@mrskc: Thanks for asking! I"m almost afraid to jinx it but it does seem to be going better...nursing is still painful for the first 5 seconds, but then it is actually comfortable. The pain related to thrush has also subsided since I started meds for it. I really hope that it does not come back!
As for how often L is nursing, during the day it's usually every 2.5-3 hours. A lot of the time I have to wake him up to eat because it's going on 3 hours. At night, we usually get one stretch of 4 hours or so, and then it's every 2-3 hours after that. Not too terrible I guess...I've heard the 3rd week has a growth spurt so I'm anticipating that he might want to eat more often. @MrsRcCar: do you have a carrier like a moby or an ergo? you could wear him while you shop, maybe?@hellobeeboston: have you tried laid back nursing? I've heard that's good for forceful letdown. @Beebug: so cute! I want to squish her cheeks

@Beebug: too cute! She looks so snug. It's still to warm where I'm at for clothing like that. It was high 80's yesterday!
@hilsy85: I'm glad it's getting better for you. We just went through the 3 week growth spurt and it was a bit brutal. I would say the peak of my hatred for BFing so far. The last couple of days have been much better.
Just took a short walk around the neighborhood. I carried him around the house in my k*tan until he was asleep then moved him into the car seat. He just stayed asleep! yay!

We had our one month check up today. Delaney is 10 lbs 3 oz (75th percentile) and 22.75 inches (95th percentile). Dr said she's doing great!
We talked about sleeping issues and we are going to try putting her in the crib and use a monitor. Has anyone else put their LO in their crib yet???

@hilsy85: been doing the laid back nursing since yesterday and it's great! it's super comfortable, and we haven't had any coughing/gagging! he's also been latching really easily in this position. yay. looking forward to getting some longer stretches at night, we're still up every 2 hours, maybe 3.
@mrskc: that's great! he'll get used to the carseat over time.
@CarrieLouWho: Sounds like Delaney is doing great! awesome.... definitely not in the crib yet - only 2 weeks old tomorrow - but I can't wait for that day! i even am just looking forward to sleeping in the same room as my husband, ha!

@CarrieLouWho: sounds like she's doing great! How much did she weigh at birth? My LO hasn't slept in the crib yet.
@hellobeeboston: glad the reclined position is working out for you. I need to work on that more. My left breast has a forceful letdown and I hear that helps. It's frustrating because he'll unlatch and then my milk is spewing out like a fountain and it gets so messy!
persimmon / 1408 posts
@MrsKC she was 9 lbs 3 oz, so exactly one pound! She was 21 inches at birth, so she's grown 1.75 inches! It's so crazy how fast they grow when they're this little!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
I can't wait for 1-month appt to see how much she's grown!! We go on the 21st!
Bf'ing Q. Anyone else's LO's have freakouts on the breast? She will be nursing and then just start beating on me (arms and legs thrashing, kicking) she's trying to cry, will settle back on, pop back off, it's SO frustrating, and new. I know there's lots of milk there for her, and have no idea why she's doing that!
I put a pump on our registry, and it was purchased!! I am registry stalking now, and it's insane to see what's been purchased so far, so lucky, so insane that we have 4 coming and I already feel we have too much......
How long from when you get up in the night to nurse to when you sleep again? I feel like it takes so long, and she is still tough to settle sometimes......we're like 1.5 hours usually (sometimes more) to get through nursing one side, burp, settle, change, nurse other side, burp, settle....sometimes change. Only way to get her in bassinet again is to have her fall asleep (usually on my chest) for 20-30 mins at least, then put her down.....
Am I way off here, or am I not alone!?
Rough night last night.......ugh.

