@Glitter: Oh nice, I had heard it doesn't taste fruity at all. I regularly drink black chai or vanilla/cinnamon or orange tea with no sweetener. So if it is no more bitter than those I could do it. I'm convinced! I just emailed my midwives to make sure they don't recommend against it for some reason, but as long as they give me the okay I'll order some this week!
@Beebug: Pineapple? I haven't heard this, but I pineapple and eat it a lot anyways so if it helps?? Also I didn't know this at the time but I've seen on the boards since I joined that pineapple is supposed to help fertility? Interesting since the month I got pregnant we were on a pineapple kick and I was drinking pineapple spinach smoothies every morning.

@Beebug: yes! I'm planning on eating loads of fresh pineapple as well. Basically I'm up for trying anything safe that will encourage LO along.
cherry / 129 posts
@glitter, @beebug, @mae- my doula also suggested raspberry tea amongst a bunch of other things. Hubby bought some. I will be launching into it this Friday. Week 35 officially starts.

@Glitter: @Coopersmama: Whats pineapple supposed to do? And what other stuff was recommended? I know walking, bouncing on a yoga ball, spicy food, and sex. All are on the slate for regular use once I hit 37 weeks and feel "full term" haha

I think (fresh only) pineapple is supposed to soften the cervix? If I remember correctly!!!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
I'm all for the bring on labour wives tales, why not right? Except for Castor oil, too many gone wrong stories there! Some decent ones too, but not worth the risk. I love pineapple and I liked that tea, sex definitely isn't a bad thing, and I loved getting out to walk the dog, so yes......all will be exercised near the end!!
papaya / 10343 posts
@Beebug: Interesting! We only eat fresh anyways. How close to your due date is it supposed to start being effective? I should start picking up a couple a week here soon I guess!
persimmon / 1281 posts
@Mae: I read that the enzymes in pineapple cause contractions which tone the uterus but that's as far as my understanding goes. Garlic specifically, and not simply spicy food or curry - must contain garlic. Also nipple stimulation and acupressure. I understand massaging that line just above the heel and somewhere just above the buttocks are the induction pressure points! Gonna try them all.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Mae: Not sure! I love pineapple, so I started somewhere in 38w I think? So yummy, gives me canker sores though!!

I've been drinking red raspberry leaf tea since the start of the third trimester. I saw Birt & Tang red raspberry tea at Homegoods so that's the only reason I got it.. and it was delicious! I think the only difference is that tea has raspberries and the leaves so it's really sweet. I haven't been able to find it again Didn't drink it last time but it's also in my prenatals and I did not have a difficult time pushing DS out. I think he was out in 3 pushes. He was also tiny so take that with a grain of salt!
I have also heard that Italian food - eggplant parm in particular can put you into labor at the very end. Must have something to do with the garlic.
I heard about the pineapple too but that you need to eat an entire one for it to really do anything. Like in one day or one sitting. I don't know how that's possible!
pomegranate / 3350 posts
@Mae: I think I get BH quite often and have for several weeks now For me, my entire belly gets really tight and I get an extremely strong urge to pee that usually lessens after like a minute or so. I guess the difference between that and some of the pushing the baby does is that the entire belly gets really firm. For me it starts in one area and spreads.
@Coopersmama: That label is funny! DH would kill me if I pranked him like that!!! How did yours take it?
nectarine / 2019 posts
@Mae: I'm having them at first I wasn't sure, but now it's clear thats what is happening.
So as a doula I will say the following thing, regardless of what you eat or drink, your body will not go into labor until it's ready. So although there are lots of things that may help you along, they won't actually do anything until it's time anyways (castor oil sometimes being the exception).
Now I have quite a list that I can share of things that have shown some signs of effectiveness in helping dilation and contractions begin when your cervix is favorable and will do so when I get home.
It's important to remember too that the definition of full term has recently changed from 37 weeks to 39 weeks

I feel like I've been cursed too. Woke up in a puddle of drool. Flipped over my pillow went back to sleep and it happened again!
Everyone is so prepared. I'm only 33 weeks so I feel like I have plenty of time. I plan to focus at the end of the month. Nursery is ready though since we are just reusing DS's.
papaya / 10343 posts
@junebugmama: I know the definition changed, but I thought it was changed to avoid people scheduling elective c-sections at 37 weeks because SOME babies are not ready then? I.e. if your kid comes naturally at 37+ then they are ready. And I know all the "stuff" to help you along doesn't actually put you into labor. I don't want to force her if she isn't ready! But it seems like all that stuff could maybe encourage her along or make labor a bit easier if she is ready. Which is why I thought if I start it all around 37 weeks, I'm doing everything I can to make sure that when SHE is ready she has every advantage in making a smooth exit haha.

