@Cupcake: That would be awesome! I think I also do it because every single person we know has an older DD and a baby DS, so in my head I think all babies are little brothers! Can't wait to find out though.

@charmed: I've been mainly avoiding people, too! It doesn't seem like many restaurants have listed mocktails. On a slow night when we were out, I asked the bartender if he could make something for me. He did seem a little thrown off by my request that it not be really sweet--I guess mocktails are usually considered for the girly, not-of-drinking-age, crowd!

@Happygal: @charmed: im actually going out tonight, luckily it us mistly meal based and my bff is there who knows. I have handled bbqs etc really well because you get your own drinks but I think I'm going to have to play the not feeling well card tonight (which is true). Kind of wish I wasn't such a heavy drinker before!

I think I just heard the heartbeat on my doppler!! it was 160s and even got to 170, but I'm still thinking boy.

@Happygal: When I worked in a restaurant in college, a girl asked for a "virgin martini". He gave her an empty glass with an olive in it, lol!

@Espion: I feel like <140 boy >140 girl supposedly! was right for my DD.

@sorrycharlie: Hmmmmm, that goes with my "girl" vibes! Ours was 167 bpm.

@charmed: The only people who really don't know are the people at my church and I see them multiple times a week. :x I can't wait until my bff is back in town so I can get this out of the way!

@sorrycharlie: I was wondering if you tried to find it again. Yay! DDs was always in the 160s, so it was right for us.

@Happygal: haha, I love that reply, "I always thought it would be cozy..." I'm trying to remain optimistic about having a newborn in January, but it IS kind of a bummer of a month. I keep thinking, though, that babies really start to get fun between 4-6 months old, and that will be great for us when our littles are that age next spring and summer.
I had one amazing mocktail about a month ago - blackberry lemonade with lime, basil, and simple syrup (usually with vodka, but I just asked for it without). It was seriously delicious.
I actually had a small glass of wine last night to celebrate DH being done with jury duty (it was a grueling case) - it was really nice, I had it with pasta for dinner and we sat on the back patio while the sun set. I didn't feel buzzed or anything, but I did feel a tiny bit guilty.
I love all these updates from everyone!! This is such a fun group.
pomelo / 5000 posts
@keepcalmcarrie: that mocktail sounds delicious. Maybe I'll start experimenting with drinks at home and I'll share if I come up with a good combo! I always wanted to serve on jury duty, but my friends who have been there, done that say it can be really tough. Glad you had what sounds like a relaxing weekend.
I agree that January doesn't seem ideal. But I remember thinking May would be perfect, and then watched my friend in May with her newborn. It was already too hot to wear the baby outdoors, and they were always worried about her overheating, etc. On the nursing binge days, my friend would be stuck inside while seeing pictures of people being out and about. I guess there's no such thing as the "perfect" time of year.
We are moving into a rental house with a fireplace. My husband has already scoped out where to buy firewood for us so he can make it nice for us. He said we should buy one of those lights to help with seasonal effective disorder.
@espion: ha! What do you think the girl had in mind with a virgin martini? Did you like bartending in college? My friends who did it made good $$!

Whilst I would never have chosen January for a baby before I think it's great now after watching my friend and her early jan baby. They have really enjoyed this spring/summer because he is old enough for them to have got their shit together and let's face it, it's not like I was planning anything better for jan/Feb, snuggling a newborn infront of a nice cozy fire sounds perfect

I'm not particularly upset about having the baby in January but I do feel bad that it's birthday will always be in the gloomiest time of year, weather wise, and potentially overshadowed by new years ( my due date is January 1st) but we'll just have to make the best of it.
grapefruit / 4213 posts
I just keep telling myself that my LO won't mind having a winter birthday because it means parties at fun places like the indoor trampoline park, Chuck E Cheese, ice skating rink... We'll have an excuse to hold those fun kids parties.