@Beebug: we've had nights like that but have figured out a system to get back to sleep quickly. I think last night was a record! We were all back to bed in 25 minutes! My DH gets the baby and changes his diaper then brings him to me in bed. I nurse in a side lying position. He usually only nurses 10 minutes and usually only takes one side. He will fall asleep while nursing. He will pop himself off and continue to sleep. We'll make sure he's fast asleep then my DH carefully picks him up and swaddles him. Then he holds him and rocks him until he's settled then carefully puts him down. Last night he slept in the swing all night. We only change diaper again if he poops then ill try to nurse him to sleep again. You'll figure out what works for you but we've had nights where we're up for 1.5-2 hours.

@Beebug: oh and my LO has definitely thrashed at the boob. Mostly happens on my left side. I think it's b/c I have a forceful letdown on that side. He'll unlatch and then shake his head like he still wants to eat and my boob is spewing milk out like a fountain. It's very frustrating and can turn a 10 minute session into 45 minutes. I don't have that problem with the side lying position.

@mrskc: yay! glad the k'tan worked for you. L was up every two hours last night--I'm guessing that's the 3 week growth spurt in action!@CarrieLouWho: go Delaney! I can't wait to see Leo's stats at his 1 month appt. He's still in a bassinet next to our bed...once his night wakings calm down a little bit and he stretches out to feedings every 4.5-5 hours, then I can see moving him. But for now, it's so easy to just pull him into bed with me.
@Beebug: L has been acting funny on the 2nd boob I put him on (I do both sides for about 10-15 minutes)--he like squishes his face into it and then pulls away. Painful! As for how long we're up, he wakes up, i feed him for 15 minutes, change him, and then do the other side, usually for 10 min, and then swaddle him and put him down. He usually is half asleep when I swaddle him--total time I'm up is probably about 45 minutes. There have been nights when he's making really loud noises even though he's half asleep and it keeps me up for a looong time.

@hilsy85: How long did it take L to adjust from the snipping?
After a rough week and very sore, cracked and blistered nipples, our LC and pediatrician diagnosed a posterior tongue tie. We got it snipped this morning, and I was silly enough to hope for an instant improvement. Her tongue is still WAY back when she wants to latch on and then she gets frustrated and screams. Now I'm concerned there may be some nipple confusion because DH has been bottle-feeding her with pumped milk. even when we get that tongue around the nipple, she jerks her head back, sucks her bottom lip up and starts chewing.
Other than that, we are thrilled to be home with her!
squash / 13764 posts
@Tidybee: oh no, I'm sorry that you went through that as well! When we got L's tongue tie snipped, I had pumped and given bottles for the 24 hours before because the pain had been really bad. So when he latched on after the tongue tie was snipped, it already felt much better because my nips had healed a bit...I would say that it continued to improve, but it has by no means been a miracle cure (probably because his posterior tongue tie was not a severe one--what about C's?). His latch on is still painful for about 5-10 seconds, although who knows if that's because of his tongue position or because of the other issues I've had! But I would say by two to three days after the tongue tie was snipped, feeding him was much more comfortable after the initial latch on pain. I hope it continues to improve for you! One thing that our LC told us is when we feed bottles, make sure L's lips are way down at the base of the nipple/top of the bulb, not just pursed around the nipple, and make sure that his lips are flanged out. That way it imitates breast feeding as much as possible. You can even adjust her lips around the bottle--I do that all the time. And don't feel like you need to jump 100% into breast feeding. Give your nips time to heal, and maybe pump a few feedings a day. Also, see if you can get a prescription for all purpose nipple ointment. It has helped heal my nipples way faster than lanolin or anything else. ALSO (sorry for the novel), my pedi warned me that poor latch on/tongue ties often lead to mastitis (because the breast doesn't get emptied properly), and then nipple trauma/cracks can also lead to thrush. BOTH of those things happened to me, and they are awful! So take care of your nipples and let them heal, and make sure that you're emptying your breasts either with LO feeding or with the pump. I don't mean to scare you by any means (I think I just had bad luck), I just wish someone had told me that it's more important to let my nipples heal than to keep trying to breastfeed when I'm in pain. Anyway, good luck

Can anyone put their LO's down fairly simply?
She is like an hour on our chest before we can lay her on her back in her bassinet, I am getting somewhat resentful of this as I just want to put her down and crawl into bed......she much prefers being on her side and swaddling is a no-go anymore, arms must be up and free!
Another rough night, bleh.
Hospital for 1:30 today for hearing check, just about to head out for walk first.
I am SO tempted to copy and paste the email from my MIL to DH. Unfreakingbelievable, embarassing, and seriously just unreal what she typed. I won't because it's so brutal, and is the furthest thing from constructive for DH now that she's back halfway across the country.
Looks like I'm definitely not going anywhere for Christmas!!

