I see a lot of people saying they bring their own night gowns to the hospital, what kind are you bringing? As a nurse we get kind of annoyed when people don't wear our gowns because it makes access to different parts of the body difficult and also makes it harder to tell who is a patient. I'm sure it's very different in L&D as you definitely know who is a preggo patient and there obviously are no men, but I'm concerned about the access part. And do night gowns get tangled in the bed? I would prefer not to wear those big open back gowns but I'm kind of at a loss as to what to wear since I don't sleep in a night gown at home because they are uncomfortable when they get twisted. Sorry to be a jumble of thoughts, I just don't want to buy something that I will regret but also don't want to kick myself for being uncomfortable.

@cmbknyc: awww boo to being induced! Do you have preeclampsia? I'm sorry you're having to go through that... but you get to meet your baby sooner! And I loooove lists too!

    kiwi / 630 posts

@Mrs.Panda: I was wondering the same thing! I usually sleep in just a tshirt but I think I'm going to look for a a long tshirt pj with buttons down the front. Now I just need to find that lol

No pre-e yet but my normal bp before pregnancy was 130/80 and it's stayed that way throughout so they are concerned it may turn into pre-e. It's not the birth I imagined but I'm learning quickly that not much is that way in pregnancy haha

  8. mrskoloa

    cherry / 242 posts

@Mrs.Panda: I, too, was wondering about the nightgowns. I bought a robe in case I want my back covered if I'm walking around... but I would hate to buy a nightgown if it's going to make life harder in the hospital

  9. wonderstruck

    pomegranate / 3791 posts

@Mrs.Panda: @cmbknyc: @mrskoloa: It never occurred to me that a nightgown could be an issue, none of my nurses ever had a problem with it! I actually asked and they encouraged me to change into it, and I felt so much more human in PJs as opposed to the hospital gown. The reason I went with a nightgown rather than PJs that had a top and bottom was so that they still had easy access to everything. The one I wore last time was stretchy and had a low neckline for nursing, was sleeveless, and about knee-length so that it wasn't getting tangled in anything and wasn't any longer than a hospital gown would have been anyways.

And as far as telling who the patient is goes...well, I was laying in a bed wearing pajamas with an IV stuck in my hand. I think it was fairly obvious, haha! I never left my room so there was never any worries about people seeing stuff when I was walking down the halls, I just found the hospital gown to be uncomfortable and was always worried I was about to flash my dad or FIL or something. I packed a robe too but ended up finding it to be too heavy and uncomfortable, if you're going to do that I definitely recommend something lightweight. But the nightgowns I wore were similar to this style: http://www.target.com/p/women-s-fluid-knit-chemise/-/A-15584492#prodSlot=large_1_1

  10. mrskoloa

    cherry / 242 posts

@wonderstruck: That's simple enough. I was thinking along the lines of a muu muu or something bulky. I can't get over the image of the nightgowns of my childhood.

  11. wonderstruck

    pomegranate / 3791 posts

@mrskoloa: Haha! Yeah, I can see it causing issues if it was the of nightgown my mom picked out for me as a kid.

  12. bushelandapeck

    pomelo / 5720 posts

@cmbknyc: sorry to hear about the high bp. I hope it stays okay and you don't have to be induced too early.

@Mrs.Panda: I actually wore a tank too and short stretchy skirt during labor. I pushed in a sports bra and took the skirt off. I was much more comfortable wearing that than I would have been with a gown on. I did put a gown on briefly after delivery when I was brought to the recovery room but then changed into yoga pants and a nursing top for the rest of my stay. I'm probably weird but I also showered everyday and wore makeup

The nursery is almost finished! Waiting for a light to be installed and some prints I ordered for the wall and that's it! It's giving me the urge to decorate everywhere in our house so I spent some time pulling our fall decorations out today. I love this time of year! 36w appt tomorrow and group B strep test. Hopefully all is well. I think I have to go weekly from here on.

I just had so many responses typed up on my phone, and somehow lost my connection and post. Siiiigh. I'm too tired to redo it all now. Maybe tomorrow... I hate when that happens!

  14. bushelandapeck

    pomelo / 5720 posts

@bunnylovesbear: hate that!! Also wanted to say I hope you don't end up on bed rest! I can't imagine how hard that would be, especially with a toddler running around. I have been having similar pelvic/pubic pain that is quite different from last time. I'm going to mention it at my appointment today but I assume they won't check for dilation, as they don't usually. We'll see!