Having one January baby already (born in cold cold boston) I think it's a good month! This past year might have been hard with the super long and cold winter but hopefully it won't be as bad next year. The proximity to Christmas etc is the worst part in my mind. I thought it was nice to be cozy at home with a newborn though and then when we were more up for going out and bring outside it was starting to be spring
@Happygal: I have a photo of LO sleeping in her little lamb chair in front of the fireplace about 3 days old. So cozy!
nectarine / 2079 posts
Where I live we have mild winters, so January doesn't bother me at all. Like @bhbee: I just wish it were a little further from Christmas just to spread gifts out throughout the year more.
pomegranate / 3577 posts
Okay guys. I'm a January baby and I love it.
I always kind of felt like it was the "real" new year. I liked being not the oldest, but not the youngest of my classmates. The proximity to Christmas never bothered me, but my family has never been very diligent about birthday parties anyway.

I love all the positives about having a January baby! Keep 'em coming. I've been looking at some pretty darn cute winter baby hats. It's the little things.
I met a mom last night at a cookout with a baby around 5-6 months, and she was talking about how nice the timing of things has been. I almost talked about being due in January and how that was nice to hear, but I'm glad I caught myself since we're not telling people yet!
@bhbee: that sounds very adorable.

@keepcalmcarrie: that mocktail sounds delicious!
I would have never chosen January either, but I think it's really going to work out great for us. Plus my friend had a baby this January, and she said I can borrow maternity/baby clothes since I'll hit the same seasons as she is.
I broke down and bought some maternity jeans (capris) today. They are sooo comfortable! How comes no one told me wearing maternity pants feels like wearing yoga pants? And they have the added bonus of making my belly fat look like a tiny baby bump instead of fluff
If you haven't already, go buy maternity pants!!

@charmed: I spent all yesterday with my top button undone (combo of nausea and bloatedness) it inspired my to buy some so I should have some seraphine skinnies coming off ebay soon. Going to save them for bad days at first though.

I think January will be an okay month for a baby! The only thing I'm a little nervous about is having a newborn in the middle of cold & flu season. The boys were born mid-March, so we didn't have to worry about any illness stuff until they had all their first round of vaccines. I think we'll just hole away in our house for two months!
pomegranate / 3601 posts
I never really imagined a January baby either but since it's a reality now it's ok
It usually doesn't get too cold for too long here so we should be ok. Besides isn't there this saying: There is no wrong weather just wrong cloths. I try not to worry too much since people in the northern countries all have babies year round and bring them outside and they also turn out completely fine.
pineapple / 12793 posts
I already have a January baby and am obviously willing to have another.
It was actually really great to be tucked away and snuggling with a newborn in the worst of the winter. I'm in Toronto so I'm serious about winter.
I didn't worry too much about cold/flu season because we had a limited number of house guests and everyone was really cautious about bringing in illness.
I was pregnant during the holidays and got to indulge in yummy christmas cookies. No traveling for the holidays! It was tough not seeing my family for Xmas, but I saw them all shortly after anyway.
I was cute pregnant and not uncomfortable pregnant over the summer. And then able to be comfy in leggings and sweaters all fall/winter.
By the time the spring arrived LO was stronger and more active so we had a great time outside all summer. I can't imagine having to stay in nursing a newborn during the heat of July.

so I never updated, that I can remember anyway, but I had my first appointment Friday afternoon. Just bloodwork and meeting with the NP but still.
we have a couple plans "in place" for avoiding my disaster in triage with my first LO. I feel a little better about it all, especially if they allow me to have my membranes ruptured at 39 weeks (she said this will be a possibility if I'm 3 cm dilated, ESP with my history of precipitous labor).
heard the HB again yesterday..170 bpm! my first ultrasound is a week from tomorrow
pineapple / 12793 posts
@sorrycharlie: Good appointment! I'm still shocked by the trouble they gave you in triage! My mom had two great experiences there.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@oliviaoblivia: yeah, the NP was like "well not to defend anyone, but MOST first time labors are 18 hours on average! (not my 3.5 hour.) so it's likely they just didn't think...but they absolutely should listen to the patient. we all need that reminder once in awhile."
so she encouraged me to get there at the first sign of anything (whether false or not, she said to insist on being monitored for contractions I might not even feel), make a scene if they try to make me go sit again (she said to say "I feel pressure!!!" ha!).
she also said that with my history, she didn't want me living in fear, particularly if my husband is at work (an hour away!) and having a toddler to worry about. so she said it's likely if I'm dilated that the OB will allow me to have my membranes ruptured at see what happens (at 39 weeks).
lets all hope I dilate some by 39 weeks! I already am in dread fear of delivering on the floor at home alone. haha.

