So I've been thinking a lot about my OB office and I'm just not sure how I feel about them. When I was seeing my RE I totally trusted her and even though some decision in hindsight didn't work, I trusted that she knew what she was doing and was making the right calls to the best of her knowledge.
But I do not feel 100% confident in my OB practice :-/. I'm mostly having concerns over how they had me do the glucose challenge and told me I failed and didn't have me do the 3 hour. I've been doing some research and my number is coming up in the pre-diabetic range, which we already knew I was. I tested my blood sugar last night and this morning and it's been in a perfectly normal, not even pre-diabetic range. I'm going to keep testing until thursday, when I have an appointment with a diabetes counselor, and see what she thinks.
I also got kind of annoyed at my appointment yesterday because the nurse tried to insist I needed a pelvic exam to get tests done which I've already had with my RE. Apparently no one could be bothered to read my chart :-S. They got kind of annoyed with me when I told them it was unnecessary. And then she showed me how to use the glucose meter wrong, which resulted in multiple errored tests and my fingers feeling like pin cushions.
So IDK. I want to continue going there because they have mostly female associates and because I can deliver in the hospital that I want to. But I'm starting to feel the need to question every single thing they tell me.

@MrsCB: I can relate to how you're feeling, which is why I attempted to change OBs (didn't go so well). I don't know how it works where you are, but here we have 3 main OB offices in our small-ish city, each with 10-15 doctors. When my mom had my sister and I, she said there were a ton of offices with just a few doctors at each one. I think it's because of the expensive malpractice insurance now or something. Anyway, I feel like I'm a number most of the time because they have so many patients...it's just frustrating. I'm so, so glad that I'm a patient at the MFM office now. It's much smaller and they can get to know you better.
I'm sorry you're feeling this way. It really is important that you trust your doctors. Are you going to try to switch if it doesn't get any better?

@Cara M. 17: Awww yay!! Have fun
I have an appointment today with my regular OB office to go over family history and listen to the heartbeat. Less than 4 weeks until my anatomy scan!!

@Ash: Thank you!
@lilteacherbee: Thank you! Your gender scan will be here before you know it! How exciting!
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
@Cara M. 17: well a little less exciting since we already know the gender, but I'll take any excuse to see him!! It's on our anniversary too (just happened to be scheduled that day) so that's pretty cool!
clementine / 825 posts
@lilteacherbee: Still exciting to get a visual confirmation We scheduled a gender scan with a local company that does 3d/4d ultrasounds outside of insurance. It's not a medical office it's really just for fun since you can go at 16+ weeks. If my midwife allows me to keep that appointment it will be the day after my birthday and 3 days before our anniversary!

@Cara M. 17: Awww that's so fun!! We were going to do the same thing because my OB schedules them around 20 weeks. Well I ended up getting scheduled for it at my perinatologist instead and they do it at 17 weeks. We were going to do the 3D one on our anniversary (June 11) and the perinatologist office scheduled it for that day by coincidence. So now we aren't going to pay extra for the 3D (I think we'll probably do one around 30 weeks instead).

We had our appt yesterday and got to hear the heartbeat again. This time, the baby moved while we were listening! I seem to be measuring right at where I am--15 weeks. Our next appt is June 12, and then we will schedule our first ultrasound.

@Mrs. J: Glad all went well today!
We got to see Baby M today although he/she was not cooperating with the ultrasound tech at first! Everything looks great and my due date of 11/23 is right on target with growth!

@Mrs. J: @Cara M. 17: Yay for good appointments! So exciting!!
I went over my family history for what seemed like the billionth time today (just did it last week at the MFM office). Heard the heartbeat and everything is good I'm finally able to go to the office and not think about bad memories from the first pregnancy, which is nice. Next OB appointment is June 17th. I feel like I'm at the doctor all the time between the 2 different offices, but I'm not complaining. I love the extra reassurance!

Today is my appointment... It's just a pap but I'm gonna have them find the heartbeat too... and I'm a nervous wreck. prayers baby is growing big!

