Yay for all the nursery pictures, they all look gorgeous! my sister is crashing with us this week so ours is chaos right now as theres a camp-bed in the middle of it as well as my sewing table and still no crib or changing table! But I only have a week left at work (yowzers!) so I will be getting everything finished once I'm done in the office.

@marionberry: glad your shower went well, I'm excited for mine now and I still have a couple of weeks to wait... I must be lucky as a Brit that my friends are throwing me one though as I think @illumina is right, it's not commonplace here (yet).

Baby is getting violent with the wriggling this week... it's almost painful at times, I feel like I have a little monkey hanging from my ribcage by its toes!

I'm also getting a little tired of comments about my size... but bizarrely it's for the opposite reasons to everyone else here! People (mostly other mamas of more than one LO) keep commenting to me how *small* my bump is - and it's making me paranoid that I should be some kind of beached-whale by now; even though all measurements at the midwife are spot-on track... I keep worrying the baby isn't going to be 'big enough' - what a ridiculous notion given that I'm the one who'll have to birth it!!

I've gained probably 20lbs by now I think, but hard to tell because I'm not 100% sure what I weighed before Christmas, and my midwife doesn't weigh me she just measures the bump with a tape-measure!

Just updating the list with my guesses and next appointments as well while I'm here...

@marionberry: @jetsa: @MrsClownfish: @Meltini: @char54: @MrsStormy: OK I totally agree with you all on this!!! It really makes me mad, and I think I will probably snap the next time someone says something to me. Seriously!! Why do people think it is ok to comment on your weight/size when pregnant... I would NEVER consider saying that to someone. I have had a lot of issues mentally with this during my pregnancy ( mainly with my charming mother )It really upsets me and bothers me, I feel like I avoid social situations to avoid hearing these comments. Haven't we got enough on our plate with our bodies changing without having to deal with people rudeness..... I have only gained 3kg (7 pounds) which to me and my chart average is actually pretty low.. yet I've had these comments:
    Oh you are so big/huge.
Are you sure you aren't having twins?
You are getting so fat, are you still exercising?

I just don't understand some people.. I feel like saying you realize there is a baby growing inside me right? And then promptly punching them in the face. Ok Vent over.

But on the bright side, I got some cute stuff in the mail today. Two wet bags which prints I LOVE! And some stuff from Earth mama - booby tubes, nipple cream, bottom spray for my healing, and bottom cream for bub!

@jetsa: @MrsClownfish: @Meltini: @char54: @MrsStormy: @mrssquirreld: I don't think I mentioned this earlier, but the most recent person giving me crap about my weight is one of my "grandmas". I was at my shower Sunday next to the friend I mentioned just had her baby, and my grandma commented that how did I have 2 more months to go if I was already that big (comparing my belly to hers). Well that friend's baby was 6lbs, 6oz and 19" long, so really petite. Who's to say my son will be that little?! I was tempted to email her that today. The next person who talks about me being big is gonna get snapped at for sure!

@mrssquirreld: Oh! I need to buy a bunch of earth mama stuff! It's on my to-do list. I'm so jealous you already have yours. Cute prints too!

@marionberry: @jetsa: @MrsClownfish: @Meltini: @char54: @MrsStormy: I have you all beat - had my 32 week appointment yesterday and clocked in at a total gain of 50 pounds!!!! I gained a total of 65 with DS (who was only 7 lbs 7 oz at birth) so I suppose I am just built to hold extra weight. I suppose we should all keep in mind that we are all different and gain different amounts in different places.

Appointment went well. I am measuring a bit big so the doctor estimates I will go early like I did with DS (DS born at nearly 39 weeks)
As for epidural, my doctor would prefer me to have an Epi as opposed to IV narcotics for pain management (those are the only 2 medical pain relief options) since the epi does not affect baby in any way. I spoke to my mum about it last night and she advised me to go in and see how long I can last without the epi. She thinks DS could have been born much earlier had I not gotten the Epidural last time. So that is the plan so far.

Pretty sure I have landed on a name and I am going to stick to it.

