@runnerd: My husband's coming with me. I was told I would have bloodwork and an ultrasound at our appointment. I'll be 6 weeks and 3 days so I was told there was no way we'll hear the heartbeat. I'm really hoping to hear it before 2/23 becasue my whole family is getting together that weekend and we want to announce!

@char54: hahahaha... Umm I had the same thought about BM this morning

@jetsa: you can't hear a heartbeat at that time but you can see it if given an ultrasound. Some ob's won't do an ultrasound that early though or don't have the machine in their office.

@runnerd: my DH is going and will try to make all appointments regardless, but we get an ultrasound at this one so he definitely has to be there!

@marionberry: oooh that's so exciting! I doubt ill be getting one tomorrow as they usually have to be done at the hospital here. Never the less I'm excited to have confirmation that I haven't been dreaming double lines and I am pregnant!!

  5. jetsa

    grapefruit / 4663 posts

@marionberry: I thought I had read that somewhere. I know I'll get an ultrasound because I have to go to the main office (about 45 mins from home) for my appt and the nurse told me thats the reason why!

So is seeing the heartbeat as good of a sign as hearing it? I know I read somewhere that the chance of M/C goes down to 3% after hearing the heartbeat and so thats what we are waiting on to announce.

EDIT: Per this after seeing the heartbeat the odds go down to 5% that you'll miscarry.

    @maplemoose: Thank you for that!
@jetsa: Yes, my understanding is once they can see it (and they end up counting the heart rate too) that it's just as good as hearing it. Once you have that confirmation I'd certainly think you'd be safe to tell family.
@mrssquirreld: I hear you about confirmation! I almost wish you got to go in weekly to get your hCG numbers monitored to ensure all was well. It would definitely calm me down, lol. Yay for getting official confirmation!

Still no morning sickness for me. Wondering if it's around the corner or if I'm going to be one of those people who doesn't get any. My mom said she didn't get any with me. I'm so sorry for those who are enduring it already! But at least what a great confirmation your baby is in there and thriving.

Good Monday everyone! Scheduled my first appointment for 2/13 - excited to go - should have an ultrasound - will be great to see the little bean.
Is anyone else waiting until 12 weeks to tell people?
Already tired of making excuses about not drinking or pretending to have a drink.

  13. jetsa

    grapefruit / 4663 posts

@Joanlindsay: We were intending on it but with the chance of m/c down to 5% after seeing the heartbeat we'll probably tell everyone but our jobs sooner rather than later. I thought it was closer to 20% and so going down to 5% makes us feel confident enough. This chart shows what the miscarriage percentage is week by week. http://www.pregnancycharts.org/miscarriage.php I'll be so glad to stop making excuses about drinking

@jetsa: Thanks for updating the list and thanks even more for the mc info. According to that as of Wednesday I'm already at 5% and then less once we hear the heartbeat on the following Monday. You're really helping lessen my worries.

@joanlindsey: We already told immediate family and after seeing the heartbeat will tell the rest of our family and close friends. We won't announce to the world though until about 12 weeks or more I'd think.

  16. jetsa

    grapefruit / 4663 posts

@marionberry: no problem! I solve my worries with research so I figured I might as well share. @Joanlindsay: I agree with marionberry we'll probably tell all family and our closest friends prior to 12 weeks and everyone else shortly after the 12 week mark. I realized my first response doesn't clearly state that. I will not be announcing on FB or twitter until 20 weeks if at all.

  17. MapleMoose

    grapefruit / 4213 posts

@runnerd: I took the first AM appointment so DH could come to the first appointment before we go to work.

@char54: That made me LOL!! It's funny the things we worry about.

@jetsa: That calms my nerves a lot. Thank you!

  18. Charm54

    cantaloupe / 6885 posts

@Joanlindsay: We told our immediate family this weekend and it feels so much more real now! I actually feel more relaxed - I have people to talk about it now with and they are so, so excited. We will hold off on telling the rest of our family (aunts/uncles/cousins etc) until after our 9 week appointment, then the rest of the world (friends, co-workers) after 12 weeks.

I don't know why but having my parents know makes me less worried about M/C. Maybe because it feels more real, maybe because I know if something awful happened I'd have my mom here in an instant?

  19. Charm54

    cantaloupe / 6885 posts

@runnerd: LOL I'm glad others have the same concern!!! My researching calmed my fears that you cannot,in fact, poop a baby out.