  15. Ms.Pumpkin

    apricot / 435 posts

@cmbknyc: Oh no! Sorry to hear about the high BP, I hope that all works out for you and your babe in a way that you're comfortable with! But yeah, I totally hear you on having to readjust expectations- all of my friends with kids have said that repeatedly, and with every milestone in this pregnancy, I'm learning that things aren't ever what I expected them to be!

@wonderstruck, @mrskoloa: Haha, thanks for bringing up the image of my childhood nightgowns... massive floral flannel monstrosities with high necks and ruffles... the 80s were definitely a low point in fashion as far as I'm concerned!

I bought a light jersey robe to wear, but haven't made a decision on whether to bring anything to wear underneath, or to just go with the hospital gowns. If I can find something cheap at Target, might just bring that along just in case? Or just bring along one of the nursing tanks I bought from Target.

Oh, btw, the Bravado nursing tanks at Target are AMAZING. I've got a normal-sized ribcage and gigantic boobs (like, 34 F pre-preg, I'm scared to get measured now.), so normal bras and tanks have never fit, and these actually do! And they're supportive! I think there's some kind of magic in them.

I've got my 35 week appt today, and they'll be doing the GBS test and confirming the baby's position (head down, breech, etc). So hoping for good news from them!

We're making slooow progress on the nursery, I had a little emotional breakdown at Costco the other day when they didn't have the glider I wanted in stock at that store (this kind of thing is happening more regularly, DH is getting really good at dealing with it, poor soul). But we'll get there. But last week we met with a pediatrician, and we both liked him, so that's another thing checked off the list! Baby girl will have a doctor, which brings the "We're so not ready" panic down a notch.

  16. wonderstruck

    pomegranate / 3791 posts

@Ms.Pumpkin: We had glider problems here too - I found an amazing deal online, but they sent the wrong color and had none left of what I wanted! Now I have to deal with sending this gigantic box back, I was so not happy.

Good tip on the nursing bra! I've been living in my coobie bras lately, but even those are getting a bit tight. I used to be like a size C, but went up to a DD after pregnancy #1, never went back down even after I weaned, and now they're getting even larger this pregnancy - eek!

  17. Mrs.Panda

    nectarine / 2358 posts

@mrskoloa: @wonderstruck: yes I envisioned the giant nightgowns! Okay that makes more sense lol. I work ina largely geriatric community and they are the little old ladies who bring their house coats and whatnot. I'm like I get that you want to be comfortable but I have to peel off 5 layers to assess you! Lol

@Ms.Pumpkin: I bought their other brand there Gilliland something and it's going back since it makes me look like I have cone boobs. Not the look I'm going for. My boobs haven't grown this pregnancy really but I will definitely check out the Bravado brand!

We still haven't bought a glider... hopefully in a couple of weeks when we decide what we want! I don't want those wooden kinds but otherwise they are so expensive!

  18. cmbknyc

@wonderstruck: thanks for the link! I was thinking of something like that good to know it works!

@bushelandapeck: thanks! I'm keeping my fingers crosse that all will work out well how was your dr appt? Any explanations for the pelvic pain/pressure? Hope you post some pics of your nursery when you're finished!

@bunnylovesbear: ugh that's the worst!!! Hope you're feeling well!

@Ms.Pumpkin: thanks! We can only control so much it seems, a good lesson for this control freak lol Ooooooo do you mind my asking what size you purchased on the bravado tanks? I'm a 34 G/H when I'm not pregnant so I've been on the fence re:nursing tanks bec most don't have much support! And I hear you on panic, I've had some episodes here and there and ticking things off my list definitely helps!! I hope you get a glider you love

  19. cmbknyc

    kiwi / 630 posts

@Mrs.Panda: yeah we chose not to do a glider, both for space issues (NYC apts are small haha) and cost. We already had a small sofa in that room before it became a nursery so hopefully we won't miss not having a glider and the sofa will suffice

  20. Ms.Pumpkin

    apricot / 435 posts

@cmbknyc: I was shocked at how it actually fit! I ended up getting a large, because that provided the best coverage up top (plus, my rib cage has definitely expanded over the last 8 mos ). I do have to clarify that I feel it's good enough for hanging around the house, or running errands on a weekend. No way would I wear it to work. But I didn't even expect that much from a tank, and I'm suuper picky about my bras. I'm planning on wearing the tanks around the house for maternity leave, and then when my size regulates after a while, I'll go and get professionally fitted and plonk down a bunch of $$$ on nice nursing bras.

