@DigAPony: I have Ina May's Guide to Childbirth so I will definitely look into her breastfeeding book. I've worked in OB in the past so I feel like I have the basics of nursing down.... but there will be so much to learn when I'm on the other side. :))

@sarah.clarisse: Welcome and congrats! I was wondering if you were due late October or November based on your welcome post.

Welcome, @sarah.clarisse! You'll find most of us normal and a few of us maybe not so normal, lol.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
@anbanan15 The little one could very much end up being an October baby since I'm due on the 7th. I'm just hoping it doesn't end up on Halloween! I don't really want to share a birthday with a major holiday.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@sarah.clarisse: That's my worry, too. We're due Nov 9th, so I'm hoping to avoid Halloween, Nov 6 and Nov 8th. We'll see!

@sarah.clarisse: awww I know what you mean. DS was born on Easter and this baby could very well come on Thanksgiving (EDD 11/22, but DS was 9 days late and my midwife said women usually follow their own pattern)...Thankfully for my kids Easter and Thanksgiving are a rotating holiday so they won't always have to share their birthday with one.
On another note this baby could very well come 8 days early and share a birthday with myself! Or even earlier and share a birthday with my brother!

@anbanan15: I'm due the 24th, and while they're not going to let me go late due to GD, depending on how close he comes to his due date, his birthday could fall on Thanksgiving some years. Not ideal, but what can you do.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@MrsCB: Yes not ideal but totally do able! I just feel bad for the kids with birthdays Christmas Eve/Day. I think that is the worst holiday to have to share a birthday with
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
@MrsCB: DH's birthday is the 24th and he was born on Thanksgiving!
coconut / 8472 posts
@anbanan15: Yeah my mom's is 12/23, which she always hated. I don't think Thanksgiving is *too* bad, especially since it falls on a different date each year. And while he's little it'll be nice because he'll always see family around his birthday.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@MrsCB: Silver lining! hehe I think it would be neat if this baby was born on 11/24 so our kids shared the same day of birth, just different month...or of course on Thanksgiving so they both had holiday birthdays when they were born.
BTW I totally expected the hospital to do something special since DS was the first baby born on Easter there - you know like they do for NYE/NYD babies. No dice. Not one member of the hospital staff even remarked about how he was an Easter baby. I thought it was pretty cool.

I'm actually due on Thanksgiving this year - 11/28. I'm ok with the baby sharing that holiday occasionally. I just hope someone saves me some Thanksgiving leftovers
@MrsTiz: My birthday is 11/9 and sometimes it falls on veterans day or election day. The biggest bummer for my birthday was when I was 17 on election day. So I couldn't vote in my first election until I was in college instead of high school, like all of my friends.

@sweetooth: We've already planned that my parents will be coming here to cook us Thanksgiving dinner, so we won't have to miss out since we can't travel :-D.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@sweetooth: Oh I hadn't even thought about that!
Nov 6 is DH's snotty cousins birthday and Nov 8 is my parents 30th wedding anniversary! I feel bad they've canceled their big trip so they'll be here for baby!
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@sweetooth: My mom did this! DH left the hospital to shower and stopped to have Easter dinner with my family then came back with a big plate of food for me! So much better than the hospital holiday meal.
Bummer about the election.

@MrsCB: I signed my mil up to bring us thanksgiving food if we're at the hospital. Hahaha!

@MrsCB: I am dreeeaaddding holidays this year. We'll have a new teeny baby and all of both of our extended families live in town so we have overly busy days already..I don't need 50+ people clawing at me trying to touch LO with their winter germs! Ick.
coconut / 8472 posts
@MrsTiz: Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how we'll handle this either. For Thanksgiving it'll just be immediate family, since I won't be able to handle a large crowd. But DH has a ton of family in the area and I feel like we're going to have to make an appearance at one of the weekly family dinners so they can meet Declan. Maybe I'll wear him? 20ish people plus kids and all their germs in December makes me really leery about letting people hold him.
For Christmas I think we'll have a smaller crowd. Usually we go to my grandma's with all the extended family, which is 5 hours away. But I've already said we're not going any further than my parents', which is 3 hours away. Family can come join us there if they want to, but I think only a couple people will.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@MrsTiz: @MrsCB: I was just going to suggest wearing too! Baby will most likely be so comfy sleeping against you in the carrier at that age and people will not want to disturb him. It will allow you to be hands free to mingle, but still give you an excuse not to let people touch/hold baby that you don't need to explain since most people automatically think baby carriers are a pain to maneuver baby in/out of.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@MrsCB: We have to split our time, Thanksgiving isn't so bad because it's only 2 houses but it's an all day thing.
Christmas we wake up, go to my moms to open presents, go to MIL's to open presents, go back to my moms for our big whole family one, then off to DH's grandmas for their whole family thing.. So that is a 9am-7pm day.
I'm going to get a Maya ring sling and wear him..I just have to pick the pattern!
coconut / 8472 posts
@MrsTiz: I'm thinking about a Maya or a Sakura Bloom ring sling. I had a Beco Gemini but decided I didn't really like the pattern, so I sold it to another Bee. I'll probably get another one though.
@anbanan15: Do you have any opinions on soft sided carriers versus slings in the newborn period? I've seen YouTube videos of the Beco being used with newborns, so I know it's possible, but I've heard people say they didn't work great for them until baby was a little bigger. And I love the idea of ring slings, but I'm afraid I'll struggle with getting DS in it.

