New Year, New Babes - January 2015 Moms

@oliviaoblivia: I know it is silly, but I feel better if everything goes exactly the same as A's pregnancy since it went so smoothly. She was head down at the 28 week ultrasound (which I am not quite 27 weeks yet). Being breech is like the most minor thing that could go wrong, so I'm just happy everything else looks perfect for the time being.

@mfa_lady: I feel so behind you early Jan moms - everything still seems forever away for me.

@Radish: If it makes you feel any better, I feel like from week 26 to week 30 was a complete blur...which is why I think I felt so blindsided by 30 weeks. Haha!

@pmrlady: too bad baby was being shy

Did/is anyone else getting a 3D ultrasound? We decided to skip it and get photos of the two of us instead, but now I'm second guessing myself. My office won't do another ultrasound unless there are issues, so 20 weeks will be a long time to go without seeing the baby!

@Radish: hope you pass your glucose test! And that the baby turns, but you do have some time yet.

Do all your doctors tell you what position your baby is in? My last few appointments have just been super quick- weight, blood pressure, belly measurement and heartbeat - no real feeling around or checking baby's position.

@charmed: I had another ultrasound yesterday because my new doctor likes to be thorough and not just trust other practices - the doctor herself didn't even bring up the fact that she was breech, so I think they really only start checking around 32-34 weeks. For LO1 I had a 28 week growth scan and they saw she was head down then and I think later on she would feel my belly to confirm she was still head down.

We aren't doing 3D because I find that I still can't translate it to what my baby will actually look like and I would usually rather put that money elsewhere. I was a little disappointed she didn't really get a good profile shot yesterday, but I think it was partially due to the fact that I had to lay on my left side for most of the ultrasound or I was going to pass out.

@charmed: Our practice runs out of a hospital, so they have ultrasound machines that just switch back and forth between 2D and 3D. We have 3D images from our scans at 20 and 24 weeks, but the cord likes to float right across her face so in both, it kind of looks like her face is melting off. Ha! I wouldn't have done one if I had to pay extra.

@charmed: we got one for DD1 because my grandfather was very sick and I wanted him to see her before he died. I did again for this one because I felt guilty getting it done for #1 and not #2. #2 had her legs crossed in front of her face the first time we went so we had to go back. We got OK pics this time, they were better last time but still cute.
I'll be getting a growth scan in two weeks to check size. DD1 was 10# and 22.75 inches. I'm hoping this one is smaller.

@charmed: No 3D ultrasound for us I think. Also, she doesn't ever tell us but I usually have an idea. I'm pretty sure her head is down right now but what do I know? lol

The first baby shower is this weekend and I can't wait!

@namaste: Aw, so fun! Hope you have a great time! I have them the weekend of the 15th and 22nd. I'm hoping I won't feel too huge and uncomfortable by then.

@charmed: We didn't do a 3D U/s for the first kid. I don't think we will do it for this kid either. I heard they are amazing though but 3 more months and we can see them in person!

@namaste: Fun! I hope you get some cute stuff and have a blast hanging out with family and friends.

@charmed: My appointments are quick too - measure fundal height, blood pressure, and weight. Last time they didn't check the baby's position until my 32 week appointment. Also no 3D ultrasound for us.

@Radish: Oh no, do you know what was causing the feeling that you were going to pass out?

@namaste: Yay! Have a great time!

Anyone having any cravings lately? I had some pretty strong (and weird) cravings the first time but not too many with this one.

  13. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@MapleMoose: No crazy cravings, but have started nesting like crazy, which mostly means cleaning a lot and cooking a ton of stuff to freeze. I hope all this stuff is still good in 2 - 4 months! Haha.

How is everyone carrying these babes? My gal is up WAY high, and sometimes it's actually sort of hard to breathe. When my midwife measures fundal height, she is moving my bra around to get high enough, not even kidding. I guess it'll be really clear to me when she drops eventually....

  15. MapleMoose

    grapefruit / 4213 posts

@mfa_lady: Ah yes the nesting phase. Are you doing freezer meals or just freezing extra portions/leftovers? I have a short torso so there isn't much distinction between high/low lol

  16. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@MapleMoose: A little of both. I'm freezing leftover portions of big pots of soup and stuff, and I have also made a couple of pans of meat loaf/casseroles as well as bagged one of our favorite crock pot meals for the freezer, too. I'm a little worried about how things will hold up (mostly the casserole because the one I made already has rice in it) but we'll see! I guess soggy food is better than no food at all. Ha!

@mfa_lady: Wow your baby is up high!

I have no idea how LO is positioned at all. I'm trying not to worry about till they tell me.

