@bushelandapeck: oh yes!! a mattress! We should probably pick up one of those, too. Lol.
No plans for a baby shower just yet. This is #3 for me, so I'd feel funny asking people to "shower" us with more gifts when the last little one just arrived in the summer of 2012. I am, however, setting up a small registry online. It's more to keep track of the things we'd like to buy, but if anyone pesters us for gift ideas, we'll have that ready.
So I'm currently waiting at my lab to get my blood drawn for the 1hr glucose test. About 15 mins to go, and then I can finally eat something sweet today!! I had scrambled eggs and an English muffin for breakfast, so I'm hoping it won't impact my results. I'm getting pretty hungry for lunch, though. It's been about 4 hours since I last ate something.

I failed my glucose test! I have to go back Monday for the three hour. Any tips from anyone whose done it?
Also, apparently my iron levels are pretty low, so the doctor recommended I take ferrous sulfate every day.

@mrskoloa: I'm an October 2013 mom who had GD. My tips would be to limit your carbs over the next few days and to drink a lot of water the night before your test.

@mrskoloa: I failed the one hour with DS and passed the second time. I think they have you fast for the 3 hour (if I remember
correctly) and I tried to eat lots of protien and water the evening before. How much did you fail by?
pomegranate / 3980 posts
@mrskoloa: I've seen a lot of people fail the first part but pass the second, hopefully that is the case for you I do have to take iron supplements though, my iron was was a incredibly low! It's not so bad as long as you can take a pill and not a liquid supplement!

@bushelandapeck: I have no idea what my actual numbers were because the nurse called before my actual dr appointment this coming Wednesday.
@cyndistar3: I hope that's the case for me, too. I was starving after the one-hour test; I hope I can make it through the three-hour one!

I think I will be taking my GTT next month sometime, though it hasn't been scheduled yet. I go to a new OB in the morning and I hope that they are nice... I'm having all kinds of second thoughts about switching now. Hopefully they will let me see what a good OB office is supposed to be like so I have no hesitation at all.
Speaking of sweets, I had a bit of a breakdown today on the way home with DH from Home Depot. I suddenly got the craving for a vanilla sundae with caramel on it and I asked DH to stop somewhere on the way. He purposefully passed the one we were closest to (he says he was trying to go to the frozen yogurt place closer to our house) and I started crying. Pretty embarrassing, really. I kept telling him to just go home but he turned around to get me my ice cream. I haven't had many other emotional moments like this, so I hate when they crop up. But on the plus side baby was dancing around like crazy while I ate it!

@Mrs.Panda I burst into sobs last week during an argument. The second trimester emotional roller coaster has been really, really rough for me. I got a new job and so I start at the end of the month, which makes me really anxious, and I'm going to also be changing doctors (with my new job, I can't be waiting 45min for a 5 minute appointment, plus I feel like my doctor is just like, "oh, you're having a healthy pregnancy, go away" and I don't really feel like I can contact them with questions and stuff.)
I've been really concerned that my sugar intake is too high - but I keep craving it. Anyone have any ideas for a good way to re-set my sugar craving level besides completely cutting it out for awhile? I'm a vegetarian so I'm trying for high protein snacks and chocolate milk is a big one, so I'm reluctant to cut that, but I want to cut the empty sugar calories.
pomelo / 5720 posts
@mrskoloa: The 3 hour one was tough...I was allowed to drink water throughout it though, which helped some. I also packed a snack and ate it as soon as the test was over. When is yours scheduled for?
@Mrs.Panda: I hope you like your new OB and the practice! I'm waiting to see how my appointment on Weds goes as I am considering switching providers as well. Hopefully she will be on time for a change so I don't have to!
@Ms.Mermaid: Good lucj with your new job! The situation you are in wtith your OB sounds a lot like mine....I wait sometimes almost an hour for her to tell me things look great-see you in a month! So annoying. As for the sugar...I'm not much help because I eat my fair share of candy. The only time I've been successful in cutting back was when I eliminated it completely. I try to reach for sweet fruits like grapes, cherries, and strawberries but it doesn't always work. I eat very healthy otherwise though, so I try to tell myself it's not too big of a deal if I eat a few Starbursts each day

