    @marionberry: How long did it take her to confirm the gender? Was it instant and was she 100% sure?

    @marionberry: How sweet! Those pictures are great!

    @marionberry: congrats on your little boy!

    I am also curious about how the sonographer can tell what gender / how easily they can tell... since we are TG whenever I look at U/S pics I just see a baby, I have no idea how they pick out whether it has girls parts or boy parts! (So hopefully at our next scan I won't accidentally 'see' and find out, but maybe I will just have to look away at that point). DH can't come to our next scan anyway so I could never find out without him there.

    @evenstar982: yea we are worried about this too. Both of our mothers are coming to the anatomy scan and they are dying to know the gender so I know they'll be looking even though we don't want to know. My mom even has a sonography degree although she didn't practice for long. We are pretty much planning on them both swearing its a ____ at the next appt and us being like we don't wan to know! The best case scenario would be if one thinks its a girl and the other thinks its a boy LOL.

    @evenstar982: @illumina: It was the first thing she noticed/looked for. It wasn't super apparent to us because it was a bad angle (usually the get a shot looking from the butt upward) but I've seen ultrasound videos on YouTube where it's super apparent. Just tell the sonographer as soon as you walk in that you don't want to know the sex and for her to make sure everyone closes their eyes when she checks. Then she'll probably avoid that area as much as possible afterward.

    @char54: I know what you mean about not knowing how ladies in the US handle so little mat. leave - in the UK we can get a year too (and I am planning to take it, plus some holiday owing so actually about 14 months off work in total!). I do worry about going back to work after such an extended break though... I find it hard enough to go back after 2 weeks holiday!

    @jetsa: My mum might come to my 20 week scan if her lunchbreak co-incides with my appointment (she works in the same hospital). She's a radiographer so I'm hoping she won't be able to read the scan and guess at the gender either!

    That said, DH's grandmother has a 4/4 record for correctly guessing the gender of her great-grandchildren; and she's just called "boy" on our LO, so now we have to wait and see if she's right!

    Anyone else have a relative with a freakish ability to predict gender?

    @marionberry: lol "butt upward" that just made me smile, so undignified! haha.

    @evenstar982: My MIL does the pencil test with like a crazy amount of accuracy and is dying to do it but I think my hubby has decided not to let her. She's seriously like 50 right, 3 wrong its crazy. Also I'm not showing much yet and I've had 5-6 friends call the baby a boy no one has said girl.

  9. illumina

    pomelo / 5469 posts

    @marionberry: thanks

    @jetsa: what's the pencil test?

  10. jetsa

    grapefruit / 4663 posts

    @illumina: from here: http://pencilpregnancytest.com/
    The pencil pregnancy test is used to determine the gender of unborn babies. By placing a needle on the end of a pencil eraser and then adding the string to the needle, you can create a do-it-yourself ultrasound – make sure to still get the ultrasound, but once you do, you will realize the pencil test was correct! We are not actually sure how it scientifically works but we believe that because everything is planned by God, he gave us this little tool to determine the gender of a child. The pencil pregnancy test even predicts miscarriages and abortions. God has a plan whether you like it or not. Here’s how it works:

    Stick the needle into the top of the pencil eraser – the pencil should be very sharp.
    Place a thread within the needle – two feet of thread should do fine…
    The device has been created.
    Place the woman’s wrist on a table – back of hand face down
    Holding the string with both of your hands, hover the threaded pencil over the wrist – remember, the back of the hand is face down and the palm of the hand is face up.
    The Prediction begins:
    With amazement, the end of the pencil (lead side) will begin to move. It will predict the sex of the child – IN ORDER!

    You can do this to women who have not yet had children or those that have already had children – it predicts…as well as tells the woman’s pregnancy history.

    The prediction will always start with a circle.

    Swaying from side-to-side = girl
    Swaying up-and-down – hand to elbow = boy
    Swaying diagonal = Twins! We think!!! Due to the overwhelming response, it seems the diagonal may be a break during “pencil thinking” rather than a twin prediction. We just don’t know! SO if you get a diagonal, don’t go out and buy two of everything, get the Ultrasound first!
    Large circle = miscarriage/abortion

    @illumina: She's crazy accurate we had friends who had a child 5 years after the other 2 and she swore she knew from doing the pencil test years before.

