@hilsy85: AJ got his hep b shot too. he cried almost the whole time at the doctors office. It was like he knew he was going to get a shot. Oh and your LOs newborn photo is too cute. What a cutie.

We went out for the first time w/o AJ. We met friends for dinner last night. We were going to take him with us but my grandma offered to watch him so of course we took advantage of that! It was so nice to go out for a couple of hours. I even had a glass of wine! First glass in like ten months. Definitely want to do more date nights.

@mrskc: Thanks Glad you had a good date night! I agree, I want to try to make it a somewhat regular thing with DH.

Leo was up every 2-3 hours last night--after giving me a solid 6 hours for the three nights before, this was an unwelcome change! I tried the side lying nursing this morning but I don't think I did it right--it wasn't very comfortable.

@mrskc: we missed our appointment today because LO decided not to sleep last night and when he finally went down at 4am I was too tired to get up at 8am for this 9am appointment. They rescheduled it to 1 which is his nap time...so now he gets to get his shots during nap time-how fun ugh...
Today's going to be a long day!

DH gone until late Sat/early Sunday am now.

We may have figured something out with her last night in her 6 hours of fussy (wish I figured it out at 4pm instead of 9pm, LOL.

Pacifier......she loved it in the fussyness. She usually won't take it and we don't often offer it, but in desperation we tried it.....she loved it. I feel like I'm cheating and being lazy.......is it ok to use it!? Tried it when she was over tired this aft and she loved it again, then fell asleep (I took it out as she really settled and then slept).

She slept realllly good last night (and in her bassinet) but I'm betting it was because she was so tired from all the fussing.

Today while she napped I dipped her foot on an inkpad and put her foot prints on the thank-you's that arrived.....got oversized post cards and they were way bigger than I have things to write, so now her footprint takes up part of the card, lol. Poor child, she slept thru all of it, and I washed it off when I changed her, lol.

@TurtleDoves: hope everything went ok with naptime/immunization conflict!

I bought C the cutest outfit ever today for Christmas.....but next Christmas, lol.

@Beebug: totally ok to use a paci! We use one when we can--sometimes L takes it and sometimes he doesn't. I don't think it's lazy at all--babies like to suck, and boobies can only take so much

@TurtleDoves: aw hope your appt ended up going ok!

  7. CarrieLouWho

    persimmon / 1408 posts

@Beebug- we use a paci occasionally, just like @Hilsy85 said - they like to suck and boobies can only take so much! I think it's only lazy when its the first resort, if you are feeding, changing diapers and holding LO first and they still need something then you try the paci.

We are going on our first road trip today to see my parents and stepmom. 2.5 hour drive down this morning and 2.5 back tonight. I'm hoping everything goes well... I'm anticipating at least one stop. I feel like I'm packing everything under the sun
Hope you fabulous ladies have a great weekend!!!

@CarrieLouWho: haha, we did our first 2 hr trip last weekend to my parents and the car was full to the brim. I brought everything! I ended up using about a quarter of what I brought - oh well. Good luck! Our LO slept the whole car ride both ways

@Beebug: we noticed that DS makes his sucking motion with his lips all the time and I just assume he's hungry--so I feed him even though he is full. Then: he throws it allll up. Finally it dawned on me that he probably just wants to suck on something but isn't hungry. Bring in paci....All is good now. After a feed and burp he takes it (until his brain registers with his tummy and they let him that he's full). After that-he spits it out & is done with it!

  11. mrskc

    bananas / 9357 posts

@CarrieLouWho: good luck with your trip.

@Beebug: we use a paci occasionally. I mostly use it when nothing else will soothe him and I know he's not hungry. Nothing wrong with using them.

So last night we went over to my parents house for dinner. My grandparents are in town to visit the baby. All my family was over and DS was getting passed around a lot. I think it was too much for him and he had a meltdown. Just would not stop screaming. Nothing I did could soothe him. we finally strapped him I his car seat and I stuck a paci in his mouth and we high tailed it home. The car ride and paci finally calmed him. Poor guy. I hate to hear him cry like that. He slept for 5 hours when we got home.