@mrskoloa: no tips but good luck with the 3 hour! I bet it will turn out fine
@Mrs.Panda: I cry at anything and everything these days...sigh I'm over crying at commercials, soccer matches, stupid tv dramas. Also what is with being pregnant and ice cream? I MUST have it every night.
@Ms.Mermaid: Good luck with your new job! My appointments are pretty quick, as well, but they are very patient for any questions I may have.
@bushelandapeck: Hope your appointment on Wednesday is a better one!
At my 24 week check up last week I found out that due to my slightly elevated blood pressure, 130/80, I'm not allowed to deliver past my due date. So if I don't go on my own before 10/25 I have to be induced, which is a bummer since I was really hoping for a med/intervention free birth. I know that we can't control these things though so that's life...the other pain in the rear is that at 32 weeks I have to get growth scans weekly. The MFM office and my OB are in two different locations so I'll basically be running all over the city on public transportation twice a week for 8 weeks woohoo!!! On the plus side I get to see the baby all the time which is pretty cool

@Mrs.Panda: emotional meltdowns are totally acceptable during pregnancy...no worries!! Ice cream is totally worth crying over! And I forget, why are you switching obs?
@Ms.Mermaid: Wow - another one changing doctors? While I have been waiting WAYYY too long for my appointments lately, I guess I am really lucky that I like my doctor. I wouldn't want to deal with making the swap mid-pregnancy. And good luck with your new job! What will you be doing?
I wouldn't worry too much about your sugar intake - I'm a big fan of "give the baby what the baby wants." If you are eating a well-balance diet otherwise, I don't think some candy, ice cream, etc is a bad thing. I mean, I wouldn't eat solely sugars, but having two cookies with lunch is a regular occurrence for me!
And YES!!! to the crazy mood swings; I've been an absolutely emotional roller coaster these past couple weeks. Starting the progesterone definitely didn't help, either. At first it made me a complete crazy-person...totally irritable/bitchy. The worst part was, I could totally sense that I was doing it, but I couldn't do anything to prevent myself from being a psycho. The irrational tears came a couple days later. siiiigh. I ended up skipping a dose on Friday night because I just needed a break. I have a doctor appointment tomorrow and another one on Friday to check-in on my cervix (which is with the doctor that prescribed the progesterone), so I definitely plan to ask if this is normal. I can handle a little leakage, but the emotional uncertainty is tough, both for me and the rest of my fam! Lol. This may be TMI, but I'm also wondering if there would be any effects on my husband if we were to be intimate while I'm taking these suppositories. I'm on pelvic rest, so we're not "supposed to" have sex, but depending on how I'm feeling, I'd like to keep it to once or twice a month! (poor hubs).
So anyone been thinking more about baby names? We're still set on our boy name: Zachary Michael. I have a short list of girl names, but we're not 100% on any yet. The most recent list includes still has Aubrey Michelle in the #1 spot. Others we are liking are Elizabeth (Lizzie), Elise, Allie, and Katherine.

@Ms.Mermaid, @Mrs.Panda: Aww! I'm totally out of control too! I had to make a call to my OB practice on the 4th with a question, and while the OB on call was reassuring, she was pretty businesslike, so of course when I got off the phone, DH asked how it went so I answered, "She said it's all ok" and started sobbing. He was like, "Why are you crying?", and I could only answer back, "Because I'm pregnant!"
He just looked at me, completely baffled and then fed me spoonfuls of the guacamole he was making at the time, so at least he knows how to quiet me down!
@cmbknyc: Wow, that sounds like a lot of running around! Hope your LO keeps growing and all those extra appointments bring good news!
@mrskoloa: Bummer on the 1-hour test! But like lots of others have said, I've heard about loads of people who go on to have no problem with the 3-hour, so FX that's the case with you!
@bunnylovesbear: It sounds like you've got a lot going on at the moment! I don't wonder it's tough to keep the emotional side of things predictable! Hopefully your doctor will have some insight on if/how the progesterone affects things!

@bunnylovesbear: Sorry the progesterone has been such a pain Hopefully it helps and will all be worth it in the end!
We haven't settled on a name yet. My DH and I are clearly on opposite ends of the universe when it comes to names we like, so finding a few that we agree on has resulted in more than a few arguments. I think we are leaning towards Joesphine "Josie" Maeve. Maeve is sort of a combo of my grandmothers middle names Mae and Vera. We also like Rosemary and Giana, but we can't use the latter because our neighbors daughter has a similar name. I really love Emmeline and Eloise but DH doesn't.
@Ms.Pumpkin: I also can't believe we are all coming up on the 3rd trimester! I feel like I have SO much still to do and zero motivation to do any of it! lol.
kiwi / 600 posts
@cyndistar3: My daughter's name is Kaley...both those middle names squished into one first name!! Funny story: After my daughter was born and named, I realized my paternal grandmother's nickname was Kay and my sister's (DD's godmother) middle name is Lee!! Kinda wacky, right? Alexis Kaley or Alexis Kayleigh or even Alexis Kaylea (to keep your spelling) could work nicely!
I can't believe how quickly this pregnancy is going by, as well. While i feel like I've been pregnant FOREVER, I cannot believe I'm beginning the third trimester and the baby will be here in a couple short months!
kiwi / 600 posts
@bushelandapeck: I love Josephine/Josie. That used to be on our short list, too...but since it's our niece's middle name, we ultimately decided it would be too weird to use as our DD's first name. I know I would be super annoyed if my SIL used part of one of my children's names, so I can't do that same to her! Lol.
pomelo / 5720 posts
@bunnylovesbear: I hear you...My sister has 4 girls and my SIL has 2 so we've been really limited by the names/middle names they have chosen. I don't even want to choose something that is remotely similar! lol.

