Anyone else surprised by how high up the baby seems to be at this point? I just got kicked 4 finger widths above my belly button!

@anandam: @Mae: haha my wording was probably super confusing!!! But yes...I was off from July 1st and went back July 15th the following year. I realize how lucky we are in Canada!!

@Mae: not me. Movement feels low to me - still below my belly button. But I kinda feel this baby is lower than my 1st.

Lol on the looking up of Canada Day, I didn't even question it! My hope is to be off til just before or after the Civic long weekend early August!
@Keds: DD will be 19m in May. Anyone I chatted with about transitioning away from the crib said sleep got bad when the switch happened, so I'm not even going there. Bought convertible cribs for a reason, they can stay with them and part of their bedroom as they grow! Our 2nd crib arrived last week!
I did get some movement on my way from work, good reassurance!

@Mae: I also made too much to stay home, but when it was a question of work or DS's health the answer was obvious. We made it work because we didn't have the choice.
@Mamasig: I also really wanted to work part time. The only problem we encountered was that there were hardly any infant daycare programs that offered part time, only toddler. Seems really stupid to me because you'd think more people would want that option earlier on.
@Keds: I don't know what we're going to do. I want to avoid getting second crib if at all possible. We still have some work to get done on our new house. I think when that's all settled and DS's room is fixed up, we'll put in a twin bed so he can start to get used to it. We'll keep the baby in our room for at least a few months so we'll have some time to see how things go before making a decision.

@Mae: I definitely feel some movement and kicks high up too. I love it when the baby does what feels like a flip! I think he prefers breech at this point though because most kicks are in my crotch.
papaya / 10343 posts
@skipra: We are lucky that our daycare does allow part time. We actually picked it for that reason. Since I work at home we are only doing daycare 3 days/week (at least to start) and she'll be at home with me while I (try to) work the other two days. So transitioning to a real part time job would actually be pretty easy for us daycare-wise.
And yes my girl is just rolling all the time. I've been feeling kicks so high lately, one almost up in my ribs this morning which was shocking to me this early. And more on the sides than I have felt before. She prefers hanging out upside down which I greatly prefer because when she is breech she uses my bladder as a trampoline. Interestingly, my doctor said most people find the baby being upside down to be more uncomfortable bc her head will press on my bladder. But I much much prefer head-on-bladder to kicks-in-bladder.

I know I have been MIA for a while from here, its been a crazy couple days for me, so I am going to jump into a few differnt conversations here at once....
My maternity leave situation sucks. I will be taking 12 weeks but only getting paid for 6 of them. It just sounds like such a short amount of time. and especially to not be getting paid for half of it. Also, I will be moving out of the city since we just got an accepted offer on a co-op and the new commute will be a bit more. at least an hour door to door. So while I'm on maternity leave I plan to start looking for a new job somewhere local to where we will be living. I really have no desire to come back to this job or the city so I am really hoping I am able to find something worth it.
For a while my kicks were feeling high but the last 2 days or so he feels really low - I can feel movement way down low and inside me and its really uncomfortable. I hope this is ok.
papaya / 10343 posts
@mrsog: congrats on finding a new place!! I hope you can find a new job closer to where you will be living! And I think feeling kicks ANYWHERE is good. When my LO is breech I feel her all the way down by my pubic bone. Definitely more uncomfortable though than when she is hanging out sideways or upside down.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@mrsog: Down low and uncomfortable kicks are the worst (but the best because movement is good!)!! Like right in my lady bits it feels like, and it's hard not to make a face if the baby gets me good enough! When will you move? Hopefully the right new work opportunity will present itself!
DDs current daycare offers pt, which we may take her up on for DD 1 or 2x a week in the Fall. Just to be able to do baby classes, or go for a run with #2 (I'm not going to get a double jogger and don't think I'm brave enough to run with 2!) but I am not sure she will be offering daycare by the time both will need FT care. We are going to try to find a home daycare in our neighbourhood (she's not far now, less than 5 mins) within walking distance of our house, or a nanny or nanny share. Too many variables at this point, but the thought of doing a nanny share with someone else's 1 or 2 other kids is super appealing, and for the cost of 2 in daycare, a nanny/nanny share isn't *much* more, but the value is huge. I am not even interested in the cooking/cleaning part of the word "nanny", but just the at home, controlled environment.....huge! We'll see.
I'm tired. I need to get sleep tonight and tomorrow! Keith Urban concert Friday night, and dog show Saturday with DH away (my Mom will stay over with DD Fri night!) but busy few days coming.