That's the news for now. Updating the list with my guesses & next appointment!

@mrsmoreau: I have no doubt that by the end I will be bigger than they suggest, but it is what it is, I agree our bodies are all built totally different and carry babies differently! So glad you found your name, I'm sure it is beautiful!

  16. jetsa

So August now has 2 babies born and a 3rd to be induced Friday, ahh! Anyone think they'll go early?

I don't I'm guessing October, I don't even hit 37 weeks until Sept. 1; not that that matters. My husband's guessing I'll go at 39 weeks (9/14) because my ovulation and LMP don't match but I guess we'll see.

  17. Joanlindsay

    grape / 98 posts

@jetsa I was 3 days past due with DD so I just sort of assume I will be late again. My due date is 9/17 so I'm thinking 9/20 which would also be a Friday same as DD. I keep thinking it will all e similar to last time which probably means I will do the total opposite.

  18. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@jetsa: I have this feeling I'll go early, and well if baby marionberry is breech still I definitely will, with a scheduled c-section at 39 weeks most likely. I hope I won't be as early as those girls though...35 weeks would leave me ill prepared. My childbirth class said always to assume it will be 7 days later than your due date with your first, as that is the average I guess.

@mrsstormy: @mrsmoreau: I agree. All women are built differently and will carry their babies differently. One of the skinniest women I know at work said she gained 40-50lbs per kid. As long as we're ok with our bodies, that's all that matters.

Anyone getting slightly uncomfortable yet? I think it may have to do with his breech position but man, sometimes it's really hard just to sit up straight. Oh and on occasion I've noticed this muscle spasm/vibrating feeling right under my rib and last night DH and I googled it. All reports say totally normal, but the reason as noted by doctors goes from uterine muscle spasm to baby's foot twitching to baby peeing in utero. Apparently OB doctors aren't all that smart if they don't know what's really causing it.

  19. mrsmoreau

    apricot / 251 posts

@marionberry: I think that all twitches/vibrations/contractions/stretches etc. are up for interpretation, since really only that mama knows how it feels. it's not a symptom that can be seen as much as felt... so I agree, the OB's pretty much just make things up as they go along! haha.
I take movement of any kind as a good sign that beeb is still happily swimming around!

  20. MrsStormy

    clementine / 818 posts

@jetsa: I don't think I will be early, but I would be sad if I was (as long as I make it to full term). I've been telling myself I will be late so I wont be disappointed if/ when I'm not on time!

@MapleMoose: As long as they're not a sign of something bad they're all good with me!

Today we got our crib put together and all of our current furniture arranged in the room where we want it. There's so much to do still though. Right now my room looks too crappy to show you guys but if I can get some of the wall items completed I may post my first stage picture.

Goodness gracious, I'm out of town for work and feel like I've missed so much! Thank you guys for easing my mind about the BH, though, it made me feel better.

@mrssquirreld: good tip on the nursing bra fitting! And I so agree with bump looking different depending on the day, and even time of day for me! Also, I want to slap whoever has told you that you are big or fat or anything of the sort -- even if you had gained 80 pounds, no one should ever say that, not to mention you've only gained seven! That's not a lot at all!!

@marionberry: your shower looked so lovely! Love the mustaches and bowties And so exciting about being able to set up the nursery -- I'm so anxious to move in a coupe of weeks and do the same. And omg, we might be feeling baby peeing in utero?! Craziness. I'm sorry you're feeling so uncomfortable sometimes...I've had some rough moments, too

@jetsa: that was a good move sending your DH to get the crib and changing table and the room looks FANTASTIC! Love the woodland theme

@mrsclownfish: those prints are super cute and the room looks realllly good -- I'm in love with grey/white and stripes!

@mrsstormy: I'm so glad your shower went well, even if it was a little overwhelming

@illumina: hooray for passing the dreaded glucose test! Glad the weather is beautiful for you, too

@meltini: I HATE that people think it's ok to make comments like that! WTH?! I think 19lbs at 29weeks is on the low side of normal, right? I'm sure you look amazing!