Oh and are any of you ladies still dealing with engorgement? My boobs still get engorged and its so uncomfortable. I've been pumping every couple of days to help alleviate it which I'm sure isn't helping the situation. At least I'm building up a little freezer stash.

  12. CupQuakeWalk

    coconut / 8475 posts

@mrskc: same...I can't believe I get engorged with as much pumping as I do...but you're right: at least the freezer is getting some milk action. It will stabilize soon, right? Hehe..it better. Sorry DS got so flustered yesterday! Poor guy...I can imagine. I don't take DS over to my grandparents house because of that...their house is always full with cousins,aunts,nephews...ah! Too much for a little guy:) and too much for me!

  13. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@mrskc: Yup, I definitely get uncomfortable, especially at night, since sometimes DS goes like 6 hours. I wake up because I"m so uncomfortable and end up having to wake him up--which sucks because I don't get to enjoy him sleeping! I've heard that if you pump to relieve it, just do enough to take the edge off--don't empty the breast, as that will signal to make more milk. Lately I've been hand expressing, which is easier at night rather than setting up the pump, getting the bottles, etc. But I end up just doing it into the sink and down the drain, lol.

How long are your LOs going between daytime feedings? Leo sometimes seems to be able to go 4 hours or so during the day, and I don't know if I should let him sleep or wake him up when it's been 3 hours since he last ate. I'm not worried about weight gain, more about keeping him on a schedule/keeping him awake more during the day. What do you guys do--wake them up during the day or let them sleep?

  14. CupQuakeWalk

    coconut / 8475 posts

@hilsy85: because I'm trying to get him to sleep more during the day: I interrupt his naps constantly to change him and/or feed him. At night I let him stay asleep as long as possible! He has already gained his birth weight back so ped said to let him sleep! No more waking to feed. Of course I just do to try and get him to pep up during the day.
How long are your LOs feeding or how much milk are they getting? When I BF he goes like 15-20mins...but the. Is hungry about 2 1/2 hours later. When I bottle feed: he drinks 4 1/2oz and can go about 4-5h before the next feed. So, he makes no sense to me ;p

  15. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

I hand expressed 2oz today and bottle fed her tonight which was so cool! Bf'ed her after, with the bottle you could tell she was like wtf is this, but happily got the milk, lol.

She is spitting up longer and longer after feedings, sometimes after burp's and sometimes without a burp (despite burping her) after feedings. Finding that's sometimes half the trouble putting her down, burp her for 10-15 after a feeding, get nothing, she falls asleep and seems "out", lay her down and she then wakes, and either has a huge burp or puke.....poor thing!

She is on a 4-hour stretch here now, I'm waiting for her to wake, DH just got home.

She looks so peaceful, hurts my heart, oh my I love her!

@turtledoves:I let Nolan decide when he is going to eat. He is finally getting more on our schedule. I think it is that we are meeting more in the middle. The ped said that he is developing just fine so to continue what we are doing. However he goes for weight checks and the people that go for weight checks seems to think he is gaining too slowly. Where in Michigan are you located? DH has family up there, perhaps we could do a meet up in december sometime.

@Hilsy85: I just let Nolan decide at this point. I am an exclusive pumper so I can relieve the discomfort without waking him up. I love it when he sleeps, he looks so happy. I was always taught that it is a mortal sin to wake a sleeping baby.

I finally feel more like myself again. I got my hair cut and colored, it feels amazing. My mom watched the baby for me. I get my hair done at a salon near their house. My mom loved looking after him, for just a little while. I also got him an adoreable outfit for Christmas pictures. I am so excited for next week! Nolan is going to get pictures with Santa and then with mommy and daddy (for holiday cards). Hopefully it won't take too long to get holiday cards back, so I can get them in the mail soon.

Have any of you ladies brought an outfit just for holiday photos?

  19. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

Ahhhh Santa pics will be so cute! I didn't even think about getting them done this year, could be cuuuute for holiday cards, wonder if local Santa gives digital copy, hmmm.