I had my 1st OB appointment this week. It was pretty lackluster, but I think I've been so used to such care and attention with my RE experience. She said a few things that were a bit annoying to me - she told me that since I'll be 35 when I deliver the baby I'm labeled "elderly". She said she thought that was funny - but I don't know why she mentioned it at all. And she also said that my fertility clinic must have been"happy to see me"...ummm, what?! She said, "Because you're young and healthy and not a complicated case" - yeah...once again why I moved on to an RE once I met with this OB at my 1 year mark and she said "it just takes some people a while". She also kind of scolded my husband when he said "I told you so" with regards to some pain I was having. He said it was gas, and I didn't think it was, but my doctor confirmed it was. But there's no need to scold my baby daddy! Anywho - it was fine, got to hear the heartbeat, get the schpiel about what to eat, etc. and give 5 vials of blood. I'm kind of glad they rotate doctors in this practice, because this doctor was fine for an annual pap, but I'm not sure I want her as my OB. Oh - she also said that they won't do MaterniT21 testing. They just won't. Um, yeah. So - on to the next doctor in the practice.
Also, I'm still on pelvic rest after the blood from last week. I'm hoping at my genetic screening appointment next week that I can find out whether or not that is lifted. I'm glad I get another ultrasound at that appointment. I'll be 13 weeks, and I want to see if the blood has gone away...and see my cutie baby too

@MrsCB: Are you still thinking about changing OB practices? I think it's hard to transition from the RE experience into the OB experience. The care is different - or at least that's what I'm finding. Did you find out anything new from the diabetes counselor yesterday?
@Mrs. J: @Cara M. 17: Glad to hear that your appointments went well this week!
@lilteacherbee: I'm glad you're getting the reassurance and care that you need.
@Ash: I hope everything goes well today! Enjoy the heartbeat

@sweetooth: You're right, the switch from RE to OB office is WAY different. I'm holding off for now, I think if I can get this GD stuff resolved, I'll feel better.
I had a good class with the diabetes educator yesterday. I showed her my numbers, which have all been perfect, and she was really happy. She said she didn't even know me, but she'd been worried about me. I asked her if I should ask for the 3 hour test to confirm the diagnosis, but she said not to do that to myself and the baby. She made me an appointment for Thursday with an endocrinologist, so I'll go over all my stuff with her and see what she thinks. Doing the blood sugar testing isn't that bad and I can tell I have some instability, but mostly it's just making me low.
I've also just been eating a modified version of the GD diet (trying to balance carbs w/ protein, but no measuring or restricting carb amounts) and I haven't really had any bad numbers. A couple times it took me a minute to get a sample and the number was like 2 over, so tried again 5 minutes later and it was back well within the normal range.
So I'm still not convinced I have anything worse than the pre-diabetic condition I was diagnosed with months ago. I guess we'll see what the endocrinologist thinks.

@sweetooth: Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I am also elderly - I turn 35 a week before my due date. The medical term we usually use is "advanced maternal age" (or AMA) which is questionably less annoying than elderly... maybe she just thought she was being funny with the word. The reason 35 is traditionally considered AMA is that the risk of having a chromosomal abnormality (Down's syndrome, among others) reaches about 1/200 at this age. One common method of testing a fetus's DNA for a chromosomal abnormality is amniocentesis, where they put a needle into the amniotic fluid and draw it out. This procedure was considered to have a risk of inducing miscarriage of about 1/200, so at age 35, your risk of having a child with chromosomal abnormality is approximately the same as your risk of miscarriage. More recent studies suggest that amniocentesis is much safer than this and actually probably has a much smaller risk of inducing miscarriage. Before the maternity 21 test became widely used over the past year or two, amniocentesis was offered to women of advanced maternal age and covered by insurance. This is all essentially historical background anymore as medical technology has evolved. Hope I didn't just bore you to tears. But anyway there is actually a reason why she pointed out that you will be 35. FYI
So sorry to hear that they don't offer the MT21 at that practice. It takes some groups a while to adopt new technologies. A lot of insurance plans don't cover it right now, and according to our genetic counselor it runs about $2700 (at least in our area).
I hope your next visit is better!!

@Cara M. 17: Thanks!!
After my appointment, I had to stop at the mall to pick something up for my mom and I might've ended up at baby gap and I also might've bought a bunch of clothes. I got some crazy deals cuz I hung out by the clearance--I got 3 heavy fleece sleepers for 6 bucks a piece and 3 onesies for $4 each. I should post a pic of the sleepers.... so cozy for our winter babies.
clementine / 825 posts
@Ash: Those are awesome prices for baby gap! Did you find all gender neutral? Post a pic!
honeydew / 7909 posts
@Cara M. 17: heck yeah! Regular $26.95. And I might have bought 1 girly onesie and 1 girly sleeper otherwise gender neutral. hahaha I'll post a pic! The cream one is fleece and the other 2 are quilted.

