Hey ladies. I hope that everyone is having a nice night. I think that my kiddo has his first cold (or, minimally, his first cough). He kept waking himself up from naps by coughing. He even woke up at 9pm crying, when he normally sleeps straight through from 8pm-7am.
Anyone have any advice or suggestions for a first cold?
Little man is 23 weeks old today, and he is otherwise doing really well. He's a big boy, now 19 lbs. Here's a bonus photo of a new development. Granted, he tipped not too long afterwards.

OMG... 9 hours 40 mins of sleep. I can't believe it! He did wake up briefly at 10:30, but was able to fall back to sleep on his own. He seems pretty hungry now though!!
Despite the success, I'm not sure I'm ready to give up our 9:00 feeding... I really missed it last night... Not sure what I'll do tonight.

@Adira: That is awesome that he made it through! Can he teach Isaac how to sleep?!?!
@mole: That is awesome that he sat up, however short it was.

@ALV91711: Haha, I wish we could help you!! I don't even know why Xander's such a good sleeper!

I think Xander must've missed me too. He's been nursing for longer than normal!

Okay, now I'm not having much luck with my new pump. Tried pumping at the same settings I used last night, but after 15 minutes, all I had were a few drops. Hooked my old pump back up and am currently using that and getting so much more out. Not sure what the issue is.

@travellingbee: How did last night go??
@dojo: Did he sleep all night in his crib?
@mole: Nose frida and humidifier were our life saver for the cold. We still use the humidifier every night to hold off any stuffy nose since she gets it all the time from day care.
@Adira: Woo hoo! Go Xander!! I can understand if you don't want to give it up. That is weird about the pump this morning. What setting to you have it on? I find that I get more out if I leave it on high the whole time.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: So it doesn't have numbers, but I set the suction/speed dial thing to around 4, which is what I had it on last night. I certainly felt like it should be working, but it wasn't, so not sure what was up. Maybe my body just needs to get used to it? I did to start to letdown with it, but then when it switched to the slower rhythm, not a whole lot was coming out. I tried going back to the fast pace, but it didn't work. After 15 minutes and only a few drops, I gave up. I was able to get 3oz out using my old pump. So frustrating! Especially since it seemed to work so well last night!

So last night went really well. Our goal with this training is to limit night feedings to 2 and for him to self soothe. Here's what happened:
7:00- put L down in crib after nursing to drowsy. He freaked out but after about 10 minutes I picked him up and he spit up on me and then calmed right down. I put him down and he rolled to his side and fell asleep.
8:10 woke up again. I went in and patted his back. He cried for about 2 minutes, then fell asleep on side again. We had the towels in to pre vent rolling to tummy.
12:30ish. Crying . Somehow he got on his tummy anyway. I wasn't sure what I'd do in this situation. I tried to pat and calm him but it wasn't happening, so I tried to turn him into his back. He hit madder and went back to his belly again. Still hysterical. I picked him up and he calmed and started rooting for milk. I put him down- freak out. Pick up-- rooting. So I fed him. He was drowsy when I put him down again. He fussed a minute, rolled to his tummy and fell asleep facedown. I was terrified to let him sleep that way!! He scooted all the wAy to the top of the crib where I couldn't see his head on the monitor and stayed face down. Until 7 when I woke him. 7!!!!!!
Omg he slept 11 1/2 hours with only the 8 and 12 wakings! No pacifier!!! First night ever!! I'm calling this a smashing success!! Here he is face down on the monitor lol
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
Oh and I forgot to say that on our trip we realized that he can sit in a highchair!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@travellingbee: WOW!!!! What a great night!!!! So glad it was such a success!!! Although that's funny that he totally scooted out or your line of sight! Our monitor can swivel, so if Xander moves, I just adjust it so I can see him. Although he rarely moves.
And that's awesome he can sit in a high chair!!! I haven't tried with Xander, but he's so wobbly even when I'm supporting him sitting, so I don't think I can put him in a high chair or anything like that unless it was totally cushioned all around him to keep him upright!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Oh, I forgot to mention! I told Hubs about how I went to see an LC yesterday and Xander only drank 4oz and he goes: "So what you're saying is that you're not producing enough and you're starving our son!" He was totally joking though. I think.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@travellingbee: so glad that last night went so well!!!! R does that all the time, moves so we can't see her on the monitor. Once I know she is asleep, I go move her. We haven't tried a high chair yet. I so want too cause she hates to sit in the car seat cause little Ms Nosey can't see everything. So we always have to hold her. She will be much easier when we can sit her in one.
@Adira: my pump is different but try putting on high till the milk comes out and the you can move to low or medium. Or maybe start a thread on that pump and see what everyone says. Funny about you DH!!
R fell asleep in the car slept all through Target. Just got to my Aunts for a shower, so she will have taken a hour and half nap!!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Yeah, maybe I need to up the suction! I think I also need different flanges because I feel like it's sucking too much of my aerola in and it feels weird. But maybe it's just because I'm used to my old pump.
And that's awesome about R's nap!!! She'll probably be in a pretty good mood after having such a great nap!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: she has been smiling at everyone. So much to see she didn't even realize it was time to eat!!