@bunnylovesbear: That is so crazy! My paternal grandmother's middle name is Kay and his maternal grandmother's middle name is Lea. Dh admits that he likes how it sounds but he doesn't get along with his grandma anymore so he is being a butt lol.

So the three hour test was uncomfortable. I got the orange flavor for the one hour, which wasn't so bad, but I had the red flavor for this one and it seemed so much worse. I didn't mind the four blood draws, but I felt ill during the first hour, sleepy during the second hour, and totally fine the third hour. I'll find out my results on Wednesday at my 7mo appt.

@bushelandapeck: When do you find out if you passed?
@bunnylovesbear: Loving those capris!
@cyndistar3: Where did you get that shower curtain? I really like the design on it.
In other news, I do NOT have diabetes, thank goodness. And although the three-hour test was not very fun, I'm glad I have the peace of mind now that I'm not unwittingly harming baby or myself with my raging insulin (or non-raging?) levels.
Other things I learned from the doctor today:
Non-alcoholic beer has not had many studies done on it to determine whether or not it is safe to drink during pregnancy.
Ben wa balls, or any other vaginal weights, do not make a difference in practicing kegals. Doctor says that it's better to practice kegals post-partum rather than pre-birth... but I have read otherwise from the interwebs. It's a draw.
Leg cramps while sleeping are totally normal, but may be assuaged with calcium supplements.
And finally, sometimes when I feel period-like cramps, those are actually Braxton-Hicks contractions.

My appt yesterday was pretty uneventful. I'm up 4lbs since my last appt 5 weeks ago and have to start going back every 3 weeks now that I'm in the 3rd trimester. I also have to decide about whether or not to get a TDap shot at my next appt. I had one less than 2 years ago when I was pregnant before but apparently they are recommending women get one every pregnancy now so that some of the immunity passes to the baby. I'm not opposed to doing it but it would be nice to actually see the studies they are basing this on....
I'm debating about a doula as well. I had one last time (sort of) but ended up delivering without her assistance so I'm torn about needing/wanting one this time. Anyone else considering one?

