Well I wasn't planning on telling my work that I was pregnant at all unless it became obvious. It's just a summer job, and I'll be done in August. However, I just found out today that the job requires a physical, so I guess I will have to tell them. Personally that seems kind of invasive, I've never had to have a physical for any other job (and I've done many similar to this).

For those of you that have done this before, what generally happens at the first prenatal appointment? Do they do enough to constitute a physical? I'd rather not have to make a second appointment with another doctor if I don't have to.

@Circusbee: I also vote for telling your parents on Father's Day. That's what I wanted to do but I got too excited. I hope it goes well!

@Aria: At my first appointment for this and my last pregnancy, all we did was talk. I asked questions, she told me which vitamins to take, simple things like that. She filled out the blood work req and told me to do it whenever I wanted ( before my next appointment. ) Then the first pregnancy she said to come back at 12 weeks, and this one she said she wanted to see me at 10 weeks. With my first daughter, I thought they would have done more, I was surprised that it was so little. I guess the first one they also asked a bunch of questions about my medical history, but that didn't take more than a few minutes. She also provided me with some good websites. So I wouldn't really consider it a physical.
That kind of sucks you may have to tell them before you wanted to, oh well, I"m sure it'll be OK.

I heard back from the nurse on my labs from yesterday, and she said the doctor said they were "great". HCG was 2,421 and progesterone was 89.1. Labs were pulled at 4w5d. Does anyone know what "normal" is for progesterone at that point? I have found "normal" for HCG (according to americanpregnancy.org, 4 weeks is 5-426, and 5 weeks is 18-7,340) but haven't seen any recommendations on progesterone. Praying for doubling numbers tomorrow!

@heartabandoned: Glad to hear that the cyst wasn't anything any more serious, and also glad to hear the pain has gone down! And yay for great numbers! I'm not sure what progesterone is supposed to be at 4w5d. At 4w0d mine was 45, which she said was fabulous, so I'm sure yours is stellar!

@HeartAbandoned: I don't know what a normal range is, but I know docs prefer it to be around 15-20. I've been googling the heck out of this because my progesterone is a whopping 6. When I got pregnant with DD, my progesterone was 31, and the doctor laughed when I asked if I needed supplements.
ETA: I shouldn't have said "prefer it to be around 15-20" I meant more that they prefer it to be higher than that.

@Kbee: @Tidybee: Thanks for the feedback, ladies! I go back in tomorrow for a follow-up ultrasound and more labs, and I will try to remember to ask the doctor what they look for on progesterone at this point.

@Aria: That's super frustrating that you have to tell your office when you aren't ready! How many people will see the results of the physical? Maybe just HR? Hopefully you won't have to tell everyone... My fear is that morning sickness will hit hard and I won't have a choice but to tell the people I work with. We want to wait until after the first trimester before we start going public, but the restroom situation in my office is not conducive to the kind of privacy you'd want while you're sick!

Are any of you doing anything for DH for Father's Day? I think I want to do something small, but I'm not sure what.

@HeartAbandoned: he's getting a bicycle from R. I'll get him some beer. Last year I was still pregnant (due the day after Fathers Day) and I just got him a card. I might have put some lotto tickets in there but I don't remember.

@heartabandoned I got DH a little onesie that says "love my daddy" and the book "from dude to dad" (I think that's what it's called)

So, how is everyone doing with symptoms? I've already been feeling nauseas on and off (usually when I've waited too long to eat), and I definitely feel seriously fatigued much more quickly. I will say, however, that I feel better this morning! I woke up with less full/less sensitive breasts, and just overall a bit better. I am only 5w2d, so I will take this one day and just enjoy it since I know the symptoms should come boomeranging back shortly.

Anyone else having symptoms come and go?

  11. MrsTal

    clementine / 901 posts

@marzipan: I'm really glad to read this because my symptoms seem to wax and wane too. I was nauseous once this week but only once. My bloating seems to have stopped and my boobs don't really hurt anymore. Only consistent thing is fatigue and frequent urination. I've heard week 6 is when things get worse so I'm preparing for that, only a few days away for me (5w5d today).

Im 5w6d and always exhausted...right around 2:45 I am ready for a nap I struggle to keep my eyes open. I have been wanting to workout after work but haven't been able to muster up the energy!

I'm also really bloated especially by the end of the day. Only felt nauseous once this week hoping that doesn't come next week

  13. marzipan

    grape / 87 posts

@MrsTal: I kind of vaguely remember this happening with my son's pregnancy too (but it's amazing how much I don't remember from that... even though he's not yet two!). I think it was the case that it felt like I'd have hormonal surges (along with symptom surges), and then my body rebalanced and got used to the "new normal" (so my symptoms lessened a bit).

But... again... my memory is so bad from last time!

