March Mamas & Babies: 1/3 Done!

So R's teacher said this morning that yesterday she threw a huge fit yesterday. She was sitting at the high chair table playing while the teacher was feeding the other kids. Freaked out and nothing would make her happy. Not even the exersaucer which usually always works. They gave her a bottle, about 30 mins early and then she was fine. The teacher said that that stretch between bottles 2 and 3 (she has 4 total there) she never goes the 3 hours. She thinks that a little rice ceral would help. She thinks R is "jealous" the other kids are eating and she isn't.

What do y'all think? I know if I ask DH he is going to want to try it.

She doesn't freak out like that on the weekends, but I do understand she is probably burning more calories during the week playing and whatnot then at home.

@Smurfette: hmmm... I don't know what I'd do. Funny that she's jealous of them eating. Have you started her on anything? We are waiting until 6 months so I don't think I'd do rice cereal but not sure...

First day of work/daycare! Currently pumping in an empty classroom surrounded by boxes and upturned desks. Jealous of people who have actual nursing rooms at their jobs.

@travellingbee: We haven't started anything yet. I was going to wait till 6 months to start with purees.

I pump in a storage closet as well. The Mother's room is on the other side of the building, so a 10 min walk there and back, plus set up time. So I just use a storage room, so I can leave my pump in there all day.

I was thinking about you this morning!! The first day is hard but it gets easier, even though it still hurts your heart to be away.

@Smurfette: I don't know... you're already giving her 6oz bottles, so I doubt she's actually HUNGRY. If she's just jealous, I don't know that I'd give in and give her food before you're ready. Girl's gotta learn disappointment sometime!

  5. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: I agree. When she first said that she seems hungry, I said I am not sending bigger bottles. That is when she said about the rice cereal. I am so sick of everyone saying once she eats that she will STTN. I don't believe that is always the case. Maybe she does have an interest in food. The only time she sees us eat s the weekends and I haven't noticed it.

  6. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: I'm pretty sure that it's a MYTH that feeding her more will get her to STTN. I think she's getting plenty and she's probably not even hungry when she's waking up in the MOTN, so feeding her more certainly isn't going to get her to magically start sleeping better.

I think a lot of people, including daycare teachers, are used to the OLD recommendations of starting solids between 4-6 months, so they think waiting until 6 months isn't a good idea. The current recommendations are to wait and I suspect R is just fine waiting! Try not to let other people pressure you into doing something you don't want to do!!

I suspect she's being fussy for another reason - though I obviously don't know her, so I'm not sure what it could be. Maybe she just wants to be held and she gets held while being given a bottle, so this settles her and they assume she must've been hungry or jealous of other's eating? I'm not sure what else they are trying when they say nothing satisfies her. I forget - does she take a pacifier? Maybe she really just wants to comfort nurse but you're not there so a bottle is the only thing that currently works. Maybe they could try dipping a pacifier in the BM so it smells and tastes like Mommy and then give it to her?

Also, I guess it COULD be jealousy. Maybe you don't see it because she's only jealous of babies her age getting something she's not. I know Xander gets jealous when his teacher holds the new baby boy in the room! Maybe R seeing you guys eat doesn't bother her, but seeing other babies eat does? Just a thought.

@Adira: The teacher said yesterday, they tried everything, and nothing would make her happy. So they went ahead and gave her the bottle early and then she was fine. Usually they put her in the exersaucer and she is fine. Girlfriend is seriously obsessed with that thing at day care and at home. She doesn't take a pacifier. I keep trying at home and she wants nothing to do with one. Maybe she is just jealous the teachers are giving other babies attention and not her

@Smurfette: Last night was much better. He got up three times to nurse and went right back to sleep after each time. Although he did get up for the day at 7:30am.

@travellingbee: I hope that your first day back goes good. It must be hard to be away all day.

@Smurfette: As for starting cereal it does not magically make them sleep through the night. I started Isaac early (just after 4 months) as he was showing an interest in eating. He would watch us eat and mimic us. I've given him rice and oatmeal cereal and just at dinner time. He gets about a tablespoon mixed with breast milk. Some nights he gobbles it up, other nights he might have 1 bite. If she is showing interest maybe try, but don't let them pressure you into something you aren't ready for. She is obviously getting enough milk in the day.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: I have no idea then! I bet she just wants attention, but who knows - if they try giving her one on one attention and it's not working, I'm not sure what the issue is! Oh well - she'll be six months soon enough!

Sooooooo... I brought the Medela PISA to work today since I don't have to work tomorrow and if I wasn't able to pump as much as normal, it wouldn't be a big deal. And.... I pumped my normal amount!!!! Woohoo!!!

BUT my nips kind of hurt after and have this red ring around them where the aerola is being sucked into the flange. Is that normal? maybe I just need to get used to it?

  11. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@ALV91711: I think of you every time someone says that to me. I wish it was working for you.
@Adira: I think that I am just going to ignore it for now. If they bring it up again, then I will think about it.

  12. ALV91711

    pomelo / 5621 posts

@Adira: that is awesome that you were able to pump your normal amount. I hope you can continue to be successful with this pump. Enjoy your day off tomorrow. Are you keeping Xander home with you?