@mrskoloa: @bushelandapeck: @bunnylovesbear: @cyndistar3: @Mrs.Panda: You ladies are just too too cute!!!
@mrskoloa: hooray!!!! Also, thanks for the tips on leg cramping, I've been getting charlie horses every so often and and they are NOT fun.
@cyndistar3: Beautiful name I'm loving all the names everyone is choosing!
@bushelandapeck: FX that you don't get a call! If you find any of those TDap studies please pass them along! I'm going to a meet your local doula's event next weekend. I really would like a doula, especially since this is my first birth.
cherry / 242 posts
@bushelandapeck: @cmbknyc: I was thinking of a doula as well, more for post-partum help than anything. My family doesn't live on island and won't be present for the birth, and my husband's family is so busy I wouldn't want to bother them.
Does anyone have experience with a post-partum doula?
pomelo / 5720 posts
@cmbknyc: no call so I'm hoping that means I passed! @mrskoloa: I was considering just a postpartum one as well but then realized we will likely still need to pay our nanny while I'm on leave and I should just use her instead. PP doulas around here are $25-40/hour which is quite a bit more than what I pay our nanny. I wish I had one with my first though as I really didn't have a lot of support and no family around.
kiwi / 600 posts
@mrskoloa: Thank you! I'm loving the capris, too. I'm feeling so much more attractive since buying myself some new, comfy clothes. I've been THE WORST at keeping up with my laundry lately...it's hard when I'm not supposed to be carrying baskets of laundry up/down the stairs and my husband works til 8pm. Lol.
@bushelandapeck: Glad to hear you passed your test. I found out on Tuesday that I did, too. He said I was slightly anemic, but that's to be expected during pregnancy.
Not too much more to report from my appointment earlier this week. I learned that I'm up EIGHT POUNDS since my last appointment...yikes! I don't feel like I'm looking too big yet, and I'm busting out of my bras lately, so I'm thinking it's bc of my boobs. Lol. It's definitely time to buy a couple news ones in the next size up. My doc also joked that this pregnancy has been much more eventful than my last (in reference to the cervix/progesterone stuff). I joked that I feel pretty good, other than the medication making me a crazy person. He just joked back to me, but didn't offer any advice, as I'd hoped. I'll have to bring it up with my other doctor today at my cervix check.
I have no experience with doulas, so I don't have any input there. However, I have been thinking about what it will be like around my house when this little one arrives. I'm getting a little anxious about the combination of having a c-section delivery, newborn, AND a two-year old that goes nonstop. I'm considering starting him in day care earlier than we originally planned to help make the transition a little easier for both of us. Anyone else with little ones at home already that have been thinking about this?
cherry / 143 posts
I love seeing bump pictures, it is so fun to compare and see how everyone is doing. I don't take many, because I feel silly asking my husband to do it, and we don't have a full-size mirror at home.
I had a midwife appointment this week where my blood pressure was a bit too high. I ended up at the hospital for a while where they monitored it, and it didn't drop by much, so I need to go in twice a week to get it monitored. No other symptoms of pre-eclampsia and they aren't calling it hypertension at the moment (I'm borderline) but it is weird to no longer just be considered normal and healthy. So basically no treatment, no change in my routine, just try to stay calm and keep coming in. (And like they said over and over, call if I have even the slightest symptom change - like getting blurred vision or headaches, none of which I have right now.) Anyone have any experience with this at all? I'm 27 weeks today, by the way.
cherry / 143 posts
Haha, also have to add, I have no idea how much weight I've gained! Is that terrible? We don't own a scale, and midwives here don't weigh you unless there's a reason ... they do measure your uterus when you lie down (after listening to the baby's heartbeat) so I know that's exactly the right size. Do you get weighed and measured, in the US? (I'm in England.)
nectarine / 2358 posts
@ottilie: I would go and get a scale because one of the monitoring aspects of PreE is checking your weight. If you have a significant with increase (like 2 pounds in 2 days I think?) toy should call your doctor. Same with any swelling in your legs/ankles and face. I'm not an L&D nurse I'm just remembering from my coursework in nursing school
I had my first noticeable Braxton Hicks contraction tiday. It was uncomfortable and weird! I drank some water and changed positions as I was already laying down. I may have been dehydrated and the baby had just finished a kicking frenzy. Anyone else with BH? I'm 25 weeks tomorrow.
kiwi / 600 posts
@ottilie: yup, I get weighed in at the start of every check-up with my ob. I don't put much thought into it, though. It's crazy to think I've already gained nearly 20 pounds, but at the same time, I know I look good and have been eating balanced meals, so I'm not concerned with how much weight I gain.
@Mrs.Panda: oh yes...I've been having them for weeks now. I don't remember getting them in either of my prior two pregnancies, so it was weird at first. Now, it's just an almost-daily occurrence.
Oh, and my cervix check went well today. No change in my cervix for the first time since I've been monitored, so I suppose the progesterone must be doing its job. I did voice my concerns with my mood/emotions being all over the place, and the doctor seemed surprised. She feels strongly that I should continue through until 36 weeks, but doesn't want me to not feel like myself. So she's instructed me to only use half a capsule each night. I'm relieved and hopeful bc my roller coaster emotions were getting to be too much!
cherry / 242 posts
@ottilie: My doctor tests my urine, takes my weight, measures my uterus, and uses the doppler for the heartbeat at every appointment.
cherry / 242 posts
@bunnylovesbear: Speaking of roller-coaster emotions, I could have killed a girl last night! I had a group of girls over for dinner, and we were talking about the World Cup. One of the girls is originally from Argentina, and I had said something along the lines of how many of the games don't seem to have a lot of action until after the 85th minute (due to the high caliber of the teams playing). She literally said, "Well, you don't know much about soccer because you're an American." I almost had a heart attack! mostly because I grew up in Japan, where soccer is one of the major sports. When I mentioned that to her she said, "But Japan sucks at soccer." I couldn't even sleep last night until three AM because I was seething with rage! Today it doesn't seem AS big of a deal, yeah she was still rude, but I will probably sleep at a normal time tonight rather than think of all of the things I wish I had said, starting with kicking her the hell out of my house!
