@marionberry: Nope my normal clothes still fit, although some of my work pants are getting tight at the end of the day. My mom has bought me some I think, I'm supposed to see her next weekend so I'll get them then. I haven't bought anything yet though.

@marionberry: I'm planning on going maternity clothe shopping this weekend - but more like stretchy comfy leggings, tunics, and dresses.
So I was talking to a coworker today and she asked me if we were thinking about having kids anytime soon, to which I gave my usual response from when we weren't of "ehhhh, sommmmmeday. Not quite there" it felt so wrong to say that with a little baby in me, but spit it out my mouth before I could stop! can't wait to be in the open!
pomelo / 5041 posts
@runnerd: That's funny. Your coworker is definitely going to know you lied soon, lol. I use to do that too, in the early pregnancy days, but now I think I'd just tell them. So tired of keeping the secret. And so excited for our baby!
I think I'm going maternity clothes shopping the weekend after next, only because I'm in Seattle for a work conference this weekend. We have a Motherhood Maternity outlet near my work that I really need to visit.

@runnerd: I haven't heard of that book, but I'm going to buy it! John Gottman is the marriage guru. I read a book of his in college when taking a marriage and family relationships class. I learned so much from him! This book looks great!

@runnerd: Is it bad that I'm like, my last worry is our marriage, bring on the books about babies sleeping through the night!

I'm desperate for a bump, too! Still fitting into all of my clothes, even work pants that were a little right on me post-holiday season fit normally again. I called the doctor today to ask if it was ok that I've lost weight, and she said it was normal considering the m/s and I wasn't exactly underweight pre-pregnancy (at all)! I never thought I'd be disappointed to not be gaining weight! I keep looking down at my stomach and saying "show yourself, baby!"
Welcome @illumina!
Congrats on what must've been such exciting appointments @nblchicago and @joanlindsay! My next appointment is in two weeks and I can.not.wait. Gah!

I'm kind of freaking out right now...feeling a lot of pressure and crampy. I'm 11 weeks tomorrow...I'm trying to tell myself it's just my uterus stretching. No bleeding, so I know that's "good". I'm sure tomorrow I will feel silly, but right now I'm really nervous

Oh ladies, I've been so MIA, sorry! Between exhaustion, nausea, school, financial aid, fighting with the in-laws, and taking care of my daughter, I think I reached my limit. I'm sorry, know that I've totally been thread stalking though and rooting for you all from my hazy, nauseous state.
Our appointment at ~10 weeks went well, we saw the baby moving and saw the heart thumping away. Like all of you, I'm anxious for my stomach to stop looking fat and start looking pregnant so that I'm out of the awkward "Pregnant? Or just fat?" stage. It's never a fun place to be for the ol' self-confidence.
I had my parents send up my stored maternity clothes, and my jeans that I invested in last time are WAY too big because I started my last pregnancy over 20lbs heavier than I am now. So, yay for losing weight! Boo for having to buy expensive pieces of clothing again! Hopefully they'll fit in the 3rd tri or something. I splurged and bought some maternity leggings and a tunic from Boden today to make me feel a little better about my body. Hopefully it will be a good investment!
@runnerd: Good for you for thinking ahead about your marriage after baby. Gottman is awesome.
@marionberry: Hey, sleep makes for a happy marriage too.
@MamaMagpie: I sincerely hope that you do wake up tomorrow feeling silly and that everything is just fine. I know that you know that cramping and pinching and pulling are totally normal, but it probably doesn't do much to calm your nerves. I'm sorry! If you're super stressed, you could always try to get in to see your OB tomorrow.

