    Had my appt!

166lbs, and bp was 120/80 (high for me) and here it begins I was measuring small. About 2w behind, and that didn't start til 30w or so last time, my doc isn't concerned, but any less behind next time, I go for an extra u/s. I chatted with my Mom about it, and she said she was told she was going to have 4lb babies, and was measuring small, my sis and I were 8lb8oz, and 8lb11oz respectively. My DD was 9lb1oz, even tho I gained 60lb, I was still measuring small, so I will try to not let it bug me! We talked labour/birth plan, bc after baby, bf'ing, circumcision if boy, lots of great things! My doc is not having me do the GD test based on last time, being under 30, and having I history of it in fam, so....score? lol.

@Beebug: sounds like a great appointment over all! My doctor has never even measured me? I wonder if they just don't do that if you're overweight because maybe it would be harder to tell or something? Or maybe because I just had that ultrasound so they were able to tell the baby's size based on that. Regardless, I'm sure it is nothing to worry about! And yay for not having to do the GD test!

@Beebug: that's awesome that you get to skip the GD test And that's good that you doc isn't concerned about measuring small. that's great that you were able to talk about bfing, circumsicion, etc. Ugh, my doc would never bring up any of those things. Oh well, at least my appointments are nice and quick hahaha

@Mae: I think that last pregnancy, my doctor only started measuring me later on...like late-20ish weeks (possibly around 28)? I actually got measured at my last appointment this time around, but I think that's only because my regular doc wasn't there and a medical student took his place (so maybe it was just for practice? hahaha)

@Beebug: Yay for a great appointment. I'm jealous that you won't have to do the GD test!

@Mae: my doctor said she was going to start measuring me at my next appointment which is at 24 weeks. I also noticed last time that the weeks I got an ultrasound she didn't measure me - she could tell growth was on track based on the ultrasound I guess

@cookie_dough: my doc didn't bring those topics up either. But if I asked she was open to talking about it. The ones she bought up were picking out a pediatrician, having a bag and car seat ready at 35 weeks, what to do if I go into labor. She's pretty laid back but I like that.

  6. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@Mamasig: This last appt I had was 24 weeks, next one is at 28. She didn't mention she was going to start measuring me, but maybe. She did tell me at the next one I need to have my rhogam (sp?) shot and my TDAP vaccine. She also brought up finding a pediatrician! not something I had even considered yet. She said we'd talk birth plans at 36 weeks because if I go into labor before that the plan is: do whatever we have to do to make sure the baby is healthy.

It's definitely nice not having to do it! I have to go for bloodwork around 28w and that's it!

I got super emotional telling DH about the appointment, talking about labour, delivery, etc. Like excited emotional, but still a bawling mess, all of that is SO exciting and I look forward to going through it all again with DH, such an amazing experience this baby making business!

@cookie_dough: I feel like I didn't get measured this early last time, but even my family doc before I switched to baby doc was measuring me (at like 16w!) who knows.....!

I ran into an elementary school friend who grew up around the corner from where I did, in the doc's office yesterday, she's been married 5 years, 2 girls, I had a moment of like "holy crap....we're grown up now". Time is going by way too quickly!

  8. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@Mamasig: Yes! My doc talked about labour now too. Any fluid gush or blood gush go straight to L&D, any contractions go right away too. If no movement, told me what to do too (two one hour "tests" at home, lol) and if not to go to L&D. Basically said no more emerg visits, straight to L&D from here on in.....crazy!

The best was him asking "what is your birth plan, have you thought about one?" and my response was "a healthy baby", lol. I didn't do one for #1, and won't for this one, he said odds are on this labour will be shorter (omg YES if that ends up being true) and so pain management could look totally different!

  9. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@Beebug: Are you supposed to be doing the kick count at this point? I think my doc said we won't start doing that until after my next appointment, although I should make sure I feel her daily. Which usually she kicks me before I even get out of bed, so that is sort of nice to check that off my list early haha

  10. Mamasig

    pomegranate / 3565 posts

@Beebug: actually those were things I remember her bringing up during my last pregnancy, but I don't remember when she did exactly. This time at my 1st appointment, she asked if I wanted a repeat c section I said yes and that was it. She always asks if I have questions, but I usually don't especially this being my 2nd time. I'm a low maintenance patient - I guess! I never had a birth plan either - healthy baby and healthy mama is my plan!

  11. Mamasig

    pomegranate / 3565 posts

@Mae: I never did formal kick counts with my 1st. I just made sure I could feel him every day. I would sometimes lay on my side and wait a little while to make sure I felt him. It also didn't have to necessarily be a "kick" but just movement. As he got bigger, the feeling was more pressure or pushing it him shifting. Movement was something I was a little paranoid about because my sister's SIL had a stillborn at around 38 weeks.

