@shopaholic: yeah I am sure DH was like why is she sending me a video of the rug, till he heard her laughing. I have watched it like 10 times since last night. It was the first time I made her laugh like that.
@travellingbee: Yuck. I hope they break through soon. Do they seem to be bothering him?
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Adira: i'm doing both! i plan to start with 1 meal of purees, then once he kind of gets a handle on that, i'm going to do 1 meal puree and 1 meal BLW... then hopefully transition to full on BLW once he's 7 months.
@travellingbee: J is trying to crawl too! i've never seen him go up on his knees though! Is L doing any yoga poses? Haha
@Smurfette: aghhh baby laughs are the best!! I love all the pics you post of her on IG - she has such big beautiful eyes too! Sorry to hear about the night wake ups again! J was waking up 1x a night last week, but it seems to have stopped again. Found out he was in another freaking wonder week... yipppeee... not really.
@shopaholic: whaaa?? Bananas are gross?!?! ok, we can't be friends!
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@shopaholic: @Mrs. High Heels: oh yeah pikes, like downward facing dog. he does those. And he gets in his knees but not on his hands at the same time. If the butts up, his head is down. If he's up in his hands, the butt is down.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: Yeah we are starting a wonder week tomorrow. So looking forward to that.
What puree did you start with?
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
Btw, TMI but my underperforming boob has been outperforming my good one lately. Strange. My supply seems off. Did your supply take a hit when you started pumping at work? I can still get a 5 ounce bottle (combined) at each pumping but it takes a while and I have to wait for a second letdown sometimes.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@travellingbee: Yep! After 3 days, I noticed it went down. I started drinking the tea, taking fenugreek and Mother's Milk Plus and it helped.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Smurfette: we started with banana - it wasn't intentional... i was at the park picnicking with some friends and he seemed interested so i let him gnaw on some. we've also given him squash. will let him try green beans next.
i posted this in the feb boards, but i really liked how this site broke down the wonder weeks since it tells you when you can expect it to start, how long it lasts, and when it should end... i know it's not an exact science but still helpful for my sanity! http://www.mybabysleepguide.com/2012/01/when-are-wonder-weeks.html
Wonder Weeks and Fussy Periods:
Wonder Week 5 - fussiness starts around 5 weeks and usually lasts 1-7 days.
Wonder Week 8 - fussiness starts around 8 weeks and usually lasts 3-14 days
Wonder Week 12 - fussiness starts around 12 weeks/2.8 months and usually lasts 1-7 days
Wonder Week 19 - fussiness starts around 15 weeks/3.5 months, peaks at 17 weeks and skills appear around 19 weeks. It usually lasts 1-6 weeks **From now on Fussy periods will last longer than previously
Wonder Week 26 - fussiness starts around 23 weeks/5.3 months, peaks at 26 weeks and skills appear around 26 weeks. It usually lasts 1-5 weeks
Weeks 29/30 or 6.8 months - This isn't actually a Wonder Week, but many babies act fussy during this time as they begin to understand that their mommy can leave them. Just thought I'd let you know
Wonder Week 37 - fussiness starts around 34 weeks/7.8 months, peaks at 36 weeks and skills appear around 37 weeks. It usually lasts 3-6 weeks
Wonder Week 46 - fussiness starts around 42 weeks/9.7 months, peaks at 44 weeks and skills appear around 46 weeks. It usually lasts 3-7 weeks
Wonder Week 55 - fussiness starts around 51 weeks/11.7 months, often peaks at 53 weeks and skills appear around 55 weeks. It usually lasts 3-6 weeks
Wonder Week 64 / 14.7 months
Wonder Week 75 / 17.2 months
Over 20 months - Other wonder weeks have been documented throughout childhood. It is also suspected that adults even go through some wonder weeks.

@Smurfette: You need to IG post it!
@travellingbee: That's great!
@Mrs. High Heels: lol. I hate bananas so much. IDK if I'll even feed it to K. I think DH will have to do that one! Thanks for posting the WW timeline again! I'm scared to think we'll be heading into a big one before/on vacation for my cousin's wedding. And the parent attachment thing. K already searches for me all the time, but not fussy. A lot of family at the wedding, and everyone will want to hold her. I just hope she stays cheerful through that trip!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: I am so scared to try BLW. Purees are the only way I am going to feel comfy for a month or two.
I have the WW apps as well. But I don't like that 1-5 week(s) for this leap.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@shopaholic: J has been starting to display some stranger anxiety too!! he'll still let people hold him, but he has this scared, searching look on his face like he's about to cry at any moment! he's definitely aware of who's who and will readily smile/laugh/coo for familiar faces, but not strangers.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@Smurfette: yea I feel more comfortable doing purees to start too! i think i'll feel more comfortable when J can at least it up really well on his own too. what do you think you'll start with? i also don't like the wide range of this leap... 1-5 weeks is huuge!