  14. marzipan

    grape / 87 posts

@mtex14: Oh yeah -- the fatigue. I pick up my son (on foot/via stroller) at 4:30, and yesterday I totally had to sit down and just relax for 15 minutes afterwards because I too exhausted (physically drained!) to start on dinner. I intended to take a midday break to swim laps earlier this week... and instead I laid down to rest for a half hour! (I work from home, so it's not too weird to do that in the middle of the day.)

  15. Circusbee

    apricot / 390 posts

I'm still bloated, and can't get rid of this nasal congestion. I'm also peeing a lot, but I'm drinking more water, too, so that probably has something to do with it. My 2 newest symptoms include shortness of breath (like while showering or after walking up stairs), and being sensitive to smells. It was a by cold this morning, and I didn't have a sweater so I go to turn on the heat in the car and the smell was so horrible I just had to deal with the cold!

  16. marzipan

    grape / 87 posts

@Circusbee: I'm surprised at how senstive my nose is! I have a notoriously bad sense of smell, but looking back on a couple weeks ago, I think that was my first pregnancy symptom. I remember suddenly being surprised that I could smell ALL THE SMELLS that I didn't catch the day/week before.

Oh, and heartburn. Yesterday (and days before), I was having random, caused-by-nothing-obvious heartburn.

I am reassured of the pregnancy because between my original post this morning, and this reply... my breast fullness and bloating is returning. So much for having a day "off."

  17. Kbee

    kiwi / 560 posts

@circusbee: Ooh I like that idea - I think I'll get DH that book too!

My symptoms aren't coming and going, but I feel like they are still pretty mild. I'm only 4w3d, so I'm sure I will feel different at some point. I do feel like I can smell everything, which is a little annoying, but isn't making me nauseous yet. Definitely still bloated and crampy.

  18. MrsB2012

    nectarine / 2466 posts

@HeartAbandoned: I got him a mug from me, it's really big and says good morning handsome on it. I got a book from B about why she loves him or something. I also might get him a gc for a massage, but not sure. Last year when I was still pregnant with B I think I just got him a card, but I can't remember.

@marzipan: I'm so tired, but that's from B not sleeping and teething. I think that if she would sleep proper I'd actually be feeling pretty good. I get random spurts of indigestion. The other day I was at Costco and it was so bad I thought I was going to barf. I was looking for garbage cans. Then I saw them giving out tasters of full sized popsicles covered in Greek yoghurt. It was like the heavens above opened up haha. I think it was the cold that made me feel better.
With B when I was pregnant, at 6 weeks I started puking all day every day for a month. I'm 5w4d now, so I'm trying to enjoy these last few days incase I get sick the same time as last time.

I've had terrible bloating and according to my scale out on 6lbs in 4 days. I think it's all water since I'm congested and insanely thirsty all the time.--which of course also means peeing all the time.

My nausea strategy is to eat a few saltines before I get out of bed in the morning. It has helped a lot with the overall grossness that I feel when I get up in the morning.

The fatigue is definitely the worst part. I have no idea how to kick it beyond throwing in the towel and sleeping at my desk.

Well, DH just told his boss apparently... so much for keeping it a secret!! At least this means he has to go-ahead to miss a few hours of work to come with me to my first appointment in July and hear the heartbeat!

@AnneBird: Welcome! I'm due on the 14th too!

@marzipan: I'm not feeling a lot of symptoms yet, just occasional bloating, but I'm still only 4w5d. Trying to enjoy feeling good while I can, I'm sure it won't last much longer!

@HeartAbandoned: I did very similar to @CircusBee--got DH an "I Love Daddy" onesie and a daddy/baby storybook. I like the idea of From Dude to Dad too!

    @AnneBird: Welcome and congratulations!!

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only bloated one. I also have this horrible lump in my throat after meals, it is seriously so annoying. I am on the verge of nausea, gagging, and food aversions. I have this horrible fear full-fledged nausea is just around the corner...

  26. HeartAbandoned

    clementine / 933 posts

@Circusbee: Is this the book you got? http://dudetodad.com/the-books/ There are several that show up if you search "Dude to Dad"! I love the idea of a book. I may try to sneak away tomorrow to find something for DH.

For symptoms, the most obvious for me is sore/heavy boobs. Holy moly. I've also been really tired, and going to the bathroom a whole lot (also drinking a lot of water, so I guess it follows).

My follow-up today on my cyst showed no change in the cyst itself, but the gestational sac has grown, and the doctor said not to worry at all about the brown spotting I saw yesterday. She said the sac was an appropriate size for how far along I think I am (5 weeks today). She had blood drawn for HCG again today, but said since my progesterone was good on Tuesday, she didn't need to run that one again. She did say the high progesterone could mean that I get pretty severe morning sickness, so I'm trying to brace myself for that. I've literally not thrown up since high school...

@heartabandoned: So glad to hear your appointment went well! But boo for severe morning sickness.

I jinxed myself earlier by saying my symptoms were mild. Come 6pm and all of a sudden I had crazy nausea and my boobs were killing me. Thought eating dinner would help the nausea, but nope!