@Smurfette: I'm glad you are going to stick with what feels right to you. Soon enough she will be eating anyway.

I'm happy Isaac is having a good nap, but I need to give him another dose of medication soon. Crazy kid seems to like the taste, he hasn't spit any out yet.

  13. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: awesome! I get that you but it is gone by the next pumping session.

Ummm, R took a 3 hour nap at day care today. They put her down right after her 2nd bottle and slept for 3 hours. Woke up smiling! So she can do 3 hours between bottles. Also only spit up twice so medicine is helping again. She slept on the way home, so she is going to bed tonight well rested. Hopefully she sleeps good.

I am excited going to dinner with a friend tonight after I get R down. DH can stay in for once!

  14. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@ALV91711: Thanks! And yep - I'm keeping Xander with me. I've MISSED him! Especially because he keeps NOT napping at daycare and then has to nap when we get home, so I haven't had a ton of time to hang out with him this week. But we have ALL day tomorrow!!! So excited! We're also getting together with my BFF for lunch and some shopping, so it should be a fun day!

@Smurfette: Thanks for the info! Glad to hear it's normal! I think maybe once I get more used to the pump, it probably won't bother me. So now I think I might use my old pump for the mornings and bring the Medela to work and that way I won't have to rush to wash/pack pump parts in the morning!!!

WOW!!! What an awesome nap!!!! And that's great she didn't spit up as much!! Go R!! Have fun tonight!!!

Xander went down for a nap after daycare. Of course he tried to smother himself again (I checked his breathing BEFORE taking a picture, I promise!)

@Smurfette: That is an amazing nap. Hopefully that helps her sleep tonight. Enjoy your dinner out.

@Adira: So cute. Hope you have a fun day with him tomorrow.

@Adira: aww that is precious! Have fun tomorrow.

@Adira: @ALV91711: my friend just cancelled. Her daughter came home with a really bad ear infection. Guess DH is stuck with me!

    First day of daycare stats:
    He was there 8-4
Only ate 10 oz. and spread it out in 2 oz. increments. Weird.
Slept 3 hours!! Then came home and slept more AND went to bed early. Double weird. I guess it wore him out!
He spit up on the teacher 3 times lol and fussed a bunch in the morning. Ah well.
His bottom two teeth are ready to break through any minute.
    And I did fine!

  19. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@travellingbee: the first week is hard. They totally have to adjust. If he slept three hours that is awesome. I think R's first day she didn't even sleep an hour. He will get use to the bottles. I know it sucks wasting the milk. Glad you both made it through the day!

@ALV91711: She really does! She seems like she grew up overnight again!

@Smurfette: The crying sounds awful! I know a lot of people that start solids earlier, but I'm sad about it. So I'm really wanting to wait until 6 months. But if she seems ready... And I'm so jealous she had a 3 hour nap!

@Mrs. Blue: LOL. I figured that out when I saw your boys in the crib holding hands.

@Adira: Thank you! And how cute! Xander looks like he's sporting a toga! Sounds like you might need a bigger flange size.

@travellingbee: Awww. sorry about your first day back and pumping "room". I hear it gets better.

Kaitlyn literally seemed to blossom and grow so much yesterday in one day! She kept babbling away all day from morning till night and kept repeating "da-da-d" over and over. It was so cute and nice since it was DH's birthday. But wth? I'm with the girl 24/7 and I don't even get the decency to be called "mama" first?! hehe She also started leaning forward and holding herself up in a sitting position the best she ever has so far while I was taking her weekly pics! Today, while we were practicing standing, she kept lifting her feet up and down, like she was going to walk. She's also getting a lot better at rolling from back to tummy to back again! It's amazing the rate of development the past few weeks have been for all our March babies!

  22. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@travellingbee: Glad to hear he did pretty well at daycare!!! And that you did okay at work as well! Every day gets easier!

@shopaholic: Hmm... not sure about the flange. I actually went DOWN in flange size because the normal one felt like it will pulling way MORE of my aerola into it than it should. The one I have now feels mostly like my old pump, but does leave a red ring around my nipple (on the aerola), so I'm not sure!

Wow! K's really developing!!! I'm guessing the "da" sounds are easier to make than the "ma" sounds! I'm still waiting for Xander to make much more than vowel sounds. He's done "ba" a few times and "ga" a few times, but nothing a BUNCH like it sounds like K was doing! And that's really cool about how she was lifting her legs up while standing!! Soon she'll be running!!!

  23. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@shopaholic: I hear ya! I swear R gives DH more smiles on the weekends then I get. What the heck? I am the one that does everything during the week. Maybe she is punishing me for leaving her at day care.

But I do think most babies say Dada before Mama. Traitors.

R stood last night all by herself holding onto a pillow. She is so cute, when on her tummy, she gets so frustrated cause she can't quiet figure out crawling yet but is so close!

  24. shopaholic

    bananas / 9973 posts

@Adira: Oh! Ouch! Yikes! Yes, maybe try a different flange or a lower setting? And the constant chatter, it's like she has to be in the mood for it. Some days it's non-stop, and then she won't say anything for days (besides just noises).