I've been drinking raspberry leaf tea since sometime in the second trimester. To me it tastes a little gross hot -- like perfumey. But if you make iced tea with sugar and lemon it's awesome. I try to keep a pitcher in my fridge.
apricot / 365 posts
@Mae: Also foot massages and pedicures. Can't hurt anyway! I had a pedicure at 39 weeks last time and he came 3 days later, and the nurses were all complimenting my toenails. I'm already thinking about when I want to do a pedicure this time. They do a pregnant mama pedicure at this fancy spa near my work.
pomegranate / 3350 posts
@Mae: That is exactly why I'm drinking the tea! I think the baby is in a posterior position and with them talking induction again it makes me nervous that I'll need an epidural before he gets into a good position which will either mean a lot of trouble pushing or a C-section. My only plan to help my cervix along is a lot of walking, sex, and orgasms. At least that is what the midwife recommended last time. Did work but also can't hurt!
papaya / 10343 posts
Just got an email back from the midwives and they said I'm welcome to drink the tea if I want to at this point, 3-4x/day! That is more than I thought! I might be able to do 2/day... I don't think I can do 3+/day! They said they also suggest evening primrose oil for the same reason starting at 36 weeks, and we can talk about that at my appointment next week.
@whodat: I was actually planning to do a pedicure right before my due date, but a friend asked me to get one this week with her and I can't say no to friend time. I'm probably too cheap to do 2 pedicures in a month or so, so I doubt I'll go get another before my due date unless maybe if I go late and just really want to treat myself.
papaya / 10343 posts
@skipra: haha right. I like evening walks and sex and pineapple and garlic anyways. So worst case scenario they are useless... okay? At least it will make me feel like I'm doing something, which I think is mentally healthy for a "do-er" like me. As for the yoga ball bouncing, probably not the funnest thing but also good exercise so that is useful regardless. And the tea... why not try?
apricot / 388 posts
I am not ready to try anything to move him along.. I still have to much to do! lol but pineapple was a big craving of mine in the beginning so I can probably get back on board with that!
our closing is on Friday and next week we will move in so I'm starting to feel better about that. I had my 35 week appt today which started exams and the Group Strep B test. she said head is down and cervix is still tight so thats good. get the results for the GSB test at next appt.
I was feeling BH a while ago and then they slowed down but now when I get them they feel a little stronger. Like a little crampier instead of just uncomfortable.
honeydew / 7230 posts
You ladies and your labor inducing strategies are making me laugh. I need to keep these babies in for another 2 weeks at least so none of that for me! My contractions are back big time (despite the procardia to stop them!) so I'm imposing even stricter bed rest on myself until my appt on Friday. Hopefully I don't have to call my dr today because I know she will just send me back to the hospital for monitoring. I don't think these contractions are real labor or anything, but I am a little worried by their consistency and perseverance over the procardia.
About BH - for me the BH happen at the very top of my bump and feel like my whole uterus squeezes for a second and then the top goes rock hard. Definitely uncomfortable but a different feeling than my contractions which is sort of a grinding feeling low in my pelvis and back. The contractions definitely crest or peak at a certain point too. I have no idea if that's how they feel for other people - just my 2 cents!