@Mrs. Coral: Love your Father's Day ideas for your DH!

Anyone else feeling cramps? Today they were the worst yet for me. I don't think severe by any means, but definitely more noticeable than the really mild ones over the past few days. I've had no blood at all, so hopefully this is just normal? How much is too much cramping?

Hi Everyone! I am excited to be here

    Location: CA

    EDD: Feb 16th

    How far along: 4 weeks

    First child? Yes!

    First doctor appointment: June 27th

Any symptoms so far? Nausea and cramping. I struggled with some insomnia(or it could have been been nerves!) earlier this week.

Who have you told? Just my husband. I took four tests over a series of days and he said the lines were too light and they should be darker! I finally went and bought a digital test so he could read it in black and white We really want to tell our parents first (before friends) but it's been so hard to keep quiet! We plan to tell our parents after my doctor's appointment.

I have been toying with the idea of getting my husband something for fathers day but haven't decided yet...

  31. HeartAbandoned

    clementine / 933 posts

@Kbee: Thanks! I obviously want to avoid being sick if I can, but I also feel like if I do get really sick, it might be a good thing for me...I have a severe aversion to throwing up or being around people who are throwing up, so maybe if I have to deal with it a lot during pregnancy, it will desensitize me for when I have a sick child?! But...ick....

@Circusbee: Thanks for the link! As for cramping, I've read that some cramping is totally normal as your uterus starts to expand to make room for baby. I think as long as you don't see any bright red spotting, you're in good shape. I'm no expert, though. Maybe some of our second-time mamas can chime in!

    @blueheron: Welcome, due date twin!!

@heartabandoned: That's true, maybe it will help you later on! That's a good way to put a positive spin on it

@circusbee: Yes, I've had lots of cramping for about a week now. I've heard it's normal. Mine has mostly been what I'd consider mild, and I would only start to worry if it got to be severe or had spotting/bleeding with it.

  33. AnneBird

Thank you for the warm welcome! Now that we are all headed towards Month-2, can I ask when everyone is having their first ultrasound? Mine is schedule for 7/3, but it seems kinda early...

  34. HeartAbandoned

    clementine / 933 posts

@AnneBird: Welcome! My first official U/S is scheduled for 6/30 (I had 2 last week, but they were because I have an ovarian cyst, not to check on the pregnancy. They were able to see a gestational sac while they were in there, though, and the sac got bigger from one U/S to another, so I'll take that as a good sign.) My doctor's office schedules the first U/S for around 7 weeks (I'll be 7w4d), because at that point they should be able to see the heartbeat. GL with your appointment on the 3rd!

I got my 2nd HCG results yesterday, and my numbers went from around 2,400 on Tuesday (4w5d) to more than 6,200 on Thursday (5w0d)! The nurse was very pleased, and so am I!

    How's everyone feeling today?

So I freaked myself out the other day and got in my head that somehow I wasn't pregnant anymore so I went out and bought a cheap target test. Of course it was positive and I felt better seeing the plus sign. Anyone else a nut like me?

  36. Aria

    persimmon / 1121 posts

@autumn865: You're not a nut! I only recently stopped taking pregnancy tests every day. I had a ton of wondfos, and I figure I won't be able to use them again before they expire, so why not. It was reassuring when I wasn't feeling any other symptoms.

@Blueheron: Just saw that you joined us, welcome!

  37. marzipan

    grape / 87 posts

@AnneBird: my first u/s is scheduled for 6/30 (about 8 weeks, I think?). I'm pretty sure my first u/s for my son was about 9 weeks, so this sounds about right.

  38. MrsB2012

    nectarine / 2466 posts

@HeartAbandoned: that's great with the numbers! Today I felt sooo nauseous all day. Horrible! No puking though how are you feeling?

@autumn865: you're my a nut!! I poas today to see how dark it was as I still have a few cheapies left. It was pretty freakin dark hahaha

@AnneBird: my dr wanted to send me for a dating scan, she said the appt would be in 2-3 weeks. That was 2 weeks ago and the hospital hasn't even called to make the appt yet. With #1 I didn't have my firt ultrasound until 20w. I'm kind if glad it's getting pushed a little later so hopefully we can see the heartbeat. I'm just annoyed it's taking to long to even get the appt booked.

I meant to update the due date list today but we had to rush R to the pediatric urgent care. She has some sort of virus. Ugh, hopefully it's fast moving! I will try to do it tomorrow.

  40. Circusbee

    apricot / 390 posts

    @heartabandoned that's great news!!

@swedishfish I hope R feels better very soon!

My office doesn't require any ultrasounds at all, but based on insurance, most get the anatomy scan at 20w. I probably will only have that one, although we will get to hear the little bean's heartbeat on July 18 (9w)!

As for how I'm feeling, pretty much more of the same: bloated, shortness of breath, crampy. I'm 5 weeks today, so I'm trying to really enjoy food just in case I can't next week