C will meet her Great-Great Grandmother today, 5 generation family photo today.

We had a good night, she is having an awake stretch in the middle of the night, 1am two nights ago, 3am last night, and now beyond zonked, if it continues need to find a way to cut that out as she is getting better thru the nights, I woke her up 5 hours into sleep to nurse (1am or so) (then she had her awake stretch!) And just nursed for like 5 mins around 5:30 and she's still out cold right now, DH did the awake stretch, sucker for being away, ha!

@hilsy85: I do hand express if I'm really engorged. I've been doing it into a towel but into the sink seems less messy. My LO goes about 2 hours between feedings during the day. At most he takes a 2.5 hour nap. I don't know what I would do if he was napping 4 hours. Is he still getting his longer stretches at night? If so then I probably wouldn't wake him.

@TurtleDoves: my LO nurses about 8 minutes. I think he's really efficient nurser and my milk comes out pretty fast. He's had a bottle a couple of times and drank about 4 oz.

What are you guys going to get your LO's for their first Christmas?

  21. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@mrskc: He's still going like 4-6 hours at night, but I don't know if that would change if I didn't wake him up during the day. I guess we might have to try it. No idea on holiday presents yet--maybe some cute wooden toys? And definitely some cute outfits.

@MrsRcCar: ha I have also heard to never wake a sleeping baby! I just worry that if he sleeps that much during the day he won't sleep at night! We're not doing holiday cards or anything, since we're sending out birth announcements in early Dec, so we haven't gotten a special outfit. WHen we see family over the holidays, we'll probably just do a cute onesie, jeans, and a little sweater.

@TurtleDoves: when I nurse, he usually pops himself off after 10-15 minutes. But then if I offer him the boob again, he'll take it, and then pop himself off after another few minutes. This can go on for a while, lol. He can usually go 2.5-3 hours off whatever he gets in a nursing session. Maybe you have a slow letdown? The bottle is also a lot quicker and easier for them to eat from, so it makes sense that he would get more from a bottle in a shorter amount of time.

Oy, Leo was up for two hours last night from 2:30am-4:30am--so frustrating! I had to hand him off to DH because I was falling over from fatigue and was getting flustered. Hopefully tonight is better. I'm also considering moving him to his crib because he is so darn noisy when he sleeps!

He's a month old today--I can't believe it. This month has FLOWN by. I'll try to post his 1 month pic later!

    ETA here's a close up

Hi ladies... a November lurker here. I did have my LO a little early in October though! Anyway I've been lurking for awhile to pick up some tips on anything and eveything, and I'm thinking about starting to introduce the bottle soon. Any tips on when to pump and how long to pump for...what kind of bottles are working well? I posted on the main boards but didn't get a ton of replies. Thanks in advance and congrats to all of you...you all have such beautiful babies!!

@JessLC: Hi there! Congrats on your LO! I posted about this too and someone shared with me these links to check out:
    http://www.hellobee.com/breastfeeding-pumping-guides/
    http://www.hellobee.com/2012/04/06/building-up-a-breastmilk-freezer-stash/

From what I understand pumping like 30 mins - 1 hour after 1st morning session is good. You should pump for 15-20 minutes on each breast. For me personally, I've only been pumping both breasts once every couple of days. My LO isn't on a typical schedule yet, so it's hard for me to pump when it's just me taking care of him while my DH is at work. So I've been pumping on weekend mornings and sometimes in the evening during the week. I don't if it's b/c I'm a large producer or what, but I can pump for 5 minutes and get 4 ounces of milk so that's all I'll pump at a time.

I've only tried the tommee tippee bottle so far and my LO took to it fine. I let my DH give the bottle so my LO only associates breast with me. Oh and i found this link with some helpful tips:

    http://www.pumpstation.com/pumpstation/dept.asp?dept_id=3282

Hope that helps! And good luck with starting pumping. I was intimated at first but once I tried it out, it was easy. Definitely more of a pain compared to just letting LO breastfeed.

