@ottilie: I'm sorry people haven't been more supportive to you. I was induced using pitocin and I was still able to have a med free birth, so it's not always as awful as people say. I was terrified of induction but when my water broke and my labor wasn't progressing, I had no choice but to go along with it. You want what's best for you and your baby and it sounds like this is it. Do you still have a lot to do to prepare for the baby or are you pretty much all set? I hope you are able to enjoy the next two weeks and not stress too much about the induction part...although I can only imagine how difficult that would be.
kiwi / 600 posts
@ottilie: try not to stress and do your best to ignore other people's warnings. Each pregnancy and delivery is different. Just because she had a bad experience with an induction, that doesn't mean you will!! And honestly, if this is your first, you will have nothing to compare it to!! So if you end up being induced, you won't even know if it's "worse" than going into labor naturally. It'll be your story and it will be wonderful. :). Maybe in the meantime you ask your husband to let her know you're feeling a little anxious and would rather some support right now...
@bushelandapeck: my husband is working this morning, so that's when I'm hoping to get some stuff done. There's a parade in my town this morning that I'm dying to bring Johnny to, but I'm nervous about the walking that will be involved, and after my experience with Back-to-School night, I really can't risk it. There are fireworks tonight that I'll go to, though. My husband will be home from work by then, so I'll have some back up to help with the little one.

@ottilie: Ugh, I hate it when people say unhelpful things like that! What do they expect you to do, put your baby in danger while you wait to go into labor because of their scary induction stories? I'd just shut that down with, "Well, I'm going to do whatever is safest for baby, so please spare me from having to listen to bad induction stories. My doctor and I have this under control." I'm pretty blunt though.
A few of my relatives also started in on the scary induction stories last time I saw them, which particularly annoys me because in my case I'll be lucky if I'm able to be induced instead of going straight in for a c-section! My doctor would also like baby to be born by 38 weeks (gestational diabetes plus now warning signs of pre-eclampsia, and baby is a little large) and since my son was an emergency c-section, they won't induce me unless I'm already at least a bit dilated/effaced on my own. Otherwise it's too dangerous to induce with a VBAC
Although after my last (non-induced!) labor experience, I already know I want an epidural anyways. The horror story anti-induction relatives are also anti-epidural, so to shut them up I just laugh and say, "Well, I'm getting an epidural ASAP anyways, so it really doesn't matter." Sometimes it gets me a judgy look, but I really don't care - my birth, my labor, my baby!

@ottilie: I am assuming you are trying not to use pain medications during the birth?

@bushelandapeck: how lovely of your friends to throw a little party.
@ottilie: have they given you an induction date? Ignore those awful people, at least you know what is happening and can be prepared. None of us know if we might end up getting induced, things can change at any point or babies may not want to come out once overdue. So who knows! In all honestly I'd quite happily be induced at 38 weeks instead of possibly waiting to 42 weeks anyway.
For those working right up to your due date or right up until you deliver - are you then prepared to go into labour at work? I have no idea how you would do this! The past 2 weeks I've been sore and getting bh, I think I would have left work early everyday thinking something was happening!
pomelo / 5720 posts
@bunnylovesbear: I wouldn't want to push it either if you've ha a scare already. The parade sounds like fun though! We ended up at an indoor play area nearby and I chased Charlie around for an hour and a half. I was exhausted! We both napped well this afternoon
Here are some nursery pics. I'm still waiting for the wall prints I ordered and the cushions for the window seats. I have a rocker but I have to dry clean the fabric (I stupidly chose ivory for it when DS was born). Otherwise I think we are good!

@ottilie: what is with people loving to tell horror stories? I've heard so many about every type of birth from my coworkers and friends that it makes me just go to a happy place in my brain when they start talking. Seriously I just gloss over and stare into space. Whatever. If I need to be induced, have a section, stand on my head, I'm going to do it. I'm not going to 42 weeks that's for damn sure. Even at my baby shower a friend was telling me all this research she had read about induced babies and having possible tactile sensation issues or something (again, glossed over) and finally I told her that if I need to be induced, I'm going to be and that I've researched my options very well with my doctor (haven't yet, oops). Plus my 6 month old niece, who I was holding -and is super awesome and normal- was an induction baby. Yeah, thanks for the two cents.
@Mrs tartan: if I go into labor at work I will have a coworker drive me. They are actually excited to and they hope I do go into labor then! The only thing that isn't ideal is that I'll be the charge nurse during the rest of my pregnancy so I'll kind of be leaving them to the wolves if I do go during my shift. Better than if I were on the floor and had to give my patients to someone else though. Let's just hope it doesn't happen!
@bushelandapeck: I love the room!!! It came out beautifully! I wish mine looked half as good!

