March Mamas & Babies: 1/3 Done!

@Adira: Actually right now the night pumping is not too bad compared to the day ones!! The worse thing is pumping at work because it hurts bad after every time. I might transition to formula during the day to keep my sanity and ease the pain. Hopefully you and your LO will be back on track soon with sleep schedule.
@Smurfette: Sorry you are having such a tough time. I have had some rough times too with DH. Luckily I can get some help at night when needed. My mom takes care of LO about once a week and it brings down DH's crankiness level!!
    @travellingbee: Wow inspired!!

@travellingbee: Ahhh!! I'm so impressed!! I tried to see if Xander would sit up today, but he immediately toppled over, haha.

@Smurfette: this sounds so cliche, but by the 3rd-4th day it was really easy to put her down... no more than 5-10 min before she settled on her own. the crib became her cue to sleep and it was like she just knew once she was in there, mama wasn't coming back.

@silver1: Yikes! Pain while pumping sucks!! Any idea what is vausing it? Could the suction be too high? I think if pumping was painful for me, I'd switch to formula too!

@Mrs. High Heels: I can do 3 or 4 days. She went to sleep within 5 mins for her 2nd nap. Only slept 45 mins but at least she went to sleep on her own.

@Smurfette: That sounds like a great nap to me! I don't know how R usually is, but we're lucky if Xander sleeps longer than 30 minutes for his naps! And that's awesome she went down on her own! Hopefully this bodes well for tonight!

  8. Smurfette

@Adira: that is a good nap for her! I just keep reading how 4 month olds should nap 5-6 hours a day. We are no where near that.

I bought her an outfit at a consignment and got ripped off. The blue and stars didn't match. I learned my lesson, look more closely. Oh well it was $2. Good thing I already had these shorts and we had a festive bib.

Happy 4th!! It is pouring here, yuck!

@Smurfette: Xander never gets that much sleep during the day! We're lucky if he gets 2 hours total in naps!

She is so cute!! I love those big eyes of hers!!

@Smurfette: so cute! If Isaac goes in his bed for a nap he doesn't sleep much longer than 30 minutes, but he still mostly will only be held and that is when he will have a longer nap.

@Adira: It feels great to get a few hours sleep in a row, I just hope this continues.

@travellingbee: wow! Way to go on sitting.

    Happy 4th of July!

Ugh ladies, tonight has been soooooo hard. I don't know what's going on with my normally easy-going baby but he has been screaming his head off ALL DAY. He's barely nursed at all and every time I try to put him down to sleep, he screams and screams. I hold and rock him until he's asleep, but as soon as I put him in his crib, he wakes up screaming. It's heartbreaking! I don't know how you ladies have dealt with this for so long. One night and I'm bawling my eyes out!

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Aww, I am sorry. Do you think he is teething? I saw the other thread. Could you sleep with him on your chest? DH and I have found he does better with sleeping with her since he sleeps on his back. Prop up pillows to support your arms. Maybe after an hour and he is in a deep sleep, you can put him down. Did you give him some Tylenol?

  14. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Xander doesn't seem to like being too much on his stomach, so he won't sleep on someone chest unless he's totally vertical. I am wondering if he's teething since he's clearly not acting normal. I haven't given him any tylenol yet, though I definitely should! Maybe next time I feed him, I'll try to give him some. I'm so nervous about his next feeding and him not going back to sleep after...

  15. Smurfette

@Adira: I would let him sleep if he is and see how long he will sleep.

@Adira: I don't now I saw LC before and she said it could be vasospasms(?) and I might be more prone to it. The suction is high but I have to since I can't pump for too long at work.
Maybe you could try putting him on your shoulder to sleep? When my LO wakes up screaming that usually does the trick to calm him down. I am propped on bed with pillows behind my back so I can also relax.
My pics are not syncing so this is the best I have for now Happy 4th!!

@Adira: poor guy and poor you. Not sleeping is not fun. I hope you don't have too rough of a night.

@silver1: Look at all that hair! So cute.

Isaac came so close to rolling back to front today. He was almost there but couldn't get his arm on the other side.

I just did a happy dance as it was 9 pm and he was in his bed asleep. 5 minutes and be woke up crying. Now he is sucking my shoulder, maybe he needs a top up.

I hope we all get good sleeps tonight!

@Smurfette: she's so cute!! that sucks that it didn't match though, but you totally made it work.

@Adira: it does sound like teething/pain to me! i'm sorry you're having a tough night, did it go ok after his next feeding?

  19. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@silver1: I had pain pumping when my suction was too high. And unfortunately, I only have the Mother's Room at my work for 30 minutes at a time and I could definitely pump for longer!! I tend to try to use it for 5-10 minutes extra if I can to pump for longer because I have slow boobs. I don't think I could increase the suction of my pump again... I.remember how painful it can be. Sorry you are dealing with that!!

And OMG!! Look at all his hair!! He's adorable!!

@ALV91711: Our night actually has gone well. I ended up feeding him at 9:30 and he went back to sleep fine and now we're up for the first time (5:00).

