My appointment last week was meh. My blood pressure is not great, but not horrible (136/78), I'm slightly anemic, and I did my glucose test. Haven't heard anything so I'm assuming I passed!
I found out one of the three midwives is leaving at the end of January so for the month of February they're only doing midwife appointments at the office that is almost 40 minutes away from me which sucks.
I have a growth scan on the 18th and another appointment on the 23rd. And after that I'll see a midwife every other week!

@Navy_Mommy: these pictures look great!!! How do you get your kids to both look at the camera at the same time?!?!?!

@Lilbear: photoshop. Hahaha.
Tripod with an interval timer and more often than not I'm doing a composite of three photos.

I am so behind on this thread! I always seem to miss it when it's on the front page. Loving everyone's updates and pictures.
I feel like my bump is so much smaller this time, but the mw measured it at my appointment today and it was above the 90th centile on the graph. LO is head down and alternating between kicking me in the ribs and what feels like punching me in the cervix!
Hope everyone is doing good.

Well just after I say that pain hasn't been so bad this pregnancy, I jinxed it. On Monday night I suddenly had excruciating back pain. It was honestly the worst pain I've ever experienced. Worse than labor and the pain was so bad I couldn't keep anything down. I ended up going to L&D because I couldn't deal with the pain on my own. Turns out my left kidney was blocked (likely a stone but because the can't use CT they couldn't see into the tubes). I was on morphine but that didn't help the pain and finally on Thursday the urologists decided to insert a stent to relieve the pain. The used a spinal block for anesthesia so it was reminiscent of labor. The difference was amazing and I feel so much better. Hoping the remainder of this pregnancy isn't as eventful.

@sailgrl18: wow that sounds horrible, I can't even imagine a pain worse than labour. Hope you continue to feel better!

@Navy_Mommy: hopefully the blood pressure was s one-off! I love your photos-- so sweet! We didn't take any this year, so I'm using a pumpkin patch photo we took in October. Maybe next year!
@Bubbles: I feel like my bump is smaller, too, which is funny since it definitely showed up sooner! I think it was firmer (less flabby) last time. How many weeks are you? I'm impressed that baby is head/down already! Mine seems to be all over the place...
@sailgrl18: oh my goodness, you poor thing! How unfair to have that going on during pregnancy! Is it resolved or will they have to do something else after the baby arrives?
I think I've officially entered the crap-sleep portion of pregnancy. Up at all hours to pee or roll over or take the covers off because I'm hot. As a result I'm having really vivid, not-restful dreams. It was a relief to get up this morning, even though I could have actually slept-in if I'd wanted. Oliver is super energetic these days and must be doing a lot of rolling-- I feel kicks in all directions!

@Bubbles: Similar pain level to labor but it's a constant pain so you don't get the breaks you do with contractions. I don't wish that pain on anyone.

@mrsrain: I'm going through the exact same thing over here!!! My plan is to just saline the bajeezus out of my nose until it's gone. Sinus infections are the worst!

Had a growth scan today because my first trimester blood tests put me at risk for IUGR and little Mister is measuring big! Which is great. I'm 29+3 and he's measuring 31. I look forward to seeing what the midwife says at my appointment next week.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@mrsrain: I had bronchitis and sinus infection for a month and after a round of antibiotics, it seemed to taper off, but came back the following week. Then I went on a Z pack and it seemed to taper off when I was taking the meds, but it's somewhat back again since it never fully went away. It's been 2.5 months. Ugh! My throat is so flipping sore from the drainage cough!
@Navy_Mommy: Glad to hear he's big! I had my growth scan earlier this week and it was confirmed by the MFM today that DD is small. She's measuring almost 3 weeks behind schedule! They'll induce me at 37 weeks if she continues to be small and doesn't get out of the bottom third percentile. She's currently in the <10 percentile.

@Navy_Mommy: Great news! You must be relieved! How's settling in going?
@mrsrain: I had what I thought was a cold, but it's been more than 3 weeks of stuffy nose and waking up with a sore throat, so I'm starting to think this is just another obnoxious pregnancy thing.
@Alivoo01: It seems counter-intuitive that they'd deliver her early if she's small! Fingers crossed that she gets growing!
I'm so damn tired of waking up not being able to breathe! Ugh! On the up side, I passed my GD test, hooray! My next door neighbour had a baby on Tuesday and I went to meet him this morning - he's so tiny! It's hard to believe B was ever so tiny! She's having a rough time, though - first she needed 10 stitches, then her new son lost 10% of his body weight and they literally forced her to give him formula, which she was so upset about. Hopefully he'll have gained weight at the next appointment and they'll leave her alone. But seeing her new baby has gotten me actually realizing that before too long I'll have one of those too!