@Mrs tartan: going into labor at work IS a big fear of mine. I'm not so worried about what will happen when I need to leave unexpectedly...I'm more worried about how my 4th graders will react if my water breaks in my classroom!! Lol.
@bushelandapeck: the nursery is looking great! And Charlie is getting so big.
I got a couple things accomplished yesterday...one being the crib bedding. Here's a peek. (Ignore the shelves in the background. They aren't staying there.)

@Mrs tartan: I'm not prepared really to go into labor at work, but I like to think I will have a little heads up prior to it happening. Last time, I lost my mucus plug about two days before I went into labor and then my water broke at home. I am assuming that I will feel something soon enough to know I need to head home or to the hospital before I am actually in labor at work, but who knows! I would be mortified if my water broke at work, but I work in a hospital so I think people would be pretty understanding
@Mrs.Panda: Thank you! I feel like it's still missing some color but hopefully the cushions and window seats will help a lot.
@bunnylovesbear: Thanks! I know...he's just SO big these days! I really can't believe how different he is all the time. I love your nursery too! Did you move Johnny to a big boy bed yet?
pomegranate / 3791 posts
Last night DS made the transition to his big boy bed! It went great - when we first put him on the bed he was bouncing and laughing and thought it was great. When we first turned off the lights and left the room at bedtime he screamed for about 30 seconds and then rolled around frantically for a minute, but then calmed right down and fell asleep pretty quickly. Slept through the night, and when he woke up this morning he was sitting up in bed waiting when I came in to get him. Yay!
So we are now done with painting, furniture assembly, the crib is in the nursery, the prints I got are in frames waiting to go up on the wall, and I set up the changing pad, humidifier, and wipes warmer on the dresser. Currently washing the crib bedding, and the new blinds for the nursery are coming today (the old ones let in a TON of light, the new ones are bamboo with a heavy lining and should look/work great - plus they're cordless.) Still left on the list is packing my hospital bag, installing the infant car seat bases in my and DH's vehicles, and finishing up the nursery (hanging the photos, putting clothes away in the dresser, setting up the monitor camera, etc.)
And tomorrow is my first cervical test plus my GBS swab. Fingers crossed I'm a bit dilated so that being induced is an option. But I'm kind of resigning myself to the idea of another c-section since I'm having a crazy amount of complications.

@wonderstruck: awesome that the first night went so well! I am secretly hoping DS will stay in his crib for at east another year. lol. I can't wait to see pictures of your nursery too-sounds lovely! Good luck at your appointment tomorrow!

So many lovely nurseries! I'm super procrastinating everything since we are keeping baby in our room for now. I've done nothing in preparation for this baby yet though I got my new swing and pack n play and I so want to set them up but it would just be taking up space... I need to catch up on house work before I do any of that! A few days ago I had my very first feelings of "what if this is too much and I can't do it?" Between girl scouts, my daughter in kindergarten, getting my sister to do her school work and getting everyone everywhere working around my toddlers nap schedule life has been a bit overwhelming. Thankfully my grandma is coming up next month so she can help out with some of it
@wonderstruck: I am so hoping your cervical check goes well and you get the vbac you are hoping for!

Thanks, everyone! I am definitely trying to enjoy the next week and a bit of non-baby time and tune out the people who want to tell me why indutions are bad. I don't have an induction actually booked yet (I think it might happen at my appointment tomorrow) but the date the high-risk doctor was suggesting was September 26. Like @bunnylovesbear said, this is my first baby, so I'll have nothing to compare it to, anyway! But thank you for all the support and encouragement here.
It is so fun seeing everyone's nurseries. We're doing everything pretty low-key and just have a crib with some bunting and matching crib skirt. Is now the right time to say the crib isn't even set up yet? We have a bassinet thing for next to our bed and that is what we're planning to use, but also hopefully we'll get it all set up sometime in the next week just in case we decide to use it. (Though I want the baby in our room at the beginning, I think.) Which means we have the basics - somewhere to sleep, a car seat, some clothes, diapers, etc.
I had a last-minute sort of shower recently, and it was great. The one funny thing was one of my aunts (who does not have kids!) decided to bring me diapers. Which is really nice, right? Except she brought me cloth diapers, after asking if I planned to CD and after I said no! Haha, it keeps making me laugh. I'm actually glad to have them I guess, since we'll probably try them at least, but I thought it was so funny how she made a point of asking my plans and then ignoring them. Oh, family...

