@Smurfette: Yikes, that's a lot! I wonder if I should do something crafty like that... Though I'd only have to make 5 things!

  2. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Yeah I have a lot of Aunts/Uncles and cousins. I only need 2 for DH's family. And of course one for us!

  3. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Ahh, we don't exchange gifts with aunts, uncles, or cousins! So I would just have to do parents and our brothers/sisters. Oh, and one for us, so 6 total! If I even do anything crafty, haha.

  4. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: This would be their only gift. Our rule is once you have kids you don't get gifts. So my Aunt and Uncle buy for R now, not us. I try and get something small if I think of it. I will probably just get them a print from her pictures this year.

@Smurfette: Oh crap - I wonder if I should send a picture of Xander to my aunts/uncles... I think I've received pictures of their kids... gahh

  6. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Just send one with the Christmas card!

  7. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Yeah, but now I have to actually TAKE a decent picture of Xander. And print it out!

  8. shopaholic

@Adira: We do Xmard card pics every year! Usually cheap Costco ones or TinyPrints. You should do one with Xander this year!

  9. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: I have seen your pictures, you take good ones!

  10. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

    @Smurfette: haha, thanks!

@shopaholic: I was actually thinking about that! I can't decide if I want to do a photo card or just include a photo... I might go the lazy route and just include a photo!

  11. shopaholic

    bananas / 9973 posts

@Adira: Actually, easy is why we do Xmas photo cards! The photo basically IS the card! You write one message, and voila! I can't imagine having to hand sign every single card again ever. And it's like $15 for 50 I think at Costco.

  12. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: We do photo cards before we had R, so we are really doing them this year. I meant include a separate print with the Christmas card, that way they can frame if they want too.

  13. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: That makes sense! I always enjoy getting photo cards, but then feel weird leaving them out all year if they're particularly festive! An included picture is definitely easier (for the receiver) to display if they want!

    Hi ladies!

I have a lot to catch up on today (holiday cards and pumpkin patches and boob biting!) but I am just writing quickly right now to vent about Pete's illness. He has had a cold for a solid month right now. I just assumed it was a never-ending daycare cold but my mom mentioned that maybe it could be an allergy to his formula since he started formula around the same time as the cold. I researched our formula choice a lot and he seems to be happy with it in every other sense. I don't know if it's worth switching to a new formula (nondairy maybe) just to see if it improves. And then if it does improve, how do I know it was really the formula or that he just started to feel better?

The congestion has really affected his sleep and all our sleep training has gone out the window as we now do anything we can to get him to sleep and breathe comfortably.

Anyyyway, his daycare called me today to say that although he is eating and pooping well, and he doesn't have a fever, he just seems "off" to them and his cheeks are very flushed and his fingers are very cold. Awwe, my poor baby. I have no idea what could be wrong. The pediatrician didn't seem too concerned- she said I could bring him in or I could give him some ibuprofen and watch him closely for a day or two to see if it improves. Any ideas what could be wrong??

@QueensBee: Hugs! Hope your house gets better soon!

I don't see how formula would cause him to have a cold. Could he be allergic to new detergent? Lotion? Bath wash?

Is he teething? R gets a runny nose when teething too.

Last time day care called me to say R was having an off day, she had an ear infection. Highly possible since he has been stopped up.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@QueensBee: Aww, poor Pete! Honestly, I'm not sure how formula would affect him like that. You'd think if he was allergic to something, you'd notice it in his BMs or more spit-up or a skin reaction of some sort. Did you ask your pediatrician about that at all?

And Xander's had month-long colds before too. Or they'll come in waves - get worse, get better, get worse, get better. I just assumed he was getting one after another after another. Especially since I've also been getting sick all the time! It's normal for babies to be sick all the time their first year of daycare!

I hope he feels better soon!

@QueensBee: poor Pete. On my phone right now so much. But maybe post this medical question on the regular board and hope Mrs. Jacks will write a response? I would take a wild guess at ear infection too? Though we have t been through it - just based on the "off" feeling.

    hostess / papaya / 10219 posts

@QueensBee: Man am I behind too. I second the ear infection idea. The problem is you can't tell unless you have the doctor look. We had a cold for a month that turned into an ear infection. His sleep got horrible and he was cranky-pants during the day. Look to see if he grabs or touches an ear a lot. My LO is finally on the mend after 3 courses of antibiotics.