@jetsa - that chart is awesome - thank you!!! 3 more days until 5%

The books that I ordered to tell our parents came in today (1 day late, ugh) but one of the books in particular - The Gifts of Being Grand is just soooo sweet for future grandparents, FYI - I was tearing up reading it!

  20. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@char54: I agree with you. Telling made me feel better. And when I'm freaking out about the risk of mc I just keep hearing my mom say, "In our family babies stick. No one has ever miscarried. You have no reason to worry at all." And even though I know people can miscarry even if it hasn't happened in their families yet, it still calms my nerves a bit. And yes, I'm killing to get to Wednesday so that I can go down to 5%.

@marionberry: that's so funny!! My sister said the same thing to me about her and my mom being baby making people haha with 7 kids between them

@char54: telling parents made me feel better too!! And how quickly they dismissed my worried and said its all gonna be ok

  22. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@runnerd: I think honestly being on HB can make you worry way more than a normal person. Sometimes I need to take DH's advice and just stop thinking about what could go wrong and enjoy what is going right. Although as I said to him today, I still don't feel pregnant. I feel like every other day during my trials to get pregnant. I mean yes, I have symptoms, but I don't feel like a mom yet. I can't wait for when I do...probably when I hear that heartbeat for the first time.

@runnerd: My DH will be out of town for work next week, so he can't come to my first appt....and we actually just found out that he's going to be working out of town for the next 6 months (traveling back and forth), so who knows how many he'll be around for :-/. Oh well, better now than after the baby is here...!

@jetsa: Thanks for that link! I was thinking the odds of m/c were higher, so that's really comforting to see.

@Joanlindsay: I don't think we'll be able to get away with waiting until 12 weeks to tell. Most of our friends know that we were trying, so once they consistently see me turning down drinks, it's going to be obvious. I just definitely want to have seen/heard a heartbeat first. Also I work in Radiology, so my co-workers will know (or already do) very soon because my duties have to change while pregnant due to radiation exposure.

@char54: OMG I have totally worried about the same thing. We're crazy people

  25. mlm2934

    grapefruit / 4311 posts

@Joanlindsay: last night I acted all excited about trying the milkshakes at this burger and shake place instead of getting a beer like normally would. At least I wasn't the only one that didn't get a beer - but I always get drinks when out with friends so felt like I had to have an "excuse" haha

  26. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@mango.sprays: My DH works in radiology too (manages an outpatient radiology center amongst other things) so I know about the pregnancy protocols. What do you do in radiology and when will you notify them? The cool thing I know about in his office though, was that when you worked there the ultrasound techs often gave pregnant staff free ultrasounds to see what the baby looked like. Will you have a perk like that?

  27. mango.sprays

    apricot / 446 posts

@marionberry: Oh neat! I'm an x-ray tech, so many parts of my normal job are unsafe during pregnancy (surgery & any kind of fluoroscopy procedure). I haven't officially notified yet, but told the few people in charge of scheduling right away after my BFP, so I am already being kept out of those rotations. I'm planning on "going official" with my boss after my appointment next week if everything looks normal, and actually telling coworkers after we are able to see a heartbeat (hopefully that's next week too!)...though I know more and more of them are suspecting every day because I usually spend a lot of time in surgery.

Thanks for your answers. @marionberry I agree HB can make you feel a little over worried.

We waited til 12 weeks with our first and will with our second too. Partially to be in 2nd trimester but also because DH and I really liked having a secret together. Also my SIL is due right around my 12 weeks and I don't want to steal any of her spotlight.

Being on HB is nice to have all of you to share the fun with without letting the cat out of the bag. Thanks to all of you

I am wiiiippppeeddd out. DH is away on a business trip and I am really missing his TLC. I went for a walk after school, did groceries, and have been flopped on the couch ever since with my dog. I don't know if I even have the energy to make supper...might be a toast kind of night.

Oh man, this thread moves fast! I love it! Away for a few days and I missed so much!

    Welcome new September mamas!

@char54: I guffawed loudly when I read what you googled! People next to me thought I was crazy

Up until the last two days I hadn't really felt any symptoms other than cramping. BUT in the last 48 hours, I swear my breasts have doubled in size (no joke, already had to buy a new bra because my cups runneth over), I feel so full of air that I can imagine DH tying a string around my ankle and floating me down the sidewalk like a balloon, and the is-this-nausea-no-it's-gone-already waves have turned into oh-no-I'm-going-to-be-sick-in-public-how-embarrassing bouts.

