@BabyBoecksMom: I couldn't not know, either! I want to be so prepared...if nothing else, at least mentally prepared. It's a nice way for me to connect to whoever is inside of me!

@math.nerd: I would tell when you feel comfortable! With all these scary issues of mine, I want to wait as long as possible

@ScarletBegonia @HazelEyes @bao @bluediamond @dandelion Thanks - it's so helpful to hear what others have said/done. I'll try to be as delicate as possible, yet do what is best for baby and me. I hope it does encourage him to quick faster!

@fussygal: my MIL has been "quitting" for about 5 years now. She does smoke outside, but it just stinks. I can't help but think if the gunk that could be on her hands after smoking. I'll probably be a little crazy at first about hand washing, so I'll just make sure she's extra careful. As someone who has never smoked, I have a hard time with it, but I know she's smoked for 40 years, and I can't expect her to change overnight.

Hi Marchies! Well I FINALLY got the call from my doc that "all is as expected" with my HCG results - to be honest I'm actually kind of glad she didn't give me the exact # as I know I'd spend the rest of the day googling whether it is high/low. She has recommended no scan before the NT scan as she thinks everything is proceeding normally. I wouldn't mind hearing the heartbeat! But I'm glad my numbers look good, that should get me through the next 3 weeks! I'm 9 weeks today

@ScarletBegonia: yay that's awesome!!! it's probably good you didn't get numbers! i've banned myself from googling a lot of things and it's helped! if I really need to know something I get DH to do the research so I don't freak!

@fussygal: This time around, since they're already trying, I'm gonna say something (especially to my MIL) along the lines of, "don't you want to be healthy to see this kid growing up?" They're young...my MIL is only 53, but smokes like crazy, and she doesn't seem to care about her health. I'm hoping this baby will be a good incentive.

@fussygal: my in laws are very heavy chain smokers. I wouldn't go over to their homes while pregnant because they smoke inside and have no qualms about smoking in front of me. It is truly disgusting. When I'd leave there id smell like an ashtray. I was extremely stressed out when DS arrived about the smoking issue and third hand smoke. The only way mil could hold DS was if she wrapped a blanket around herself before holding DS. One day she came over and I could tell she had just smoked in her car right before coming over. Seriously I could rant about this forever! I refuse to bring LO over there. I feel bad that her grandson can't experience going/staying over at his grandparents house, but his health comes first!

Who has the next appointment? I can't remember if there was a list made for that but I'm excited for appointments! Mine is still 2 weeks away.

@Bao: my next one is August 19th and we get to hear the heartbeat. Counting the days... Can't wait!

@Bao: my first u/s is on Mon 8/5 at 6w3d. I keep having dreams that there is something wrong. Hoping to get a bit of reassurance.

@Bao: My next appt is the first with the midwife on Aug 12th! I should be.. 8 weeks 5 days by that point. Is that too soon to hear the heart beat with the doppler? We are going away the 17th with family and are telling them then, so I'd like to confirm before we go that everything is ok!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@futuremama: I think it's normal to feel that way, but I'm sure everything is perfect!

@Mrs. Champagne: I didn't hear the heartbeat until 13 weeks with A, so I'm not sure if that's too early or not....maybe someone else will know!

@bao Mine isn't until 8/21 at 8w6d!
@Dandelion: I hope that works!
@ScarletBegonia: Yy! So glad to hear!! I agree, it's probably better to not know specifics
@matador84: thats exactly my worry and what makes me sad - that my LO wont get to have the typical grandparent time because of it. Especially since they are my parents and not DHs (hehe, a bit selfish on my part). Here's hoping he really does quit and we don't have to worry about it though!

My appt is on the 13th. I'm so excited to hear the heartbeat (hopefully) and to get some reassurance that all is good.

@matador84: I had a US on Monday and saw the heart beat at 6 weeks 5 days I just don't think they will give me another US until 12 weeks and I was hoping for something before our trip!
watermelon / 14206 posts
I should be either exactly 6 weeks at my first appointment, or a few days before...not sure if I'm supposed to expect a heartbeat at that point? I've never had an ultrasound before 7 weeks, so I have no idea. You'd think I'd know these things by now!

I have my 12 week appointment beginning of September. We are hoping to make our anniversary even more special.
Tomorrow I have an ultrasound on my kidneys. They think I have at least one stone on my left side. Hoping to just know things are ok. I have been so miserable with pain in my kidneys. Here is to hoping we figure it out soon.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Does everyone get an ultrasound at 12 weeks? I only got one at 9 weeks with A, then 20 was the next one. I have a new OB this time so wondering what the norm is.