Oh, and I had my first "the baby is 4 days old and I just realized I forgot to start breastfeeding him" dream - I had them all the time with my last pregnancy.

What is everyone doing to celebrate New Years Eve this year? DH and I are having a hard time agreeing on how to celebrate. He wants to go to our friend's kid friendly party, which is 3 hours away. I want to just stay home and relax!!! (So boring, I know). I hate to be a party pooper, but I feel like this gathering is more hassle than it is worth! Do any of you ladies have fun plans, or are there any party poopers like me?
nectarine / 2115 posts
@erinbaderin: I had that dream recently!! SO FREAKIN STRESSFUL.
@Lilbear: I actually have no idea... I'm guessing we will stay in to recover from Christmas! (We are hosting this year)

@Lilbear: Total party poopers! We actually quit doing stuff for New Years a few years ago (way before kids) - our new "party" is Indian takeout, a bottle of nice champagne, and a movie.

@mrsrain: So stressful! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has these, though! I also dreamed that my dad gave him formula while I was asleep and he said "you had it in the house, I thought it was ok!" and I said "I didn't have it in the house!" and he said "well, no, I bought it myself. But still." In retrospect it's funny but I woke up FURIOUS.

Who else is exhausted by the holidays?!
I am working from home this week - and hoping to be off completely next week. K is going to Daycare M-Th both weeks so I can get some stuff done. I am SO behind on SO much stuff in the house and nursery. I feel a hot mess.
I had my 28w check up today and all is well...baby is growing on track but I noticed her heart rate was down (132...compared to 26w when it was 152) - I am thinking she was in a sugar coma from my lovely orange drink.
Started some research on IUDs today...planning to have one placed at my 6w follow up...
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@erinbaderin: Hooray for no GD's and damn weird pregnancy dreams! lol
@Lilbear: We always go to a friend's house to celebrate. It's kind of like potluck style, but the host provides a majority of the food. What everyone else brings is supplemental or desserts. We also usually bring a bottle of nice champagne like Dom to pop at midnight. It's super kid friendly since the group all has 2+ kids so while the adults are enjoying conversation and each other's company, the kids keep each other entertained also. It's great! Besides staying up well past my bedtime that is. lol
@Mrs D: Um. I started my Christmas shopping this past Sunday and plan on picking up the rest either today or tomorrow. This pregnancy is making me a super procrastinator. It's bad!! Yes, I realize Christmas is 3 days away... (>_<)
@Mrs D: DD's heart rate is all over the place for me too! One appt it's in the 150's and the next it's in the 130's then it's at 140 something the following time. I'm always curious what causes such fluctuations!
Have you decided on which IUD you're going with? I saw your thread and was super interested. I thought about Mirena but then I saw some ladies have side effects and lower libido which is no bueno. I've never been on BC's before so this is totally new territory for me.
apricot / 451 posts
@Alivoo01: That gathering sounds exactly like what we USUALLY do, but our local friends aren't the ones hosting this year. My big gripe is that this year's party is 3 hours away and we will have to spend the night on an air mattress.......at 7 months pregnant....with a 2.5 year old......
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@Lilbear: Ooooo. Yea..... 3 hours is pretty dang far just for a one night party! I totally vote staying in and being comfy and cozy!
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@Alivoo01: So - I had heard nothing but good real life experiences about Mirena and Paragard. When I spoke to my Dr yesterday she said she generally recommends Paragard as it is better bang for your buck (10 years vs 5 years). However - if you are prone to heavier periods she recommends Mirena for the hormone angle. I'm a bit the opposite of you...I have basically never not been on BC. For the better part of my adult life - certainly that I can remember in great detail I have been on the ring...so I have no idea what my periods are like. When DH and I have been TTC'ing we have been insanely fortunate to have success in month one...so seriously no experience to go off of.
Now - I texted my sister last night (2 months PP with baby #2 - not sure if its her last) and she responded that she is not a fan of IUDs and will fill me in when I see her over the holidays. Shes a pharma rep - nothing related to BCP - but still has a medical mind so I generally value her opinions. I'll let you know what she shares.
DH will eventually get snipped - or if I find out they can combo me getting snipped with the plastic surgery I plan to have in 1-2 years I will (never have I been so excited to start saving money for something)....I just want something more "permanent" now. The ring is basically not covered by my insurance so it is stupid expensive! I'll keep you posted...
grapefruit / 4545 posts
Also - general comment to the 2+ moms out there...My Dr told me yesterday that the rule of thumb (nothing scientific) is that second labor will be half the time of your first labor...anyone care to share real life experiences?
I was asking bc my practice is down to only 2 Dr who deliver, so they have teamed up with a practice where 7 Drs still deliver. They had previously communicated that I could have an elective induction any time after 39 weeks as I had such a normal delivery with K (admitted at 5cm @6am...delivered at 1pm with 4 pushes). She told me yesterday I can still try to do that but with how normal my delivery was do I really care enough who is there to "catch" since I will likely only be in active delivery for a few hours if I let it happen naturally like I did with K. So many decisions...