@char54: hooray for getting more gear and feeling more prepared! And that is seriously so heartwarming that your DH put so much care into finding a going home outfit for a DS and likes to show it off

@evenstar982: "feeling like a I have a little monkey hanging from my ribcage" made me lol I hope it isn't too painful, though. Nice that your midwife doesn't weight you -- I'm sure you're perfectly on track!

@mrsmoreau: ooooooh so intrigued about what name you've picked!

@maplemoose: oh good idea on making the "to buy" list for postpartum -- I definitely feel a little overwhelmed by the stuff needed and like it's inevitable I'll forget something! Maybe you could share your list once you feel it's "done"?

Whew! Ok I feel caught up now!
I had gained 24 pounds at my 30 week appointment so I think I'm ok...people (strangers, mostly) have been making comments when I tell them I have two months left like "oh wow, I would've thought you were ready to pop!" "Eff you" is what I want to say to them...but I don't, I just smile and walk away haha.

My shower is on Saturday and I'm so excited! Can't wait to post a few pics

@MapleMoose: this looks good to me I'd love to hear our 2nd time mamas take on it. This is way more prepared than I am but amazon to the rescue, I can order all of it this weekend.

ETA: are you going to buy all the supplies under each category or just choose 1 from each?

  28. MapleMoose

    grapefruit / 4213 posts

@jetsa: Agreed, it will be good to hear from some moms who have already been through it.
I might buy a few under each category, like both disposable and washable breast pads. But I don't think I need all the pain/itch relief products, that might be overkill lol. I will probably try a few from the pain/itch relief and hemorrhoid relief categories and if they aren't working then try something else from the list. I already have an old shower curtain leftover from the move that I can place under my sheets above my mattress so I threw that on the list to remind me to actually do it before babe gets here. And yes, Amazon to the rescue! I will also be ordering from there.

@marionberry: @jetsa: I'm hoping to go early, but not holding my breath. I need to remember to ask my OB how long they will let me go before they induce. 2 weeks after my due date is our Thanksgiving here in Canada and I'm hoping to have LO before then. We always go to my aunt's camp in the woods with a bunch of family so I'm really hoping to bring LO up with us which obviously won't happen if he or she is only a couple of days old.

I had a dream last night that I couldn't feed my baby - which is probably indicative of my biggest fear right now. Since I had a breast reduction I don't know if I'll be able to breastfeed..the lactation consultant says we will just have to wait and see. I feel like I need to prepare for both breast and formula feeding...I've bought a breast pump, nursing bras, etc. and also a bunch of bottles, bottle warmer, etc.

In my dream I tried to pump but only got a little bit out...then realized I didn't buy any formula, and the baby wouldn't latch on to nurse. It was like day 5 and the poor baby still hadn't eaten anything.

I know it won't be that bad, but I hate being this unprepared and not knowing what will happen. Both breast and formula feeding seem complicated with their own intricacies and I feel like I don't know either process really well. Hmph. I feel so unprepared!!

  30. MamaMagpie

    persimmon / 1436 posts

@MapleMoose: awesome list! Totally using it! I agree with wanting to know what moms who've been through this already think about it

@char54: what an awful dream! You will be prepared, no matter which method ends up working best for you and beb -- don't be too hard on yourself if BF doesn't work out!

  31. MapleMoose

    grapefruit / 4213 posts

@char54: Exactly what @MamaMagpie: said. Just the fact that you are already worrying about it is actually a good thing -- it means there is no way you will be unprepared when baby arrives. You will try BF and if that doesn't work then you will already have your formula and supplies ready to feed your child.

  32. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@MapleMoose: Your list looks great and is very similar to mine! I might recommend you call the birth center where you're delivering and see what (if anything) they will be giving you to take home. I think they may give you the peri bottle and possibly some of the pads/tucks pads or sitz bath..although all hospitals are different. No need to buy them if you'll get them for free.