@bushelandapeck: Nope, no big boy bed just yet. My MIL ended up purchasing us the same crib we got for Johnny (since they are sharing a room) and it converts to toddler and full size beds. Like you, I want to prolong the switch as long as possible! Lol. The thought of him being able to get himself out of bed on his own totally freaks me out. I'm too exhausted these days for nightly bedtime battles! Haha.
@wonderstruck: Oh wow! That story makes me less scared! How old is your son? And how in the world did you keep him from climbing OUT of his bed?!! I'm in awe. Sounds like you've made lots of progress with the nursery, too. Good work! I still have some stuff to tidy up in our nursery, as well....need to figure out some storage options and I'd like my husband to install some shelving in the closet.
@cyndistar3: I hear ya on the whole needing to catch up on housework before finishing the baby prep work! We are in the saaame boat here.
I need to finish going through my wardrobe this weekend, so my husband can rearrange our bedroom to accommodate our rocker and bassinet. I'm not convinced that everything can fit in our bedroom, but he seems to think he's come up with a good solution. Buuuut, in order for him to try it out, I need to get my piles of clothes cleaned up and put away!! I've been slowly working through this project the past two weeks, and I'm hoping to finish this weekend.
I had a doctor appointment yesterday...I always feel like it's so rushed! I had the GBS test (fun, fun) and requested a cervical check. My doctor seemed surprised that I wanted it done since at this point they wouldn't try to slow things down if I were to go into labor. I've been feeling so much pressure being back at work, though, so I wanted to know how much I'd progressed in two weeks. Surprisingly, he said I wasn't much more than about 1cm dilated. So I guess that's a good thing and means the progesterone is doing its job. I did decide that I will begin my maternity leave a week earlier than I originally planned, so Friday is my last day of work. I'm so exhausted by the time I get home from work that I can't get anything done at home, and it's totally stressing me out, so I think I am making the right decision. It's hard to let go of my class, but it's time.

@bunnylovesbear: He is 16 months old. I didn't think climbing would be a problem because he isn't walking yet and is generally scared of going down steps...but this morning I took a little too long going to the bathroom and getting dressed after I heard him wake up, and when I went in there he had indeed climbed out of bed and was pulling books off his bookshelf! So I guess he can climb out when properly motivated, but so far it seems like it's not going to be an issue as long as he's tired enough when I put him down. If he does start climbing out then we'll get to begin the fun-ness of putting him back in bed over and over...but fingers crossed that doesn't happen! I did put up a mesh rail so he can't roll out in his sleep, and until I stop being so nervous about it there's lots of pillows surrounding his bed as well.
My nursery's closet is a nightmare! Oh well. He has a huge dresser, we need the closet space more than he does at the moment, haha! Congrats on being so close to your last day of work - it was a big relief for me last time when I was able to start my leave a bit early.
I had my 36 week checkup today! My blood pressure was back to normal and the amount of protein in my urine was down, so that's good - we'd had fears of preeclampsia. My cervix is soft but still totally closed, which was a bit of a bummer. I'm pretty over the waiting and the end of pregnancy pains (which seem to be way worse this time around), so I went ahead and gave the go ahead for them to schedule a repeat c-section between 38 and 39 weeks, I'll know the date soon. But if my cervix is more favorable by then I will have the option of changing is from a RCS to an induction, which would be nice. Or maybe I'll just go into labor on my own before then! Seems unlikely, but that would be nice. They also did the GBS test, which was no big deal compared to the cervical check (I freaking hate them!) so we'll see what the results of that are.