My appointment went well- the GBS test was no big deal, and the doctor did an internal check to confirm the baby's position. Baby's currently at a -2 station, so she's definitely dropped, which the Dr. says explains the pressure I've been feeling way down low! He also said that I was 50% effaced, or at least soft enough that he didn't want to try too hard to check dilation, as the check could actually cause me to dilate more.

I was a little worried, but apparently I can walk around like this for another 4 weeks and still go past my due date, so at least I don't think I have to worry about preterm labor. I've been having bunches of BH contractions though, so he did say to "take it easy"... huh. Easy for him to say- I've still got to work every day!

  21. cmbknyc

    kiwi / 630 posts

@Ms.Pumpkin: awesome thanks for the feedback, this helps a lot! Yeah, I was thinking of using them around the house and then getting some fancier actual nursing bras for when I leave the house.

Sounds like a productive dr appt! It must feel good to know your body is moving in the right direction I love that, everyone is constantly telling me to relax and take it easy - hard to do when you're still working lol

@bushelandapeck: yay to your nursery almost being complete! How did your 36 week check go?
@Ms.Pumpkin: wow, can't believe you maybe dilating already, how exciting. So glad baby is in correct position and getting ready to go. How long do you have left to work?

At the hospital I have a knee length cotton nightie/ long tshirt to give birth in and then 2 sets of thin pjs for later, I couldn't care less about if I have to lie on a bed naked or get my boobs out in the ward for feeding so I'm happy to just pull my top down or take it off if easier!

We are having an awful time at the moment, DH mother and father have split up, effectively leaving her homeless, she has come to live with us short term until she can find somewhere, but at 37 weeks pregnant its less than ideal for us. I'm struggling a lot with the resentment that she is here as I want this time for DH to enjoy our last few weeks together and then a few weeks if adjusting to becoming a family. At the same time I'm sad for her as its 35 years of marriage over, I just don't have it in me to be there for her just now. Life at home is awful for all of us including poor DH who is especially in the middle. Ulgh Im so fed up!

Next appointment is on Monday, 38 weeks!

@bushelandapeck: I definitely don't want to end up on bed rest, but I'm seriously considering starting my leave a week earlier than planned, even if the dr clears me to continue working. I'm feeling like I have so much to do and it's overwhelming..:there's just not enough time and energy in the day. Lol.

@Ms.Pumpkin: I got a light robe and affordable nightgowns from Target. I totally recommend bringing your own comfy pjs. It was the best decision I made with my son and wish I changed into it sooner.

@wonderstruck: ugh...how annoying! How off is the color? Id be totally tempted to just keep the glider instead of dealing with the headache of retuning it!

@cmbknyc: thank you...I'm feeling okay. Still lots and lots of pressure. And I made the mistake of attending my older daughter's middle school back-to-school night. There was WAY too much walking involved (we had to follow their schedule) and now I'm paying the price. Definitely a baaaad decision on my part; I haven't walked that much in months.

  24. bunnylovesbear

    kiwi / 600 posts

@cmbknyc: we also put a small sofa in our nursery. We have a big comfy rocker from our DS, but it's rarely used. The house is much better.

  25. wonderstruck

    pomegranate / 3791 posts

@bunnylovesbear: It is annoying - unfortunately, it's not even close! I ordered a dark brown color and got ivory. The seller already sent me the return label, I just need to setup a day for UPS to come pick it up...which is going to cost money but there is no way I'm taking this thing anywhere!

And I started maternity leave earlier than planned last time - sometimes you just have to! I wanted to laugh whenever my midwife told me to take it easy while I was still working.

@Mrs tartan: OMG. That is TERRIBLE! I know exactly how you feel about wanting to be empathetic but also feeling like this is YOUR time. How long does she plan on living with you folks for? Did you want to join our facebook group?

  28. Mrs tartan

    kiwi / 656 posts

@mrskoloa: just until she finds a place of her own, I'm pushing for it constantly but I think it would be unlikely it will happen before the baby arrives
Yes I'd love to, however I've taken a break from Facebook with the family drama going on and temporarily deactivated my account. As soon as it dies down ill be sure to join in. Thank you. Any twinges or anything for you yet? I'm getting sorer in my pelvis each day and suffering from crotch lightening but other than that nothing. Even my BH have disappeared!