@Ash: Cute!
I have a boring appointment tomorrow, still looking forward to going and hearing the heartbeat (I don't have a doppler like a lot of you, so it's been a good month or so since I've had any reassurance that baby is still there!)! Hoping that I'll be able to set up the gender screening for the next few weeks!!!

@ms.janedoe: I have a doppler but don't really use it. We've used it twice so Friday's appt was scary for me! So I can relate! Good luck tomorrow!
We're cruising right along!

@Ash: So cute!!
I had a midwife appointment today. Nothing too exciting, but I did get to hear Baby M's heartbeat on the doppler, and she let me record it on my phone! I also got the OK to get my hair highlighted this week (thank goodness), so I am pretty excited for that! Hope everyone else is doing well this week!
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
@Cara M. 17: Yay so glad it went well! I got my hair highlighted on Saturday perfectly safe! My mom actually asked me "are you sure that's ok to do?" She KNOWS its a huge deal for me to give up some of the crazy that goes along with pregnancy after a loss. I mean, I made DH call the Mexican restaurant a month ago to ask if the queso was pasteurized... Pretty sure I won't do anything to harm this baby!

@lilteacherbee: thanks! I have been staying away from Mexican food for that same reason!

I finally had an appointment with my midwife yesterday. Really, it's not that late, I'll be 14 weeks tomorrow, it just feels like I've been pregnant forever, lol. But this was the first time I'd met her, although, I've heard a ton about her and spoken on the phone several times. She's very grandmotherly, although, I swear, she might be a grandmotherly lay midwife, but she's not backwards and she brings more to a birth than just a poke sack full of various leaves and potions, lol. Anyways, it was a great appointment, although, of course, I forgot about all the questions I was going to ask, lol. And I might be a large woman, but I'm healthy as a horse. Like, really, the urine strip (which tested for way more things than any other doctor or midwife I've ever seen) was perfect and so was my BP and everything. Good feeling. Cricket was brilliant too, with a good strong heartbeat in the 160s. So funny- I still feel like it's a boy in there, but every time I've heard the heartbeat, it's been 140s and over, so theoretically it's a girl. I guess we'll see. Which reminds me, I need to call my backup doctor and schedule my next visit with her, which should include the anatomy scan. Yay! I'll see the midwife again in 4-6 weeks, when she has time between births to set up an appointment day (she lives 5 hours from me, but has regular appointment days in a much more central city). Anyways, that's all I have to report...

I just got back from my appointment, I heard the heartbeat and everything looked good! I'm up 6lbs though, womp womp. I was able to bump my anatomy scan up a few days so now it's June 18!

@shellio: I think you're right that my OB might have thought she was being "funny" by telling me I am considered elderly since I will be 35 when I give birth. But she could have just spoken about the requirements of someone who is of a certain age. I go in tomorrow for my 1st Tri Genetic Screening. I'm hoping for great results.
Just curious - my birthday is November 9th - are you a November birthday too?

@Ash: Yay for a successful appointment and for cute little warm baby clothes
@ms.janedoe: I hope the highlight of your boring appointment was that heartbeat
@Cara M. 17: How fun to record the heartbeat on your phone!
@FarmWifeGina: Glad to hear your appointment went well. Just curious - why do you say that the heartbeat over 140s means you're carrying a girl? Is that just from previous experience?
@MrsTiz: Glad your appointment went well! I'm sure the new weight is that cute li'l baby you're carrying
pear / 1571 posts
@sweetooth: No, it's just an old wives' tale. Heartbeat below 140 means a boy, above 140 is a girl. It's pretty much a complete myth, but I have heard that there *may* be some credence to it if it's a resting heart rate. But who knows.
nectarine / 2705 posts
@Ash: @FarmWifeGina: I'm not up on my pregnancy myths and old wives' tales Thanks for keeping me in the loop
pear / 1571 posts
@sweetooth: Haha, sorry, I kinda said it tongue in cheek, not thinking that not everyone might know that one. I've heard that pretty much since I was 5 years old (I'm the oldest of 10, so I was around for lots of pregnancy talk when my mom visited with her friends).
nectarine / 2705 posts
@FarmWifeGina: Wow - the oldest of 10. I'm sure you've definitely heard a lot more pregnancy talk than I ever have. I'm the youngest of two - and haven't been around babies all that much...or pregnant women!
pear / 1571 posts
@sweetooth: Yeah, just a little bit. And don't get me wrong, I love my babies, but I've also been a second mother to most of my baby siblings, so I have put in my time, I WILL be done with diapers by the time I'm 30, lol.