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
@shopaholic: i guess i feel lucky with J because N has had stranger anxiety all her life! seriously... she had stranger anxiety even as a newborn.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: I have no idea. I haven't looked at purees yet. I guess I need to. I already told DH I am not giving her peas cause I hate them Day care says she wants to eat when she sees the other kids eating. But I want to wait at least till 5 1/2 months, if I can't hold off till 6 months.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@travellingbee: Awww, poor L!!!! I hope he feels better soon! That's good that daycare doesn't mind him there though even though he's not feeling great. It's so hard seeing our little guys in pain!!!
OMG!!!! I would FREAK OUT if our building lost power while I was pumping!!!! Luckily I have a power converter for my car so I could go pump there, but it would really be like starting over, which would SUCK. UGH! Sorry that happened to you!!!
Gahhh, Xander still hates tummy time! He's never going to learn to crawl! I'm jealous of L and @Smurfette's R being so close!!
@Smurfette: OMG, babies laughing is THE BEST!!! Glad you were able to get it on video even though you couldn't really capture her face! Xander laughs hysterically when I plant him with kisses and I really want a picture of it or something, but I can't take it myself! Gahh!
@Mrs. High Heels: I'm thinking we'll probably start with purees too, just because I think that's what I'll feel more comfortable sending to daycare. I'm thinking I'll start doing 1 meal a day (dinner) and then I'll send purees to daycare with him and try BLW at home for dinner... I'm scared!
@travellingbee: I always have to wait for a second letdown too - I think I just have slow boobs. I can't tell the difference though from before because I never pumped this much. Since being back at work, it's been pretty consistent how much I can pump (although it goes down when I'm sick - ugh), but some days it feels like I have to pump for longer to get the same amount out. Annoying!

I am so behind on this thread (I've been busy at work = no time to get on HB ) I was trying to catch up on everything but maybe I'll try to just update for what's up with us:
Liam just turned 6 months yesterday! I can't believe it! We are going to try out some solids I think this weekend. I was waiting to talk to our pediatrician about it when we had an appt scheduled for Friday but it had to be rescheduled so I think we are just going to go for it! Not sure if we will start with rice cereal or maybe something more yummy sounding (I like the idea of sweet potato)
My SIL gave us a jumparoo to borrow and watching Liam bounce in it was SO FUN!!! We put him in it last night and he was just giggling and looked like he was having the best time. I need to get a video of him in it!
Sleepwise Liam is doing great in his crib and has been super consistent about waking up once to nurse between 2 and 4. Last night he slept from just after 7pm to 3:40. If only I went to bed at the same time I would get 8 hours... We are working now to try and maybe see if we can drop that MOTN feeding.
I can't believe our babies are getting so big! Weren't they born just yesterday?!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@dojo: OMG, Liam's already six months???? WHAT??? How did that happen???? Our babies are growing so fast!!!
Gahhh, you'll have to give me ALL THE DETAILS when you start solids! I'm so scared to start but I know I need to get on it!!! I should at least put the high chair together, haha...

ETA: I just posted these basic questions to the main board to see if we could get a thread going with tons of info/different experiences.
Ladies, now that so many little ones are close to 6 months (Seriously, all these babies turning 6 mo. is KILLING me!!! How is this possible?), can we have a big ol' food discussion?? I'm nervous and just can't decide when, what, and how to start off.
So . . .
LO's age:
What solid readiness signs is your LO showing:
When you did/plan on starting solids:
What you are starting with:
Baby led weaning, purees, or some hybrid:
How often do you/will you feed solids:
If you already are doing solids, what's your schedule with bottles/BFing and solids?:
Most excited about:
Least excited about/most scared of:
Other plans, thoughts, etc.:
(I"m sure I've missed some important questions since I've never done this, so add in whatever else you think will be relevant.
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
Additionally, this is the list I was looking at for what "readiness" signs to watch for:
Loss of tongue-thrust reflex - This allows baby to drink and swallow liquids with ease; with the tongue-thrust reflex still present, baby may simply drink in liquid purees or push the food back out. According to Dr. Jim Sears, in the first four months the tongue thrust reflex protects the infant against choking. When any unusual substance is placed on the tongue, it automatically protrudes outward rather than back. Between four and six months this reflex gradually diminishes, and that glob of cereal actually may have a chance of making it from the tongue to the tummy!