@illumina: Welcome! Nice to have a fellow mama in the UK on this thread! Roughly whereabouts are you? I'm in Suffolk.
@marionberry: Yep, maternity sweater and leggings purchased at the weekend - the sweater is doing a great job of hiding the pooch for the time being, without looking like maternity-wear. The leggings will come in handy in the next few weeks I think... I'm already getting pretty uncomfortable with anything round my waist - been holding my jeans together with a hair-tie for about 3 weeks now! haha.
We're slowly starting to go public as we see family and friends now, its been lovely seeing people's reactions - my sister was totally speechless (which is quite a sight!)... hehehe.
pomelo / 5469 posts
@evenstar982: You may live fairly close to me then, I live in Cambridgeshire half way between Cambridge and Haverhill, so the Suffolk border is pretty close!
I didn't realise you are from the UK! Can I ask where you've shopped for maternity wear? I haven't got a clue where to start so haven't got anything apart from making sure any new clothes purchases have sufficient room to grow over the next few months!
I'm not showing yet and feel like a bit of a fraud looking at anything baby related in shops, to be honest DH and I went to a department store at the weekend to have a first look at car seats, travel systems etc. just to see what's out there and get an idea of price and I was surrounded by expectant parents who were obviously pregnant. I know it's silly but I feel like people are looking at me like I'm just buying a gift for someone else!
@MamaMagpie I am around 10wks and the last 2 days I have felt significantly more cramping around my lower back. It doesn't hurt any more than usual, just seems more of it. I do worry a little, but manage to convince myself it's probably normal.
apricot / 284 posts
@illumina: wow, small world - I am probably less than an hour away from you then, right over towards the suffolk coast!
As for Maternity-wear... sadly the UK highstreet is a bit of a loss as far as I can tell, most places don't stock maternity in store so you have to go online, but I got my bits from H&M, and I have my eye on a few bits in Mothercare and JoJo Maman Bebe (there's a store in Bury St Edmunds which is probably halfway between you and me!).
If you don't mind my asking, are you a Brit, or are you based in the UK with SO in the Military? (I only ask out of curiosity as there are a lot of military families around Cambridge...). I'm British but DH is American.
Totally hear you on feeling like looking like you must be gift-shopping for somebody else when other more obviously pregnant ladies are around... I have been using that as a good excuse though in case anyone sees me baby-shopping and I've not been ready to confess! haha.
pomelo / 5469 posts
@evenstar982: Definitely a small world! I know what you mean about the high street shops! I used to live in Bath and go shopping in Bristol a lot and the larger stores there, like TopShop did have maternity sections, but Cambridge shops are tiny. I wear a lot of leggings, baggy jumpers and stuff anyway so I'm kind of in denial that I'll need any maternity clothes for a long time! Though I have 3 weddings to attend this summer, 2 where I'll be around 7mths and another a week before my due date! I'm already getting nervous about what I'm going to wear!
I'm English and DH is Welsh, so both Brits We moved over this way towards the end of last year for DH's work, but are planning to move back West, closer to family and friends this summer before the baby arrives.
apricot / 284 posts
@illumina: Cambridge is ok for shopping - better than Ipswich which is my nearest option! But Bath is brilliant, I bet you miss that! I'm a leggings and tunic-top kind of girl too, so also hoping to be able to get into the summer before I have to buy too much. Got two weddings in April though so I guess I might need at least one new outfit to fit a 20 week belly for those
pomelo / 5469 posts
@evenstar982: I do miss it there, though we're heading back this weekend for a couple of days, so will look forward to some shopping! If I remember, they have a Jojo Maman Bebe there too.
Let me know where you get a wedding outfit from if you buy something new!
As you're a few weeks ahead of me, have you had your 12wk scan yet? I find it strange how pre-natal care differs here from the US in that the midwife wasn't interested in seeing me until I was at least 8wks.
apricot / 284 posts
@illumina: I had my 12 week scan last week at 10+6 (turned out my dates were a week out) and have another booked now for 12+6 (next weds) to do the nuchal screen and bloodwork.