@MrsRcCar: Ugh, kidney stones are awful things! I hope it's not that, but if it is, I hope you feel better, soon!

My next appointment is on Monday the 5th. We'll be doing the whole ultrasound thing - I am excited, but hope everything is ok! If all is good and we hear a heartbeat, then I think I will be less worried, in general. I'll be 9.5 weeks.... I looked up example images... I think the baby will actually look kinda like a baby! That will be crazy. We're excited.
RE: smoking family members. That's always so tough. I've read that smokers have a reduced sense of smell, and really don't know how bad it is. I have family members who smoke, and when my nephew came into the picture, my sister just had to be firm and nice, but insist that people wash their hands first. And my chain-smoker brother has to change into fresh clothes before holding him - and sometimes he isn't allowed to hold him at all (the smell is really strong, you can smell it from the next room.) Our parents don't smoke, so that's a relief!!! Thankfully, our siblings understand. I think it makes them sad, but my sister can't put her little boy at risk. Everybody gets it!

@Bao: I have no idea my US timeline...I only got an elective one with S because I went through a birth center and they don't really do them. I'm actually looking forward to seeing this LO more often before it's born

@ShayNanigans: Yeah, at about 8 weeks, they look like real people in there.

@Bao: I've got my first next week at 9.5 weeks, then I won't be doing another until 20 weeks.

I'm having my first appointment August 22, and I should be 12 weeks by then. Atleastim hoping that's how far along I'll be. It will be nice to get a dating ultrasound!
Ive decided to give birth and do all the appointments at this 2nd birthing center I interviewed and I'm very excited. But my husband and family are not excited at all... They want me in a hospital no matter the cost. Does anyone have any advice? I've already told them numerous times that for me and my high anxiety i think it would be best in a birthing center. It's very close to the hospital in case of an emergency.

My next appt is Aug 5th!!!! I'll be 9wk 5d & we're so hoping we'll be able to hear the heartbeat by then!!
coconut / 8305 posts
@ChattyCathy: I think the best thing to do is just compare the stats of the birthing center you've chosen and the obgyn/hospital he'd rather you birth at.
For us it was REALLY REALLY easy to get DH on board for our homebirth.... My MW has a low cesarean rate, skilled in breech birth (something you won't easily find in a hospital setting), never lost a mom or baby, & only seen ONE 4th degree tear in her years (most of her moms don't tear at all, even ftm moms of large bebes)... compare those to our 40+% cesarean rate, not vbac friendly, can't birth breeched, and common severe tears and DH wants me to stay away from the hospital just as much as I do. Not to mention the other common birth practices that often lead to other issues during l&d.
My friend was research.... that will probably be very helpful for you too!
cherry / 148 posts
@runsyellowlites: dumb question but do you just ask the hospital for their stats? Or look them up online?
Ok I'm feeling like a total loser... We already have a nursery set up because we were planning on going a different route to get babies before I got pregnant. We also have boy and girl clothes like up to 5yrs just stored in the dresser nd storage containers. Anyways I keep finding myself going in there and just staring in awe at the newborn clothes. I'm such a dork but I can't stop! I really really want to go shopping!
watermelon / 14206 posts
@ChattyCathy: I want to shop really badly, lol. But, at this point I would be only buying neutral stuff, and I haven't found anything that has caught my eye, yet. I have tons of unused girl stuff, but even if I find out it's a girl, I'm sure I'll still be buying more girl stuff, even though I'm really all set, lol.

@ChattyCathy: You should be able to find your hospitals most up to date cesarean rates here:
http://www.cesareanrates.com/hospital-level-cesarean-rates/
Otherwise, you should be able to find see your providers rates from the interview questions I posted earlier in the thread.

Ahh i haven't really been feeling sick but right now I feel like if I stand up I'm going to puke. I know I need to eat though... maybe I will crawl to the kitchen! lol
Hope everyone is feeling ok today!

OK, newbie question here... does anyone know what the difference is between a "bedside ultrasound" and a regular ultrasound? I've had bookoo "regular ultrasounds" with technicians, but my Monday appointment is for a "bedside ultrasound." Is it like a mini-machine that the actual doctor uses? I Googled but didn't really find any good descriptions. I know some of you have already been in for your first ultrasounds... any insight?

And another Q..... Have any of you done CVS testing before? We're going to need to decide whether we're doing it in the near future. From what I am reading, it seems crazy painful. (??) We feel like we want to know, if there is something wrong with the baby, but we are still weighing the pro's and cons. Have any of you done it? Or are you planning to do it?