We were at IL's for the weekend and it was a pleasant trip but now I am all out of sorts as I got nothing done all weekend. I HAVE to go grocery shopping!! And I guess my body is feeling the effects because I normally pump 12 ounces a day and today I got 6 1/2. Thank goodness for stashes!

I got the best news ever. MY MIL told me that for my birthday next week, she is coming into town to watch L and is sending us to a FANCY hotel for the night. I am soooooo excited!!! It is the best present ever! I really can't wait. (Although admittedly nervous because it is my first time away from him!)

Thank you all so much for the very helpful and reassuring responses! I appreciate them all!

The good news is that he actually seemed to be acting like himself when I first picked him up. He was super playful and smiley. Crawling everywhere and playing with the dogs. He started to act exhausted around 5:45pm so I put him to bed a bit earlier than usual, but it's not like it was dramatic change of personality or anything. Phew!

@Smurfette: @travellingbee: @shopaholic: @adira: I totally think you are onto something with the ear infection idea. I read online that it can cause the flushed cheeks, and he was playing/rubbing his left ear while he drank his bedtime bottle. I never would have noticed that if you didn't mention it as being a sign. Ugh, we just finished a 10 day round of antibiotics for the last ear infection! I gave him some ibuprofen so that, whatever it is, he can be comfortable tonight and we can reevaluate in the morning.

@Smurfette: I think my mom was suggesting that a reaction to the formula would be general congestion, like runny eyes and nose type reaction. Apparently my cousin had a reaction like that to formula when he was a baby but this was 30 years ago. I spoke to the pediatrician and she thinks that, because he is an otherwise thriving baby, it's just a classic daycare cold and not a response to a formula allergy. I never even considered the detergent or soap allergy though! I will have to think about that... Thanks for the hugs.

@QueensBee: He might be resistant to the antibiotics? That's happened to me when I was younger.

@travellingbee: Wow, that IS the best news ever! That will be SO HEAVENLY. What a great gift!
I actually had a dream last night that I was sleeping alone in a hotel room. Ahhh, blissful. But, in my dream I overslept and was late to work, so then it because a stressful dream!

@Smurfette: I love the idea of including a non-festive print that gives people the option to frame! Brilliant!

@adira: Ouch! How is your boob feeling today? Your post got me thinking that it must be kind of confusing to babies- we encourage them to chew with solid foods but then they can't do that when they're nursing!

Just took K in for a couple more shots. Her growth seems to have slowed down in the past month! They probably mis-read her height last month, but we're still at 26.5" and just at 15 lbs 10 oz. So she is falling back on percentiles a bit, but doctor isn't worried. He also wasn't worried about her lack of interest in solids. And he mentioned that K REALLY IS an Active Baby! Wouldn't stay still for a second. lol.

Actually, I think K might do better with finger foods than purees. She likes to gnaw on things I give her to hold (i.e. cucumbers, celery, apple). Oh, I finally gave her fruit - apple, because she was trying to copy me biting the apple. O course she loved it because it's sweet. I've let her gnaw on it twice now - I think she loves scraping the juices out.

@travellingbee: Oh wow, sorry to hear about your output today! That sucks! But that's awesome about your birthday!! So fun!!!

@QueensBee: I'm actually wondering if maybe Xander has an ear infection. He's been pulling at his ear all day today and his cheeks are flushed!

My boob feels okay today! And I haven't been bitten today either, so yay! I think I'm recovered, haha.

@travellingbee: Woo hoo! That is an awesome birthday gift!! You can sleep all night and sleep in!
@QueensBee: Hope he is better in the AM!!
@shopaholic: Could you get one of those things (can't remember what they are called) that you put the fruit in so they can suck on them. Did you try a Mum Mum? R loves them and it is the only thing she will feed herself.
I wouldn't worry about slowing down, I think growth does at this point.

  27. shopaholic

    bananas / 9973 posts

@Smurfette: I do have those mesh things. I tried fruit in it once, but she didn't have much interest. Rather chew on the handle and bang/throw the thing around - with me worrying about fruit juices all over the place. I think I'm not cut out for the messy eating stage.

