@sorrycharlie: Same. I give myself those .3 as bonus 2nd trimester. I think 12 weeks is a milestone in itself of the odds of loss going down dramatically + morning sickness and such being gone typically, so I think that is why some people associate it with the second trimester.

Hi ladies! Sorry I've been MIA - went on a beach vacation last week, and spent both weekends driving 12 hours with a 16 month old. Well, DH drove, I "entertained" (with a lot of help from the PBS Kids app on our iPad, oops). J actually really surprised me in many, many good ways. He didn't sleep much in the car seat, but was pretty happy. And for a man who WILL NOT NAP in any crib but his own up until this trip, he adjusted really well after one terrible nap attempt in a hotel Pack n Play the first night. I guess he just got wayyy too exhausted by all the sun and sand to fight it.

Anyway, I'm definitely feeling movement from this little bean. I don't think my bump has gotten any bigger, it's just been hanging out at the 5-months-pregnant stage for awhile now. My boobs, which didn't grow/change at all in the first 12 weeks, are making up for lost time and are SO sore. Haven't had nausea for several weeks, so that's nice. I'm starting to get this thing where I can't eat a lot at once or I'm really uncomfortable (which was a bummer on vacation with all our dining out). That happened last time too, but wayyy later in the pregnancy.

Nothing else is really new. We're 95% decided on a boy's name (Benjamin, nn Ben) but are torn between several girls names (Rose, nn Rosie; Penelope, nn Penny; and Anna - my original favorite). Anyone else thinking about names?

@Happygal: I counted 14 weeks as the start of the second trimester (half my apps said 14, the others said 13).

@keepcalmcarrie: so exciting that you're feeling movement!!
We've talked about names a little, but mostly I give suggestions and DH vetoes them. We decided to wait until we know the gender to have more serious discussions.

@keepcalmcarrie: I have a girl name in mind, but we've shelved the conversation until the anatomy scan. DH likes weird names like Plutarch. It's worth it to only fight half the battle.
I've been feeling a lot of movement lately too. Last time I didn't really feel anything until 21/22 weeks so it's been nice to enjoy the little goldfish feeling this time.

@keepcalmcarrie: LOVE Benjamin. I'm glad your son enjoyed the trip! That's wonderful.

@pmrlady: I know! I'm sort of ready for a real bump already so I can stop feeling like I ate too much lol

@Happygal: I counted 14 weeks as the start of the second trimester.

@keepcalmcarrie: @oliviaoblivia: wow that's so cool that you feel movement already, it's nice to get that reassurance. I'm not feeling anything yet and I'm trying to pay attention too. I've heard that second time moms feel movement earlier but I wonder why that is....

So I have appointments to add to our fabulous list (half because I am afraid I will forget - my pregnancy brain is BRUTAL!) - my 16 week is August 13 and my 20 ultrasound/appointment!!!!!!! is Sept 8.

  8. Cupcake

    apricot / 495 posts

@pmrlady: I wonder if it's because we know what it feels like already, or more in tune. I've been feeling movement for a couple of weeks and the first time around I didn't feel anything until around 18weeks.

So I never updated... I got a call Monday my office that I have a uti. So on top of my 3 colds I've had now I have a uti. The antibiotics they put me on are awful. 4 times a day for 10 days on an empty stomach. What the hell. I eat like every hour to keep myself from not feeling nauseous. This is some kind of pergatory for naughty pregnant woman.

Okay, question. Are y'all's bellies still way bigger at night than in the morning? The size of my belly (even though there's definitely a little bump) in the morning freaks me out and makes me wonder if everything is okay. (I know, I know...I need to chill out.) Then, by bedtime, it's HUGE and I can't do a darn thing about it.

Anyone else? And second-time moms...is this normal?

Also, disclaimer: I know that in like a few months I'll be wishing so hard for a tiny belly. I really do know.

@mfa_lady: this happens to me too. I blame all the water and chocolate throughout the day. That may just be me though

  12. oliviaoblivia

    pineapple / 12793 posts

@Cupcake: You poor thing! That sounds torturous. Hope the antibiotics work they're magic quickly.

@mfa_lady: It happened to me last time and again this time. I read that it had to do with your stomach muscles being tight in the morning and loosening during the course of the day.

@Mrs. Confetti: Yay for anatomy scans! Are you finding out?