@Smurfette: Oh, everyone at dinner or DH's birthday heard her and could tell. I thought DaDa sounds easier to say than MaMa too, but then my BFF says that her daughter said MaMa first! Go figure! Her DH is the one that stays at home with the baby all day long too. These lil rascals - they know they want to win the attention of the parent they see LESS often. They don't need to try as hard to win the one that sees them and tells them "I Love You" all day long. lol.

Wow! Yay on the standing! We REALLY need to get on baby-proofing now!

K set off the Angel Care alarm gain last night. I found her wedged up all in the corner of her crib. I turned it of, but really from my monitor, she always looks like in a face plant these days. Not even with her head turned, so I have to go in and check if she has a pathway to breathe.

  25. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

R was up in crawling position and sort of went forward before falling. I really hope she does it for real this weekend so we see it first and not day care.

Her teacher said she was doing push ups and planks and other boy stopped crawling and started doing it with her. Guess they had their own fitness class.

  26. ALV91711

@Smurfette: Wow, that is crazy! I really hope she does it for you first.

@Smurfette: OMG, I cannot believe how close R is to crawling!!!!! Xander's NO WHERE NEAR that!!!! Gooooo R!!! I really hope she does it for you this weekend!!!

OMG, Xander and I had LONG day! We went out to lunch with my BFF and then went shopping! I ended up nursing him in the Mother's Room at Babies R Us and then later in my car in the parking lot of Target, haha. Although both times didn't go great - he was soooooo distracted, so I don't think he ate as much as normal. I FINALLY got home around 7:30 and immediately put him to bed, so I'm HOPING when I feed him at 9:00, he eats enough to make up for those earlier feedings! I do NOT want any MOTN wake-ups!

  28. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: I know I am getting woken up. She fell asleep before she got her last bottle. Then I got there to pick her up, so once we got home, she ate a little but not a full nursing session. Then she kept falling asleep during the nursing session before bed.

Glad that Xander and you had a good day!

  29. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Awww, I hope you get a decent amount of sleep tonight, even if you're woken up!

I just checked the video monitor and Xander's managed to get his pacifier in his mouth! I'm both impressed and worried! I'm impressed he both found it in his crib and got it in his mouth and worried that he's going to get totally dependent on it and it will be hard to take away, haha.

@Adira: That is good he found his pacifier. Hope the 9 feeding went well and he sleeps the night.

    @Smurfette: I hope R sleeps good tonight.

Isaac had not such a good day today. He has been such a trooper with this ear infection. Today though he was tired and wouldn't sleep, hurting a crying. Poor dude. He ended up having a short late nap (6 pm) and went to bed at 9:45. I hope that he sleeps for at least a few hours. Luckily my aunt is visiting for a few days so she spent time rocking and cuddling him and that was nice.

  31. shopaholic

    bananas / 9973 posts

@Smurfette: Wow! I hope she crawls for you first too!

@Adira: lol! Kaitlyn loves the pacifier every since she could take it out and put it in by herself. I think she just likes it as a chew toy and soothing. But we don't use a paci in bed. I'll hear her cry sometimes and then find her thumb and she's passed out again.

@ALV91711: Poor guy! Glad you have some help!

I think DH and I both have some kind of cold or allergies. We're both majorly congested and I think have sinus headaches. And I've been cleaning any chance I get for two days straight because my ILs were supposed to come stay over this weekend. Waited for them all afternoon to find out they decided to come tomorrow.
K is REALLY loving her jumperoo now! She fully knows how to make it bounce like crazy! She's also giving me full on, slobbery kisses. She'll hold my face and plant them on me!

@shopaholic: That is way too cute that she gives you kisses. I've been trying to teach Isaac but nothing let.

@Adira: how did Xander do? R woke up twice:( then she woke up at 645 co DH got up and let me sleep. I woke up a little after 8, got dressed for the gym so I can leave right after so nurse. I come out and she has fallen asleep in DH arms. I should have slept longer!

@ALV91711: Sorry Isaac didn't have a great day. Is he still grabbing his ear? I hope he slept ok for you.

@shopaholic: hope DH and you are feeling better! We put R in the jumperoo last night and she didn't get it the jumping part. She looks so tiny in it.

  34. ALV91711

    pomelo / 5621 posts

@Smurfette: He is grabbing his ear/head a bit still. The tylenol seems to help with that. Although giving him the tylenol is hard, he doesn't like the taste and spits some out every time. The medication though he likes which is crazy, it is banana flavoured.

Sleep was a bit better last night. He nursed at 12:30, 4 and 6:30 and then got up just before 8. It was nice to get one bit longer stretch in there.

This is so hard. I am exhausted.

@Smurfette: Sending some hugs. Hope it gets better. Would she fall back asleep if DH gave her a bottle? At least that way you could get a bit more sleep when he is home.

I'm getting excited. About three weeks and we will all be home. It will be nice to be back in my house. Although I love where my mom lives and being with my mom and near my sisters is wonderful.