Also, you may want to ask your doc if she recommends a pediatrician. That's how I found mine. I love my son's doc!

  12. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@Mamasig: yea, at this point she said as long as i feel her at some point every day it is fine. but later she'll have me do a formal count i guess. Which is fine. At this point at least, my girl is a mover and a shaker. Every morning and usually after dinner especially, she seems to move nonstop for an hour or so. I could prob get my 10 kicks/movements in in under 15 minutes.

also she said she doesn't recommend anyone specifically. She recommended asking friends for recommendations.

Hi everyone. I've been MIA with our move and being crazy busy. Haven't had much time to keep track of everyone but I'm going to try to read through the last several pages!

@Beebug: I measured small the entire pregnancy last time and it was a pain because of all the ultrasounds and appointments but everything was fine. What does it mean that you don't have to take the GD test? Do they assume that you have it or that you don't?
@Mae: Some docs just don't measure because they consider it an outdated practice.

The midwife measured me at my last appointment around 22 weeks. I like how my new practice doesn't give me any information unless I ask for it. So much less to stress out about! She just said BP is good, heartbeat is good, measurement is right on track, etc. My next appointment is not until almost 28 weeks and I have the GD test and another ultrasound to check out the low-lying placenta and cyst. It's going to be a long day. I have to remember to cool it on the carbs before the appointment because last time I had a carb heavy lunch and failed the 1-hr test (but was no where even close to having GD based on the 3-hr test).

  14. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@Mae: He didn't say kick count, asked if I was feeling movement and was there any routine/habits to them, I said definitely yes, so he then said if I notice no movement anywhere along the way to ensure I lay down for an hour in a quiet spot and get 6 movements in that hour. If not 6 movements, to get up, eat, drink and dance, then lay down again and if in that 2nd hour I don't get 6 to go right to hosp.

@Mamasig: Exactly, I don't care how it happens, just want baby and me healthy after it's all said and done! I am feeling pretty low maintenance at this point too, he asked if we wanted to do birth classes again, hospital tour, I said if LOs were further apart yes, but we'd be ok this time!

  15. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@skipra: I hope your placenta and cyst issues have resolved! At my last ultrasound my placenta was only 1.7cm from my cervix (has to be at least 2) and this time it was 5. So it moved WAY up out of the way. fingers crossed for the same result for you!

  16. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@skipra: Assuming I don't have it I guess! Just based on history, and being under 30, and not getting it the last time that I would not likely have it this time! I'll take it, lol.

Welcome back! You move in Feb, right? Or have you moved?! Hope it goes or went well, I so never want to move again after our last move in August!

    pomegranate / 3350 posts

Question for second+ time moms... is the baby's movement different from last pregnancy? I thought DS was active but at this point I could still go a day or two without feeling him much and it probably wasn't until around 28 or 30 weeks that it was more consistent. This time around the movement is practically nonstop. I'm not sure if it's just the placement of the placenta? Last time it was partially anterior which may have blocked some of the movement? I'm hoping it's not an indicator that this baby will be even more active than DS because he just doesn't stop!

  18. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@skipra: Movement is definitely busier this time. I feel movement now as if I were 27/28w with #1!

  19. Mamasig

    pomegranate / 3565 posts

@skipra: movement for mine is still slow. But I have an anterior placenta this time and I'm pretty sure I did last time too. I never had those kicked in the ribs feelings that people always mention.

  20. cookie_dough

    kiwi / 619 posts

@skipra: I feel like there's a lot more movement in there this time as well. I'm hoping that doesn't mean I won't have a calm, laid-back baby Maybe I was just spoiled with DD, but she was a super calm baby, good sleeper, didn't cry much. I don't really know how to handle a baby who cries and doesn't sleep well

  21. Mamasig

    pomegranate / 3565 posts

@cookie_dough: I think the same thing. DS is pretty laid back - never been a crier, he eats well, just generally a good baby. But I do hope I get a better sleeper!

  22. cookie_dough

    kiwi / 619 posts

@Mamasig: Haha, I'm hoping for a better eater (but without giving up the good sleeper part!) We've had SO MUCH trouble with DD's eating. She was never able to bf, so I had to exclusively pump for 5 months (and I was lucky with my supply and had a massive freezer stash that lasted until she was around 9 months). Solids were a nightmare...she didnt' really start until 12 months (literally mouth clamped shut, refused to take a single bite until then). And now at 18 months she's FINALLY starting to eat better...but meal planning/eating is a huge ordeal for us because the smallest distraction and she will stop eating. It has caused me a lot of stress! Anyways, all that to say...hoping for a better eater this time

  23. Mamasig

    pomegranate / 3565 posts

@cookie_dough: I always joke that this kid is going to sleep all the time and not eat and that I won't know what to do!