@Beebug: Alia currently will not sleep anywhere but on my chest. I've set up a spot on the couch and we sleep in the living room still. I'm hoping by 8 weeks we will have a better sleep situation.

Last night was the first night since we had Nolan that he slept all night in his bassinet. I was totally shocked that it worked. I was at my parent's house last night to tend to some business matters, so it was just DS and I. I was so thankful that he slept in his bassinet all night. It did help that he had his white noise machine. (<----I love his white noise machine) The white noise machine has a rain setting, which is Nolan's favorite and mine. I am just so excited I remembered to bring it back home with me this time. Even with him not sleeping on me I am couch surfing because DH and I are in the process of moving. Needless to say everything is everywhere. Soon enough we will settled in before the holiday.
Hope everything is going well for everyone. Nolan has a weight check on monday so hopeful he has gained some more. Apparently he is gaining slowly, which I think is bananas.

@hilsy85: thank you thank you thank you!! At your suggestion and the LC's, I've been taking nights off from breastfeeding to heal and DH has been bottle-feeding her with pumped milk. It has helped me heal a bunch and then tackle breastfeeding and working on the latch during the day when I'm more awake, alert, and less stressed.
Claire's tongue-tie was also minor and posterior. The first pedi we saw in the city (when we were stuck at my BIL's) actually said she's not tongue tied. We saw an LC the next day who noticed it, took her to our pedi here who noticed it, and saw ANOTHER LC the next day who also saw it. Took her to Dr. Dahl in the city who actually snipped her underneath AND on top.
Each feeding that results in my nipples NOT looking like lipstick is a success...we'll get it.
squash / 13764 posts
@Tidybee: ha that's so funny--Dr. Dahl was the ENT recommended to us by our LC! Unfortunately, we didn't go to her because we couldn't get through to her office after the hurricane. BUt she was very highly recommended so good choice by you guys Leo also I think has the upper tongue tie a bit, but we didn't get that clipped--to be honest, I completely forgot to even ask about it at our ENT appt. And yay for non-lipstick nipples! That's how I knew the tongue tie clipping had helped--it might have still hurt when he latched on/nursed, but my nipples looked normal when they came out of his mouth, so something was going right at least! I am glad to hear things are going better!