  29. mrskoloa

    cherry / 242 posts

@Mrs tartan: I am either having BH right now, or real contractions. The only reason I say that is because I've pooped so much the last three days, which is VERY unusual for me. Then again, we have been eating chili for the last three dinners as well, so it might not be anything! Other than that, no other real symptoms. I haven't seen anything looking like a mucous plug during my trips to the toilet. I've been doing a ton of walking lately, and even having sex (under the guise of "well, we won't be doing much of it after the baby is here") in order to kick start labor because I am sick sick sick of waiting! And by waiting, I mean being huge, swollen, and wondering what giving birth is like! And working of course.

  30. Mrs tartan

    kiwi / 656 posts

@mrskoloa: eeeeeek how exciting! Are you at work? I don't know what time it is with you, here it's 8.30am.
    Are the contractions sore? Regular?

  31. mrskoloa

    cherry / 242 posts

@Mrs tartan: nope I'm at home. It's about 9:45 pm here so I'm in bed. Now that I've laid down they have subsided so must be BH after all. I do have some back achiness, which is unusual for me. They don't hurt so it's hard to tell if I'm supposed to be timing anything.

  32. bushelandapeck

    pomelo / 5720 posts

@cmbknyc: my doctors appointment went fine. My OB basically said "uh huh" when I told her about the pressure. Super unhelpful. It seems that it's more common to have it earlier in subsequent pregnancies so I'm just trying not to sit in one place for too long. I had my strep test as well, and will be going weekly now for appointments.

@Mrs tartan: I'm so sorry to hear about things with your MIL. Mine lived with us for almost three months, soon after we bought our home 4 years ago. It was one of the most difficult experiences we have dealt with as a couple and I have made it clear to my DH that it's not something I'd be capable of doing again. I hope she is able to respect your need to be a family of 3 and that the living situation is very short term.

@bunnylovesbear: I hear ya! My last official day is 10/1 but I'm planning on continuing to work until I deliver because I don't want to lose any of my leave time. Because I'm only part time, I don't qualify for FMLA anymore so there is virtually no flexibility with when I go back, at least on paper anyway. I haven't had another convo with my boss about leave since she brought it up at 15w pregnant. I think she assumes I'm going to quit and hasn't bothered to try talking to me about it again.

I will post some nursery pics today or tomorrow. It's finished aside from the wall hangings I ordered and putting the rocking chair in it (we currently use it in the LR). I also have to organize the shelves a bit and reassemble the swing.

My local mom friends threw me surprise sprinkle last night under the guise of a girls night, which we usually do once a month. It was so sweet! They made me a basket full of postpartum things I will need like nipple cream, snacks, water bottle, and breast pads. I feel so lucky to have met such great women since having my son.

  33. Ms.Pumpkin

    apricot / 435 posts

@Mrs tartan: I'm going to be working up until my due date, unfortunately. If I go beyond my due date, I'll reassess. I'm hoping to increase my work at home days (I currently WAH 1 day a week) starting next week, and then the first week of Oct just be WAH full time. I only get 12 weeks of leave, so I don't want to waste any of it before LO gets here!

What a mess with your MIL situation, I think it's perfectly normal to have those feelings- you're absolutely going through a lot right now as well! I hope that this transitional period for your MIL will be short, for her sake as well as yours!

@mrskoloa: As the first Oct due date, it's so exciting to see you getting so close! It'll happen before you know it!

@bunnylovesbear: I think that the robe was a good purchase, and from hearing all of the stories here, I'll probably just try to find a cheap nightgown as well, just in case. I hope that you are able to catch a break at work- and if taking an extra week off will help you not overdo it, then that sounds like a pretty good move to make.

@bushelandapeck: What a great surprise from your friends! It seems like having local mom friends is so important- I've already been leaning on several of the ladies in my neighborhood, and I can see how useful it will be to be able to just talk about parenting issues with people who really understand.

@wonderstruck: Ugh- ivory just does not sound good, I agree that it would start looking pretty dingy pretty fast. Do you really have to pay to return an item that the company messed up on? That seems really unfair to have to pay a fee in addition to having to go through the effort of making the return!

  34. Ms.Pumpkin

    apricot / 435 posts

One other question- has anyone else's DH started getting a little twitchy? I suppose it's different for the second and third-time moms, since your DHs have already been there, done that, and know what to expect.