Ability to let you know she is full from a "meal" with signs such as turning away from the bottle or breast. This is important so that baby is able to self-regulate the amount of food being eaten. This helps stop baby from accidentally overeating as parents may continue to feed baby thinking that she is still hungry.
Ability to sit up and hold head up unassisted
Interest in your food (I tend to disagree with this one as when a baby reaches the age of 4-6 months, he is interested in putting everything in his mouth.)
Doubling of birth weight
Frequently waking in the middle of the night when a solid sleeping pattern had been established. This may not be the best indicator that your baby is ready for solids. Please keep in mind that a growth spurt will occur between 3-4 months of age, 6-7 months of age and also 9-10 months of age. Your baby may also be waking due to an illness or teething.

LO's age: 23 weeks (3 weeks until they are 6 mo.)
What solid readiness signs is your LO showing: Based on the list I posted:
-They both turn away from the bottle when full
-They have doubled their birth weights (Finn has tripled his, but he's still a peanut!)
-They hold their heads up unassisted but can't sit up unassisted
-They grab at food sometimes (but they grab at everything, so I'm not sure that means much)
-They've been waking up more at night to eat, but they also haven't been eating their bottles that great and have had a sleep regression--that said, they will not go back to sleep unless we feed them, which is not normal so maybe they are getting hungry
-Tongue thrust - I'm not sure if they still have this or not. I feel like it should be obvious, but I don't really know how to tell. When I put my finger in their mouth to check for teeth, E pushes on it less, so maybe that means he is losing his. Experienced mamas, please let me know how to tell if they've lost this or not.
When you did/plan on starting solids: We haven't started anything at all yet, and we're skipping cereals entirely. Our ped wants us to wait to 6 mo to do anything to maximize their calorie intake since they're still on the small side. We'll *probably* try a little out around 6 mo. and if it works, great. If not, we might just try once a week for a few weeks to give them some catch up time.
What you are starting with: Ped wants us to start with a vegetable, like green beans, etc. I'm not sure what to do. Maybe sweet potato, avocado, or something like that.
Baby led weaning, purees, or some hybrid: I think we'll do a hybrid. I want to start on purees since I think they may need an extra month to catch up a little on ability to eat BLW style. Then, I'd like to do at least some BLW.
How often do you/will you feed solids: I think we'll start with a little solids at dinner only since we have more time then during the week days. They usually have a bottle around 4:30, so we'll probably give them some solids when we get home (right before bath time!) and then a bottle before bed.
If you already are doing solids, what's your schedule with bottles/BFing and solids?: n/a yet
Most excited about: Is it terrible to say the cute baby pictures with food everywhere?? I think it will be fun to see what they like and don't like.
Least excited about/most scared of: choking, the mess, and allergies
Other plans, thoughts, etc.: I just feel totally overwhelmed by all the options, what order you should do this in, if there ready, etc. I suppose it is like anything else and looking back, all the worry will seem silly!
pomelo / 5621 posts
LO's age: 5 months
What solid readiness signs is your LO showing: He was showing a big interest when we ate and opening and closing his mouth
When you did/plan on starting solids: Planned on waiting until 6 months but started just after 4 months
What you are starting with: Started with rice cereal mixed with breast milk
Baby led weaning, purees, or some hybrid: Was going to do BLW but then because we started earlier than planned I've only done two types of cereals. I'm thinking I'll do a puree for a mid morning meal and then BLW for dinner. But that will be in a couple more weeks.
How often do you/will you feed solids: Right now just at dinner time
If you already are doing solids, what's your schedule with bottles/BFing and solids?: I feed him about an 45-60 min after BFing. So he eats around dinner time but it varies every day.
Most excited about: Seeing him try new food
Least excited about/most scared of: Choking
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
LO's age: 5 months, 10 days
What solid readiness signs is your LO showing:
-Day care says that she gets "jealous" when other babies are eating solids and she isn't.
-Wants to put everything in her mouth, but all babies do that.
-She can sit up unassisted
When you did/plan on starting solids: 6 months
What you are starting with: no clue other then a veggie
Baby led weaning, purees, or some hybrid: Purees for a month or two, then might do some BLW at home. I won't send BLW to day care till she is older.
How often do you/will you feed solids: At first going to do when we get home from day care. She usually gets a bottle at 430, and I nurse at 630 before bed, so not sure if that is too much all at once. Going to talk to the doctor about it.
Most excited about: Pictures with her having food all over herself. Her expressions when trying new foods.