As a note to everyone else, I'm holding on to all of my receipts for these items because while I went out and bought many of them, if I end up with a c-section most of these will be for not. And a friend who had a baby a few weeks ago actually recommended only a tiny bag of heavy pads and more of the medium sized ones or pantyliners - but that's all dependent on your own personal amount of bleeding afterward, so who knows whether we should listen.

Does anyone want to share their hospital bag list? And what type of bags are you planning to take to the hospital? Duffle, suitcase, other? Will you pack a bag for your newborn, include their items with yours or use a diaper bag? I absolutely know I will overpack!

  33. marionberry

    pomelo / 5041 posts

@char54: I've heard of many doctors inducing after 1 week, but others want to wait until 2. I think it depends on your provider's preference. In the US, most hospitals have agreements to not induce unless after 39 weeks so that would be the earliest, but Idk what they typically do in Canada. And don't worry about breastfeeding. You'll do what you can and that's all that matters. Make sure to connect with a good lactation consultant because if it doesn't happen in the first few days it doesn't mean it never will. I'm sure they'd have great tips for you to try in the event of an issue if it's that important to you.

  34. Joanlindsay

    grape / 98 posts

    @maplemoose @jetsa
I had a pretty easy delivery on my first go but, I didn't need hardly anything. I had some witch hazel wipes and some nipple cream.
I took a couple pairs of mesh undies from the hospital and bought some boy short style that were pretty comfy. I bought the big pillow like maxis and ended up going out to get the thin extra absorbency.
I ended up with several sheet protectors (I think they are similar to puppy piddle pads) they were useful and I think I only used two so I still have some left.
I also recommend a nursing tank or two. When your milk comes in your boobs are GINORMOUS and hurt so a bra is not super realistic - plus they are nice to sleep in.
I think the hospital will provide you with a perineum bottle and some pads. They may even send you home with formula if your baby uses at the hospital. We didn't so I can't swear to that.
I also bought a hand pump that helped release a little of the extra milk when I was super engorged and I traveled with it later on. It broke so I will probably buy another even though I have the giant Medela pump.

    My Hospital bag

    Nursing tankx2
    Pajamas
2 outfits for me - ytd
    Flip flops
    Makeup
    Shampoo & conditioner
    Blow dryer
Makeup remover - for tape residue
    Lotion - unscented
    Contact stuff
    Glasses
    Toothbrush & paste

    Blanket
    Duck outfit
    3 sleepers

    iPad
doll for DD - gift from new baby
    Camera
    Camera charger
    Phone charger
    iPad charger
    Cash for food
    Car seat

So...we stayed 24 hours last time. I'm taking 2 outfits just in case and last time I was still a lot bigger than I expected.
Our hospital room was pretty tiny so I spent most of my time sitting in or in bed so the flip flops were easy to get on and off.
At our hospital my food is included and DH can order from the cafeteria but, we have to pay cash.
The hospital provided toiletries were crummy so I bought a travel size of my favorite nice shampoo.
I had A LOT of tape residue on my back and hand from my epidural and my IV. I'm hoping the makeup remover will help take it off.
Last time I didn't take makeup etc and I look kind of crummy in my first pictures with DD. Not that big of a deal but I'm going to make an effort this time.
I have some hysterically unsexy pjs that I bought about this time last baby. They are shorts and a tank and I can easily nurse in the top. Also I had some hot flashes after last baby so the light weight tank and shorts helped me stay cool.
I may take some snacks but, last time I packed SO much stuff and our room was so crowded I never unpacked 2/3 of it and I almost forgot my pump which was still in the box.
One other note - if you are delivering close to home or near a box store, friends and family will likely be happy to grab anything you need. The worst part about packing a giant suitcase was I had to unpack it when I got home when I was a sleep deprived, engorged, new mama.

For me staying around the $30 price point is important since I already have an electric pump. This could be why my last manual one doesn't work so well but, I feel like I got my money's worth.

@Joanlindsay: I've heard good things about both of those brands. Since I'm getting a medela PISA, I figure if I get the Medela Harmony it will work with my other parts.

@marionberry: I intend to get a manual and a double electric, I believe my insurance will cover both so I don't see why not.

@Joanlindsay: thank you for this list!
