@avivoca: That is spectacular. This all makes me really want to give it a go, either way.

@avivoca: Yes! The position thing is a MAJOR deal to me. I want to be able to move around freely. My plan was always to avoid an epidural as long as possible. My mom was forced to labor in bed with me but allowed to walk around with my brother and swears it made the biggest difference.

@mrsjd: My mom did 4(!) unmedicated births and she swears the recovery was easier as well. My recovery was not so great but I am not sure if that had anything to do with the epi or not. I had a 3rd degree tear and episiotomy so I could barely walk/sit for a week! BUT that is highly unlikely to happen to others. My son had the biggest head possible so I attribute it all to that. I'm kind of hoping recovery will be easier this time if I go without an epi and that I won't tear as badly this time either.

@MrsKoala: Hear you on the difference between a Feb and an Aug baby. There were things I hated about having to bundle up in the winter, and ice on the sidewalks scared me (I fell once) and I dreamed about flipflops. But, the mess I was after two hours at the park with LO1 this am (7-9am 80+ and total soup) makes me dream of cooler temps...

@mrsjd: I had LO1 standing up/squatting. It was super helpful for me to be able to move during labour and I needed all the help I could get from gravity. I had LO1 at home so epis and pain meds weren't an option unless we changed location. Because I knew that it never really crossed my mind to need something. My labour was almost 24 hours exactly from water breaking to baby, most of that time I had consistent but gentile contractions. Things didn't really heat up until the last 8 hours. The most painful/scary part for me was when I tore.

My midwives keep telling me things might move a lot faster this time. But who knows.

Babies head is down and causing all kinds of pain in my right hip, lower back and leg. Last night I actual had to get out of bed and spend a while on my hands and knees to give some space so he could shift.

@MrsKoala: I am kind of "never say never" when it comes to epidurals. I am planning on not having one, but I like to keep my options open. I will say, the first time it never felt like something my body wasn't supposed to be doing, like something I couldn't handle. It didn't feel good, but it felt like something natural. As long as I still feel that way this time, I am going to hold out. Also, the extra hospital bill for anesthesia is good motivation!

Hi everyone. Thanks all for the words of support on Monday. Things have been much better since then and reading your posts definitely helped. We are on vacation this week so I haven't really been able to keep up and only have a minute to post.

My labor with LO2 was unmedicated. I was in the early stages of labor for nearly a day and it was not bad at all. I had my 40 week appointment and the midwife sent me home to rest despite our distance from the hospital, rush hour traffic, and the fact I was 4 cm with a bulging sac. Contractions had gotten pretty bad at that point but were 10-12 min apart so we went home. My water broke shortly after I got home so we immediately left for the hospital... And got stuck in traffic so I wound up at a different hospital, fully dilated and ready to push. The nurse had me try pushing on my back but it was awful so I refused to do it until they let me get on my hands and knees. LO was delivered in one contraction, 2 or 3 pushes. He was just shy of 8 lbs and I had no tears or anything. Once the placenta was delivered I was able to get out of bed to pee. I couldn't pee much during labor because of his position and drank a ton so it was amazing to be up and walking around so soon after. I had an epidural with my first and planned it with my second so it was unexpected. I am open to either option this time and will just see how it goes

@maddyz: wow you delivered at home! Are you planning another home birth? I am in awe of anyone that can do that.

@skipra: Yes. For me I knew I would struggle in a hospital and NYC has such great resources (amazing, very skilled home birth midwives and easy to get to hospitals) that I felt confident. It was SO NICE to shower in my own shower after and sleep in my own bed.... I had LO1 standing in my kitchen!

@skipra: I'm so happy it's been a better week for you. And I hope you're enjoying your vacation!

@MrsKoala: I LOVED my epidural with LO and have no problem having a similar labor again this time. I was lucky in that my labor was relatively short-- I only realized I was in *real* labor at around 2:30am and when we arrived at the hospital at around 5:30am I was already 5cm. I was in a tremendous amount of pain when we arrived (probably in transition) and the epidural helped significantly. It allowed me to enjoy the process and I felt a bit more in control. I didn't have any issues from the epidural during either delivery (could feel the pressure and all sensations, just not the pain I had been in) or after LO was born and could easily move around within the hour. I am a bit concerned that labor will go much more quickly this time and don't have any pre-determined wishes for pain management, especially if Baby is coming quickly. I just know that I had been worried about how the epidural would make me feel during labor (would I feel anything?!) and after, and neither wound up being negative so I am comfortable trying it again if I need/want it. But we'll see what happens when the time comes!

I'm on Instagram too, although I must admit I don't use it/check it very often. But I'd love to get to know you ladies there! I'm meggo51

Has anyone experienced the dreaded pregnancy insomnia? I've been dealing with it for the past few weeks and tonight has been the absolute worst. I slept from about 10:30pm-12:00am and I've been awake ever since.

It started about 2 weeks ago and has been accompanied by some lovely nighttime anxiety which is making it really, really hard to get comfortable and actually sleep. And then of course I start thinking about how my day will be affected by no sleep and the panic sets in, so no hope of sleep in sight. I'm exhausted but I have a feeling that tonight is a lost cause for sleep

Sorry for the late night vent- just so frustrated.