@Beebug: Same. We take almost 2h in-between wake-ups...So for me it is sleep from 11-2, 4-8, 10-1pm (but I wake up an hour before he does so I can shower).
DS is sleeping in his crib now...we started yesterday. Basically, I set up the monitor and just go in there to feed and change him at night. I like that he isn't in our room because I get better sleep. I am not waking up to his every breath and every sneeze. Only problem is: he doesn't fall asleep in there. He has to be asleep *before* I set him down in there...but it's all good...I love snuggling my baby:)
Anyone else in the crib yet?
squash / 13764 posts
@TurtleDoves: not yet...mostly because i'm lazy and at night, it's way easier to just reach over into his bassinet and pull him into bed before I'm fully awake. Once he settles into more of a predictable schedule, I do plan on moving him into his crib.
persimmon / 1408 posts
@beebug - we started the crib on Saturday night. So far so good. She's sleeping from 11 to 4,5 or 6. I'll feed her and then we sleep again from 5- 7,8 or 9. I agree, I sleep better not hearing her every twitch. And it's been nice getting to sleep in the same bed as hubby.
For those breastfeeding, have you started Vitamin D drops? We have. D doesn't seem to notice them.
coconut / 8681 posts
@TurtleDoves: Omg. Tonight is our first night in the crib and it's not going so well. Elliot is whimpering (after being in the crib for the past 45 minutes) right now. I went in there once already when he was whimpering, picked him up and he fell right asleep. Put him down and he stayed asleep for maybe 3 minutes before this started again Boooooo. He's been sleeping so well lately (last night from 9-2am, 2:30-5am and 5:30-8). That first longer chunk feels sooooo good.
@hilsy85: I am soooooooo glad that things sound like they're going better feeding-wise with Leo
Elliot was a month old last Wednesday. CRAZY! This was him last night.
coconut / 8475 posts
@Running Elley: he's beautiful:) and E whimpers too...I think he feels the space and doesn't like it...he likes to be more confined. I am determined though...I mean: it's gota happen sometime! Might as well start early!
@hilsy & tidybee: what does a younger tie look like? How can I know? I am hoping he is just so I can have a reason why bfing isn't working for us! I'm still so upset about it.
coconut / 8681 posts
@TurtleDoves: He's sleeping soundly now so hopefully he just needed to get used to it. The monitor gives me a lot of peace of mind! The little beeps are reassuring How's pumping going??
coconut / 8475 posts
@Running Elley: omg I can't believe you have the ticks activated! Lol. Those drove me nuts:) pumping is going really well:) so far so good....I did just nurse LO straight from the breast tho to get him to fall asleep (there seemed to be no other way). And again: my breast is throbbing with pain:/ oh well...I'll do it once a day if that gets him to sleep...a compromise between me & LO;)
You're so lucky Elliot's hair stayed in tact...my son's hair was "womb hair" so it fell out. granted- it's grown back a bit since (thicker).

So envious of some of you trying cribs, we are still hopeless getting her into bassinet, let alone crib at night. She is all chest, bahhhh I hate it, I just want my bed!
What pumps do you ladies have? Pros/Cons? Recco's?
squash / 13764 posts
@CarrieLouWho: yup we started them as well. L doesn't seem to mind them at all.
@Running Elley: thank you!! Things are SO much better than they were like a week ago...I am hopeful that they will continue to improve, but even if the comfort level stays like this, it's manageable. @TurtleDoves: a posterior tongue tie? I would google image it...apparently they're hard to spot sometimes. The best person to diagnose it would be a Lactation counselor or a pediatrician, so I would definitely ask them about it! So sorry that nursing is now so painful for you It seemed like things had been going well (aka, less painful)--is this pain new? Or do you think it's from not nursing for a while and then nursing? Either way, you are doing the best you can and you should not feel bad at all! Especially with the hard work you're doing to pump. @Beebug: aw hun! I hope C gives you a break sometime soon and lets you snuggle with your DH at night for a while at least
We have the medela symphony--it's a hospital grade pump that we're renting from a pharmacy. It is awesome--definitely super powerful. But it's not available for purchase, so if we end up buying a pump, we'll probably go with the medela pump in style.
persimmon / 1408 posts
@beebug - I have the medela pump in style. I haven't used anything else, so I don't have anything to compare it too, but I really like it. I did a ridiculous amount of research.
Also, our LO was all chest for a week and a half and we just tried the crib and she did ok. I have to feed her, change her, rock her, swaddle her, then sometimes top her off and feed a little just to get her drowsy, then I do the side swing where I sway her. After all that , I put her down and that's been working. It takes an hour to 1.5 hours usually, so that's annoying.

