@tarabonno: Congrats on the great appointment! Hearing that heartbeat was one of the coolest things ever!
I have my NT scan scheduled for October 22nd and I am so excited. Reaching that 12 week mark I feel is a huge step and everyone tells me that that u/s is one of the best bc its the first time you actually see a baby (and not a blob like at 8 weeks lol).

@mae - I know! That's the silver lining! I feel like hitting 8 weeks felt like a major milestone... like so much more pregnant than 6 weeks for some reason? I don't want to wish this pregnancy away because it's already going so quickly, but I also want to fast forward to the point where it's not a secret anymore!!

@tarabonno: awww what a cute little bean Glad everything went well!
I'm starting to get so antsy for my u/s. I still haven't scheduled my IPS testing, but I'm guessing it will be the first week of November. I can't believe I still have a month to wait to see if there's actually anything in there

@tarabonno: congrats lady! So happy to hear the great news that all is going well and u get a bonus look at your baby. Awesome.
Is it strange that my doctor does ultra sounds with every visit? I'm just wondering what the norm is for you guys in different regions of the world.. And why.
@mrsog: our next appointment is on October 22nd as well so I will remember you.

@mrsog: gah, jealous of your upcoming u/s too!
Is anyone else here not doing genetic testing? I'm very comfortable with our decision but I'm so sad about not getting to see our little blob again at 12 weeks!
@Glitter: I don't know if it is "strange" but it is not the norm for my doctor. I was told she does routine ultrasounds at 8 weeks (for dating) and 20 weeks (anatomy) and that is it unless she has a specific reason/concern to do more. That's cool you get to see your baby at every visit though! I think we just get to hear the heartbeat via doppler at our appointments.

@Mae: I am doing the NT scan purely for routine. I am interested to see the development at 12 weeks and would like to know everything is on the right path. 100% regardless of what they find - I will not go any further and will not do the CVS or amnio. They are to invasive for me and regardless of what they find I won't terminate so I don't need any added stress.
papaya / 10343 posts
@mrsog: totally understandable. If our insurance situation was different we might do the same. But since we're paying for ultrasounds out of pocket and we'd be doing it just to see the baby, it seems silly to spend the money on it. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to learn a little patience to make it through the next 11(!!) weeks until my anatomy scan.
apricot / 388 posts
@Mae: that def makes sense. I am fortunate to have great coverage. Had it been that I was paying out of pocket, my decision would have been different and I would have skipped this one too.

@tarabonno: So exciting! I have 6 days until mine and I'm counting down the hours.
I think the amount of ultrasounds has gone up since my first baby (2005-06). I definitely only had one, and it was the 20 week anatomy scan. With my son (2011-12), I had one at 7 weeks, one at 21 weeks, and one at 36 weeks that was pretty pointless. I might opt not to get that one this time around, because it just made me so over pregnancy once I found out he was already 7.5 lbs and his lungs were mature. Like if he's ready to come out, come out already!

Also: this weekend, at 7 weeks, I finally got the tender/swollen breast symptom. Thought there was something wrong with me!

@tarabonno- yay for baby! So exciting hearing the heartbeat huh? and congratulations on week 8.
@mae- we are planning on doing genetic testing. If there is anything wrong, I would like to prepare myself mentally.

Our RE told us that we'll talk about genetic testing when we get with our "regular" doctor, which is part of the reason she wants us to see them sooner rather than later. She'll release me in two weeks, but she wants me to see them really soon after that so we can talk about testing options. This is something I haven't really read about or thought much about?

@tarabonno: so great to see the picture of your little bean! Glad to hear everything is on track!
papaya / 10343 posts
@tarabonno: It seems like *most* people do it now just for the info and also to get another fun ultrasound. Because we'd be paying for it out of pocket (and it isn't cheap) we thought a little more carefully about it and because we have no risk factors, and we wouldn't terminate regardless of what we found out, and because there is very rarely anything you can actually DO about it when you find out something is wrong at the 12 week scan, we decided not to do it. We really aren't concerned about birth defects or anything since we have no family history/risk factors so it just didn't make sense to us to pay the money to find out everything is fine (or on the teeny tiny chance things aren't fine, to just worry about it for another 6 months when there is nothing we can do about it). But like I said, if our insurance paid for it we probably wouldn't just done it to see the kiddo again

@tarabonno: Eeeee about pic, good appt and official EDD!!! Love the pic of your little fluffy alien baby! Good hb too!!
@mrsog: I remember the 1st time at 6w u/s she was a fluffy blob, and it was insane to me how 4w later (we had a few scares, plus NT scan (we refer to it as IPS here)) we had u/s's at 10w, 11w and 12w and she looked like a baby, it was so, so cool. Oct 22nd will come quick for you!!
@cookie_dough: My doc schedules IPS stuff after the dating one, I guess there's a big enough range in the IPS stuff if the timing was a little off? Will you book it at next prenatal appt?
@Glitter: Awesome about u/s's every visit, that would be so awesome!!
@Mae: We are doing the testing. Did it the first time more for the chance to see the babes again, but DH and I said we would want to know or have choice if there was something worth talking about with regard to it all, so we are doing it for that, too....heaven forbid.
I was 8w yesterday. Been a solid symptomless stretch which I am pretty bummed about, a little reassurance would be awesome. Hopefully on the plus side, ultrasound tomorrow at noon. Please be thinking of us then! I am going on my own, will update DH and then report back to you ladies as soon as I can No one else to tell