    ETA: I don't know if I believe her but everyone swears by her and we had friends that were like why would you let her do the pencil test if you don't want an ultrasound, so we decided against letting her do it. we don't want anyone thinking they know the gender

  12. illumina

    pomelo / 5469 posts

    @jetsa: Ooh, I've not heard of that one. Maybe I'll try it later. The only "prediction" I think might hold truth is the timing of BD, like how the Shettles method works. I think that's the main reason I'm thinking boy, so it'll be interesting to see if I'm right or not.

    @mrsmoreau: @marionberry: we are in the same predicament! We had a girl's name decided but are at an impasse for our boy's name -- DH has been frustratingly stubborn about the name he wants (exactly his grandfather's name vs the names sharing a first initial) and he hasn't quite gotten yet that this isn't something he can just wear me down on! I know we'll get there, but boy is it frustrating!

  15. MamaMagpie

    persimmon / 1436 posts

    @jetsa: my girlfriends and I have done the pencil test for years now, before any of us had had children. I have to say, so far it's been 3/3 on our pregnancies!

    @MamaMagpie: I'm glad we decided not to let her do it then!

    Had my 16 week appt today and all is looking good. Excited that I only gained 1 pound since my last appt 4 weeks ago.

    Anatomy scanning 4 weeks which is fun but we are team green so no gender.

    We are headed to San Francisco tomorrow for vacation if anyone has any good food recommendations.

    @MrsClownfish: yay! I would love to be going on a trip I had my apt today, was up 3, so 5.5 total, they told me the health canada rec for week 17 weeks is 7.5lbs so I'm glad to be under that slightly!

    DH took a recording of the heartbeat and its just so amazing - I keep listening to it over and over.' I can't believe how much higher the baby is now-just a bit below my belly button!

    I'm craving Mr Freeze and Apple Juice like crazy! Anyone else having any cravings?

  21. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

    @MapleMoose: Thank you!
    @char54: I'm only at about 4lbs up myself. I was wondering what the recommendation was at this point. I have noticed my uterus is now close to the top of my belly button, but baby is still a little bit further down for me. I actually worried when I saw the ultrasound that it didn't seem like he had much room in there. I hope my uterus isn't growing to slow, lol.

    @marionberry: @char54: Thankyou We were both so convinced it was a boy that when the sonographer said "congratulations you're having a little girl" it took me a few seconds to process it! We haven't bought a single thing for her yet!

    just made my first baby purchase. just some clothes for her, nothing major - but there is a lot of spring stuff on sale right now... i am stocking up on 6-9 month sizes.

    pomelo / 5469 posts

    @evenstar982: we did, though the detail wasn't particularly good... I guess because she is still super skinny at this point.

    @mrsmoreau: that's a good idea, I'll have to look into that and see what's in the shops at the moment. Are you glad you have someone to worry about names with now? I knew I was probably jinxing myself the other day!! My Dad said to me "can't you just name her a variation of your boy name choices?" lol!

    @illumina: yay for a girl!! I'm dying to find out, I don't know how the team greeners do it. I would LOVE to have that surprise on the day but the suspense would eat me alive! lol

    We bought our cot and glider this weekend so now we are done for all the big furniture! So excited! Feels really real now. We got it all secondhand, its in such good condition and we saved ourselves about $2000 than if we have bought those same brands/items new!! Happy!

    nectarine / 2522 posts

    Oh and I got a snoogle! So excited- havent tried it yet! Does anyone else have one?

  36. illumina

    pomelo / 5469 posts

    @Mrs squirreld: ahh a snoogle! Let us know how that works out... I've been looking at them too. I'm really glad we found out sooner rather than at the birth... I always said I would be happy with a healthy baby whatever it is and that's mostly true... but I was so convinced this baby is a boy that it is taking a little while to get used to the idea of having a little girl. If I'm honest, I shed a few tears last night... I had started to imagine what it would be like having a mini DH and was so excited for that and now I feel like I have to get to know my little girl again. Sounds crazy, I know, but I'm glad I'm doing that now rather than a few months later!

  37. mrsmoreau

    apricot / 251 posts

    @illumina: i had the same exact thing going on - in fact, I'm STILL struggling with the news a bit - another boy would have been so much easier! but, I suppose it's just another adventure for us!

    Is anyone else planning on doing Maternity or Newborn pictures? I started researching last week and am having major sticker shock, those things are expensive!

    @jetsa: I am hoping to convince a friend to take some maternity and newborn pictures for us, but it will depend how busy she is since its a hobby and she's a busy student nurse!