@bunnylovesbear: Rockers take up SO MUCH SPACE... we got one for the living room and I couldn't believe the footprint for it. What kind of bassinet are you using? I just got a pack n play with bassinet and changer on it; I'm hoping that's enough!
@wonderstruck: How exciting to potentially know when you will be giving birth! I keep telling telling myself that these last two weeks will go by before I know it, but I just want the waiting to be over! I HATE not knowing what to expect! I keep looking for signs in everything that I do because mayyyyyybe it might be labor! but it isn't

@mrskoloa: Yes, I will be so excited to have an end date! I feel like I'm more jaded this time around...last time, everything made me feel like I was in labor. This time it's just like, "Nope, he's just beating up my cervix/those are BH/gas pains/whatever again. Means nothing. Sigh."
kiwi / 600 posts
@mrskoloa: Our bassinet looks something like this one: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=34799136&cp=2255957.2273443.2256245.2256271&parentPage=family
We are reusing the bassinet we used with our son a couple years ago. If I remember correctly, he slept in that for the first two months or so of his life. I'm pretty sure we made the switch to his crib in his nursery sometime in his 3rd month when he was able to sleep through the night a bit better (midnight - 6am). We have a pack n play with changing table that we set up in our living room with our son...it was convenient having a changing station on our first floor (bedrooms are upstairs) but I'm not sure that we will use it again. I remember it just becoming a storage container more than anything else! Lol.
@wonderstruck: Wow...16 months. Impressive!! Our nursery closet is a bit of a mess, as well. It's full of baby stuff, but needs to be reorganized big time because we're planning to use it to store the majority of the new baby's clothes. We aren't buying a new dresser, so we have minimal drawer space for this one. Since we don't know if it's a boy or girl yet, we really don't have any clothes for it yet, so I'm not in panic mode over baby clothes storage just yet. I'm planning to have my husband pull out the box of newborn clothes in our attic next week, so I can sort through for the gender neutral stuff I saved. I'm secretly hoping for a girl, so we can just buy all new clothes once this baby is born, so I won't have to dig through all the clothes I have saved in the attic. While it will be a major money-saver, it seems like a very daunting task.
Well, I need to head to bed. It's midnight and I need to be up for work in the morning. Chat more later!!

I went shopping for stuff to put in the hospital bag, so that's something! I ended up getting a super soft sleep shirt/night gown to wear in the hospital that was on sale, but it's long sleeved. I don't usually wear anything with sleeves to bed, if I wear anything at all, but this one is actually really light! I think I'm going to get a couple more for around the house tomorrow I also got a super soft robe. I hope I don't ruin it.
How is everyone feeling? Baby was super active all night while I was at work, it was nuts. Since I only got about 3 hours of sleep today before having to get up and do errands I was exhausted and was having lots of BH. I'm going to be buying some raspberry leaf tea or capsules to strengthen my uterus after I talk to my OB tomorrow to get the approval.
When did you guys start your cervical checks? I'm 35 weeks so I'm not sure if he starts that this week or next.

Hey everyone! I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted. I've been reading often but neve seem to get around to posting! Only 1 week and 4 days left until my due date. I'm definitely getting anxious. I can't believe he could be here any day. Is anyone else super anxious about the birth? Don't get me wrong I'm excited to meet him, but I'm so terrified of the labour and delivery. What if I can't handle it? I don't have much family support other than my husband and it's definitely starting to freak me out.

@Mrs.Panda: my first cervical check was at the end of August, but I requested it to be sure I could return to work as planned. Then it was checked again 9/3 and 9/15. I have another appointment today, but I doubt my doc will check. I had to ask him to check last week...I'm super curious how things are progressing now that I stopped my progesterone suppositories, so I'll prob ask him to check again today.
So I have some pretty exciting news...my sister went into labor last night!! Her due date was 10/5. We just (finally!) had her baby shower yesterday and her water broke at like 11:30 last night. No baby yet, but I'm super excited to go meet my new niece later today!! This makes everything soooo much more real for me....really sent the message home that this baby could come any day now!! I made a TO DO list and told my husband that we need to go into cleaning/organizing overdrive this week!!

