Well, I just had the most lackluster, "You're going to be a grandma!" reveals ever. My mom is always working so I called her today while she was at work and told her and she pretty much went, "Oh. Well, that's nice. Don't let yourself get too excited though until at least three months." And that was pretty much it before she had to go take care of her baby (she's a NICU nurse). I think she's kinda jaded about babies after working with them every day? I have no idea. My dad at least was a bit more excited and scrambled to get a pen so he could put the due date on the calendar. We tell the inlaws tomorrow on skype which should be interesting.

@however briefly: I'm really sorry you didn't get more of a reaction! I think I got my best, most excited reactions from my online/FB friends last time, haha! How are you expecting Skype with the in-laws to go? Oh, and congrats on only having one baby in there!
How's everyone feeling so far this weekend? I had wicked heartburn yesterday but am feeling fine today...with my last pregnancy, at this point I was already throwing up multiple times a day. Words cannot even explain how overjoyed I am that so far I've had zero morning sickness! Apologies to those who do feel terrible.

@cmbknyc: welcome and huge congratulations!
@however briefly: I'm sorry that kind of sucked for you, we went round to my parents tonight with the dog dressed in his tshirt and the big news came out. They were both hugely happy and my mum cried and lots of cuddles, they opened a bottle of champagne...then the chat went to normal day to day things, and I felt like it was a bit anticlimax. Perhaps they are in shock, maybe it's normal, I guess there isn't much to discuss at 7 weeks pregnant. Hhmmm I think I perhaps shouldn't have expected the fireworks and parade we are telling DH mum tomorrow too then noone else until 12 weeks. Feel a bit sad that OUR secret is out. Haha what an idiot I am.
I hope your day goes better tomorrow, and you get the reaction you are looking for. If nothing else just remember how excited I am for you!

@Mirage: How'd the ultrasound go today?
@Mrs tartan: Yes, I absolutely feel like I'm starting to show! I get so bloated after every meal.
@Jasmine Green: Yeah, I think waiting until 8 weeks is pretty typical. It's so hard to wait that long! I might go to a walk-in for a blood test to confirm the home test on my own! Lol.
@however briefly: cute video announcement and yay to one baby!
apricot / 435 posts
@cmbknyc: Congrats! Welcome!
@however briefly, @Mrs tartan: The announcements always seem to be interesting, and often don't always match expectations! I'm sure that once things are progressing further, the excitement and happiness will only build! I think you both have such cute announcements!
@wonderstruck: If I'm having morning sickness, it's in waves rather than all the time- yesterday I felt pretty good, but the day before I spent some time weathering some crazy bouts of nausea, so who knows. I'm 6 weeks (or 6 +some, depending on which online calculator I use), so I'm aware that things can deteriorate still!
I've found that the best way of fending off feeling sick is to just keep eating- hunger and nausea really go hand-in-hand for me, but it's only making me worry about gaining weight too quickly! I tend to gain lots of weight normally if I don't closely watch what I eat, and for some reason, things like clementines and fruits don't really settle my stomach as well as carbs!
And the Mr. is NOT being helpful. Last night he was talking about getting some cakes from a bakery that was having a sale, and I told him that under no circumstances was he to bring that stuff into the house. He then told me that the baby probably really wants cake. And if this child even slightly takes after him, my house will be filled with cakes and sweets, and a husband and child who can eat whatever they like and not gain an ounce. Sigh.