@Mrs D: Oh, I'm jealous of your working from home! I'm in the office until Wednesday and wish I had more time! My husband keeps casually saying "Oh, we should do xyz" before Christmas and I'm like "When you say we you mean ME!" "We" should get Bennett a haircut. "We" should go to Whole Foods. Ugh. But for what it's worth, our nursery is still an office. We need to move a sofabed, empty out the closet (currently used for storage and full of junk), and replace the closet doors before we can even start on it as a nursery! Plus while B currently is ok-ish with napping in the toddler bed, we need to get him to start sleeping in it at night. Now I'm stressed!
@Lilbear: Ugh, that is too far to drive and then sleep on an air mattress - I'd definitely skip it. But I'm kind of a grump.
What is everybody doing for Christmas? Do you travel or stay home? We agreed to go to my parents' house (my husband's idea, I should have thought harder about the logistics before agreeing) which is turning into such a hassle - they live about 4 hours away and we can't leave until 8:30pm Christmas Eve....such a stupid stupid plan, I'm totally dreading it.
@Mrs D:

@Mrs D: First I went into labor naturally at 39 weeks and was in active, timeable labor for about 24 hours. Second I never went into labor, was induced at 41+3 and had him 4 hours after they cranked up the pitocin. We didn't do cervadil or anything because I was already 3cm dilated.
So - COMPLETELY different experiences. They really aren't comparable at all, lol.

@Alivoo01: I'm sorry baby is measuring small. Fingers crossed she has a growth spurt!

So I had an appointment today. Another one of the midwives resigned. Long story short, it's not likely I'd be able to deliver with a midwife unless I was 2 weeks early.
I wasn't pleased with the fact that 2/3 of the midwives resigned in the same month. I wasn't happy with how, "oh whatever" they were. And I wasn't happy with the idea of having to deliver with an OB I barely knew.
I had such a horrible experience with MULTIPLE OBs during my previous pregnancies. I basically had a panic attack in my car.
The only other in network practice that has midwives for me is 2 hours away. Not an option.
So I brought up a home birth to my husband again. Since my growth scan had such positive results he agreed to entertain the idea. I emailed the home birth midwife I had spoken to in my first trimester to see if she could still take me and verified with my insurance exactly how much we would be responsible for.
So we're meeting her next week to see if we like her. Maybe I'll end up getting the home birth I wanted from the start!
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@Mrs D: Yes! Please do keep me posted on what your sister says!
As for L&D, I was induced at 37 weeks with DS due to him being an IUGR baby. I was 2cm dilated and 75% effaced. Had him 7 hours after they broke my water and started pitocin and on my 3rd set of pushes.
I'll probably be induced with DD also if she continues to measure small around the same time so I'm curious to see how her L&D will be in comparison, even though I'm being induced again. However, I really enjoyed my induction with DS. I'll just never know what it feels like to go into labor on my own! Which is totally weird, I think. lol
@erinbaderin: Normally, we travel from Christmas to New Year's. It's an annual trip for us. We alternate between a warm and cold location every other year. However, this is the first year in like ever that we stayed home! We went to a Christmas Eve pajama party with a family we're really close to then spent Christmas evening with DH's family. It was kind of weird for us. haha! And it was 75 degrees! What the...
@Navy_Mommy: That'd be awesome if you get the home birth you've been wanting!! When's your meeting? Either way, fingers crossed it's nothing but awesome, happy news. Boo on all the midwives quitting at once! Wonder what's going on. That's a lot of resignation in 1 month when there's only 3 to begin with! Yikes!!