It surprised me too how the midwife wasn't interested until at least 8 weeks - but I think that's actually quite standard, there are a lot of ladies around the HB boards who are being monitored more closely due to IUI's etc so I think that gives the impression that you get seen earlier on in the States, though I'm not sure that's really the case... any US ladies care to comment?
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@evenstar982: @illumina: I was first seen at 6+3 but I think that is my doctors office because I have friends that weren't seen until 8 for paperwork and then a us at 12. We won't get another us until 20 weeks, just the doppler next week (11+4) unless they can't find the hb.
Also my newest symptom is that if I stand up too quickly I get light-headed and I just need to stop a minute so that I feel stable. I asked the dr about it last week and he said it was just my body getting used to the extra blood flow but its crazy.
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@jetsa: I've been having the light headed thing too! Also, I read this morning and thought I'd pass along.. Of course I wasn't planning on marathon running, but thought there were good points about adjusting to making decisions for baby and not just all about you...
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@runnerd: While a good post and I've definitely slowed down I don't know that I completely agree with her. I'm not looking to PR but my midwife was not concerned at all when I asked her, she said you were training during the TWW why wouldn't you continue? She ok-d both my halves and said eventually my body would tell me to slow down and I need to listen at that point. I ran-walked my last half and intend to do that on my next one (Jack Daniels, April 6th). The relay though I intend to give it my pregnant all, I have a team depending on me and its a total of 8.8 miles over 3 legs so its not crazy long. My husband has been reminding me to take it easier because of the bean and is actually training way harder than normal so that as a team we'll be at the same speed as last year so that I don't feel any concern to push myself too hard. And this turned into a novel, sorry lol.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@runnerd: @jetsa: I read this yesterday too, and while I agree that we should scale back a bit, I didn't really like the overall tone of article. I haven't been running for the past three weeks (I'm just too tired), but I have been exercising and making modifications as needed.
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@jetsa: yea I'm on the same page as you! I totally would still be doing half's... Just not bc I lost too much endurance having to take a month off.. So I plan to only work back up to 10k's. the thing I took away the most from the article is I struggle with getting down on myself bc I am super competitive with myself and like to train and get faster etc. I feel like I lost all of that and I've been pretty down about that. So I've had to work on my mindset being that any running I do is a joy and making me healthier for baby, not just about how competitive I can be.
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@jetsa: wait what? Do you mean oak barrel half in Lynchburg? Where do you live lol? If that's the one you mean, I did that race last year and love love loved it!!!! I had planned to do it this year, but didn't register since I haven't been able to run and will be undertrained
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@evansjamie: Yes exactly this is what I was trying to say.
@runnerd: Yes definitely this, "So I've had to work on my mindset being that any running I do is a joy and making me healthier for baby, not just about how competitive I can be." Yes the Oak Barrel Half we signed up awhile ago and its 2 weeks before our relay so I think I have my husband convinced to take it super slow with me (the max time is 4 hours so that's not a concern). That's too bad I would've loved to meet you, like I said we are taking it super slow if you decide you want to! I'm about 4.5 hours northwest of lynchburg, we are staying in Shelbyville friday night
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@jetsa: awesome!!! Man now I want to run it and meet you! I'm about 1.5 north of there. Too bad it's sold out!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@runnerd: Lol. That is too bad, I think I read something about releasing some tickets closer to race day
I called a daycare center and apparently in my area waiting lists are uncommon, they told me to call at birth lol.