@sungirl: I'm only 33 weeks as well, so I feel like I have quite a bit of time left! So funny how at 33 weeks, I feel like it's too early to really start getting things ready, but once 35 weeks hit, it's going to feel like there's so little time left!
@twodoghouse: oh no! hopefully everything stabilizes and you don't have to call your doc today.
papaya / 10343 posts
@mrsog: Yay for closing! I have my GBS test at my 36 week appointment next week. It will be my first non-u/s pants off appointment! lol I was telling my husband the other day how I always thought that pregnancy meant people all up in your hoo-ha all the time, but other than my 3 u/s it has been totally non-invasive. I know all that is about to go out the window though! Although I don't actually know if my midwives do cervical checks or not... I think they tend to not unless you ask?
@twodoghouse: Sigh, babies are persistent! I hope further restricted bed rest will stave off the real contractions for another few weeks for you!
@cookie_dough: Around 32-33 weeks I felt like I still had ages left... but at this point I definitely feel like I need to be ready at any moment! I know most likely I'll go late and I've probably got at least 5 weeks left, but I do know a few IRL friends who went between 35-37 naturally and it makes me nervous!

@Mae: My last post wasn't directed at you, just the first sentence. The rest of it was just so that I got it out there and could make myself feel better.
There's actually big differences found between mamas with babies born at 37 weeks and babies born at 39. A big difference is success with breastfeeding. The closer you are to 40 weeks the better the stats are for success.

Just popping in to see how all of you ladies are doing!
@Mae: @junebugmama: I just caught the end of your conversation about term being 37 vs 39 weeks and thought I would share my experience. I got sent to L+D for monitoring on Monday because I was having contractions and I had fallen, so they wanted me on the monitors. I wasn't anxious to get baby out, necessarily, but I know I'm dilated, and I was curious what they would say as far as progression goes, etc. Well, for a number of reasons, it turned out to be a complete debacle, but the *most* irritating part was that no less than 3 people said to me, "well, you're only 38 weeks, so no need to rush things." First, I was in no way trying to rush things-I was sent there! And secondly, I was 38+5, which means that today, less than 40 hours later, I'm now "officially" full term. I get that there is a difference between a 37+0 baby and a 39+0 baby, but is there really a huge difference between a 38+5 baby and a 39+0 baby??? And it's not like I was asking them to induce me or anything! I swear, by the time I left, if one more person said, "you're only 38 weeks," I was going to punch them.
Annnnyways, that's my two cents. I'm just glad that at this point, if I have to go in, I'm full term by whichever definition you choose!
kiwi / 619 posts
@Mae: LOL on the pants off appointment! Actually, at my OB, we are sent to the bathroom to do the GBS swab ourselves...so it's still a "pants-on" appointment In fact, last pregnancy, I didn't have a single pants off appointment, including the 6 week post-partum appointment (since I had a c-section). I was also under the impression that during the c-section, I was nicely covered by a sheet with just a little area cut out of the sheet for the incision (you know...like you see on tv!). But DH revealed to me a few weeks later that no...I was basically lying there fully naked. haha, I"m so glad I didn't realize it at the time! Ignorance was bliss in this case
I totally thought I had gotten through an entire pregnancy and "delivery" without having to do away with modesty!
nectarine / 2019 posts
@LovelyPlum: I hate that they don't round up. When I had J2, I was 36wks5days and they tagged him as a "preemie" even though he weighed 8lbs 15oz and had no issues.
papaya / 10343 posts
@LovelyPlum: so glad your fall didn't end up being serious! But that does sound super annoying. I do get that they have good reasons for moving "term" to 39 weeks but yea... I guess I feel like whenever the baby wants to make an appearance after 37 I'm not going to worry about it. I'm not going to be drinking castor oil or asking for membranes to be stripped or wanting to be induced of course! All the stuff I'm talking about doing are really safe at any point in pregnancy, I'm just thinking to focus more on doing them at that point (especially because I have a gut feeling I'm going to go late and I'm scared of induction so anything I can do to make a nice uterus and cervix for delivery makes me happy). I guess I'm hoping by starting to do more of that stuff around 37 I might coax her into coming on time rather than getting evicted at 42... although if she did come at 37 I wouldn't be worried about it.
@cookie_dough: oh interesting! I wonder if they do that for me too? It would be kind of funny/unexpected to make it all the way to delivery without a single person except the ultrasound techs getting an eyeball down under! I guess because on sitcoms and whatnot I feel like people always talk about how you lose all modesty via pregnancy? I don't feel my modesty has been compromised at all. I had more invasive stuff done trying to figure out a tricky string of YIs a few years ago than I have during this pregnancy haha.