DS always ate way more and slept way less than all the "guidelines" say. At first, I thought something was wrong. Nope, each kid is different! But that kid fights sleep so hard. And he actually doesn't need much of it. I always hear about kids who sleep 12 hours at night and take 3 hour naps. Not mine! I used to worry but quickly realized that he just doesn't need as much sleep.

  24. skipra

    pomegranate / 3350 posts

@cookie_dough: @Mamasig: I'm hoping for a better eater and sleeper! DS is just too busy for both and it is so hard! I'm worried that this one is even more active than DS when I was pregnant. I don't know if I can handle 2 that won't eat or sleep.
@Beebug: Maybe that is a sign you're having a boy! Most moms that I know with both said the boys were much more active in the womb. And we just moved. It was such a pain that I hope we never have to do it again...or at least for a very long time!
@Mae: Wow that's great that it moved so far up! Are you having any other ultrasounds to check growth since they are not measuring you?

  25. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@skipra: nope! Everything looked perfect with the baby so no more ultrasounds unless something else pops up. Maybe they will start measuring me at some point? Or maybe will just assume everything is fine unless they have reason to believe otherwise. We'll see!

  26. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@skipra: Maybe boy! I am having a day of wanting to know again, hahaha. Ugh, how on earth am I going to make it without knowing!!

This is a good thing to talk about with 2nd time Mom's. I am trying to not get my expectations up that this one will be like DD. Pregnancies can be this different, so can the kids that result, lol. Newborn days are rough regardless and that is to be expected, but I have to remember that even then, and definitely beyond won't be the same! DD is a good sleeper, eater, happy kid, and we may not get that this time!

I forgot to also add from my doc appt, I asked him about my laproscopy scar from when my IUD was removed, asked him if it looked normal. I am definitely self-conscious about it now and he said you can tell something went wrong and I told him about how my body reacted to the internal stitches. He said it's something we can cosmetically repair (laser and steroid shots?) but will wait until after I am done having babies, which makes sense, said the scar colour will fade eventually, but it is really elevated/prominent off my body. I don't know how else to explain it, but it's like there is a pipe cleaner under the scar, or a hard worm, lol.....my bottom scar is perfect, the colour is darker, but flat against my skin, this one is a big speed bump, and of course it's the one at my belly button and about an inch wide. Ugh yay body image issues!

  27. Mamasig

    pomegranate / 3565 posts

@Beebug: my c section looks like that. It's darker colored and raised - the pipe cleaner explanation is spot on. I hate it. The leftover scar was the worst part of the c section. Even though you can't see it, I'm conscious of it. The doctor said she can remove it with this c section. But I'm worried it will happen again. Ugh. I just wonder why it healed like that.

Whew! So much to catch up on.

*My appointment on the 6th was canceled because of the -40 windchill and foot and a half of snow outside. I was able to get in at the end of the week and we found out we're having a GIRL! Now we just have to pick a name… She's completely healthy in every way, weighed 1lb4oz (the day before turning 23 weeks). The only weird thing that popped up in the ultrasound was that we have a two vessel umbilical cord, with only one artery. The doc said that since everything else looked perfect, she wasn't worried and would schedule me for another scan around 34-36 weeks to make sure there was no intrauterine growth restriction. And my placenta has completely moved, so that's something else fantastic! Both baby girl and I are measuring right on. They didn't say anything about doing a GD test at my next appointment, so I don't know if I will have to have one. All of my urine tests have come back negative for sugar.

*No linea nigra so far for me. My mom never got one with either of her pregnancies and she has much darker skin than me, so who knows.
*DH got to feel her move for the first time last weekend. His face was priceless
*We're planning on doing Hypnobabies. The class starts in March, so it's cutting it a little close, but I'm excited! And we've been discussing hiring the teacher to be our doula.

There has been sadness, though…my husband's sister was due the same day as me, and she lost the baby this week. Went in for an appt and no heartbeat. She had a girl, too. They think it was an issue with her umbilical cord (though not the same one as ours). So many similarities, and yet I still feel my girl reassuring me. My heart is with my SIL, though I'm sure I'm one of the last people she wants to see right now. DH and I found a site with memorial trees and are planning on sending her a magnolia tree near the due date.

@HayleyJane: Congrats on your little girl! I'm glad everything is looking good with you and her so far. Hopefully the umbilical issue remains a non-issue! I'm so sorry to hear about your SIL. I can't imagine how she is feeling. The memorial tree sounds like a really thoughtful idea.

@HayleyJane: glad you finally got to have your appt, wasn't that cold weather awful!? Hope we don't have it again, but lots of winter left I guess, eeeep! Sorry to hear about your SIL

For anyone who follows me on Pinterest, I am sorry. I went on a pinning spree (maybe even beyond a spree, lol) but got so many nursery ideas, and I think picked paint colour for DDs room, #2s room, and our master bedroom! Might do some wainscotting in #2s room too! I'd like to DIY it elsewhere in the house, so thought it could be a good practice room, lol.

