March Mamas & Babies: 1/3 Done!

@travellingbee: That is what we did. We had bottle bootcamp the weekend before we started day care. One cause she wasn't great at taking a bottle but also to get a better idea of how many ozs we needed to send.

  2. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: I don't think eating 7 times is too much, but if you think she's not really eating much in the middle of the night one, maybe you can work on dropping it? I'm sure you're already doing that though, haha. Do you try offering her a pacifier instead? Afraid I don't have a lot of advice if that doesn't work.

  3. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: She still won't take one. I wait 30 mins before I go in there. She starts out fussy and whinny but usually within 30 mins she is full on crying.

  4. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: What a bummer!! It sounds like she probably just needs a little help falling back asleep and she's using you as her pacifier. Maybe you could try going in immediately before she's full on crying and see if she'll take a pacifier then? Maybe if you get to her before she's really awake and upset it would work?

  5. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: I was thinking that this morning. She can put herself back to sleep but lately I think I do wait too long to go in there. Going to do 10 mins tonight and then see if I can get her back asleep without eating. I wish she would go back to sleeping till 5 and then nursing!

  6. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: I think if you can maybe help her fall back asleep without eating, she'll hopefully get better and better. Xander was doing a good long stretch, but then suddenly was waking up in the middle of the night! The first night, it was really hard to get him back to sleep, but then the next was easier, and last night he actually woke up, fussed, and fell back to sleep all on his own. So hopefully you'll start having some good luck with R!!

@Adira: Yeah I think that is what we are going to have to do. This weekend, I guess. He starts next week. I'm getting so nervous!

He slept a bit better last night. (Although I didn't-- stuffy and sore throat = not very good sleep) He went to sleep a little before 8 and woke at 930 and 345. That's it! Wish he'd do that every night!

  8. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@travellingbee: Yeah, bottle bootcamp is definitely helpful, although it sucks feeding your baby bottles all weekend right before you're able to leave them!!! I just wanted to nurse him soooooooo badly because I knew we weren't going to have as much time together anymore, but it definitely was worth it to know how much to send and feel confident about it!

Glad he gave you some decent stretches of sleep, even though you're sick and so it wasn't as restful! Hopefully he'll continue doing something similar for you!

  9. travellingbee

    hostess / papaya / 10219 posts

So here is what I don't get: When I do a weighed feeding, he usually gets about 4-5 ounces from me. But when I give him a bottle, he never ever takes more than 4 ounces. I just struggled to get him to take 3 from the bottle. He is happy to drink it but just becomes disinterested after about 2 ounces. Why would this be?

  10. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@travellingbee: Have you tried giving the bottle after a break? Day care had to do this with R in the beginning. She would drink like half and wait like 10-15 mins and then she would drink the rest.

  11. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@travellingbee: How many weighed feeds have you done? Were they at similar times that you're offering the bottle? I know babies vary how much they drink at different times (Xander drinks more in the morning and seems to drink less in the evening, for example).

  12. travellingbee

    hostess / papaya / 10219 posts

@Smurfette: Yeah, he usually will take a little more but he starts playing with the nipple and shoving the bottle around/trying to hold it himself etc.
@Adira: We have a scale at home so we weigh him often. Yes it definitely varies. He will eat as much as 7 ounces from me in the am and like 3 sometimes in the afternoon. But I can NEVER get him to take more than 3ish in the bottle. I think he is distracted by it because it is different. I think we just need to get him used to it, maybe.

L sat for a full 3 minutes just now. Playing with his toys and everything. He can bend down and pick stuff up and steady himself when he sits back up! Yay! I can't wait for him to be totally steady!

Also, he's been obsessed with cups lately. Tries to grab them out of my hand constantly. So I let him drink BM from a cup a bit ago. He was so cute guzzling it down. Of course he spilled some because he kept trying to grab it from me. But it was adorable how excited he got!

  13. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@travellingbee: 3 mins! That is awesome.

If he likes cups could you put the BM in a sippy cup instead of a bottle?