This is very interesting! I don't know if I will be trying any of these any time soon, not only cause I am only 33 weeks but also because I don't think it will be safe when I have placenta previa or is it??
I went to my 2 week follow ups today. Baby is still breech but with a very strong heartbeat I have a rash on my breast (very red) that is also very itchy. She suggested I see my dermatologist, who I am seeing this Saturday. She doesn't think is anything serious, but better to make sure before I start breastfeeding.

I started off grooming for every single appointment, only to have my pants stay on. Not like I was disappointed or anything, but I went through the work of grooming for nothing! Now that I can't see down there anymore, I don't know whether to risk not grooming or have DH tackle it for my 36 wk appointment.
I do plan to get my membranes stripped though! I understand its painful and uncomfortable but I really think going past my due date might be more frustrating for me. I hate to admit this, but in all honesty, I really want this baby out before the 40 wk mark,, as long as he's ready that is. I'm kinda over the lethargy and sluggishness and pelvic pain and back pain and uncomfortable sleep, or no sleep, and excessive peeing,... Movements still make me smile, but how much more awesome would seeing his face be, u know?!
nectarine / 2019 posts
@cookie_dough: We do the swabs ourselves too. I won't have a pants off appointment either, since they don't do cervical checks at all
persimmon / 1281 posts
Also, I just had a pedicure done today! I told the lady "if you decide not to paint my toes, I don't care. That massage alone is totally worth it!" This was about 3 hours ago. No contractions yet so I'm guessing she avoided the induction spots, lol.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
@cookie_dough: I'm laughing at the c section comment! I did realize everything was pretty much on full display but tried to ignore that. However, my sister and DH were all into seeing what was going on. How weird that my sister has now seen my organs on the outside! No modesty at all no matter how the baby comes out!
I don't even remember how many no pants appointments I had - maybe 2? Ugh, I don't even care about grooming and such. I'm sure they've seen worse!
kiwi / 619 posts
I'm wondering if I will go this whole pregnancy without any cervical checks like I did last time. I'm guessing I won't be so lucky There's a chance I might have to fly in the next few weeks (DH's grandfather is very very sick and it's likely that we will be flying for a funeral in the next couple of weeks - so sad
) So i'm assuming that in order to get permission to fly, I'll have to have some kind of check done. Also, unless baby is breech (i.e. automatic c-section), he did say that he would start checking near the end to see if I was dilating at all, etc. since that would affect whether I have a vbac or c-section (since they won't induce me).
kiwi / 619 posts
@Mamasig: hahaha ya, DH didn't really want to see anything, but when he stood up to announce the sex of the baby, he definitely got a full view. It took him a few seconds to focus in on the right spot because he was a bit overwhelmed by the gore. He said that at some point "something" fell on the floor (I'm guessing a gush of blood?) and they just threw a lab coat over it. haha lovely!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
I had checks done from 37w appt onward last time, stretch and sweep, whatever they do down there.....and I went overdue (had her at 41w!) I know my next appt (35w) is a pants down appt for the GB Swab, 36w will be pants on, then 37w onward, pants down!
It is foolish, but so long as I get for another brazillian at some point, I don't care about the appts, I want one as close to delivery as possible, so post-partum there is none of that to worry about. I am going to get my legs done soon though, very over trying to reach!
persimmon / 1281 posts
Oh my brazilians... had them twice ever, each time promising never again! Funny how I opt out of brazilians and opt for natural labor.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@Glitter: lol. I find this pregnancy I am sooooo much more sensitive having them done. So brutal. tmi, but I'm hairy, so it's soooo worth it for me. The lady that does mine is quick and I just deal.
I had laser hair removal done on my legs and underarms and it lasted about 6 months. It was such a glorious 6 months, and the hair came creepin' back. They said I was a good candidate too (dark hair, light skin) and I was going to have my lady area done, thaaaaank-goodness I didn't, had that grown back too? I would have gone mental.
persimmon / 1281 posts
@Beebug: my sis did electrolysis on her lady parts because she couldnt deal with the frequent shaving or pain of waxing. Im not sure im brave enough for that! Thankfully DH cares less than I do so ironically the pressure has been off since I got married.
