Our little girl was born this morning!!! I started having contractions around 9 the night before. They weren't super strong or painful, but they were consistently 4-5 minutes apart. Since I was 4 cm earlier in the week, I had been advised not to wait too long to get to the hospital. I spoke to the OB on call doctor and she suggested coming in. I was at 6 cm when the nurse checked me and we quickly realized we were staying to have a baby.
The doctor told me she planned to break my water and it was likely I would go very quickly. If I did, there wouldn't be time for an epidural. She recommended getting the epidural before if I wanted it. I wasn't 100% sure I needed it since contractions weren't super painful, but I decided to go for it. As one of the nurses put it, the trophy isn't better if you skip the epidural.
After the epidural, she broke my water and I was at an 8. DH and I got to sleep/rest for about 2 hours as my body worked towards 10 cm. All of a sudden, I could feel the contraction down low and it HURT. DH called the nurse and sure enough, it was time to push. We had been there for just 5 hours.
Pushing took a little while as my contractions we sometimes up to 10 minutes apart. Nothing like hanging out with your lady bits all exposed while you wait for the next contraction. The doctor gave me a small dose of pitocin to increase the contractions, which worked as much as it needed to. I certainly felt the ring of fire this time and it was the worst part, but lasted only a minute.
At 5:10 am, she was born. We got to check her out, do skin to skin, and breastfeed. Her latch isn't awesome so I'm hoping to see the lactation consultant before we go home tomorrow.
Here is our little lady, Evelyn Marie!!!