@Smurfette: haha, that's awesome!!! Glad to hear she's having a good time!

@travellingbee: Wow! That is an awesome night. I hope he keeps it up. We haven't tried a high chair yet.
@Smurfette: That is a great nap.
@Adira: I hope you figure out the new pump and it works for you.
Well, last night wasn't horrible. Asleep at 9:45 and awake at 7. He woke up three times to nurse. So he didnt wake up extra times just because.

@mole: What a great sitter! Even if it's not for too long! We are in the midst of our first sickness too - we use a humidifier at night an try to just keep his nose cleared as much as possible. I also like using boogie wipes to wipe his nose and face off. Hopefully he will be feeling better soon!
@travellingbee: That sounds great! Glad that the night went well for you! What is the method you said you were using? Sleep lady? Ugghh we need to figure out our sleep since I am getting a little jealous of all you ladies getting good nights sleep
@adira: That's weird about your pump - maybe give it another go and see if the same thing happens later. I have had an odd session or two where I wasn't able to get much without any real reason. I usually have mine just set on the low setting. I'm not sure about numbers but I basically just turn it on and a little higher. Maybe if you try to continue with the fast setting by pressing the let down button until you get more coming out or have to tried compressions while pumping?
@smurfette: We did not make it all night in the crib I am pretty annoyed about it too. It wasn't going all that well from the beginning but I think he just needs to adjust.
Ok so here's how our night went:
7:15 Asleep after normal bedtime routine and nursing until almost asleep.
8:30 Awake and fussing. Went in and held him and patted his back gave him a pacifier and he went back to sleep.
9:00 Awake again. Wouldn't go back to sleep with DH picking up and patting him so I nursed him back to sleep.
11:00 Awake again but went back to sleep with some patting and the pacifier.
12:30 We had just gone to bed maybe around midnight and he was awake again so I asked DH to go get him and see if he'd go back to sleep. Minutes later DH comes back in our room with Liam and puts him down in the cosleeper after complaining that he is tired and sick. HELLO I am sick too... and probably more tired than him. We argue a little and then I give up and just nurse Liam back to sleep and let him sleep with me in the bed. One brief wake up at around 3 but he went back to sleep and then was up again at about 6:30.
I'm in a crabby mood now. DH didn't want to get up this morning because he's tired. So I was the one up at 6:30 with baby. blah.

@dojo: Yeah we used a modified Sleep Lady Shuffle. I say modified because I really want him to learn to sleep on his own without the paci that I keep having to replace, (and deal with the rolling onto his tummy!) but I won't let him just cry if I can see he is hungry. So I did feed him when he was clearly hungry. I don't need him to STTN, necessarily-- just need longer chunks of sleep. I am happy to get up and feed him once or twice... I found the Sleep Lady plan to be the most gentle. Sorry your night was not good.
pomelo / 5621 posts
@travellingbee: I agree, longer chunks of sleep would be nice. I was just reading a bit of the sleep lady shuffle and I like the sounds of it. I will have to do some more reading on it.
persimmon / 1223 posts
@travellingbee: I will have to check it out. I feel the same way that I am ok to get up once but just a longer chunk of sleep would be better!