Going to Target after K wakes up. Going to buy these mum mum things, yogurt melts, and rice cereal (I'm breaking down...)

  28. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

    @shopaholic: Have you tried oatmeal?

I don't think that I am made for the messy stage either. Which is why I am glad that she likes us to feed her!

  29. shopaholic

    bananas / 9973 posts

@Smurfette: Yeah. Remember - she throws up about 1/2 the time I've given her oatmeal. And end of last week, I noticed she started getting random splotches and a bit of a diaper rash. So I stopped giving it to her this weekend and it seems to be clearing up. The ped did warn us that more kids seem to be allergic to oatmeal? I might try again with oatmeal later and see if the rashes come back.

@Smurfette: Oh! Did you just try normal Cheerios? We had a new box, so I've just put some in front of her right now....

@shopaholic: Oh yeah that is right.
    Yep, regular plain old Cheerios.

Busy day for the March mama's.

@Smurfette: I hope your last week of nursing goes smoothly. It will be so nice to go out and not have to worry about pumping. I like your craft idea.

@Adira: Glad he hasn't bit you again. Such a cute picture with the teeth. I can not get a picture of Isaac's teeth.

@QueensBee: I hope that he is feeling better. That is such a long time to be sick.

@shopaholic: I bet she likes chewing on those foods too since they would be cold on her gums. It probably feels good.

@travellingbee: That is an awesome birthday present! I hope you enjoy your night away.

7 months today! I can not believe it. Where is the time going?

I'm thinking of doing a photo card with a picture with santa. Much easier than writing out a card to everyone with a picture in it. I have a huge family. As well for the grandparents I'm thinking of making handprint ornaments out of salt dough.

Seeing Mrs Blue's other post about bottle issues got me thinking.

How often is your LO nursing/taking a bottle?
    How many ozs?
    What size nipples?

  34. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

R still eats every 3 hours at day care, but at home she can go longer but usually we stick to 3 hours.
    6 ozs Formula
size 1 still. Wondering if we need to switch.

  35. ALV91711

    pomelo / 5621 posts

@Smurfette: He is nursing about 5-6 times in the day and 1-2 times over night. Some days will be less and some days more, that is just average.

  36. Mrs. Blue

    blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts

    @Smurfette:

    Elliot:
How often is your LO nursing/taking a bottle? Every 3-4 hours
    How many ozs? 6-8 ounces
What size nipples? Size 3 (I moved them up with the age recommendations , so they switched to #2 at 3 mo., and #3 at 6 mo.)

    Finn:
How often is your LO nursing/taking a bottle? every 3-4 hours
How many ozs? (see my other post) - if we push him, 4-6 ounces
    What size nipples? #3

  37. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Mrs. Blue: I am wondering if we need to switch now we are on formula. But afraid she will eat so fast. I am not sure what to do about how many ozs. Sometimes she is fine with 6 and 3 hours and the other times she freaks out right before 3 hours like girlfriend is starving.....

  38. travellingbee

    hostess / papaya / 10219 posts

@Smurfette: L nurses at 7 am then takes two 5 oz. bottles at school. He also eats two solids meals there. Then he nurses again at 430, and 7 (one more solids in there) and usually once at night. So 2 bottles, 4 nursings, 3 solids meals. Goes about 3 hours between bottle/nursing
4-5 oz, but he often breaks that up into smaller eating sessions (distracted eater)
We've never changed the nipples.... So I'm not sure. Slow flow? Maybe I need to look at getting faster flow ones...

  39. Mrs. Blue

    blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts

@Smurfette: Maybe just buy a couple of the faster size and try it out. If it works well for her, than you can get enough for the rest of the bottles. That's how we handled it. E does the same thing on timing bottles, while I'm thinking, "Dude, you just put away 7 ounces, 3 hours ago. You aren't exactly going to waste away!"

  40. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

    @Smurfette:

How often is your LO nursing/taking a bottle? 5-6 times (3 bottles at daycare every 3 hours, but can go longer nursing at home)
    How many ozs? 5 oz
    What size nipples? 1!!

I've heard that if they don't seem frustrated with the size 1 nipples, you can keep them on it!