@sorrycharlie: glad your appointment went well, and that you were able to come up with a plan for managing triage with this baby!

@sorrycharlie: Yay for a good appointment!
I'm actually really looking forward to a January baby. Like @pmrlady: I'm not thrilled about the idea of a 1/1 due date but winters here aren't too harsh. The cooler months just allow for a lot more time to get things done here because once it's hot, you can forget about it. Also, we only have one January birthday in both families so it's a pretty simple month. I'm also looking forward to being pregnant during Thanksgiving!
I'm beyond ready for my appointment on Wednesday. Looking forward to just checking in with my OB and making sure things are looking fine. We're travelling this weekend and I just feel like I have a million things to do before we head out.
Hope you ladies are doing well!
pomegranate / 3601 posts
@sorrycharlie: yay for being able to hear a heartbeat! That must be so nice to just be able to get the doppler out whenever you feel like it. Glad your midwives/OB have a plan for triage. I'm really scared of making it in time too. My first labor was a little longer (6h from 1. contraction to birth) but still we were out of L&D within 3h... It doesn't really help ease my fears that DH is usually gone M-Th. Maybe we'll ask my mum whether she can stay for a couple of days around my EDD.
I got poked with a needle again today in order to make sure I haven't caught B's weirdo virus... Oh the joy...
On a happier note we booked our flights for our summer vacation. We'll see whether B's still such a good travel companion like he was last year.
grapefruit / 4213 posts
@sorrycharlie: Yikes, I'd have the same fear given your history!
@Pumuckl: How old was he on the last trip?
grapefruit / 4731 posts
@sorrycharlie: DS had a really fast heartbeat! Like 160+ all the time. When I was a baby I had a really slow heartbeat so they told my mom I was going to be a boy. Maybe my family is just the opposite. Hehe.
I think Jan is a great time to have a baby because you aren't uncomfortably pregnant during hot months.
I had my appointment last Friday, my "real" appointment. Baby is doing great. I had to take a ton of blood. Everything is great except my GD number is higher than the mark and now I have to take the 3 hour test. BOOOOOO.
My doctor e-mailed me and said don't worry, even if I have it it's not that bad but let's be postive and hope that I pass my 3 hour test.
It looks like I still bleeding if I over excert myself. I had to run around this weekend to do a ton of errends because we are going to a hawaii wedding in 2 weeks and the bride wanted a specific dress code for guest. Weird I know but we tend to respect the bride and grooms wishes so we went out and tried to find the cheapest things that fit her "suggestions" for what to wear. After I rested the bleeding stopped. I'm so glad I have a desk job so I can totally work without worrying about that.
pear / 1846 posts
@Raindrop: i'm intrigued, what were the suggestions? Do you think the bleeding is from your cervix? Hoping it stops altogether for you, that must be annoying even if you have heard a nice strong HB!
nectarine / 2079 posts
@Raindrop: Glad baby is looking great! Sorry you have to deal with bleeding, but at least you know the cause of it.
grapefruit / 4731 posts
@Snowdrop: @Radish: Yeah during my Friday appointment my doc said not to worry about light spotting, again if it's heavy aka soak a panty liner or accompanied with painful cramping I need to go to the ER. She says exercising, s3x, and even the exam she was giving me might cause bleeding.
I will let you guys know when it stops. I talked to mrs. panda and it happened to her for a quite a while and she's still pregnant so that was very comforting!
Edit : I notice I didn't answer snowdrops question. The suggestion is just light pelvic rest, aka no exercising, try not to go up and down stairs (impossible for me, I live in a tri-level townhouse) and just not exert myself. But again she's not worried about it if it happens once in a while. Definitely not bleeding through my cervix that sucker is shut tight.
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
@Raindrop: I don't know about @Snowdrop:, but the "suggestion" I'm curious about is what the dress code suggestions were!?! I've never been to a wedding that had any more of a suggestion than formal, semi-formal, casual, etc.