@Mrs.Panda: Sounds like you found some nice comfy stuff! I need to find a robe as mine are all fleecy and I think too warm for this time of year still. I keep wavering about the RRL tea but haven't bought any yet. I should do that this week.
@Mirage: So exciting! I'm surprisingly calm about the whole labor/delivery thing....probably because I've already gone through it once and it honestly wasn't too bad Not to say it was easy, but I actually felt pretty good afterwards, all things considered.
@bunnylovesbear: So exciting about your sister!! She went quite early for her first baby! And right after her shower-good timing! Let us know how your appointment goes today! I will start having the cervical checks at my 38w appointment on Weds. I didn't have them at all with DS, but my OB wants to do them this time which is okay with me.
My mom threw me a "sprinkle" on Saturday and it was really sweet. We received tons of cute girl clothes and lots of yummy freezer meals for later. I over did it though and had tons of BH all day on Sat, and even into Sunday. I've had a few strong real contractions this morning, but nothing time-able or consistent. I keep wondering if I will go early, but doubt it. We put up the artwork in the nursery (though we still need more) and I am so happy to have it done! DS loves going in her room with me and sitting on the window seats. It's really sweet.

@Mrs.Panda: I've also bought a really soft long tshirt for the hospital, it's so so soft and cosy that its taken all my might not to wear it already! I'm a little sad that it will most likely be ruined with giving birth in it. I've been taking raspberry leaf tablets and tea since 34 weeks, be warned they might up your BH, mine were severe for a few weeks but have calmed down. As I'm in the UK we don't get any cervical check until we are officially in labour or 41 weeks.
@Mirage: welcome back! I've got 1 week and 1 day until due date, I go between bring excited and being terrified. I recently started to hang out with a group of 8 mums, 6 already recently had their babies and yesterday mum 7 had her LO so I'm the last one. She won't tell any of us her birth story until after I've had my baby as I think it was pretty horrifying, this has made me very nervous, but since there is no choice in the matter to give birth, I'm trying to stay calm!
@bunnylovesbear: how exciting! That's lovely your due dates are so close! Do you live near to each other for the cousins to grow up together?
@bushelandapeck: today has also been my first day where I felt definite real contractions, but after a while they keep fading away so haven't come to anything.
I am nesting something ridiculous, I have been scrubbing the oven, defrosting the freezer and bleaching the bathroom to my hearts content!

@Mrs tartan: That's nice of your mom friend to wait until you've had your baby to tell her story, especially if it's not a positive one. You certainly don't need to be any more anxious about the process! The nesting sounds positive! I have only had waves of nesting over the past couple of weekends, but nothing like you are describing! Hopefully it means things are happening

@bushelandapeck: Yes...I thought for sure she'd go after me! I can't wait to go visit tonight after my appointment. Your "sprinkle" sounds great. I wish I had people dropping off prepared meals for after the baby is born! That will definitely come in handy. Oh and I found a really comfy, light-weight robe at Target. I think this is the link to the one I bought: http://www.target.com/p/gilligan-o-malley-women-s-robe-assorted-colors/-/A-14887805#prodSlot=medium_1_9&term=robe
@Mrs tartan: We both live in MA, but she's a good 45 mins away. The kids will definitely be able to grow up together, though. I do wish she lived closer to home. I'm about 20 mins north of Boston, and she's on the other side of the city, so it's a long commute.
I'm also in turbo nesting mode. Heck, I started my maternity leave a week early bc I was worried I didn't have the time/energy for nesting after work! Lol. This morning I was climbing under the couch in my son's room collecting all his matchbox cars that were hidden under there...found 13 of them!! Not sure why that was something I NEEDED to do today, but it was! Lol. I also put away all his laundry and changed his sheets. I'm about to throw in a load of sheets (mine too) and then hop in the shower once he goes down for a nap. He goes to day care tomorrow, so I'll be able to get more accomplished - like finish organizing my clothes AND the dreaded nursery closet!!

You ladies sound so on top of everything. I guess I'm not nesting yet because I have not had any sort of urge to clean or organize. I think after work and school I am just tapped out. @bunnylovesbear: I saw an even softer one but it had no pockets, I love that this one has pockets!
Today is my 36 week appointment which is supposed to be like an hour long! We are doing the GPS test today, I'm supposed to start some birth prep uterine toner thing and talk about my birth plan!!! I'm so excited that I get to at least try to have a birth plan this time since last time there just wasn't much hope at this time for her to turn around.