R hasn't pooped all day. She usually goes multiple times. Scared this is going to mean a blow out tonight.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Ugh, today has been a disaster! Xander has only taken ONE short nap today and has been awake and fussy since 11:30! Feeding him now and I HOPE he'll go to bed okay, but I'm not optimistic. I wonder if this is because of the missed feeding last night, his rash, or maybe he's teething. Whatever it is, I just hope he's able to sleep tonight!!
@Smurfette: Uh oh!! I HOPE there isn't a blow out in your future!!!
@dojo: Sorry your night didn't go well. My husband is kind of a wimp when it comes to sleep. He'll do anything if it means he can go back to sleep sooner. And I can't remember the last time he got up in the morning with the baby!! I always have to!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@dojo: Men!!! I agree with @Adira: they will just do anything to get sleep at the moment. I hope tonight goes better.
@Adira: poor little dude!!! He just wouldn't go to sleep? I hope goes good for you.
Took R swimming tonight. She wasn't sure what it think she was ok standing up in the lite area but didn't want to sit in it. She did look cute in her bathing suit, hat, and sunglasses.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Well, Xander didn't even give me an opportunity to skip his 9:00 feeding. He just woke up hungry!
@Smurfette: Yeah, he just wouldn't sleep! We'd put him down for a nap and he'd just play for 20 minutes and then start screaming. Nothing we did would calm him down except giving up on the nap and bringing him out of his room. Luckily he went to bed with minimal fuss, though he's up now to eat.
Oh my gosh! R sounds so cute in her swim gear! Did you get a picture? We only tried to dip Xander in a lake and it was too cold, so we didn't have much luck. I'd love to try a pool!
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@Smurfette: really? L only goes every couple of days. Dr. Said its fairly normal for breastfed babies... I'm kind of glad but he does have big ones!!
@Adira: so sorry about Xander's rash! poor baby!
We're on night 2. He was laying in the crib playing for about 10 minutes. Then started crying. I tried to soothe but he wasn't having it. DH picked him up and he was hysterical for about 3 minutes. Then he decided to put him down and he just stopped., rolled over and fell asleep. So not bad. Hopefully the night is good again! Fingers crossed!

@travellingbee: Fingers crossed for you tonight!
Some days she goes once but most it is twice at least. Friday she went three times at day care, and twice it leaked on her outfit they were so big.
@Adira: glad that he went to bed easily!!
I didn't get a good picture of her when sitting in the water with DH. The dog started coming around and I was afraid I would drop my phone in the water.
But here are a couple. Sorry to those on Instagram and you already saw!