Least excited about/most scared of: Choking. Especially since I am solo parenting during the week. Allergic reaction
Other plans, thoughts, etc.: So overwhelming trying to figure out what will work the best for her and us. How do I know she is really ready or not.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
R napped for 45 mins total all day at day care. 3rd day in a row. Luckily today she slept their whole way home but she is so fussy at night. She just wants nothing to do with the crib and now she won't even fall asleep in the swing.
Is there a 5 month sleep regression???
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
LO's age: 6 months next Tuesday!!!
What solid readiness signs is your LO showing: Loss of tongue-thrust reflex (according to the pediatrician), ability to turn head when full, ability to sit up (assisted) and hold head up unassisted
When you did/plan on starting solids: I guess soon... this weekend maybe????
What you are starting with: Ahhh, I don't know!!! Probably a veggie of some kind.... maybe I'll just see what speaks to me at the store!
Baby led weaning, purees, or some hybrid: I'll probably start with purees and then see what happens...
How often do you/will you feed solids: We'll start with dinners only since that's the only meal we'll have with him every day. I'll try to BF as soon as we get home from daycare at 5:30 and then dinner at 6:30 and hopefully in bed by 7:30... may not work out every day though because he often takes a nap as soon as he gets home...
If you already are doing solids, what's your schedule with bottles/BFing and solids?: N/A
Most excited about: HOPEFULLY seeing him get excited about food and be into it!
Least excited about/most scared of: The mess! And also the changes in poop...
Other plans, thoughts, etc.: I don't want to start!!! Can't my baby just stay a baby???
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: crap, I forgot about the poops. Not looking forward to that either.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Right?!? I'm also worried about constipation...
Yikes!! Sorry to hear about R's sleep issues!! That sucks! Xander has been refusing to take his third nap at daycare, but he still does his first two. I can't believe R can make it through the day on only 45 minutes of napping!! Does she seem extra fussy at all?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: they said she is fine. She is now fussy in her crib and waking up after 3 hours of sleep. This is June all over again. I can't do this again..........
pomelo / 5621 posts
@Mrs. Blue: It was recommended to me not to do sweet potato as once of the first veggies because then they won't want the other ones.
@Smurfette: From what I understand at this age the food isn't supposed to replace any milk, so doing it in between two feedings is perfect timing. It does make the evenings busy though,
@Adira: The poop does start to smell quite a bit, that is not fun. Also constipation. Isaac was pretty cranky today and I'm pretty sure it was because he was constipated. Once he pooped he was much happier.
Feeding has gotten so much messier in the last few days. Isaac has decided he wants to help feed himself. He either wants the spoon and will stick it in his mouth or he holds my hand to help. Or he will just hold the spoon and swing it around while I feed him with another one and then we usually end up spilling a couple spoonfuls. He has fun though and likes it, so it is worth the mess.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
Now I know why she has been so fussy and not sleeping, not only is she trying to crawl but there is a tooth making its way out!!! I felt it this morning but I can't get a picture. Will have to do tomorrow when DH is here. Ready for him to get home tonight. I just hate he gets home after she is asleep.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: OMG, she's getting a tooth???? No wonder she's been fussy!!! Hopefully once it breaks through, she'll feel better!!!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: It is already broke out a little bit. I can feel the sharpness on the top of her gums. Her teacher this morning could see it without even feeling in her mouth.
I hate that she is hurting but it makes me feel so much better that there is a reason for the not sleeping and being so fussy.
@ALV91711: That sounds so cute!!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Is it crazy that I'm glad Xander hasn't gotten any teeth yet?? I love his gummy smiley and don't want him to get teeth yet, haha!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: No, I am not ready for teeth yet. I wanted to be done BF before it happened.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Hopefully she doesn't bite you! That might made you end sooner than you were thinking!
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@Smurfette: OMG that is so funny! L had his tooth break through today too! I can't see it because he won't let me in his mouth, but I can feel it and it is very sharp! But I could tell yesterday that it was going to be any minute. He had a little clear bubble that had a split in it. Poor babies!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@travellingbee: I thought that I felt something two weekends ago and then last weekend. But DH told me that I was crazy and he didn't feel anything. What to men know?
So glad that L's finally broke out. I know he has been hurting for awhile. Have you been giving him anything for it? I went ahead and gave her some Tylenol this morning cause she was being super fussy and I want her to actually sleep today. I know she is so tired. I bought Hyland's teething tablets, but I wonder if it to late to start using them.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@Smurfette: Just Tylenol occasionally. I guess that's what all this diarrhea has been about.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@travellingbee: Yep! R hasn't been much looser and that is a sign of teething. I just thought it was from the ear infection and then medication. Now I wonder if she really had an ear infection or she was just teething.