Cloth Diaper trial day #1!
I have her in the Fuzzibuns instead of prefolds to start, and the small's fit so nicely.....so we'll see how it goes!
She is up for 3 hours solid each morning now, clustering like crazy this am, hmmm!
I made a post re: which pump, will be interested to see what BRU people say too. I'm off for the year, but really don't intend to bf longer than 6-8 months (we'll see).
I know this sounds silly, but if we want to get preggo again in 9 months or so, are we less likely to get preggo if I am still bf'ing or pumping, or is that just a myth?
I am not letting her chest sleep aaaat all today, she is so cut off!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@CarrieLouWho: I'm so bad, I just cave to the idea of sleep (with her on my chest) after the first like hour of trying to settle her.
I need to do better/try harder, but sleep rules.....argh!
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@hilsy85: I didn't want to post in your newest bf'ing thread, as I am no pro, but I have always nursed 10-15 mins each side, each session, only recently just doing one side through the night (because of the pain!) and it's worked as well.
I don't even know if I know what it's like to feel empty? I just know the feeling of full for sure, ha!!
coconut / 8475 posts
@hilsy85: yeah he was awesome for awhile at nursing but that didn't come easily...so when we had to switch for formula for that week: that pretty much ruined everything. Oh well...
@Beebug: how do you sleep with her on your chest? Aren't you scared she will fall or something? I only ask because DS always wants to sleep on my chest after his midnight feeding and sometimes I'm so tired that I'll try anything too;)
clementine / 961 posts
@Beebug: Alia is a TERRIBLE sleeper. So I am no where near trying the crib either. We still haven't succesfully gotten her to sleep in the bassinet! I'm still on the couch with her sleeping with me. I actually love the closeness with her but I miss my hubby sleeping with me.
We have been CDing with our pockets a little over a week now and I'm loving them. They are so much easier then the gdiapers. I just have to be sure to change her every 2-3 hours or they will leak from being to wet.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
We have matching leather recliners...one in livingroom, one in our bedroom......once she is on our chest, and we recline, we block ourselves in on either side with a comforter and pillows and I basically wedge my elbows into the side of the chair under the comforter and don't/can't move! I'm such a back sleeper too, so am nice and comfy........that being said I still want my bed, lol.
squash / 13764 posts
@Beebug: thanks! Any input/opinions are helpful I am now thinking that I also don't know what it means to actually be empty! I kind of feel like I am always walking around with milk in my boobies.
Also re: getting pregnant while nursing--it is less likely, I think, to get pregnant while you're nursing (a lot of women don't get periods til they wean), but it's by no means a good birth control method.
coconut / 8681 posts
@hilsy85: What were your thrush symptoms and what did they feel like? BFing has been great until the last few days. It's still not bad but one of my nipples has shooting, almost burning pain. It's only on that one side and it doesn't go away, even when his latch is perfect. He has normal whiteness on his tongue but nothing on the inside of his cheeks or anything. My nipples are cracked and sore but they almost always are anyway. I'm nervous about thrush!
@TurtleDoves: I love the ticks lol. Obviously I am still ultra paranoid shocking! I think it's cute that E nurses to sleep (even though obviously the pain doesn't make it easy!). You're comforting
@Beebug: I have a medela in style double electric pump and love it!
I'm glad to have our first crib night under our belt! E woke up twice instead of his normal once but he also was in bed 2-3 hours earlier than normal (we're putting him to bed at 8 instead of when we go to sleep) so that's understandable.

@hilsy85: I wonder if i'll get a period now that I'm EP...I hope not! I hate periods...
@Running Elley: wahoo for a good crib sleep! Ours sucked....But I expected that. Hopefully he will learn sooner than later;)
@Mrs.B: omgosh your kids are beautiful! I'm going to ask you about girls' clothing if I ever have a girl because those pants are styl'n.
And um....If there *is* a real santa...that's him! He looks so authentic!
squash / 13764 posts
@Running Elley: The thing about thrush is that it's really hard to diagnose...a lot of times the only symptom will be pain in the mom. The best way to describe the pain is that it's like shards of glass in your nipples...for me it was burning and almost tingling. I also had throbbing pains intermittently throughout the day. Apparently if you have any wounds in your nipples, like cracks, that's how the yeast gets in, so I would definitely call your Ob or your pedi! You can also start taking a probiotic, which is supposed to help fight yeast. I hope you don't have it!