@however briefly: glad you were able to do the ultrasound and are relieved about having one instead of two. My sister has twins that are the same age as DS and I am nervous that it might happen to me. Lol. I would be completely overwhelmed. @wonderstruck: feeling tired, but I'm sure that has a lot to so with DS no sleeping. Is there auch a thing as an 18m sleep regression? We are dealing with all sorts of sleep issues that just started this week. Ugh. Otherwise, I've been feeling bloated in the evenings and have had some wicked heartburn too. I'm anxiously awaiting our first ultrasound next week to see interested little bean is growing alright...
@cmbknyc: yay and welcome!!
@Ms.Pumpkin: carbs were my best friend for the first tri with my son. If it's the ony thing that tastes good and fends off the nausea, I say whatever. Things should even out when you start to feel better in the second tri. At least that's what happened to me.
apricot / 287 posts
@however briefly: sorry that things were ho-hum with your parents, how did it go with the in laws?
@wonderstruck: hope the heartburn is letting up, are you taking anything for it? I always wonder what is considers safe and what actually helps!
@cmbknyc: welcome! What a wonderful valentines day surprise!!
@mrs tartan: I had this same response last time we told my parents, they were so excited and happy, but after the first bit life moved on to talking about normal things....I'm sure as things progress and there are more decisions being made, gear being purchased, nurseries being decorated and appointments happening that things will pick up. I anticipate the same reaction with my parents. How did it go telling you mil?
@ms.pumpkin: I think eat what makes you feel ok, and worries about things later, it's maybe better than feeling sick all the time....I honestly have no interest in food after 4pm, I can't think of anything that I want to eat, and I'm not feeling sick yet. However things are different in the morning, I could eat a horse!
@bushelandapeck: yes to the bloat in the evenings, and gas! I feel bad for dh, it can be rotten! I keep saying "it's not me, it's he little bean in there causing all the gas...." He is semi understanding.
Hope everyone had a great weekend! We had planned to drive up to my parents, about an hour away, today and surprise them, but it was quite snowy and the roads were icy, so we decided to stay home. I'm not sure what we will do now. I don't feel like driving up during the week, and next weekend with have a big family thing and I don't want to tell them there.....bah, at Huns point I'm so indifferent to telling them I may end up texting her! Ha! Probably not, but the thought has crossed my mind.

I am in a "nothing at all sounds appetizing" stage. Today I literally could not think of a single thing that I wanted to eat. It is a really, really strange feeling to have even your favorite foods sound disgusting (I'm pretty sure this is the first time in my life where I don't want cake). I feel a little nausea off and on throughout the day, but nothing unbearable. I'm trying not to feel too guilty about my unhealthy diet of oyster crackers, smoothies, and cereal.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@Mrsk: Yesterday when it was bad I took some Zantac. I experienced it with my first pregnancy too, and that is what my midwife recommended back then.
So far I've actually lost weight since finding out I'm pregnant, which is crazy because I feel so bloated, although I haven't been particularly hungry because of that feeling. I'm glad though because I still weigh 15 pounds more than I did before getting pregnant with my first.
Has anyone decided on names? DH and I are so stuck. Our son's name was really the only boy name we could agree on last time, and we're having a heck of a time coming up with another.! It would be easy if it weren't for the fact that I promised DH we'd use his name as the middle name this time, since last time we used my dad's. His name, Aaron, just doesn't match well with most of our favorite first names. So far the front-runners are Zachary (which he loves it and the way it sounds with Aaron, and while I agree they sound well together, I just don't love it) and Declan (which I LOVE so much, and he likes too...but he still thinks Zachary sounds better with the full name.) Other possibilities are Jude and Emmett.
We haven't discussed girl names at all and probably won't unless they tell us we're having one. That would be a lovely surprise, but for some reason I just feel like I'm having anther boy - I think because last time everyone, including me, thought girl...and when we found out that wasn't the case I was disappointed, and I hated myself for feeling that way. Now I know how fun boys are and think my little man is absolutely perfect, so I'm just assuming I'll get another one of him! Haha.

I am feeling pretty good, no real morning sickness and no sore boobs at 4 weeks. Two nights before AF is scheduled to show I started spotting (pinkish brown only when I wiped, about 5-6 drops) and had cramps like AF so that scared the hell out of me. Still cramping but no spotting since. AF due in the morning so let's hope that witch stays away. 2nd set of betas drawn on Sunday, I'll get them back by Tuesday. My last one was 18 at 10 DPO so I'm hoping for at least a 40! I'm 14 DPO today and officially 4 weeks. I just want this first trimester to go well and no more spotting!

@wonderstruck: we have girl names picked out but are still grappling with boy ones. We both definitely have our favorites. He wants Cameron May and I want Quinn Victoria for a girl but I think DH is going to relent
ETA if we have a second girl it will definitely be Cameron as I do love that name. And I'm aware it sounds like Queen Victoria

@Mrsk: MIL is sick, so that didn't end up happening, we are off on a city break on Friday for a week, by the time we get back ill be almost 10 weeks so we might just hold off until after 12 weeks u/s at that point.
@wonderstruck: we have not even allowed ourselves to think if names yet. In fact we do not talk much about baby other than how I'm feeling and practical nursery/childcare conversations. I think once we see our 12 week scan then it will really go up a gear.
@Mrs.Panda: I love Quinn and as I'm scottish, Cameron is a very masculine boys name here, Cammy for short. Just to throw that out there is you are struggling for boys names.