My first kid was always head down though. My OB was like oh he's still head down he must like that position! For this kid I have no idea yet... I don't remember when they started telling me when my first was head down probably not till later I bet.

@mfa_lady: My second is the 22nd as well! I'm driving 8 hours up to the day before so I hope I'm doing well. My girl is pretty low.

    @Radish: @Raindrop: @MapleMoose: Thank you ladies! I hope it's a good time.

  19. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@Raindrop: Baby girl was head down at 24 weeks, but that's pretty much meaningless. Ha! With as much "swimming around" as she could do at that point (straight from the mouth of my midwife) I have no idea what position she's in now. Maybe this is a dumb question, but if there are no other ultrasounds, how do they check position in the meantime? Cervical checks? Feeling our bellies?

  20. MapleMoose

    grapefruit / 4213 posts

@mfa_lady: I don't have any additional ultrasounds so the doctor just feels my belly to determine baby's position.

  21. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@MapleMoose: Gotcha. I won't have any ultrasounds, either, unless something happens that warrants one. January is right around the corner!!

  22. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@MapleMoose: It happened with LO1 too, it is just them pressing on my belly while I'm on my back. I get nauseous and just feel light headed. This time I ended up sweating a lot as well.

@mfa_lady: most doctors can tell just by feeling the belly, I believe.

  23. MapleMoose

    grapefruit / 4213 posts

@Radish: Thankfully it's not some underlying issue.

  24. Raindrop

@mfa_lady: From what I remember from my first birth, my OB was able to tell by where she was able to find the heartbeat. She was always able to find the heartbeat under my belly button and said yup still head down. I had one U/S (the low grade one in the OB exam room) on my due date and she showed me quickly his feet were at the top of my tummy. We were only able to see the feet because babies are pretty big by your due date.

  25. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@Raindrop: Ooooh, interesting! I never thought about the heartbeat before. That makes sense, too, I guess. Also I love thinking about those feet at the top of your belly--although this little lady is up so stinking high that already her rib kicks kill....who knows what they'll be like when she's doubled in size!

  26. Raindrop

    grapefruit / 4731 posts

@mfa_lady: I just read what others said. I think OBs probably can tell by just feeling around your belly too! I just remember my OB would tell me the position from where the heartbeat was. She might not be as seasoned as other OBs people have here! I'm actually one of the first patients of my OB.

  27. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@Raindrop: Yeah, I distinctly remember mine last time feeling around my belly and mentioning where her foot was and that happened to be where I always got kicked when I rested my arms across my belly. Otherwise I wouldn't remember her trying to look for her position.

@mfa_lady: my midwife tells me how baby is lying by feeling too. She finds it so quickly! I asked her to show me but i could make out that there was sometjing in there but not what it was.

@mfa_lady: my first was always high (I could never breathe, and could barely fit food!) but this chick is LOW!

    Scuse my dusty mirror. Ahhaha.

@sorrycharlie: Cute bump! It is pretty low though! Hehe.

@mfa_lady: I am having SO much pressure on my ribs, especially during BH contractions. I remember this from #1 too, she dropped sometime after 32 weeks (not visibly from outside, I could just feel the pressure off). Someone just told me I was carrying low, but truthfully I just don't have much torso length!

Little man currently head down based on OB's guess from feeling belly at 28 weeks, and where I feel kicks. With #1 I could tell based on feeling the hiccups suuuuper low.

Any other 2nd timers feeling totally huge? I have to be where I was at 8 months with #1 and I'm only 29 weeks. I'm a little scared of what that means, but hopefully it just stays the same.

  33. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@sorrycharlie: YES to barely being able to eat. I pretty much have to eat all day long because I can eat so little at a time!

@bhbee: i feel huge too compared to #1. Like how do I still have 12 weeks to go? And definitely gaining more weight with this one. Sigh. Everything is so swollen.. I didn't have that at all with #1 either. This pregnanxy has just been harder on me physically.

@bhbee: I feel absolutely ginormous. I'm only 5'2" so maybe that had something to do with it.

  36. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@bhbee: I'm not having any BH contractions yet, but I do get some mild cramps sometimes. And because of the location of them, I feel like I can hardly move!

@MrsHansen82: yeah I'm short too. it's funny how you spend all this time wishing the bump would show, and now I'm wishing it was smaller! I got my first "are you having twins" comment the other day when asked how long I had to go . . . thanks, Lowe's cashier.

@bhbee: Haha you totally made me laugh out loud at home. DH looked at me weird! I'm sure you are not *that* big plus I think people have no idea what carrying twins really look like.

@Raindrop: oh yeah, she was totally clueless! this was followed by her asking me if we were done having kids or did I "have one of those husbands that had to have sex all the time". umm . . . . what? pretty funny.