I am so thinking I will have to do some maternity clothes shopping ASAP. I was packing for mexico tonight and trying on my summer clothes was SERIOUSLY depressing. If it was a baby bump I would be totally pumped - but I'm thinking it's still just bloat/ice-cream! lol. A week of guacamole and tacos probably won't help. That being said I am super pumped for our trip - DH and I love to travel and it's probably our last trip alone for a long, long while!
My students (7 years old) found out I was pregnant today. I was hoping to hold off until I was starting to show but with it being public knowledge I knew it was only a matter of time before one of them heard from their parents and asked me about it. Anyway they were SUPER excited - one little girl started crying tears of happiness!
My favorite comments were: "It's going to HURT when that baby comes out. You'll probably have to go to the doctor's office." "You're only going to take 2 days off with the baby right and then come back with us?" "Can you make sure it's a boy like me?"

@char54: that is so darned cute!
So I could not sleep at all last night due to the cramping, and it continued for most of the day today. I called my OB twice (had to hold myself back from a third call) and they assured me if there was no spotting, all was ok. I know I'm being a crazy pregnant lady, I do, but I'm stressing out nonetheless. And when I sneeze or move too fast, I get sharp pulling muscle-cramp pains...like what round ligament pain seems to be described as. But isn't that only supposed to happen much later? I'm losing my marbles...
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@char54: so sweet that you have a whole little group of people to be excited for you!
@MamaMagpie: it's ok - pregnancy makes us all crazy!! It's hard to not worry in between appts but like dr said, sure it's all normal pains.
I've been getting those sharp pains when I stand up, stretching backward too fast... I figure it has to do with some sort of stretching down there.
apricot / 319 posts
@MamaMagpie: I think it's normal to have round ligament pain throughout your pregnancy...things are stretching and making space. So stressful though. Since you're local, I love my chiropractor Kenda at Awaken Chiropractic, she does a lot of work on pregnant gals and babies. She's been a great resource for me and my daughter. Anyway, she suggested that I start taking magnesium supplements in addition to the prenatal to help with the muscle aches.
pomelo / 5469 posts
@char54: Hope you have a great trip! I am most jealous about the food, it is almost impossible to get good Mexican food over here
@MamaMagpie @runnerd I get exactly the same sharp pains if I get up too quick, they only last a few seconds though and feel like I've pulled a muscle.

What do you guys do in the situation where you would usually go for a drink with a friend(s) but now for obvious reasons you can't drink? I've already used the 'I'm driving' excuse a couple of times and this weekend some of DH's friends have invited us over to theirs for a drink (we can walk there) and I'm hanging out with another friend on Sunday when I won't need to drive there either.
We haven't even told our families yet, so whilst I'm almost ok with telling people at this stage, it doesn't seem right that friends would know first.
Help!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@illumina: antibiotics is usually a good excuse...no one questions it and you're usually on them for 10 days which might buy you the time you need!
pomelo / 5469 posts
@char54: That's a good idea. I had to take them for an ear infection last year and always get terrible ear infections, so it's a plausible reason.
I just worry that when I do announce next month everyone will know that I lied. Like a few weeks ago, I went to visit a close friend who has 2 sons. She asked me if we were thinking of having children soon and I panicked and said no! Now she's definitely going to know I lied!
grapefruit / 4311 posts
@illumina: haha! I did the same panic and lie thing earlier this week. it's ok, hiding pregnancy early on is a lie people understand and expect
pomelo / 5041 posts
@MamaMagpie: I've had cramping off and on the whole pregnancy. Had some last night in fact so I'm sure everything is fine. I also started getting round ligament pain pretty early, which is totally normal too! Try to stay positive. No blood means happy baby right now.
Afm, I'm super excited for my first real OB appointment today!
cherry / 199 posts
@illumina I am a definite drinker....and living in NYC means that driving is never an excuse. So I basically wound up telling people as soon as I was in a situation where we were at a bar and I wasn't drinking.
grape / 98 posts
@illumina I've used quitea few excuses - cold medicine, trying to lose weight, right now I'm telling people I have it up for lent - which I've done in my non PG past.
Sometimes if you can get to the restaurant/bar early just confide to the waitress and she will make you a virgin something and not tell. I think someone on here mentioned they just carry a drink around like at a friends house and then occasionally switch with their hubby so it looks like they are drinking.
Don't worry about the lying I've had friends ask if I was PG and I straight up lied but they've done the same to me - everyone will just be excited and most of them will say, "I knew it!"
pomelo / 5469 posts
@Joanlindsay: LENT!!!! Recently I haven't been giving anything up for Lent so I'd kind of forgotten about it. That's such a good idea.
Would you say something to them after ordering your drink though, explaining why or just wait and see if they ask?

@char54: Your students sound so sweet, how fun! You are going to have such a great time on your vacation, I'm very jealous!