@cyndistar3: Next week is my 36 week appointment too but I don't think it's particularly long. I did my GBS yesterday at my 35 week appointment. Haven't even talked about a birth plan yet, though I don't intend on having one. I am just going to say epidural pretty much. She keeps flipping transverse so I'm thinking she is going to be a stubborn one. Otherwise, what happens will happen. I think I got the robe you are talking about, the super soft one without pockets. I'm so looking forward to wearing it!
@Mrs tartan: Yeah I am weak and ended up wearing mine in the house lol... I may or may not be wearing it right now. I'm going to Target today and am going to pick up a couple more because they are on sale and sooo comfy. I will be sure to put one in the bag! I don't intend to wear it while giving birth because the long sleeves would likely interfere with the IV and I don't want to ruin it. I am not uncomfortable in hospital gowns, though.

@cyndistar3: Wow...an hour long appointment?! Other than when I had ultrasounds, I don't think I ever had an appointment that long! When I went in yesterday, I was in and out in 10 mins! We haven't talked much about a birth plan, either. I guess when it's a scheduled c-section, there's really not much to talk about. We did discuss skin-to-skin post surgery, and I said I would like to be able to do that. We also talked about getting my tubes tied...which I've decided to do. We know this is our last child and it only extends the surgery by about 10 mins, so I think the piece of mind no accidental pregnancies will be a positive thing for us down the road.
No real news to share from yesterday's appointment, though. We met with the nurse practitioner because my doc is swamped; he has LOTS of October Mommas. I left the urine sample, was weighed, had my blood pressure checked, listened to the heartbeat (130-140bpm), and got a vaccination (whooping cough). No internal exam, which was fine with me. Now that I'm off the progesterone AND out of work, I don't see the point in checking anymore.
So I had big plans of cleaning/organizing today while my son was at school, but I am having the hardest time getting myself motivated! I'm exhausted for some reason. I set a goal of relaxing til 10am, but here we are at 10:50 and I'm still on the couch. Oops. Johnny was a big of a monster this morning during breakfast, so that stressed me out. I need to pick him up at 2:30, so I need to get motivated!

@bunnylovesbear: I got the tdap last week and the shot was fine but the after effects were awful. It swelled up and it hurt to move my arm. Luckily it only lasted about 3-4 days but dang! Hopefully yours doesn't react as badly. Ice and heat packs for sure. I thought I'd just tough it out but I broke down about 2 or so days in and it really made a difference. I also had grand plans to clean and get stuff done but I'm laying in bed... didn't sleep at all last night because I couldn't breathe! And my hips are killing me I hope I'm not this whiny of a baby the next 5 weeks.

@Mrs.Panda: I'm technically not 36 weeks until Thursday or Sunday depending on who you ask, my appointment dates seem to have gotten messed up. Hopefully she decides to settle into position eventually, but at least she does go head down right?
@bunnylovesbear: My appointments are usually just 15-20 minutes just because we talk a lot about random stuff lol... this one is extra long because we have to do the GPS test, sign different consent forms, pick which room I want and since pain meds are not an option there, talk about tub use, the positions I might want to try, what I want them to make me to eat after the baby is born and all that fun jazz

@Mrs.Panda: so far my arm is just a little sore...it kicked in an hr or two after my appointment. I'm hoping it doesn't get any worse. Right now, it's not super noticeable, just slightly annoying. Haha
Well, I'm just about done with the nursery. I gathered a couple things I need my husband to hang on the wall when he gets home from work. I also have boxes of stuff for him to bring up to the attic. The more I organize, the more I'm hoping for a girl. I'd love to just start over with all the clothes. Haha. I didn't always do the greatest job keeping the boxes of clothes organized by size/season, and besides...if it's a boy, I think the seasons will be slightly off anyways. Johnny was born in the summer and this baby will be born at least 2 months later in the fall.

@bunnylovesbear: No, I had such a bad experience with my spinal block with #2 that I would gladly take the first experience of 48 hours of back labor over that any day

@cyndistar3: that's so cool! If my insurance would cover it and I didn't have this nagging feeling that a section is in my future (don't know why) I would consider that option. Seems much more peaceful. And I hear that if you have back problems then back labor is very common. I have a few herniated discs and have been having loads of back pain today, so I'm thinking that's in my future as well. As long as I'm prepared I guess? Does it feel like when you throw it out?
@bunnylovesbear: what do you FEEL it is? Lol