  14. travellingbee

    hostess / papaya / 10219 posts

@Smurfette: Probably but I'm a little worried that if gets that regularly he might ween because it is so fast of a flow. Hmm...

  15. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@travellingbee: Oh yeah, good call. I would just keep trying this week/weekend. Sounds like he is already doing better then R was and she still did great eating her first day.

    @Adira: @silver1: @ALV91711: Thank you ladies!

@Adira: Sorry about your pumping output. I feel like that kind of stuff changes for me day to day. Probably has to do with hydration, how much I eat, how much baby is eating. Hopefully it'll be back up again soon. I ordered the More Milk pills on BabySteals the other day because I remember you use those? I did force myself to have oatmeal for breakfast one day. Yesterday people were telling me that drinking beer does the same thing. Makes sense - I've heard that before.

@travellingbee: He sat unassisted for 3 min.? Wow! Way to go! We saw the ped yesterday and he told me 8-9 months was normal for that. He's going to be crawling in no time! And that' amazing about the cup thing!

So, yesterday K finally rolled from tummy to back! She actually rolled across (a small part) of her room, while I was trying to put stuff away! Hasn't done it since, but I'm working on it! Got this hilarious pic of her while I was trying to photograph her rolling. My lil roaring girl. hehehe
We went to the ped for her "drool rash" yesterday. The ped told me to use Aveeno Baby Eczema cream. Her face does look a little better today, but I used it all over her body instead of coconut oil last night. Today, she has red patches on different parts of her body! Argh!

This board is getting a little overwhelming... let's do a 5 month check in with ALL the mamas? I'll start!

    LO's name: Kaitlyn
    Age: 5 months yesterday!
Weight: Got measured yesterday! 13lbs 13oz.
    Length: 25.3"
Recent milestones: Rolling tummy to back, rolling in her sleep (ugh), trying to kiss me (with pretty good accuracy most of the time), grabbing toes for a few weeks now.
Milestone you're most looking forward to: Sitting upright and being able to roll back over to back when she wants to.
How's feeding going: EBF and going strong! We won't be introducing solids until 6 months.
How's sleep going: Night time sleep is going well! Last night was tough as she has started roll onto her tummy and gets frustrated and wakes herself up. We're still averaging 1-2 night time wake-up/feedings in ~12 hour period of sleep. Naps are getting a little better. I try to aim for 4 (20 min. or as much as I can get) naps per day. She's still a true cat-napper though and fights daytime sleep.
What is your favorite trait about your LO? Her smiles and laughing. She is just such a happy and sweet baby. I aslo love that she's been doing like a real HUG around my shoulder and arm when I hold her lately.
What is something silly that your LO does? Lately, open mouth face plants on my cheeks and mouth.
WOHM, WAHM, SAHM or on mat leave? SAHM

  17. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@travellingbee: Hmm... yeah, maybe just give it to him more and see how he does? Maybe if you do the bottle bootcamp and give it to him all day, he'll be more used to it and give you a better clue as to how much he eats. Of course, maybe he's just not all that interested in drinking from the bottle and will end up not drinking a ton at daycare and make it up when he's with you!

3 minutes is AWESOME!!! Go Liam!! Xander actually has gotten better at sitting up too, although probably not 3 minutes good! I had him sitting between my legs and he could bend forward to grab a toy and then sit back up, which was pretty impressive to me. But if he goes sideways at all, he topples right over!

That's funny about the cup! I have no idea if Xander's interested in stuff like that or not! We don't really eat in front of him that much because we tend to eat after he goes to bed. Ooops?

@shopaholic: Do you think K might be allergic to the Aveeno? Xander is, which sucks because it's what EVERYONE recommends! Also, K is ADORABLE!!!!!!

  18. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: We eat after R goes to bed too. I start putting her down at 630, so that is too early for me to eat. Plus the time I have with her I would rather play then her watch me eat. I will worry about changing it once she is eating regular meals and then do family dinners.