Is anyone else having to deal with a toddler that wakes a lot through the night? I feel like I'm NEVER going to sleep again. Ideally, DD would sleep through the night before this baby arrives, but she's only done that twice in her life (18.5 months). What should I do??? I'm sooooo tired.
Oh, and I just calculated costs for a newborn and toddler full time in daycare. And I want to cry.

@LulaBee: we have a 13.5 month old and he's not STTN...we're hoping when LO #2 arrives, he'll be STTN or at least in longer stretches... i haven't even THOUGHT about the daycare costs (i'm trying to block it out right now...hehehe)

Ah! A bit of brown spotting this morning, nothing since,...and some twinges like cramps on and off through the day, I'm terrified, I really don't know if I could handle another miscarriage, I honestly think I would have to put myself in therapy to get thru it. I keep going to the bathroom to wipe and check for more, but nothing yet, I know spotting is normal in pregnancy, but I told myself that last time and it didn't turn out good,....freaking out all day over here.

@however briefly: thanks for doing the calendar and appt schedule! sorry to hear about the lackluster reaction to your reveal- i'm sure things will pick up as you show more and they catch your excitement. when we told the ILs last weekend, it felt super lukewarm to me- actually, my FIL was so shocked he didn't even say anything for a few minutes and after that, it was just back to regular ol' dinner conversation. I don't even think they asked when the due date was... Based on that reaction, I knew I had to tell my parents in person so I could hopefully get a better reaction. Luckily they came through so now I feel more even-keeled.
@Mrs Tartan: I feel such a relief now that we've told both sets of parents about it! And it's great that everything's out in the open now because we hadn't told anyone we were trying so I guess they thought we were having issues. I just have my younger brother left to tell, then it's the wait until 2nd trimester to tell my friends. I'm hoping to wait as long as possible to tell people at work, but some of them have eagle eyes and have been on me since I got married.
@BunnyLovesBear: Hehe, I was so tempted to do the same, but work took up most of my waking hours and now it's just another week and a half, so I might as well wait it out until the OB appointment.
@MS Pumpkin: Ditto re nausea- as soon as I wake up, I need to have a slice of toast, then another one when I leave for work. It's easier to snack when I was home this long weekend even though I had semi-cravings (tangerines and other tangy foods). Not sure it's going to work so well in the office though.
@Wonderstruck: The hubs and I have talked about names in the past, so we have long-standing favorites already. But I'm sure we'll be changing or adding more to our short-list in the next few months. Right now we're just having fun thinking up crazy middle names that start with my initials (Wolfgang and Galahad, haha).
@MrsK: @Mrs Panda: I had intermittent cramping during week 4-5 as well, freaked me out every time I stretched and got a cramp. I asked the OB office when I made my appointment and they said it's okay as long as it's not accompanied by bright spotting. Fingers crossed for stickiness!

I really, really want to join you ladies but I'm nervous! I think I'm 5 weeks 1 day but the OBGYN thinks I'm "very early" in the pregnancy...I'm not sure how much earlier in the pregnancy I could be. I think my due date is October 19 but I won't get a firmer due date until my OBGYN appointment on 3/10. This is baby #2, a surprise natural pregnancy. I went through IVF for my first LO - she's only 7.5 months old.

@swedishfish: I've been wondering when you were going to get your butt over here! I have the opposite - my midwife thinks I'm further along than I am. We have our ultrasound on the same day though, so we'll both know for sure then and I'm so excited about it! I wouldn't mind my midwife being right and having an earlier due date...but considering that I know the exact date I ovulated on based on OPKs and temping, I double that's what will happen. With L they told me he'd be due in late April and I said May...and yep, at the ultrasound they changed it to May 12th! I hope you're right about being 5 weeks along - I really think you are. And L just turned 9 months, so I'm glad I'll have someone else to experience the whole '2 under 2' thing with.
I'm starting to feel nauseous tonight and I'm petrified. Fingers crossed it's a fluke and not my hyperemesis gravidarum coming back for pregnancy #2! Or maybe I just made my stomach upset feeling my skater's nervousness kicking back in watching the Olympics tonight, haha! Anyone else keeping up with it? Charlie and Meryl used to come skate in the shows for the rink I grew up skating at since they trained locally, and I was so super excited to see them win gold!