@mrskc: thank you so much! really helpful advice. i am a little intimidated by the whole integrating the bottle thing, and all the talk about nipple confusion just makes me nervous. but, it seems from what i've read on the boards here, that it is not that common? anyway. i want to be able to leave the house and have someone else be able to feed LO, and this is the only way i can do it! i have one tommee tippee bottle too, so i will try that out first.

@Beebug: we also have a huge gift set of avent bottles, but not with us right now (at my parents' house temporarily so mom can help out!). i hope LO likes those too. and OMG, look at your LO's hair! its like a mop! gorgeous love the picture too!

@MrsRcCar: dude, I'd loooove to meet up! I live in a suburb called FLushing....about an hour north of Detroit and an hour South of Lansing. Let me know if you guys come up!
    @mrskc: omgosh! He's so efficient! That's awesome:)
@hilsy85: he's so handsome! & just FYI: we've been sleeping (all 3 of us) waaayyy better and longer since we made the crib move. It's wonderful;)
    @Beebug: love it!
@JessLC: we have avent, dr browns & platter drop ins...DS takes them all---I just have it to him and he went at it. However- he looks for the breast first and still highly prefers it (which is good!) so, I feel bad at first because he tries to get the boon and only after he realizes its not happening will he accept the bottle.

@turtledoves: My DH's family live near Flint Michigan, so Flushing isn't far at all! It would be wonderful to meet up. Hopefully we can get up there soon. I always get jealous of the other Bees, when they get to meet up. BTW are you on the Facebook group?

@Jesslc: DS does not like the playtex drop ins at all! So far he likes the BornFree bottles. I am an exclusive pumping mom because he has latch and suck problems but he does still prefer the breast first. I just know that he doesn't get nearly enough and it causes me pain. I think that people try to scare new moms with nipple confusion.

@BeeBug: That is a great photo!! C is an adoreable little one!!

@Hilsy85: He is so handsome! Look at all of his hair. I can understand the awake periods at night. DH has been great about taking Nolan when he gets into one of those extended awake periods. DH works like 2nd shift, and he thinks I work all day in his veiw. He is happy to come home and take his shift so to speak with his son. Plus it is hard for me to get the baby back from him once he is home. I think he misses us like crazy when he is at work.

Today my mom came over to our Townhome to help me get everything all packed up. She was here all day. It was great to have her here because I have been trying to get everything packed for a while now. However Nolan makes it almost impossible to get a lot done because he needs attending to. I think secretly my mom loves to help pack and move people. She has so much fun organizing things. Tonight is a little sad for me though because when my mom left, she took our cat Anakin with her, so we won't have to be concerned about him escaping when we load our moving truck. It was really hard to pack him up and say bye...I know that sounds really silly but he is my little furry boy. My dog Stella is moping because Anakin is her snuggle buddy, she watched he get all packed up and she just whined. It broke my heart a little bit, but I know soon we will all back all together. We are getting the moving truck tuesday morning. My mom and DH's friend are coming over to get the last of our things loaded. As I look around our townhome, it looks so empty. When DH left for work today, he said to me " My snuggle buddy (Anakin) isn't going to be here when I get home...." I could tell that he was really bummed out, but it is best for everyone involved. Tonight is a little sad in the Rc Car house because our family isn't all together, but I have to remind myself that is just for a max of two days, and in the end everything will be so much better.

I would be so so sad if my cat wasn't home:( but having her safe is much better than risking her running away when your house door is constantly being opened during the move:/

@hilsy85: Let us know how it goes! I've been thinking about trying it too.

I'm about to lose my mind!! DH's friend came up to visit and got here on Friday saying he was planning on staying for a couple of days. He's still here! And DH worked yesterday, today and is working tomorrow. So Elliot and my normal schedule is thrown off from having to entertain daddy's single guy friend. I hate not being able to feed LO openly at home- it's driving me insane! Plus DH came home this evening not feeling well... He's been throwing up since he got here. So I have basically banished myself to our room with the baby who is screaming and refusing to sleep, DH is either puking or camped on the sofa and his friend is just sitting there watching tv. Ahhhhhh.