    LO's name: Xander
    Age: 5 months 1 week
    Weight: 15 lbs 2 oz
Length: 26" as of July 5th
Recent milestones: FINALLY rolled back to front ONCE, practicing sitting up unassisted, finally can bear weight on his legs for more than 2 seconds (though still not for very long), loves to eat his toes, LOVES blowing raspberries! Also... it's possible he's reached out for me to pick him up... though I'm not positive about this one... could just be a coincidence.
Milestone you're most looking forward to: Sitting up unassisted, being able to roll on demand (or maybe just skip to crawling), reaching for me on purpose!
How's feeding going: EBF but having pumping problems lately, grrrr. Starting solids soon!!!
How's sleep going: Naps are still pretty inconsistent (with him pretty much not napping at all last weekend), but he's STTN from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. every night and it's rare he wakes up, so that's going good!
What is your favorite trait about your LO? Him smiling and laughing at me! Also when he calms down as soon as I pick him up, I know he loves me!
What is something silly that your LO does? He kicks AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE when trying to change his diaper! Also, I think he's trying to break his crib - he likes to lift his legs and SLAM them down over and over again!
WOHM, WAHM, SAHM or on mat leave? WOHM and missing my baby!

  20. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Yeah, I'm the same way! I'm thinking once we introduce solids, what we'll do is I'll just nurse him early (5:30 instead of 6:00), and then have dinner at 6:30, and then hopefully have him in bed by 7:30. But it doesn't leave much time for playing. Unless you count playing with the food, haha.

    LO's name: Reagan
Age: will be 5 months on Sunday
Weight: 13.1 lbs on Aug 1st
    Length: 24 5/8 on July 11th
Recent milestones: getting better about sitting up unassisted, grabbing her feet (tried to put them in her mouth last night), and she has laughed a couple times.
Milestone you're most looking forward to: Rolling across the room. She can roll tummy to back but I have only seen her do it once. and sitting up unassisted.
How's feeding going: Mostly all BF, sending one bottle of formula to day care cause I can't pump the 20oz she is eating there. I am pretty sure we are going to start to wean day time at 6 months. Stick with morning and night for another month. I want to be boob free by 9 months.
How's sleep going: Night time is pretty good, about 12 hours with one wake up. Sometimes 2. She can STTN and I am ready for her to do it every night. Naps are still pretty much 30-45 mins. She is getting better about them at day care since sending a sound machine.
What is your favorite trait about your LO? Her smile and big eyes. I love how she smiles at DH, especially cause I know he is afraid she is going to forget about him since he is gone all week.
What is something silly that your LO does? She loves to grab my hair lately, but that isn't silly, just hurts. So I would have to say when she stuffs both her hands in her mouth at the same time.
WOHM, WAHM, SAHM or on mat leave? WOHM I miss her so much but also know I am not meant to be a SAHM

Took this on Saturday while my friend was holding her after we finished swimming.

@Smurfette: OMG, I LOVE that picture of her!!! So friggin' cute!!!!

So I think I was able to pump a reasonable amount at work. I got 11 oz out for the day. I usually get 12 oz at work, but my last pump session was 1.5 hours earlier, so I'm assuming that's why I'm down an ounce. Although I'm not liking that I've had to add a pump session in the day because I have to use vacation time for it. Bleh. Also, I'm still down 4 oz for the day!!! I'm not sure I'll be able to get 4 oz out after nursing, but I'm going to see if I can power pump for an hour after nursing him at 6:00 and just hope for the best!!

    LO's name: Lukas
Age: will be 5 months next Thursday
    Weight: 17lbs 4 oz
Length: not sure. Last appt he was 26 1/2, but I think he's close to 27in.
Recent milestones: laughing, sitting unassisted (on average he can sit for between 10-30 seconds before getting too excited!), rolling all over now, raspberries, toes in mouth, grabbing EVERYTHING, first tooth looks about ready to pop through
Milestone you're most looking forward to: Sitting completely steady on his own, hugging and kissing
NOT looking forward to solids and crawling!
How's feeding going: Still EBF and it is going well. We'll see when I go back to work next week. My goal is to BF for 1 year.
How's sleep going: Naps are pretty good and night time sleep is still fairly terrible. Knock on wood it was better last night.
What is your favorite trait about your LO? He is so silly. He loves blowing raspberries and biting/sucking his toes. He raises his little eyebrows when he smiles and laughs. So cute.
What is something silly that your LO does? See above.
WOHM, WAHM, SAHM or on mat leave? WOHM as of next week!