@Periwinkle: Hello fellow late night buddy! I have dealt with this, but more in my 1st/second trimester. Right now I just get up a lot to pee and turn over (which requires a lot of effort) and my back is killing me because I lay in one position for so long. But I'm sure it's coming again. I get through the day on Coke, tea, and a prayer most days. I also don't keep my phone near the bed and there are no clocks in our room because I am sensitive to the electromagnetic (I guess that's what they are called) fields.

@Periwinkle: Oh yes. I need unisom to sleep these days. Otherwise, I'm up late or up in the middle of the night.

@Periwinkle: I had it so bad the first time around! I would get up and watch TV and have a snack in the middle of the night and then go back to bed. This time, I just stay in bed and toss from side to side until morning. I can fall asleep, just not stay asleep.

@skipra: Don't worry! My baby also has fluid in both kidneys. They have been dilated since 20 weeks. It's very common in boys and could resolve itself. I think my baby has kidney reflux which is very similar to acid reflux. Some urine goes back into the kidney. Here is a great website explaining what can happen.

@Periwinkle: I'm having such a hard time getting and staying asleep. Much worse than last time.

@avivoca: I swear it is such a production to turn over now. I stay on one side as long as I can but then my hip hurts and I feel cramps. There is like no comfortable position anymore.

@MrsKoala: @tlcbaby: I'm usually up in the middle of the night trying to will myself back to sleep.

  29. maddyz

    persimmon / 1270 posts

@Periwinkle: yes to also being up at night. I try really hard not to stress about it. I tell myself it's practice for breastfeeding. I usually have a snack, read a little and try to rest my eyes. Taking the pressure off myself to sleep and just let it take the time it does had actually helped.

In other news I definitely have the head cold dh has.... So pissed I got it, but also not very surprised. Nothing like getting hot, pregnant and snotty.

Not sleeping at night plus the heat maybe seriously knocked me out today! I could barely keep my eyes open to make lunch for me and A and luckily he took a good nap because I slept the entire time. I was really lightheaded, too. I'm hoping it's not more than that and I feel normal tomorrow.

@katsupgirl: My upper back kills every morning. What I wouldn't give to be able to sleep suspended in the air but be totally supported! I'm also so hot at night right now that I wake up sweating and it's so gross.

  33. katsupgirl

    nectarine / 2280 posts

@avivoca: the sweating is the other issue. I co sleep and my LO is practically sleeping on my head like a cat some nights. Not helpful.

Because I am so tired, I tried going to sleep early. HA. I couldn't fall asleep AND I spent some time awake in the middle of the night. I should just go to my office and start sewing.

@avivoca: Definitely feeling better today! I was considering calling them if I still didn't feel well today.

My back/hips/EVERYTHING hurts, especially in the morning. I've been doing this prenatal yoga video since my first pregnancy and I love it in the morning.

    Big vent

To tired to eat dinner.... Again. I keep falling asleep on the sofa after lo1 goes to bed with it eating. Now I am groggy, full of snot and starving. This cold is miserable. I am feeling super guilty about my lack of energy to parent lo1. This feels like my last chance to give him special attention and all I can do is sit on the floor.

  37. katsupgirl

    nectarine / 2280 posts

@maddyz: being sick while pregnant is a cruel joke the universe plays. It's the pits. I've been feeling guilty all summer. It's so tough when you are used to giving so much energy to your LO and then feel like you are slacking. I hope the cold doesn't linger and you get back to feeling good soon.

  38. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@maddyz: I hope you are feeling better today! I do feel like a crap mom sometimes, especially the days where I lay on the floor in front of the fan and she plays around me. We've been beating the heat at the splash pad every Sunday after church which is awesome for her because what did does not like to run around and play in water? It's awesome for me because I keep cool with my feet in the water and I pretty much just sit there and get tan.

  39. Periwinkle

    pear / 1879 posts

@avivoca: @MrsKoala: @tlcbaby: @katsupgirl: @maddyz: Thanks for your commiseration on the sleep issue. It's been a rough situation for me and unfortunately, I've gotten into a bad habit of working myself up so much and getting nervous about sleep because of the anxiety that I dread bedtime. Thank goodness for Benadryl (my doctor's recommendation).

A friend just recommended looking into taking a magnesium supplement to help with the sleeplessness and some of the underlying anxiety. I think I am going to give it a try (after chatting with my doctor) and see if it helps. It's so weird because anxiety is not one of my usual issues and I'm wondering what's bringing this on- trying not to think about the root cause so much and focus on feeling more like myself! Has anyone tried magnesium during pregnancy?

@maddyz: I'm so sorry you've been feeling so lousy! Did you get any relief today? To not be able to breathe on top of the pregnancy breathing issues is just so horrible and I hope your head cold is moving along very, very quickly for you.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend and is feeling as well as possible!

  40. MrsKoala

    cantaloupe / 6869 posts

@Periwinkle: I tried magnesium during pregnancy but for migraines (and it didn't work). I can't say it did anything for anxiety but I'm generally a bit anxious anyway and I wasn't exactly paying attention to its effect on that specifically. I'm sorry you're dealing with that and I hope it gets better!