@Mae: I suppose he could have flipped. At both my 20 and 24 week ultrasounds he was head down so I just thought he was staying that way. you are right though - any movement is good and he moves a lot so I'm happy!!
apricot / 388 posts
@Beebug: I think we will be moving in the middle of march if everything goes to plan. so 32 weeks pregnant and moving - doesnt sound like fun but I am really excited!
papaya / 10343 posts
@mrsog: I think they are still small enough to flip freely. I feel kicks all over the top part of my abdomen regularly so I feel like she is sort of wheeling around in there from side to her head to the other side. And I'd say every 3 or 4 days she flips right side up and pummels my bladder for a few hours before returning to her handstand.

Also now that I have a vision for what room the nursery will be I have started thinking about to do in there. I think I am going with the Stork Craft Tuscany 4 in 1 crib. I already have a really nice oak dresser so I will get the natural color to match it. and I think I will go with DH's suggestion of robots for the bedding/theme.

@mrsog: I love the bedding!!
I need to go fabric hunting, I won't luck out how I did for DDs just stumbling across it, but I don't really have anything in mind at this point and this whole gender neutral business I can't imagine it will be anything too exciting.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: I got my fabric at fabric.com. Can't remember if I shared here already…. but here it is again if I have. The aqua is for curtains and the pink is for the bed skirt.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mae: Ohhh!! Thanks for link, wonder if shipping is foolish cross border. Silly border messes awesomeness up!
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: I always forget about that whole canada thing. Seems like shipping from Georgia to Canada shouldn't cost more than Georgia to Oregon…. but I guess it does since it is "international."
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mae: Yes. It's nuts. My biological father lives in GA and I bought our stroller on Amazon.com and had it shipped to him. Saved a boatload and he drove it up months later when he came up, I have used one HB'er in MI to ship babylegs to when they went on sale (75% off!) but it was only for US addresses, then she just mailed to me, and it was no big deal!
What will you use for crib sheet? Love both options, I was having a quick browse on the site and got excited.....need to just get walls done first. I am on the fence on wainscotting still, but then I won't have to pain half the walls, so I need to commit and get a plan going!
Here is paint colour (middle one) we think we are going to go with! Natural hardwood floors and espresso crib. I think I will do white/grey for bedding, in some simple pattern of some sort, not opposed to solid colour (grey), but we'll see.
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: Love the paint color! But I'm biased bc it looks just like the grey we have on our walls in there I just registered for a whole slew of fitted sheets in various grey and/or pink and/or aqua designs. I figured it might be fun to have a bit of variety. (all from amazon or babies r us)
So mailing things, like from the post office, is not super expensive to canada but shipping from companies is? that makes no sense, you'd think companies would want all that extra business!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mae: Ahhh I just love all of those crib sheets!!
I don't know what the difference is, customs? Like I can't even look at amazon.com. Seeing the price differences are crazy! There's obviously reasoning for it, but it's frustrating to not be able to get things sometimes! So many more options! I think free shipping from some companies is offered to US addresses, and maybe because I had the baby legs shipped from a residential address/person there were no border issues?
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: Maybe American companies are just grumpy at Canada for your awesome healthcare and maternity leave and they're like nope-- you can't have our cheap stuff too. Spiteful! lol
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@Mae: I love the color choices! It kind of reminds me of my nursery bedding for DS. Since it's another boy and it was barely used, I'm using it again.
I like the muted colors.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mae: lol. I know. I can't whine too much. Other trade offs that have a greater impact I suppose!
papaya / 10343 posts
@Mamasig: cute!! I'm not bothering with a bumper or blanket at this point. She won't/can't use them yet anyways. And I'm a quilter so I imagine when it gets to be time for her to have a blanket I'll make one.

