@Mrs.Lilac: Sorry, I was so focused on your cute bump, I didn't read your update. What a bummer that your husband is back in the hospital, still undiagnosed. That must be so stressful to both of you! I'm so sorry!!

@aegie: I did the quad screening - NT and blood work at 13 wks and then will do more blood work at 16 weeks. If anything comes back elevated or abnormal I will do the maternity21 before an amnio too.

Thanks everyone. I'm much relieved to know our risk is low/none.
Has anyone been crazy emotional? With my first I was really emotional before I even knew I was pregnant. I didn't really experience that this time. Instead, here we are at 17 weeks and I'm a tear-fest. My feelings are getting stomped on pretty easily lately and I cry. I'm not normally a crier, I get mad and quiet which isn't great either. But this crying business is for the birds!

I have a question, and I truly am just very curious--not meant to be insulting or anything! But... what exactly is the purpose behind doing so much genetic testing? Is it just so you will have a better idea of what to expect when your baby is born? Or would you contemplate an abortion if test results came back abnormal?
I guess I'm just of the mindset that there's no way to know for 100% sure if my child has Down's Syndrome, or Trisomy 18, or any other genetic disorder, until he/she is born. And I know I wouldn't have an abortion (not that I'm against abortions for others. I'm very pro-choice. But I just know that I couldn't personally go through with it for something like Down's). And genetic testing can get very expensive! So we have just chosen to not do any testing at all.
I'd love to better understand the other side of the coin, if any of you ladies are up for sharing.

@allison: The only genetic testing we chose to do was the first trimester screening and, depending on the results, we would consider an abortion.
I'm thankful that our results have come back good for both babies (Xander and baby #2) so that we never had to really seriously consider it.
(Not saying we WOULD definitely have an abortion depending on the results - just that we would consider it)

@allison: We did the NT scan & Harmony test just so we were prepared. Like @Adira: depending on the severity of the results, abortion *might* have been on the list.
Welp, I failed the not so fun 3hr glucose test, so I get to go to a class on Wed to learn about all of that fun stuff now.

@AngelicOne: Oh no!!! Sorry you failed the glucose test! What a bummer!

@allison: I haven't had any genetic testing done yet and I'll only do what my doctor recommends; however, I wouldn't consider an abortion.

About how many weeks do they usually do the glucose test? I'm already dreading that! My next appointment I'll be 16 weeks and I thought they were just going to get my measurements and let me hear the heartbeat. Should I be preparing myself for that yucky test?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@whenoceansrise: Our office does it around 27/28 weeks!
ETA: Also, maybe my office is a fluke, but at our first appointment, they give us the schedule of basically all our appointments (week-wise, not actually scheduled) and what they will be!

@allison: My doctor suggests genetic testing, so you can prepare if you will have a special needs child. There are some genetic diseases where a baby will not survive outside the womb, in those cases I would consider an abortion.

@allison: same as @littlek:, at my age (will be 40 at delivery) my overall risk based solely upon my age is 1:40 for any sort of genetic disorder. Those aren't very favorable odds and I was amazed at how much my risks increased from 37 to 40. It is expensive and I hate how much I have to pay for it, but it's worth having the knowledge to me.

@whenoceansrise: Your office/OB should let you know ahead of time when you are having the glucose test. My doctor is testing me at 19 weeks (she really wanted to test at 16 weeks) because I had gestational diabetes with my first pregnancy.

@Adira: @AngelicOne: @whenoceansrise: @littlek: @MamaG: Thanks for your perspectives, ladies
I guess baby must've had a big growth spurt last night, because I've been feeling all kinds of movement today! I love it! 14 weeks along.

@whenoceansrise: Mine was way early because I am overweight and have a family history of diabetes. If it weren't for that, it probably would have been around 27/28 weeks.

Just got the call from my OB/GYN with my Harmony results. Low risk for all of it (1 in 10,000) and baby is a

@allison: I did genetic testing because I had a brother who had a genetic disorder. He passed away when I was pregnant with my first son. His disorder is actually a deletion and tests like Panorama and the like just started testing for it about 6 months ago so it wasn't an option until now! With my first son I hadba fetal echo to check but it's not the most accurate indicator. I will have one this time around 21 weeks again as well though. I'm not really sure about termination but I know the risks and issues that can come with the particular disorder we were looking for and know that it would be better to be prepared and know because baby would probably need big help immediately.
@whenoceansrise: it's normally at 28 weeks but my office is annoying and does it in the first tri as well!
@Adira: My office gives us a list at the beginning of what each appointment entails. I think we might be possibly using the same network...

@cram88: haha, could be!!! I walled you.

@angelicone: Congratulations! Baby boys are wonderful!
@allison:My insurance covers genetic testing because of my age. I'd rather know what we're dealing with as soon as possible so we have time to make decisions.

@allison: my husband is a doctor and has seen some very bad chromosomal annormalities. We want to be prepared for our risk rather than be surprised at birth and if it was a certain abnormality where the baby would not survive we would consider termination.

@whenoceansrise: @sandy: @Adira: @littlek: @mrsbookworm: @winniebee: Thanks! We're excited. Good thing is my mom has a bunch of stuff from my 5 yr old lil brother left, so won't need much clothes wise!

@allison: I asked my doctor how she felt personally about genetic testing for her pregnancies (she had been very open with me). She told me that she felt lucky that we live in Boston with some of the best specialists in the world. She said that if she found out that her baby had a genetic abnormality she would want to be prepared and line up all of the best doctors before the baby's birth. I agreed with that reasoning and we chose to do any noninvasive testing that was offered to us.