@tarabonno: it is totally up to you but should factor in your risks etc. the only tests offered to us last time were the NT scan and blood testing (quad screen) around 16 weeks. We declined the NT scan but took the quad screen, which screens for some of the most common birth defects. I thought it would be helpful to know and our results were fine...we will probably do the same this time.

@taranonno: Love seeing your little squishy baby! Great news on the good appt. ...it's real!
@beebug: all the best tomorrow. Send good vibes your way.
Sorry I've been MIA. Traveling for work this week. And let me just say, the airport is an agrivating, smelly, barf-inducing place to be at 9 wks KU. I stole the barf bag from the plane and shoved it in my purse for future use, hopefully without any co-workers seeing.
My update is that we found a new dr that WE LOVE. Totally different experience than the old practice. She wanted to do another sono so we got to see Piney again at 8w5d, measuring right on with hb @ 174bpm. DH is now carrying my purse everywhere for me and opening all doors. So cute...overkill...but really cute. We also drove home to my folks house to have lunch with them and surprised them with the news. My dad was having eye surgery the next day so we brought the sono and said, "pops, we have something we want you to look at but we know your eyes are bad so mom might have to help." they we shocked, mom cried. Dad had to ask a bunch of questions before he figured it out. Later we all face-timed my bro & SIL in Hawaii. They were shocked too and his response was "well, you won this race." Feel slightly bad, I think we may have hit on a hot-button issue for them. But, really glad we shared and the family is all very happy. I had to show my mom how to make a hidden Pinterest board so she didn't inadvertently out me with all the copious pinning that I know will come from her in the months ahead.
Thinking of all you May Mammas!

@mrshoneybear- overkill is good. Play the preggos card
All you can
That was such a cute reveal to your parents.
Thank for for secret Pinterest boards. Too bad they only allow for three.

@MRSHONEYBEAR: ugh, totally agree about airports! I had to fly back and forth to NOLA at 6 weeks and then back and forth to ATL at 9 weeks and blech. One more trip to DC in 3 weeks and no more flying for me for a looooong time I hope. Also I had to teach my mom about the secret pinterest boards too bc right after I told her she started pinning baby stuff. Moms.

@Beebug: I hadn't even thought about the fact that if the dates are off, the IPS testing might not happen at the right time! I guess that since my cycles were quite regular, my GP isn't worried about it. She already gave me the requisitions and info to schedule my own IPS testing, now I just have to call and actually do it Good luck today with your U/S!!!

@Mae: I have to drink 1.5L of water (3 water bottles) between 1 hour and 1.5 hours before and not empty until after this u/s.
It's effing hell. I don't know how it can be so different in different places for water drinking and u/s, I remember this on Oct 2012 boards for #1, it was different for me it seemed!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mae: yah, it certainly takes the excitement away from it just waaaaiting to be able to pee again. It's awesome (not!) when they say they need me to empty a little and I have to stop mid-pee. I'm not even sure if that's better than having to hold it completely, lol.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: is that even possible?!?! I so feel for you. I'm glad it will be over soon(ish) and then we get to hear all about it!
kiwi / 619 posts
@Beebug: Oh man, I HATE that feeling! The first time I went for an U/S last pregnancy, I drank soooo much water and was in so much pain that I was pretty much in tears the waiting room, I felt like such a dork! Someone else asked the receptionist if his wife was going to be seen soon because she really had to pee. The receptionist told him that if she really had to pee, she should just do it. As soon as I heard that I ran passed them and stole the bathroom hahaha. I've since learnt that I really don't need to drink that much water to fill my bladder
apricot / 388 posts
I've never heard of the full bladder thing. As soon as I got to my first appt they had me pee in a cup - weird its different in different places.
@Beebug: cant wait to hear about today's appt! good luck!
persimmon / 1281 posts
Lol. I've never heard of the full bladder thing either. I had to pee in a cup as well before getting the u/s.
So finally everyone at work now knows I'm pregnant! Phew! Being the only married person with a child (though unborn) I am so shocked that most people are very happy for me! My boss' reaction really left me feeling down, but since then, everyone has been excited and asking lots of questions and giving me tips for fighting morning sickness lol. It has certainly been a load off my back
pomegranate / 3917 posts
All good. I've peed and can be human again!
And good news! Just got off the phone with DH! Saw the hb and our little bean! I am right on right lmp edd, and measuring 8w2d bang on, official EDD May 12th!
Holy crap!!!!!!