@pmrlady: In the beginning most of the movement is so faint and subtle that it could easily be confused for gas. I think because I know what it feels like from #1 I was able to discern the early movement better and wasn't dismissive of it like I was last time.

    @oliviaoblivia: thanks girl

I called to find out the details of my pump coverage through insurance. I'm eligible for a medela pump in style advanced! And crazy enough, it will be here in a week. I was like whhhhhaaaa? I'm not due until January. And she was like, well you'll be well prepared. Sweet. I have a ameda purely yours from baby 1 so I'm excited about getting a medela now. Anyone else check into pumps yet?

@Cupcake: @oliviaoblivia: @sorrycharlie: Thanks, guys! I mean, even in normal life (aka when I'm not pregnant, haha) my belly is bigger at night, so I should know it's normal....but I just needed some reassurance.

  16. keepcalmcarrie

    persimmon / 1096 posts

@pmrlady: @Cupcake: Partly because we know what it feels like and partly because our abdominal muscles are shot, probably

@mfa_lady: yes! In the morning I'm like - "oh look these jeans still fit" but by the later afternoon I'm switching to yoga pants

@Cupcake: I've been looking into pumps, and think I decided on the Medela Freestyle. But with my insurance it looks like I can't order until I give birth or I'm past my due date.

@mfa_lady: Yup, normal. Here is an example of a blogger I follow at 35 weeks (with her 3rd) http://julia-transition.blogspot.com/2014/06/baby-3-35-weeks.html

@Cupcake: Ugh, could they not give you a better antibiotic? The one I just took for mine was only twice a day and with food.

@keepcalmcarrie: or are we just extra gassy and blaming it on the baby??? Haha

@Cupcake: oy. So so sorry. Those meds sound hellish. At least you got the good pump news - that is awesome! I have a medela from last time that I am hoping to just use again.

@oliviaoblivia: totally finding out. Cannot friggin wait.

@mfa_lady: 10000% normal. By bedtime I look like I am easily 6 months along.

Okay, I'm full of questions today! I'm traveling for work next week (3 hour flight on Tuesday, 1 hour + 3 hour flights on Thursday). Do I need to be getting compression socks at 16 weeks?

If this is a totally dumb question, I'm sorry. I just don't want to be miserable while on the job (or when we come home, for that matter) because this is one of my first big projects at my new place! Thanks in advance.

  24. pmrlady

    apricot / 316 posts

@Cupcake: Oh no that's awful! I hope the infection goes away fast. I would ask the pharmacist if it really needs to be taken on an empty stomach. Sometimes they say that initially but if people have stomach aches afterward, they change it to 'with food'. Or maybe your doctor can give you a different antibiotic altogether.

@mfa_lady: haha, love your questions. Another vote for totally normal on the belly issue. Sometimes in the mornings I wonder whether I'm really pregnant. Now on to compression stockings. I just went to get fitted for mine last week. But I have major problems with swelling by the end of the day and a family history of varicose veins. They also help with my lightheadedness so even the first time around I always wore them and was especially thankful for them on the plane rides I took every week (I nearly fainted once before wearing them). I guess you have to decide whether it is worth it for you.

Oh my next appointment is 08/07/14 not sure whether I put that on the list yet

@mfa_lady: I am totally bigger at night

I don't think you need compression socks unless you feel like you should have them. For my first kid I never used compression socks at all. But I might be weird.

  27. Cupcake

    apricot / 495 posts

@pmrlady: I was told that it helps to be taken on an empty stomach so it's better absorbed. It's better to take it with food than not take it at all but either way it's upsetting my stomach! I might call the dr tomorrow to see if I can get something different if it doesn't get better!

  28. Snowdrop

    pear / 1846 posts

@mfa_lady: after seeing what people's legs look like in old age if they aren't looked after I would totally wear the socks personally. I mean, what is there to lose?

  29. namaste

    persimmon / 1313 posts

@Cupcake: How awesome for your pump but so sorry about your crappy antibiotics. Ugh how awful.

@mfa_lady: Eh same here! By bedtime, I look six months pregnant. In the morning, it's like nothing is happening. Just lots of bloating Good question about compression socks! I'm looking at flights soon so I hope you ladies can help us out.

@Mrs. Confetti: Hah, my pregnancy brain is AWFUL. Usually I just have a terrible short-term memory but my memory is gone down the tubes. It's all cloudy up there when I need to remember something lol.