Ugh, my mom was so annoying tonight. My parents came over for dinner and she was talking to me about Xander's eating and how much I feed him and she suggested as a compromise to Hubs, I could start Xander on solids now. I said that I wanted to wait because that was the recommendation and I tried to explain about babies guts and stuff and she basically said I was just being stubborn. Then she implied that I wasn't feeding him enough and I wasn't listening to what everyone who bottle feeds him were telling me! I even told her about my LC appointment and how Xander ate less from me than he gets at daycare and was fine, and that didn't convince her! She even said something about daycare calling social services on me because I'm not letting them feed a hungry baby!!! I was like "WTF are you talking about??? I told them to feed him when he's hungry and they still feed him every 3 hours, so he must not be THAT hungry!" I was so pissed! She was basically saying that I was just being stubborn and that since daycare and Hubs want to give him more food, I should, even though I know he doesn't need it. The whole conversation SUCKED. Ugh, she was sooooooooo supportive when I was struggling with breastfeeding and thinking about quitting, and now that I'm gung-ho about breastfeeding and sticking with it and following the WHO recommendation for starting solids, she thinks I'm being stubborn! WTF! She ALSO thinks that Xander being in a low percentile for weight is an indication that he needs more food, just like Hubs does. Apparently my brother and I were both big babies, so I guess smaller babies are underfed in her opinion! UGH!!!!
pomelo / 5621 posts
@travellingbee: Thanks for the link, I'll read through it. I hope tonight's sleep goes good.
@Adira: Oh my! I can't believe your mom actually said that to you. I would cry. Well I hope that Xander sleeps good tonight for you after not napping well.
@Smurfette: She is so adorable! She looks so serious. Isaac usually poops at least once a day, but he has gone a couple days without one too. Kind of freaked me out at the time.
Isaac was a trooper today. Went to my cousins wedding. It was outdoors and we have a lot of family who hasn't really seen him. He got passed around a bunch. Then this evening we went to the reception for a couple hours, where he was passed around some more. We left right after dinner as he was starting to get cranky. I think it was awesome that they got him a rattle for the reception. All the other kids got a goodie bag and they included him. Now he is winding down and I'm hoping will go to bed soon.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: Why is everyone giving you such a hard time??? Some babies are just smaller. Not all babies are going to have chunk and that doesn't mean they aren't healthy. Good for you for sticking to your guns! I would be livid at my Mom for saying day care would call social service.
@ALV91711: that was really nice that got him a rattle. Glad that it went well taking him. Hope you are getting sleep!!
I don't know what is going with R. She woke up around 9 fussed some and went back to bed. Woke up at 130, fussing and after 20 mins turned into crying. I checked her diaper she hasn't pooped yet. But she doesn't wake up this early to eat. And she isn't sucking really so I don't even think she is eating that much.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@ALV91711: @Smurfette: Ugh, then she brought it up later at dinner and said that I was stubbornly sticking to the recommendations and I said I wanted to hold off on solids for as long as possible and that I was scared of the mess and changes to his poop, ad she basically said I was being neglectful and starving him!! I tried to tell her that solids before one are just for fun and she just stared at me like I was crazy. It was so frustrating.
@ALV91711: Sounds like everyone really enjoyed seeing Isaac today!! I hope he sleeps well for you!
@Smurfette: I saw you posted in the middle of the night and thought "Noooooooo!!! Why is she up???" I wonder what is up with R! Were you able to get her back to sleep okay? I hope the rest of your night was okay.
So I had to guilt Hubs into changing Xander's diaper this morning. I had already asked him to be the one to get up with Xander in the morning so I could actually get some sleep for once, so he didn't want to help me now since he has to get up later. I was just like "Well, I have to be up for at least an hour now to feed and pump and I get up at 5:00 or earlier all week and I don't ask you to help then, so it would be nice to get a little extra help for these morning feeds on the weekend." Finally he did get up and do it, but it's annoying I have to guilt him into it!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: the worse part was I couldn't get back to sleep till after 3. Now she is up nursing again. I hope she goes back to sleep for awhile. Hopefully you get to sleep in for a good stretch. DH got up yesterday with R and let me sleep but it was 30 mins before she was hungry. I am making him get up this morning
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Ugh, sounds like you're not getting a ton of sleep!! I hope you are able to get a decent stretch after you nurse her! Xander's been attached to my boobs for over an hour now and I still need to pump. I'm never going to get to go back to bed and even if I do, I'll have to feed him again at 8:30/9:00. I miss sleeping in...
pomelo / 5621 posts
@Smurfette: That is not good that she was up so much. I hope DH took her this morning so you cold get some extra sleep.
@Adira: I can't believe she wouldn't drop it. Xander is growing and that is the important part. When you start solids is really none of her business. Hopefully DH starts to be more helpful on the weekend mornings.
So far we are having a good night. In bed asleep at 9.30. Up to nurse at 11:15 and now at 3:15. This is his longest stretch in a while. I hope he does another long one.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
So last night was pretty good. Asleep by 745, up to feed at 1:00am and 6:00am. I can live with that.
@Adira: man... If the dr. thinks he's fine, and the LC does, what's the issue?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: she slept till 7 and I slept till a little before 8. She put up a good fight for her first nap but she lost!
@ALV91711: Great news. Lets hope he keeps that up.
@travellingbee: awesome!! Glad that method is working for you.
apricot / 338 posts
@Smurfette: haha about the good fight R looks so cute in swimsuit and sunglasses!!
@Adira: Ugh sorry your mom is not supportive. Usually I just stop such conversations as saying I(mom) know best (and in your case pedi and LC agree too!!) and there is unspoken hint that they might not get frequent access to baby. Of course I would never do that. I have medela pump too and I just start it with letdown and after a minute it automatically switches to slower speed and then I slowly increase suction a few notches and pump for 20 min. I get about 2-3 ounces good side and 1-2 on other side.
@travellingbee: Yay for good night sleep!! My LO has pretty similar schedule this past week. The best thing is he doesn't wake up crying I don't mind a little fussiness but full on crying is just too much to handle in sleep deprived state!
@ALV91711: Wow he is a trooper being so great at wedding!! hope you had a good sleep.
@dojo: men!! they are so difficult my DH is same when he is sick and tired and he wants to sleep. Doesn't matter if Im sick and baby still needs to be changed and fed and burped.
@mole: Wow thatz awesome he is sitting!!