I think that the childbirth classes are starting to have an effect on my DH. Now every time I get up in the night to pee, he wakes up and asks, "are you ok?" Dude. Just going to the bathroom, like I have been doing every night for ages! Pay no attention to the enormous lady lumbering to the bathroom for the umpteenth time that night!

It's cute, but way too early to be on labor watch. Is it wrong that I don't feel all that bad about him waking up with me? Share the love! Share the whole experience!

  35. cyndistar3

    pomegranate / 3980 posts

@Ms.Pumpkin: LOL this is number three for us and dh still asks me if I'm okay if I get up at night to go to the bathroom though it is fairly rare that I get up at night so I guess he might have reason to ask.

I'm starting to get impatiently excited to meet this baby, my hormones are in overdrive and every time I see the 3d ultrasound I tear up a bit! My new swing and pack n play got here today and I just want to set them up but it would just be taking up space lol...

  36. wonderstruck

    pomegranate / 3791 posts

@Ms.Pumpkin: I fought them on having to pay for return shipping since it was their mistake, not mine. They agreed and sent me the label to return it...but unless I want to drag this giant box to the UPS store I still have to pay a small fee for them to come pick it up from my home. I'm just going that because frankly I want to be done with it!

My DH never wakes up at night when I do! Also, a confession...I really really hope my water breaks in bed at night. I want a new mattress really bad and my DH thinks it's a waste of money. Haha! But every time I grab my stomach for any reason he asks if the baby is coming. It's quite annoying.

Can I just say that I went out to dinner with my husband tonight and decided to order my prime rib medium....it felt so good to actually eat red meat! Lol. I figured, at this point if I were to go into labor the doctor's wouldn't stop it, so that means I can eat my meat how I want now! YUM.

In other news, my boss has finalized my maternity coverage so I'm feeling much less stress about the possibility of starting my leave earlier than expected. I'm anxious to hear what my doc has to say at my appointment on Monday. I'll be a day shy of 36 weeks at that point. I've also been toying with the idea of asking about the possibility of getting my tubes tied during my surgery. I'm not even sure if that's something that can be done during a c-section, but my husband and I have already determined that this will be our last child...so I figured while they have me opened up, why not? Anyone have any thoughts on that? Or have any knowledge/info to share? The only person I know that had this procedure done ended up pregnant a month after she was told the surgery was a success...

@wonderstruck: what a pain! I would throw another fit and refuse to pay any fees. It was their mistake, not yours. They shouldn't expect a pregnant lady to have transport a glider anywhere!

@Ms.Pumpkin: My Mom is more twitchy than my husband, but yes, he's a bit more on edge lately. So are my coworkers. And honestly, so am I!! I'm planning to get my hospital bag packed this weekend...as well as finish up my closet/dresser cleaning/reorganizing project, as well. I also purchased our crib mattress yesterday, so I'm looking forward to setting up the bedding now that the crib is assembled AND the mattress has been bought. Oh, and I bought the cutest "going home from the hospital" outfits, too. I bought both a boy and girl version...

@Mrs tartan: I'm so sorry you're going through that! I would be so stressed out to have my mother in law in the house and I actually like her her and she is quite independent. Like, too independent at times!

I can't believe some of you ladies are getting so close! I still have 6 weeks left and I'm working right up until my due date. Actually technically ON my due date since I work overnight shifts. I'm crazy! Luckily they have me in charge for most of next month so I won't be running around as much as if I had a full patient load (unless we are short and I have to be charge AND have a full patient loaf which would make me want to die).

So I'm 36 weeks now and have been told I'm not going past 38 weeks because of my blood pressure. Um, that is so soon. I've been told by loads of people to avoid induction if I can, which is super helpful, because I've been told it's medically necessary, so what do they expect me to say? My doctor has said he thinks I can go to 38 weeks as opposed to 37 because he wants me to have more time to go into labor on my own, if possible, so I really hate hearing from people how absolutely awful inductions are. My mother-in-law, in fact, claimed that her second birth (induction) was ten times harder than her first birth (twins) which was also very unhelpful. So that's where I am right now...the baby is still normal and healthy, but I'm looking at an induction at 38 weeks to help keep him that way.

@bunnylovesbear: those outfits are adorable! I have two choices as well, both girls, but I couldn't decide

I'm hoping to start packing a hospital bag this weekend and to reassemble the infant car seat. DH is gone for the night to close up our lake house so DS and I are puttering around the house and running errands. We'll see how that goes
