah. Starting at about 4/5 minutes in they run through the sounds babies make to communicate, including real babies making the sound. I find it super helpful so thought I'd put it here for the new mamas!

@rattles: way too much screen tIMd here too. I keep telling DH we are in survival mode.

@BandDmommy: yea... she falls asleep in between and maybe my milk comes out slow too?
Had a tough night.. One of her fussy nights. Ended up nursing her laying down till we both passed out at some point!

@ChiCalGoBee: very interesting! I need to makeyself a cheat sheet and try this out.

@BandDmommy: Someof the newborn footies are already too short on H His little legs and/or torso must just be too long! It's weird though because they're all Carter's and some NB fit and some don't.
@Adira: We are averaging about 4.5 hrs a day. The cluster feeding is so rough on my nipples!! The first full day we were home and I was tracking, he nursed for 7 hrs!!!!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@ChiCalGoBee: That video was fascinating!!! And now I feel clueless, haha. I'm not sure I've noticed Logan making any of these distinct sounds... maybe I'm not very observant??
@snowjewelz: How'd nursing while laying work for you? I tried with Logan once when I was EXHAUSTED and he was nursing non-stop, but I don't think either of us got any sleep. I never perfected side-lying with Xander either. Hope you eventually got some sleep!
@theotherstark: Holy smokes - 7 hours is a lot!! Hopefully your LO gets more efficient at nursing soon!!

I finally gave in last night and let J sleep
In the swing. That gave us 2 to 3 hour stretches from feed to feed, so I feel much better. He still seems uncomfortable a lot of the time, groaning and straining and having some relief when he farts or poops. Any advice for newborn gas?
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@Adira: ha it was the first day home, and be nursed a LOT since my milk was just in. Had some super long sessions where he kept falling asleep too. We are at about 4.5 hrs a day now. Most sessions are 15-20 mins.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@MrsF: I've heard gripe water helps with gas? But I've never tried it... You can also try laying him on his back and bicycling his legs - I think that's supposed to help? I forget how to care for a newborn, haha.
@theotherstark: 15-20 minutes actually sounds pretty normal! We're actually back up to 3 hours in the last 24 hours, although I stop timing him when he switches to comfort nursing, so he's actually attached to the boobs for longer than that!
pomelo / 5298 posts
@MrsF: We have a lot of gas issues too. For C we used mylicon (spelling?) drops and I'm not sure how effective they were. She wouldn't take gripe water.
What seems to help most right now is trying to make sure we are getting good burps and limiting her screaming/crying.
honeydew / 7283 posts
@Adira: I feel like I forget how to care for a newborn too! We tried gripe water with my daughter, maybe we should give it another shot. We've been trying a lot of massage and bicycle kicking. At least it makes it feel like we're doing something!

Any advice on getting this sleepy boy awake to nurse? The staff in the hospital really helped me with this part and his latch is good once he is awake or even sleepily rooting but now that I am home we can't get him to wake up for the recommended times between feeding. He is almost two days old
Hope you all are doing great.
persimmon / 1328 posts
@magnolia: I tended to undress, tickle, or even put a cool wet cloth on my LO to get her to wake up enough to eat. She is a hot head, so I needed to cool her off sometimes to keep her from getting so drowsy.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@magnolia: We had the same issue with Xander because he was jaundiced and so sleepy. Try doing a diaper change first, undress him, tickle his feet, rub his cheek, etc. Good luck! I remember how hard and frustrating it was with Xander!
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Adira: I only did it twice so far out of desperation.. It took us a while to get comfortable, I don't do it on "normal" nights.
@MrsF: Mine's having so much gas too! (I think b/c I use a nipple shield). I'm starting to think when she's super fussy it's b/c she can't release gas!
@theotherstark: I really hope we get better with this whole nursing thing too.. I easily rack up 5 hours by now and it's not even evening yet!
@magnolia: Mine falls asleep ALL the time too.. Attributing to long nursing sessions! I always nurse w/ her naked. And we have to sit her up, talk to her, etc but sometimes she is just passed out!
So it's okay to feed gripe water this early?
Also are you guys feeding the vitamin D to your LO? We just went to buy the drops today.
Went back to the ENT today about the tongue tie. Apparently LO has a posterior tongue tie, so it's not imperative that further action is needed, and it does appear to someone not in that specialty as a tongue tie. If I am ultimately still having issues with BF and LC confirms it's b/c of tongue tie.
Uggh I am just so tired of nursing all the time, whether its for feeding or for comfort! Plus I can never tell if it's gonna be a more comfortable session or one that hurts a lot. I just feel like we're not really nursing efficiently if she takes sooo long. I'm getting new size nipple shield & pump flanges tomorrow; I'm really hoping they will make a difference! Or its back to LC we go..

@MrsScallop: @snowjewelz: @Adira: thank you! Cool wet cloth and blowing on his face (mean I know) is working! Something is better than nothing. Glad to be home but wow I miss those nurses helping me
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@magnolia: I know, I kinda wish I can press a button and someone will come check my latch, answer questions, etc, haha!

@magnolia: glad you have found something that helps! I know I felt so lost the first time I had to change LOs diaper in the hospital. I was thinking, what, aren't you going to do it?? ha!

I have been baking up a storm the past two days. I can't wait till I get all the baking done so I can relax and enjoy christmas. B had a cookie party with his playgroup today. It was so cute! B is obsessed with decorating cookies. As for D, she is doing well. Sleep is still 2 - 3 hour stretches. But I feel like we are falling into a routine.

I caved tonight and gave E some formula again... he was wanting to nurse constantly but would fall asleep / give up after only a couple minutes, and did this for an hour. Happy sleep baby now.
I ordered the small size shield tonight for my pump, so I'll start pumping again when I get that. Also got started on Christmas shopping! All online thanks to Amazon, 6 done and 4 more started. Usually I get quite a bit done Black Friday but none of that this year.
AND. Newborn pics are up today! Here are a few, so in love.
pomelo / 5298 posts
@josina: Great photos and there's no shame in using formula. I'm supplementing on a regular basis as I'm not able to pump enough.
Pumping has me really frustrated as I know I'm not getting all of my milk. I tried pumping more frequently but only seeing one ounce at a time was so discouraging and seemed to make me more stressed.
Our rock and play finally came in today. We will be giving it a try tonight.
Bedtime has really become a struggle with C. By the time her bedtime comes, we are all spent mentally and she is struggling with only having one of us at bedtime. She wants both of us. That's how her life has been up to this point on most nights. The fighting with her is really tough.
pomegranate / 3973 posts
@Adira: just checked mine and I never change it from ntnp! So will keep it the same for now.
@MamaG: Sorry you are having a hard time with C.