Did you end up topping off Isaac? How did it go after that?

@Mrs. High Heels: I ended up giving him some tylenol before his next feeding and I'm not sure if it was because of that or because he was just tired, but he nursed just fine and then fell right back asleep. I was so relieved!

@Smurfette: I didn't see a ton of MOTN posts from you... how was your night?

  20. ALV91711

    pomelo / 5621 posts

@Adira: glad Xander had a normal night. Yes I did top him off and he was in bed asleep by 9:30. Then up at 1 and now 4. I think he woke up at around 3, or maybe it was just me, but if he did he put himself back to sleep.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@ALV91711: Sorry to hear he didn't have any really long stretches, despite being topped off at 9:00. Though if he did wake up at 3:00 and fall back asleep on his own, THAT is awesome!

@Mrs. High Heels: I was seriously mad when I saw the pieces didn't match. Oh well, at least I had something else that worked for the holiday.

@silver1: OMG, look at all that hair. Love it!

@ALV91711: Sorry you had to get up so much

@Adira: Glad that you Xander nursed fine and slept all night.

Last night went 100% better then I was expecting. We started bedtime about 30 mins later then normal since we were at a friend's house. We got home and she was crying nonstop during bath. I was nursing her and I heard her poop. So I had to unswaddle and then she was just talking and smiling in the best mood. So I was nervous she wouldn't go to sleep. I put her in the crib, she talked to herself for a while. Then was fussy for about 20 mins and went to sleep. She slept till 1230, I went and moved her since she was at the end of the crib and I couldn't see her face on the monitor. I think she was still half asleep. She fussed for 10 mins and was back asleep. Woke up 45 mins later, fussed 10 mins, and was back asleep till 515 this morning. I heard her a couple times coughing but she didn't wake up.

I didn't sleep great, kept thinking she was going to wake up. My boobs were like rocks this morning cause they had gotten use to her eating all night.

    But we learned
    1) She is a smarty and is catching on, crib means sleep
    2) She is a mover, and likes the bottom of the crib the best.
    3) She can go all night without eating.

I feel SO much better mentally. I am hoping after this weekend, we won't even have the wake up anymore.

@Smurfette: OMG!!! Sooooo happy to hear about your improved night!!!! It's great to know she can go all night without eating! And I'm not surprised you didn't sleep well. You were probably on edge, waiting for her to start crying! Hopefully tonight goes well too!

@Smurfette: That's awesome. The best I get is one 'night' waking and one really early morning waking.

Strangely enough, despite all the fireworks going off, Em slept from 7:30 to 11:00 then from 11:00 to 4:00; we snuggle slept from 4:00 until 7:00 when big brother H started fussing. I went into his room to find him perched, butt in the air, on his crib rails. I'm so glad DH has to deal with -that- rude awakening for two days! Maybe then he'll understand what it's like.

  25. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@NaturallyCathy: Oh my gosh, finding H like that must be so scary!!! I am NOT looking forward to when Xander is climbing like that! And it sounds like Em got some decent sleep last night with only a couple wake-ups! Not bad!

So while Xander has, in general, been great at going to bed at night, he has been pretty terrible with naps. He requires all sorts or rocking and shushing and patting to get him down. So this morning I decided to Ferberize him! I started to get him ready for his nap 10 minutes early by going into his room, turning on the white noise, and just rocking him in the rocking chair. Then I put him in his crib and walked away. He fussed for a bit and then started full-fledged crying. I went back in after 5 minutes and just patted him and shushed him and then walked out again while he was still crying. 3 more minutes of crying and then suddenly, silence! I was all WTF. He was asleep! Hazzah!! Now to see if it will work for the rest of his naps today. Although... I think he's getting vaccinations today, so who knows how that will affect him.

  26. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@NaturallyCathy: I would have had a heart attack finding him like that. Are you moving to a toddler bed?

@Adira: Good job Xander! It is like WTF when they get so quiet much earlier then you think it would take. I told day care to try swaddling and putting her in the crib for a nap today.

ETA, totally jealous you are off today! Are you feeling better?

  27. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: I wonder if I should start telling daycare to put him in his crib for naps. I know he sleeps better/longer in a crib. I think they only put him down if he's already falling asleep... when I picked him up on Tuesday, he had been up for THREE HOURS. But he was still in a good mood, so who knows! He promptly fell asleep in the car though. I'm not sure if I should try to get them to make him take naps after two hours of awake or not. If he's still happy and doesn't seem over-tired, maybe it doesn't matter?

I THINK I'm feeling better. I was able to eat a decent meal last night without feeling nauseous! I'm still kind of nervous about eating things, but I feel mostly normal. Not sure if I mentioned this already or not, but Hubs is ALSO sick. He has something totally different than me though - sore throat and congested, just like the last couple colds we both had! We're trying to avoid each other so we don't pass on what we both have, haha. Although we've both been handling Xander, so there's probably no hope.