Hope everyone had a good weekend, i worked about 14hrs yesterday, one of my three big events between now and mid-March, and aside from an ambulance call at the end of the day, and two thieving MOMs (event was for elementary school aged kids 8-12) it was a good day/event, but tiring! My belly was sore by the end of the day with all that time vertical!

@Beebug: glad you survived your crazy busy weekend! Also I love the look of DIY wainscoting! I really wanted(want) to do it in our entry way but it didn't happen last summer and there is so much to do before the baby comes I don't know that it will happen this year either!

@Beebug: lol he was downstairs. Usually I don't get around to taking bump shots until mid-week, which means I'm home alone and he is my shadow. But I actually took this yesterday which meant my husband was home, so he was downstairs with him!

Also time is NOT going too quickly! lol. I mean, on one hand I am trying to really soak up as much lazy as I can right now. Every lazy weekend or lazy night my dh and I have I think--- cherish this because it's never going to be THIS easy again! But then mostly I'm so anxious for her to be here! 15(+) weeks seems like so long yet to meet her!

Yay for another bump pic! I have one or two to upload but I'm running away from work now to meet DH and go visit the birthing center we are considering!

So excited! I don't know what to expect. Still not 100% sure that this is the way we'll go, but we'll see

    Happy Monday Mamas!

So the orientation hour was interesting. The place is exceptionally clean and we got a tour of all the evaluation rooms and birthing rooms - fully equipped with beds, birthing stools, tubs for water birth, showers, hanging ropes to sway from, music player, candles,TENS machine, oxygen, the works. You have the option of music, dimmed lights, candles, aromatherapy, massages, you can even get coloured lights in your tub! Very impressive. You also get a personal doula who will not only be with you from labour to minimum 2 hours after delivery, but will also make home visits after to check on things. Monthly/weekly midwife appointments are also one full hour long! I can't even imagine that. I never stay longer than 10 mins with by OB/GYN. I don't like that my doc and I don't have a friendly relationship - it's all get in, get checked get out, so I think I might quite appreciate the hour long chat session. But wow, what is there to discuss for a full hour? Any of you have appointments that are usually an hour in length?

One midwife and one doula conducted the tour and seemed quite knowledgeable. Really, I have no issues about the place and neither does DH. The only question now is can I really go without pain meds, ha. My mom insists its a different kind of pain - not useless suffering, but pain with knowledge of the gift that comes after and that's easier to bear, but I am still concerned that I might be too wimpy. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

  38. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@Glitter: Sounds like a very cool place! I think you just need to decide what is going to make you feel more comfortable (emotionally)-- all the bells and whistles? Or the availability of pain meds?

Honestly I think if we had birthing centers like that around here I may consider it. The most important factor to me would be how close/easy it would be to get me to a hospital if I had a real complication. If I felt confident that my medical needs would be taken care of-- if necessary-- I think I'd likely go for it! I mean realistically, you CAN do it without pain meds. Women have been doing it forever. It might suck, but its not like you can really "fail" at it. Like it or not-- baby is coming and if no pain meds are available you'll get through somehow

  39. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@Glitter: Not meaning to be the downer aaaaat all, and sorry for seeming that way with what I am about to say. But only because of one sad/tragic story from HB that sticks out, what if something were to go wrong? Did you discuss protocol's and timing of decisions and when decision to go to hospital is made? How far is closest hospital? Who from them can come with and continue with care in hosp, or would it be a hand over to on call OB?

Not having access to pain meds is enough to scare me away from that option. I have a high pain tolerance, and yes it's totally a different kind of pain, but puking through contractions wasn't productive for me, get drugs, and then the epi was, I got to rest and have energy to push after 24+ hrs of labour, so not having that option, I don't know what I would have done.

I'm not big on the experience, so coloured lights and hour long chats aren't features for me. I'm so not a risk taker though, I want to be where all the resources are for Mom and Baby heaven forbid. I know there are different options for a reason though, and that place does sound fabulous!

  40. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@Beebug: Thats sort of what I was saying too with the access to a hospital. I guess I like the idea of birth centers in theory but they sort of scare me. I don't know anyone who has had an irreversible bad outcome at one, but I only know 2 people who used them and both of them ended up having to be transferred to hospitals because they weren't progressing and needed medical attention. I also know one person who tried to do a home birth with a midwife and she ended up at the hospital having to have an emergency c section because she labored 2 full days at home with almost no progress after her water broke. From statistics and what, these things seem to be the exception, not the rule. But considering I only know 3 people who went the non-hospital route and all 3 had to go to the hospital, I'd just want to make very sure I could get to a hospital quick if need-be!