As for me, baby girl is continuing to measure small so I'm seeing the MFM and my regular OB on weekly basis until I deliver her. Fun stuff!
cherry / 109 posts
Alivo- how much does she weigh currently? My girl twin is very small and has 40% chance or more of having trisomy 18 she was 1.5pds at 28 weeks vs her brother being almost 3 pds then
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@momtimes3: she was 1lb 10oz at 26 weeks. I go for another growth scan next week. Her belly was measuring small also and my fluid levels have been fluctuating between 9cm and 12cm. I've been seeing my MFM and regular OB weekly for monitoring. Anything less than 8cm starts raising red flags. I was less than 7cm with DS.
I also start getting NST monitoring next week with my OB.
pomelo / 5573 posts
@Navy_Mommy: That's so strange that the midwives keep resigning! And extra weird that they'd be so cavalier about it! I mean, you obviously chose a midwife for a reason, for them to just go "Oh, you'll probably have to use an OB now" would throw up major red flags for me. When is your meeting with the home birth midwife? Fingers crossed!
@Alivoo01: Your annual trip sounds wonderful! But a Christmas Eve pyjama party also sounds pretty fun, and much less stressful in terms of packing/organizing. I'm sorry your little girl is measuring small, like you need extra stress right now! Fingers crossed that she stays above the red flag line.
@momtimes3: Fingers crossed for you too, and your two little ones!
We had a nice Christmas - even the late night Christmas Eve drive went well. I sat in the backseat with B, entertained him for a while while he looked out the window, and then we both went to sleep and when we woke up we were there! Transferred B inside to the crib and he went right back to sleep. He spent two full days having my parents and brother attend to his every whim (he got a balance bike but much preferred to have somebody push him around on it) and my husband and I got a bit of a break from constant toddler entertaining.
I feel like the third trimester is hitting me hard, though! All of a sudden my joints are stiff, I have to pee three times a night, and the heartburn is outrageous. I need to go get my Rhogam shot this week but I'm finding it hard to motivate myself to drive to my hospital (45 minutes away) to do it - I'm off work, B is in daycare, and all I want to do is sit around in jammies watching tv.
Oh, and a funny "people with kids really don't get it" story - as I was leaving on my last day before Christmas, my boss said "Enjoy your time off! Don't go into labour!" I must have looked a bit horrified because she said "What? It would be safe, right?" I said I still had 12 weeks to go and the baby probably weighed less than 2 pounds and she said "Awwww!" I had to tell her that a baby at 28 weeks is really not so adorable - it's not like a miniature newborn!
nectarine / 2458 posts
@erinbaderin: Right!? And people seem to have some sort of loyalty to an OB office that they liked. When I've expressed the fact that it's disturbing how they just don't seem to give a damn I've had MULTIPLE people say, "but the OBs there are GREAT! Dr. so-and-so did my c-section and you can barely see the scar!"
....ummmmm, you realize that's in response to me saying I'm now having a homebirth, right? LOL. Like, if it came down to it and I absolutely needed a CS that would be great! But me being upset that all their midwives are leaving does not go away because their OBs are good surgeons.
nectarine / 2458 posts
So I met the homebirth midwife on Monday and she was AMAZING! Like, she actually seemed to listen to my story and reasoning for wanting a natural birth and she really seemed to care. And she listened to my husband's concerns (which were mainly related to emergency situations) and addressed all of them. And she's flexible about payment plans so we'll definitely be able to afford it.
So, we're planning for a homebirth! I emailed her yesterday to officially "book" her and when she responded to me she included all the paperwork I have to look over and sign before our next appointment AND information on the abnormal test results I had in the first trimester (I had complained that no one really ever explained what was going on) AND information on UTIs in pregnancy because I had mentioned it was most likely a UTI that kicked me into labor with DS1.
We really couldn't be happier with our decision. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
Next appointment is January 14 and she just comes to my house for my appointment! I don't even have to get dressed!!! hahaha