@Adira: I still think that sucks you have to use vacation time to pump. I hope you can get enough tonight. Try and not stress about it. I know easier said than done. I am haven't been worried about it today and with the 3ozs I had left from yesterday I think I can send all 4 bottles of BM tomorrow instead of one formula.

    LO's name: Liam
Age: about 5.5 months (24 weeks) crazy!
Weight: 15.22 lbs when he was weighed about a week ago
    Length: 25 inches last week
Recent milestones: He has rolled a couple times from back to tummy but not consistently and he seems to have forgotten about rolling from tummy to back. He's starting to get a little better at sitting (with some assistance) and getting really strong in his legs (he will stand supporting all his weight if I just hold his hands to balance)
Milestone you're most looking forward to: Being able to sit on his own and starting solids (thought I'm kind of nervous about it!)
How's feeding going: Still EBF. We set up our highchair and I bought some spoons/containers etc to get ready to start solids. He nurses in the morning and night and takes 3 (sometimes 4) 5 oz bottles during the day. Daycare started asking us about starting solids... eeek!
How's sleep going: eh... He is great at bed time but then lately he's been waking early between 10-12 (where he used to sleep until 1 or 2) and then again around 3 and then 5 or 5:30 up for the day. He has been sick though so I think his cough may have been waking him up. He has difficulty going back to bed without nursing (even though I don't think he is eating much when he wakes up in the MOTN.)
What is your favorite trait about your LO? He is such a happy baby! He is always smiling and giggling (when he thinks we are funny)
What is something silly that your LO does? I love it when he will give us a huge smile and then get a little shy and turn his head as though he is feeling bashful. He also gets really excited about splashing in the bath.
WOHM, WAHM, SAHM or on mat leave? WOHM and too far away from my baby!

@smurfette: I love both hands in her mouth! Sometimes Liam will do both thumbs and it just kills me. We don't have any raspberries in our house yet either - I can't wait for that!
@travellingbee: He is so cute and I love his hair! He looks so grown up sitting!

Oh my goodness - can I just say that I don't know how anybody does the solo parent thing! DH is in Cali for a few days for work and last night was the first time I have had to do everything for bedtime AND get everything prepped for the next day AND drop him off in the morning. OMG. It doesn't help that I had to drive him out to MIL's house rather than daycare since she opted to watch him instead and she lives pretty far out of the way!

@Smurfette: Yeah, you're right, I need to not stress! The stress is probably making it worst. I can always defrost some BM is I really need to. Also, my new flanges arrived, so going to try out the Medela tonight!

@dojo: OMG, he is sooooooo friggin cute!!!

Also, sorry @dojo: and @travellingbee: I totally called Lukas Liam because they are both L names and boys!!! Sorry I got them mixed up!!

And apparently I have small nipples!!! (Sorry, TMI!) The new flanges seem sooooo much more comfortable! I pumped for just a little bit because I need to feed Xander, but it seemed more comfortable and I got a decent amount out for the short period of time I pumped. I'm excited to try a real pumping session after Xander nurses!

    LO's name: Isaac
    Age: 4 months (20 weeks)
Weight: On July 17 he was 16lbs 6oz
Length: 25 inches at that same time
Recent milestones: He has found his feet and loves to grab them. He is turning around now when laying on his stomach. Still has only rolled the one time.
Milestone you're most looking forward to: Sitting
How's feeding going: EBF and have started cereal once a day. I keep thinking about starting other things, but I still want him to get all his breast milk, so I'm going to just wait a bit more and stick with cereal for now.
How's sleep going: We had a couple good nights last week with only two wake ups and the last couple nights we've been back to 5 wake ups.
What is your favorite trait about your LO? I love his laugh
What is something silly that your LO does? Splashing in the bath. He thinks it is so funny.

@Adira: I'm glad it seems like your pump is going to work good. I hope you get lots of milk with it tonight.