Oh my, I've missed out on so much the last couple days!
@Mae: Love your fabric choices! I can't wait to see how the whole room comes together.
@Mamasig: Love your nursery bedding! So nice that you'll be able to resuse it for #2!
We got a lot of work done on the nursery last weekend, but I haven't taken any pictures yet. We brought our very turquoise (hand me down from ILs!) recliner up from the basement a month or so ago, but this weekend we realized that it would be really nice to have a second one up there. My husband should be home for bedtime routine usually and dividing and conquering (one baby for one parent) seems like a good plan. So now our room is totally stuffed full of turquoise recliners! Oh well, we are going for function over beauty at this point.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mamasig: Love the bedding!
@Mae: ohhh you are a quilter, I want/need to learn! My friend's Mom made a beaaaautiful quilt for DD, and has already offered to do another for #2, I am sooo excited. The handmade stuff (quilts, knit and crocheted) is so my favourite.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@Mae: I wasn't too smart with my choices when I picked nursery bedding. The bumper never stayed up because of the type of crib I chose. And then once we lowered the crib, you couldn't see the skirt! And the quilt is just decoration. All that money spent! Well at least it will be used for 2 kids!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@twodoghouse: function is huge! I may be borrowing my parents rocker/recliner for this one, we have a rocker, and another chair that is a recliner (but the recline doesn't "lock" in place) and knowing how much we used it with #1, I want one that locks into place, so they offered to loan us theirs!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mamasig: I had no idea/thought on the skirt hardly being functional once the crib is lowered! We definitely don't use it any longer.
apricot / 365 posts
@Mae: I'm feeling kicks up above my belly button too -- it's crazy. Especially when I'm sitting at my desk at work eating/drinking something sugary.
Crib bedding is probably the only nursery decor item I'll buy. I love this one, and it comes in toddler bedding too for later.
pomegranate / 3350 posts
@Mae: Love those fabrics and crib sheets!! Some of those gray and white ones are what I'd like to get for the nursery.
@Beebug: Pretty color! Are you going to do any accent colors?
@Mamasig: Love that bedding set but I totally get what you mean about some items not being useful. We used the comforter to pad the arms of our rocking chair.
@whodat: I love that! I also want to find items that can grow with him so I don't have to redecorate the entire room after a year or two.
@twodoghouse: Function is totally the most important thing. We got the Poang rocking chair from Ikea and the wood arms were awful because DS kept hitting his head on them when I would nurse him. We are definitely getting a more functional glider or rocker this time!

We are going to focus on DS's room first. His nursery was yellow and although I wasn't looking for a theme, SIL decided to choose it for us when she bought us this set: http://www.amazon.com/Graco-Piece-Crib-Bedding-Forest/dp/B007Z8N5UM/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1390410449&sr=1-2&keywords=in+the+forest+graco
I think we're going to make DS's walls gray (we have left over Gray Owl paint from our old house and I love that color) and use brown accents from his old room's décor.
For the nursery I'm thinking of navy walls with gray and white. I think we'll just buy a couple new sheets for the crib, a new chair, and dresser that can double as a changing table. Unfortunately we need a ton of work done in the nursery before we can even start (electrical, new windows, ceiling, trim, flooring) so I may change my mind a thousand times before then!

Had my appointment and glucose test today!
My glucose test was a fasting 2hr test, so three blood draws and a lot of hunger - apparently the heads of OB and MFM at my hospital are researchers and think this is a better test. I wonder if either of them has ever been pregnant because the supersugar on an empty stomach gave me diarrhea and made me lightheaded. Lovely.
Check-up was okay, but I'm still measuring about 2 weeks ahead and have gained 22lbs (at 24wks) so got a little lecture about watching portions/sugar/etc. so I don't grow the baby too big. It's annoying because I really feel like I'm eating/exercising normally, not much different from prepregnant, not binging or overdoing desserts. Trying to trust my body, but the midwife I saw today gave me doubts.
@Mae: Next appt is 2/20. Also I'm definitely feeling high up and low down and side movements simultaneously. This LO is all over the place! And my ribs are sooo sore recently, everything's already smashed up there. But apparently I'm also growing a hulk baby since I'm huge, so that might be the culprit.
papaya / 10343 posts
@anandam: oh man that sucks they make you do the longer one! also that they gave you a hard time about your weight. I feel like everyone just gains differently and unless you're actually binging-- your body knows what it is doing. I'm sure that you're not growing a hulk baby lol.
So new fun (lol no) thing. I was just walking around the grocery store, not doing anything strenuous, and I got a stitch in my side! What the what?! I'm guessing I maybe just wasn't getting enough oxygen or something? I talked to my doc at my last appointment how I've been having some trouble taking deep breaths and she said at this point the uterus is squishing my diaphragm up into my lungs and that is just going to get worse, but is normal. So maybe I was breathing too shallowly. I dunno. I got home and sat down and I feel fine now, but I hate being concerned that at 25 weeks I can't even go grocery shopping like a normal person without having to stop because my side hurts.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@anandam: that sucks your midwife gave you a lecture about weight gain! I was always scared of that - I ended up gaining 40 pounds and had a big old baby. Some women just gain more! Don't let her make you feel bad! Your body is doing what it needs to do.