@MrsCB: You've got your Turkey day meal all planned out Mmmm, turkey...sounds so tasty right now!
@MrsTiz: My parents anniversary is 11/30. I'm thinking of the baby as an anniversary gift Hopefully your parents can book their trip again.
@anbanan15: Yeah - it was one of the times where I kind of couldn't stand being the youngest in my class. It's something I'll definitely think about with our kids. And I bet that home cooked food tasted SOOO good!
We usually put off discussing the end-of-year holidays for a while because it always seems to cause so much stress. I tried to bring it up a few weekends ago, telling my husband we really need to figure this one out. I don't think it has to set the precedent for how all holidays will be from here on out, but this holiday season will be unique for sure.

@MrsCB: I have both an Ergo and a Maya carrier, I liked using both, even when DS was a newborn. DH never particularly liked the sling, he never felt totally secure wearing it, and he liked the ergo ok but really prefers the full frame hiking pack which we started using around the time baby was 8 mos old I think. I will say with the sling I don't feel comfortable having both hands away for very long - I keep one hand on baby's bottom or back most of the time but that may not really be necessary. Also for extended wearing I think the ergo is more comfortable because it distributes the weight evenly.

My baby boy was born Dec 2011, his due date was 12/22 and he arrived 12/16. It made for a uniquely challenging Christmas season - we had lived across the country for many years and it was our first year to be back and near our families so even though we probably could have declined all activities, everyone wanted us to be there and we wanted to see everyone. We didn't have to drive further than 30-45 minutes but it was a challenging few days for sure. I would say the worst part of the timing was that everyone had time off around that time so we had TONS of visitors, both out of town guests and local friends/family stopping by. Nobody was particularly inconsiderate but it was overwhelming, and in 6 weeks off work I think there were 3-4 days total that we didn't have somewhere to go or someone over at our house.
I think these babies will be much better (November babies, for all of us!), timing-wise, because by that time they're a few weeks old and you'll be in a little bit of a routine, be more used to being a mom, and more like yourself as the hormones and sleep deprivation start to calm down or at least reach a sort of steady state

@MrsCB: When DS was a newborn I only had a Sleep Wrap (same thing as a Moby). I LOVED this for how close and cuddly it made him and it was a LIFESAVER. The only down side with a stretchy wrap is they start to sag quickly after a certain weight (I think ~18 lbs is the max) there is also a learning curve, but a few YouTube videos and that problem is quickly solved. Even though my carrier collection has grown this will still be my go to for the those first couple of weeks/months (depending on babies size).
We then added an Ergo and I love this. I still use it now at 16.5 weeks pregnant! DS adores this, but I still like the way he felt closer to me in the wrap as a NB next to this one. The Beco would be similar, but I have no first hand experience on it (I know some prefer the one over the other).
We also now have a WCRS and a WCMT and these I would use with a NB or after LO outgrows my stretchy wrap and before I start using the Ergo I think. The WCMT gives you the best of both worlds, IMO, to a wrap and a SSC. A RS is just so versatile the possibilities with these are endless and I even use it with DS now in a RUB (rings under bum) which is a back carry. I wish I would have had both of these options when DS was smaller.

@MrsCB: I've been eyeing the Sakura Bloom, too... I ordered an Ergo off of Gilt, but for whatever reason, seem drawn to the ring slings for the super early days...
I'm not too worried about the birth date (I'm due the 8th). I think Halloween would kind of blow, but wouldn't be the end of the world. Oh, I guess I didn't even think about it, our anniversary is on October 27th...hmm...maybe it'd be better if baby sticks to November!

@ms.janedoe: haha I love your posts! They make me laugh! We have an October anniversary too, but baby would have to be super early to make that one.

Omgaaahh I am 100% feeling baby kicks now. It is so WEIRD. I felt it a lot yesterday but wasn't positive thats what I was feeling but he's been moving all.day.long. It is so so weird. Not at all like what I would have guessed it would feel like.
Also, it is really low. Weird measurement but if I put my iPhone at the bottom of my bellybutton, where the bottom hits on my stomach is where i'm feeling it at.
I wonder if it's because my pants are way too tight today and he's upset lol!
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
@MrsTiz: ahhh yay!! So jealous! The ultrasound tech told me not to expect to feel anything for 2-3 more weeks because of my anterior placenta. It's crazy because he was moving alllll over the place and I'm like "how the heck am I not feeling that?!"
And I totally just used your iPhone measurement! That's where I felt something a couple weeks ago, but other than a few pops now and then, I haven't felt anything since
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@lilteacherbee: I have no idea if I have an anterior placenta or not, i'm going to ask at my next appt. I am surprised I am feeling it because I had a nice cushy layer of fat for him to have to kick through. I have been trying to feel it from the outside with no luck.
Speaking of iPhones, I bought a LifeProof case from Amazon ($70) and it is broken...soo I e-mailed LifeProof and my case is a fake/counterfeit case. No way to get the case replaced or refunded now, so i'm screwed!

@mrstiz I’m feeling movement pretty low as well. At first I wasn’t convinced that it was baby kicks since it was so low… but they’re pretty obvious now. The first time I felt movement it wasn’t at all what I expected or had heard of (bubbles, popcorn popping, etc.) I think it was a full on roll over & shift position so it was more dramatic! Now I get a mixture of the little kicks, which feel like tiny pokes and bigger moves.
I totally think what I’m wearing or how I’m sitting activates the lil one. When I hunch over at my desk with horrible posture it squishes my belly and a few moments later I get nudges. Which, of course I then try encourage when I’m bored at work!

@sarah.clarisse: That sounds like me right now, wearing too-tight-pants and hunched over because I forgot my back pillow/I have crappy posture lol!