  35. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@TurtleDoves: @Running Elley: ehh it wasn't really that successful...he went to sleep at like 8:15, I did a dream feed at like 10:!5 (which was hard--he was SO asleep that it took like 15 minutes just to get him to latch on), and then he woke up at 1:20, 4:10, and 7:00. So doing the dream feed doesn't seem like it helped him to sleep longer. I'm going to keep trying though, and I'm also going to start double swaddling him to see if that helps (since when he wakes up, he usually has one or both arms out of his swaddle). @Running Elley: that is ridiculous!! So rude to impose on a family with a NEWBORN like that! Can DH talk to him? I mean, why is he staying with you guys so long? Plus, it's almost Thanksgiving! Is he spending the holiday with you? I would totally have DH give him the boot.

@Running Elley: also, I know you said in another thread that you've put E on somewhat of a schedule with feedings and such. What do you do if he's sleeping at a time when he's supposed to be eating? Do you wake him up?

  37. Beebug

    What is dream feeding?

  38. CupQuakeWalk

    coconut / 8475 posts

@Beebug: its when you feed your baby in the middle of their sleep in order to fill them up and prevent them from waking up from hunger a few hours later...basically it extends their sleep.
For example: My son sleeps 6 hours (10-4) and then wakes up starving at 4am. If I feed him before I head to bed (12ish) then he will get full(er) and stay asleep until 6am (which is a much more reasonable time for me to wake up!).

  39. CupQuakeWalk

    coconut / 8475 posts

@Running Elley: omgosh does your DH know when this dude is planning on going home? I think its super weird that he's hanging with you while knowing your breastfeeding and that DH is sick! Talk about bad timing, buddy...

    bad news!
(tmi) Lochia stopped about 5 days ago....and 2 days ago I got horrible period cramps...and then: my lovely period. Seriously...how does this happen? I hate periods. I think it might be because my pumping schedule is so sporadic so my body doesn't realize i'm breastfeeding, maybe? I don't know...just sucks. And yes, its def my period. Its the color and amount (tmi) as my period has always been. boo.

    good news!
I don't want to jinx it but, for the last 5 days-ish...Lo & I have been 50% breastfeeding, 50% pumping! Basically, his latch is getting better to the point that he doesn't crack my nipples, just makes them sore.
So, I nurse at every other feed....and give him a bottle at every other feed. So, I am pumping less times during the day and I back to breastfeeding! It's exciting.
I plan to keep it this way...I honestly don't know if I want to EBF....I like this 50/50 business. I've noticed that when I BF his last feeding, he will sleep 6/7h straight. So, I love that.
Then, in the morning, I shower while DH gives him his bottle. So, it works for my sanity! So glad were finally on some sort of routine and sleep schedule!

  40. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@TurtleDoves: So awesome about the bf/pump split and routine/schedule!

We had a rough Sunday night and Monday night with fussing...like.....awful.

I made the post yesterday and tried super short nursing sessions (like 3-5 mins) then 10 mins of burping, before another super short session, 10 mins burping, etc. It's like an hour to get a solid session in, BUT after I fed her, we then opted to bath her (she was fussing) around 8:30 last night, she was done by 9, asleep on DH by 9:20, her and I asleep in bed by 10, she woke at 1:30 to feed (and just one few min session, then back to sleep), then another quick one side at 5:30, then she slept til 8am!

That's why I asked what dream feeding was, wasn't sure if that's what I was doing! Don't think so, as she wakes me, but if this were to continue it would be SO awesome!

She is in bed with me however *hangs head in shame*

Talked to doc about it and he agrees the short sessions are likely a great idea, but we can let her side sleep in her bassinet if we block her in. Said her startle reflex is likely partly the problem, and some babies just hate being on their backs! So we will see!

She was 10.56lbs! Just about 1.5lbs gained in 4 weeks I think good? Doc was happy with her growth.