  28. Mrs. Grizzly Bear

    GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts

@Smurfette: Our crib converts so all we need to do is get the toddler rails. Unfortunately they aren't available until 7/18 and then it will take 8-10 days for them to get here from California. So no toddler rails/bed until nearly the end of July! Until then, we don't really know what to do. We just keep finding him on the corner of the crib, attempting to climb out, and we just keep picking him up and putting him back in or putting his feet on the ground.

  29. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@NaturallyCathy: I'm so curious how long he's been attempting to get out before you guys discover him and rescue him from himself! Do you think he's stuck on the side for a while, nervous about going one way or the other? Or do you just always hear him and go in when he's just gotten to the top?

  30. Mrs. Grizzly Bear

    GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts

@Adira: I think this is what happens - he decides that we're taking too long to get him for whatever reason, then he starts climbing. Sometimes he starts whining when he stretches his leg up to the crib rail and that's when we go get him. He'll have just the toes and most of his foot over the rail, leg stretched up. If we take too long in his little mind or if he feels really brave, he doesn't start whining until he's already on the rails. He'll usually whine for a few minutes, which gives us enough time to get to him. I'm not sure if he's stuck or if he just doesn't want to try and slide down the side of his crib. It's all very... interesting. He's quicker to do it as the week's gone on. He first started doing this Sunday but now, it doesn't matter when I put him down, he's always trying to get out! I have no idea what to do.

  31. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@NaturallyCathy: haha, smart kid!! I guess if you are really concerned about his safety, you could just get rid of the crib until you get the rails and have him sleep on a mattress on the floor. Not sure how well that would go over though.

@Adira: There are many times R is up for 3 hours. I am hoping now she will start napping better. I need to tell them to not let her be up for more then 2 hours. Glad that you were able to eat something.

@NaturallyCathy: That's right, I remember reading that in the other thread. I hate that you have to wait that long.

    @travellingbee: Whoa!! That's awesome! I'm so impressed.

@silver1: That hair-so cute!! I'm so jealous. We are wickedly bald over here!

@NaturallyCathy: OMG, I would have a heart attack! I'm not looking forward to those days!

@Smurfette: SO glad to hear you are getting more sleep! It sounds like R is taking to sleep training as well as E & F did! I hope tonight will be awesome for you! As always, her pics are so cute!

@ALV91711: I am in 100% sympathy with you on the seeing family and trying to get them to sleep thing. When I hand you the baby after swaddling and say they need to go to bed, that does not mean it's time to tickle . . .

We had a great day yesterday, & I'm so glad I only have one day at work before getting to spend the weekend with the boys. DH's parents and sisters are staying with us until Sunday, so they are keeping the boys today. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly. This is the first time either grandparents have kept them for more than an hour or two without us being in the house (they've done all the night wakings a couple of times, though). For some reason, I'm a little nervous, even though they've been in daycare for two weeks already. I guess just because it's a different situation.

Wednesday, we went by they new daycare we will be switching to in August. It was so refreshing to have the teachers actually engage us in conversation, tell us how excited they were about the boys, etc. Our current daycare teachers never even introduced themselves and barely talk to us when we ask direct questions. Also, the room was full of playmats, jumperoos, exersaucers, toys, etc. Our current one just has a bunch of nap nannies, boppies, and one playmat, so I think the new daycare really will be much better for them. So happy.

  34. Mrs. Grizzly Bear

    GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts

@Adira: That's one of those where it's easy to suggest but very hard to do in reality. If you don't start out with a bed on the floor, there's no good way to get them sleeping that way. I am very concerned for his safety but to do away with the crib would mean clearing out the room entirely - no bookshelves, no toys, no foam tiles to keep him from getting further bruises, etc. it would be him in an empty room.

Even though he's starting to climb out of the crib, it's still a safe place. He knows he's supposed to stay in it so when we put him in for bed and naps, he doesn't fight it. He knows what he's supposed to do. He only tries to climb out when he's awake and normally whines for one of us to come get him when he's stuck. It's not climbing out in defiance, just in boredom.

Ugh, looks like I'm in for another rough day. Xander only nuesed one side at 9:00 and seemed in a perfectly good mood, but at 10:30 (15 minutes after I started pumping the side he hadn't nursed on) he started screaming uncontrollably. I gave him some tylenol incase it's teething pain and am now nursing him (not on the side I pumped from... He threw a fit when he tried to nurse from that one).

I have another clogged duct. She just isn't nursing as long and I don't think getting everything out.

@Smurfette: Yeah, I guess I'll have to try a bottle if we continue to have issues nursing. I'm just nervous about doing that because I know I can't pump out as much as he could get and I'm already concerned about my supply.

Ugh, sorry about the clogged duct!! Maybe you need to pump after she nurses to really try to empty them?

@Adira: I just hate pumping, so I don't want to do it at night. But I am going to have too. I still have one in the right side that started Wednesday. Good thing I have a hands free bra for pumping, since now I will have to massage both boobs.