@bunnylovesbear. The technician couldn't give me the details so I have to wait until I talk to the doctor. It took forever to do the ultrasound, because they had a student there as well so they had to do everything twice. Last time my bladder wasn't full enough so they had to do an internal, so this time I made sure I drank lots and let me tell you I had to pee soooo bad!!! lol
They won't let us take pictures of the ultrasound due to legal reasons but the technician knew it was our first and was nice enough to let my husband in at the end. She even showed us, the sac, the featus and it's little heartbeat!!!! So exciting! I'm still having some spotting and had a little more than usual which was unsettling. Fingers crossed the little squirt keeps growing strong!

@Mirage: awww congratulations on seeing the heartbeat, this is what I am most excited for! Did the tell you how many weeks/days you are? Did it match what you thought?
@singingbee: that's so exciting to hear, I don't let myself think that far ahead, I just want to make it to the 12 week mark, but nice to see where hopefully all of our lives will be. Congrats on your LO.
@Jasmine Green: I hear you on the eagle eyes, i am trying so hard to be anti-pregnant at work. I talk about fake bottles of wine at the weekend and plans to go out with friends for a big night out in a few weeks.
I am having to graze on food all day long to keep the nausea at bay, does anyone else do this? I don't know what is non fattening that I can eat all day long, fruit makes me feel ill after a while, but I've started on dry banana and raisins etc that seem to help. Next midwife appointment in 2 hours, really dreading getting blood taken, usually I'm fine but today that turns my stomach. I hope I don't throw up!

Okay ladies so I have a story for you. I had some spotting the other night as I mentioned before and have also been cramping. Needless to say, this has me hyper - concerned and nervous. Fast forward to today. I still haven't gotten my betas back so I am all kinds of crazy today. I get to work tonight and all is well, a little cramps but okay. Then I start to feel a little bit of *ahem* moisture down below and start to worry about more spotting. I go to the bathroom and pee and see the toilet is light pink! I am devastated as this is what happens before o get my period. I wipe and it is indeed pink. So sad.
I go back to the bathroom pretty much every 45 minutes to pee when I decide to do an experiment. Long story short, I checked to find out where the pink was coming from and I was not spotting! I was peeing pink! I was happy that I wasn't spotting after all, but WHY THE HELL AM I PEEING PINK. I didn't have any UTI symptoms so I'm thinking it must be one of those super fast acting ones and I'm going to be in a world of pain in a couple of hours. I'm researching online because it just doesn't seem normal whe I happen upon an article about beeturia.
Beeturia is when you eat beets and you pee or poop and it is stained pink or red. I had had a chopped, lightly roasted fresh beet before work tonight. SRSLY. I can't handle the emotional roller coaster!
Moral of the story: if you eat beets, don't freak out if your byproducts are red!

@wonderstruck: I am also assuming we are having a boy for the same exact reasons you described. DS has DH's name so that was an easy decision for us. I have no idea what we will do for a name this time around. We have a few girl names on the list but none that I am 100% sold on. I love the name Jude and Emmett is my cousins son's name and I love that one too!
@LulaBee: I am going to start a thread today asking for advice about our 18 mos old poor sleep....I will let you know if I get any great advice!!

Nothing too crazy happening over here. I am ridiculously tired, both from being pregnant and from LO deciding to stop STTN as of last week. Ugh. I went to bed at 8pm last night but still feel like I need a nap today. I have been a little lightheaded when I stand up so I think I need to make an effort to drink more water. @wonderstruck: We've already been brainstorming names, too. We were Team Green last time around, so we'll probably go that route again. We still have our girl name saved from our last pregnancy since we had a boy in 2012, but we haven't been successful with any new choices for a boy. We've also realized that our girl name is growing in popularity, so we may need to change that one, as well. I'm liking names that begin with an A for a girl, though.
@Mrs.Panda: I had some spotting around the time AF was due, too. I was expecting my period by Thursday or Friday, and I spotted the Monday and Wednesday prior. The same thing happened when I was pregnant with my daughter, so I'm taking it as a sign that it's a girl. (it didn't happen when I was pregnant with my son).
@LulaBee: We're very lucky and our son has always been an amazing sleeper; however, he's had a cold and is teething again, so last week (when we just found out about the pregnancy and I was super exhausted ALL of the time) he had a couple rough nights in a row. Luckily, things have calmed down again, but it makes me worry about the sleepless nights to come!
@bushelandapeck: Go Team Green this time around!! You can do it!!
In other news, I had an unfortunate bout of food poisoning yesterday...not fun. Or at least I'm pretty sure that's what was going on. I went to bed early Sunday night with an upset stomach, but just thought it was a combo of being preggo and having a super busy weekend (my daughter's dance competition). However, I woke up at 5am, had to run to the bathroom to throw up, and was bed-ridden for the rest of the day. I had ordered chicken at a restaurant the day before, and shared with Johnny, and my poor little man had the poops all day. (That confirmed the food poisoning vs. morning sickness for me) I'm feeling much better today, though. Thank goodness.
We haven't shared our pregnancy news with our families yet. In my opinion, it's just too early. There's also something nice about having our own little family secret. My daughter (13yrs) knows, and we've talked to our son (18.5 months) but he obviously doesn't totally understand. He will give my belly kisses, though. We'll probably tell my family first around 8 weeks, and then tell my husband's family at 12 weeks right before we are ready to go public. Last time around, my MIL did not honor our wishes to keep the news private, so I'm hesitant to tell her until we're ready for everyone to know. I did share the news with a close friend at work - we were TTC together in 2011, so it felt fitting to talk to her about it.