Also, and it really must be due to the gassy-ness, I feel like I already look pregnant...I'm wondering how I'm going to make it to 12 weeks without telling people because unless the bloat goes away soon, I'm not going to be able to hide it for 6 more weeks! Anyone else feeling like they're starting to show/have a noticeable pooch already?

  31. jetsa

    grapefruit / 4663 posts

@MamaMagpie: Yes the bloat is crazy. I feel like my stomach which has always had a pooch is sticking out way more than normal. I did take a 5 week picture on Sunday though and I don't feel like its as noticeable as I feel like it is. I'm soo sorry about your morning sickness!

  32. duckduckkristen

    clementine / 959 posts

@MamaMagpie: with both my pregnancies I had some serious bloat in the beginning but it went away around 6 or 7 weeks. This time I'm actually losing a little weight now because its been hard keeping up with all the eating I have to do while BFing and pregnant and feeling nauseous!

We usually wait until we see a heartbeat before we tell people. Last time that was at 8 weeks and this time 6. But even then, we just tell immediate family. Last time we told everyone else at 11 weeks, but this time we'll tell people after my 8 week ultrasound this Friday.

I am so exhausted and having serious food aversions. LO not sleeping well is adding to the exhaustion!

Ladies what are you eating for breakfast? I currently eat a piece of fruit at 7 and another around 9:30 and a 1/4 cup of milk in my coffee but its not cutting it. I'm starving already and craving carbs I just wonder if its because I'm not having any protein in the AM or?

  34. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

Is anyone else not sleeping well? For the past week or so I just toss and turn. It's super annoying.

@mamamagpie: I'd love the boob issue but not the morning sickness. So sorry it hit you so fast. I definitely feel my normal belly pooch looks bigger than normal already.

@jetsa: I usually have a fruit bar and then snack on crackers if I'm hungry again before lunch. I've heard greek yogurt is great for quenching hunger with protein.

  35. futuremama

    clementine / 854 posts

@marionberry: I'm sleeping terribly. I think all of the anxiety is really getting to me. I know it's not good for me or the baby, but until I see that heartbeat, I just don't think I'll be able to relax. I keep having dreams (nightmares) that I've lost the baby. The lack of sleep is really starting to wear on me. I'm very emotional when I'm not rested. Then, since I'm emotional, I start to worry more. Vicious cycle.

@jetsa: I usually have a whole grain waffle (or toast) with some peanut butter and banana on top (sometimes with a little honey). Then, my mid-morning snack is a Greek yogurt.

  36. mlm2934

    grapefruit / 4311 posts

@marionberry: yep! The past two morning I have gotten up at 6am and been to work by 7:30am compared to usually sleeping until nearly 7:30 and getting to work around 8:45.

And that whole thing about "vivid" dreams? I've been having straight up nightmares.. Not sure if that's the same but they are def vivid

@jetsa: yea I hear ya on the starving, lately I've been having weird breakfast of apricot, kiwi, and decaf coffee to help with my constipation haha

@duckduckkristen: that's exciting that you already got to hear the heartbeat! How did you get an appt that early?!

@MamaMagpie: haha! I've been wondering if my stomach was this big looking a week ago... I know I have gained a few extra pounds past few months but damn!

@marionberry: I've been having trouble sleeping as well. I was up at 12, 3, and 5 last night. Its very annoying. And the smell of coffee makes my stomach turn so mornings are a struggle.

@jetsa: Unfortunately, I've been eating bagels for the last few days. Carbs seem to be the only thing that keep the nausea away in the morning. I'm jealous you can still stomach fruit in the AM!

  38. MamaMagpie

    persimmon / 1436 posts

@futuremama: @mationberry: @runnerd: I'm so sorry you're not sleeping well and having nightmares! I've been ok in that area (so far) but I did have some vivid dreams during my TWW

Ok, glad I'm not the only one experiencing bloat!
@jetsa: that's a good idea, to take a picture, maybe it will ease my mind. All of my clothes fit, so that's what I'm telling myself now to help me not worry so much about people guessing if they look at me!

Oh, and @jetsa: protein! You should try, try, try to get at least 10 grams of protein in in the morning -- it will help you stay fuller longer. Also, eating small meals balanced with protein, fiber and carbs every few hours will help keep your blood sugar stable and keep the queasiness away (I think it's the ONLY reason I haven't actually thrown up in public yet!). Small meals = something like a cup of Greek yogurt, a piece of whole rain toast, and a high-fiber fruit like an apple. I went to a nutritionist last year and she changed my life!