  30. Cupcake

    apricot / 495 posts

@mfa_lady: I was in compression socks from 34 weeks on last time. How torturous is it to get those damn things on. I spent at least 5 minutes every morning wrestling those damn things on. I can remember being 39 weeks and just sobbing at my vanity because I couldn't squeeze my sausage toes into them without getting out of breath.

Check out this ankle after 8 hours in compression socks

  31. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@mfa_lady: I never wore compression socks my entire pregnancy last time. I traveled around 24 weeks by plane. Honestly, compression socks never even came up during it, so it wasn't a conscious decision, I just never knew anyone needed them during pregnancy.

  32. keepcalmcarrie

    persimmon / 1096 posts

@mfa_lady: I never wore them with my first, but I never had any swelling either. I do have low blood pressure, so if that becomes an issue with lightheadedness I might consider them. I'd only get them if you're worried about swelling or BP.

  33. bhbee

    cantaloupe / 6086 posts

@Cupcake: Ohhh I remember this. I am praying for less swelling this time.

  34. Pumuckl

    pomegranate / 3601 posts

@Cupcake: Oh wow that looks like it hurt, it luckily never was that bad for me. I didn't like the getting them on part (gloves - the type you use to clean around the house or for dishes - helped a lot with it though) but they definitely helped with my well-being so I didn't mind wearing them too much. I can pick my new pair up tomorrow. The thought of wearing them in the 90° weather though is less then appealing

Other than that I have started to spill the beans at works. I told HR and my direct boss on Monday, the founding members on Tuesday and have started to let some of my co-workers in since yesterday. It makes the whole thing seem more real.

On another note the children's hospital called yesterday to inform me that B still has parts of the virus in his urine so the changing diapers with gloves, no kisses and no sharing of utensils continues

  35. keepcalmcarrie

    persimmon / 1096 posts

@Pumuckl: Ugh, poor B, and poor you! That is tough, I hope this terrible virus clears up soon and you can get back to normal dipe changes and smooches.

J has a fever (again) and we are/were planning to go out of town tonight - my husband has an interview in a little town 2.5 hours away tomorrow, for a great job, and I really wanted to come along with J and check out the cute downtown/houses/parks/etc. The company got us a hotel room. I guess we're just going to wait and see how he's feeling later this afternoon. He was pretty miserable last night but seems better this morning. Still hot, but better.

All these recent nights of sickness, where he's been up every 4-5 hours, make me nervous for the newborn stage again. I really love my sleep and have been spoiled by a great snoozer (J started STTN 8 hours at 8 weeks, 12+ hours by 4 months). I hope and pray LO#2 likes his or her ZZZs as much as J.

  36. sorrycharlie

    hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts

@Pumuckl: oh my gosh I am so sorry you are dealing with that!!

@keepcalmcarrie: poor thing I hear you on being nervous about nights - my daughter didn't STTN regularly til after she turned one (and even then, teeth disrupted it on the regular). I get up a million times a night to pee and I'm already ragey. BUT, I remember thinking the *same* thing when I was pregnant with her (worrying about being ragey/tired toward a newborn) but those early hormones and adrenaline made it almost fun to get up in the first few weeks. I was obsessed and couldn't get enough of her, lol.

  37. Pumuckl

    pomegranate / 3601 posts

@sorrycharlie: @keepcalmcarrie: Thank you for you commiseration. The good part about the gloves was though that when he starting throwing up (at no other time then the second half of the world cup final last weekend - we still got to see our home country win though ), I had them on hand and I think they helped immensely so that I didn't get bug. Hope it stays that way. Luckily my DH was sick with a cold (incl. a fever) at the same time so he stayed home with B...

  38. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@sorrycharlie: I feel the exact same. LOs sleep has always been inconsistent, but I am more annoyed with it now when I know she CAN sleep through the night and I just want to sleep as much as I can these days. It is really hard to get too frustrated with a newborn who is just adjusting to the world and who you are getting to know.

@Pumuckl: I'm so sorry about your son. Do they have an idea about how much longer he might have to stay there?

I'm behind on everything, including our little due date club! Moving is always exhausting, but I'm feeling it even more now that I'm pregnant.

We heard the heartbeat yesterday. I could have listened to that for a long time. Next week is our NT scan--cannot wait to see this baby!