Dear October mamas, THANK YOU for all of the kind words and thoughts during the spotting issues and the evasiveness of my doctor. We went in for an ultrasound this morning, and there was a lovely sack measuring 7 weeks but nothing else. The doctor did disclose that my doubling and high hcgs should have yielded something at my last appointment where there was nothing but a sac but that he didn't wasn't willing to throw in the towel just yet. But today he is. I'm headed to the hospital to get bloodwork to check my hcgs one final time and one super strong ultrasound to make sure there is nothing he is missing, but we've already gone ahead and scheduled a D&C for Thursday, as he is that confident.
DH was at the appointment with me. I've had several good cries but have also had a feeling this was coming for some time now. As an October 2012 mom, October babies are the best kind, and i'm thrilled you will all be able to welcome one into your family this fall. I wish you all nothing but a happy and healthy 9 months, i'll be in and around HB still and I'll be checking up on you as well. xoxo

@wonderstruck: @Mrs tartan: @Ms.Pumpkin: @Mrsk: @cmbknyc: Thank you! Telling the in-laws on Skype went SOO much better. They've been pretty weird about our whole situation since the beginning but they were so happy, it was pretty perfect actually. Made our weekend, really.
@bushelandapeck: At least you only have another week until your ultrasound to find out if it's twins or not. I honestly believe that waiting to find out is so much harder than actually knowing one way or the other. My fingers are crossed for you!
@wonderstruck: I have a spreadsheet of names that I like but DH is extremely lackluster about pretty much every name I put forth. Some he absolutely hates and will let me know but most of them just engender an 'ehh' sort of response. But then, he won't bring any of his own to the table (except one boy name which is okay but definitely not one I would have chosen myself and even then, he's not fully committed to it. I'm hoping after we find out the sex, he'll be more open to seriously considering it and having it be more of a joint effort.
@Jasmine Green: Ah, our situation is a bit out of the norm. I'm not actually pregnant. My sister is acting as a surrogate for us using her eggs, not mine. Our parents on both sides have been weird about this whole thing since the beginning, awkwardly not comfortable discussing it and not understanding why we would choose to go this route. On top of it all, we live halfway around the world from my sister, my parents, and my in laws who all live scattered across the US. Our only real contact with any of them is through email and skype. So I'm not sure how much opinions and excitement will change as the pregnancy progresses as they will have no physical contact with me or my sister. We shall see though. Hopefully! Sorry your in-laws were lackluster as well. Isn't it crazy how much family opinions or reactions can affect us?
@swedishfish: Crossing my fingers that you will be joining us officially soon!
@singingbee: That's both an exciting and scary thought!
@cmbknyc: I am obsessed with lists and organized calendars and graphs and charts. That sort of stuff makes me happy so I'm thrilled to be able to share that without being looked at askance as if I am crazy Welcome!!
Life is becoming way more stressful for me here so I'm going to be pretty scarce for a bit I think. DH has another surgery on his back tomorrow and planning for our upcoming move hasn't been going so well and we're looking at many more expenses than we had been planning on and I'm starting to majorly stress. We're going to be hemorrhaging money all up to October and this is not exactly what I had wanted when it came time to having our baby born. But oh well. There's not much we can do. I know it will be so worth it a year from now when we have a house and a baby and are happily settled back in the US but getting there will be quite the adventure!

@however briefly: I'm glad the conversation with your inlaws went so well!! And good luck to your DH on his surgery tomorrow and your upcoming move!
@swedishfish: I hope you get some good news on 3/10!
